What is the difference between a Scholarship, Bursary and an

Award?

A Scholarship is a monetary recognition for outstanding academic achievement.

A Bursary is based upon demonstrated financial need while maintaining good

academic standing.

An Award may be a monetary or other form of recognition based on nomination or

demonstrable criteria such as volunteerism or leadership, and may include but is not

limited to academic achievement or financial need; secondary selection criteria may

be included for all the above.

When should I be applying for Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards?

Start looking for application deadlines within the first week of the semester. There

are scholarships, bursaries and awards available throughout the school year.

How to apply for Scholarships?

Apply for all individual scholarships for which you are eligible.

Answer all questions accurately and completely. If asked, be sure to provide

information on such items as offices held, special awards, special projects, sports

activities, volunteer services, and special interests of skills.

Letters of Recommendation may be requested by some scholarship organizations.

Here are a few helpful hints when requesting a letter:

• Ask someone who you’re confident would write a great recommendation.

• Provide all information to the person from whom you requested.

• Request permission before listing anyone as a reference.

• Provide plenty of time for the individual to write the recommendation.

• Be sure to thank the individual, a note or letter would be courteous.

HELPFUL HINTS

Study hard: Scholarships usually have a minimum average that you must attain to

be eligible.

Get involved: Many scholarship, bursary and award criteria include involvement in

your community or your school. We believe that your future success is based on

more than just grades.

… in your community Your volunteer commitment & your participation with various organizations such as

the Boys & Girls Club, or the Canadian Native Friendship Centre, would be

invaluable not only to scholarship applications, but it helps enhance healthy

communities. Ask around! Volunteer opportunities may be found at local

businesses, hospitals, senior facilities, community service clubs and athletic

facilities.

… at school Get involved in whatever your passion may be! Playing sports, participating in

student government, working on the student newspaper, or involved in theatre, bands

or book clubs.
