Introduction
04 Introduction
Make our forest grow!
As a signal towards the industry, our competitors, suppliers and customers, we are making a solid statement: Schoeller Allibert is supporting the United Nations environ-ment campaign to get people more involved (www.unep.org).
As part of the UN’s aim to plant 7 billion trees world-
wide, the Flemish Forests Association in Belgium has
set its own goal of 1 million trees. Its website, called
‘1 Miljoen Bomen voor Vlaanderen’, is part of the wider
United Nations Environment Program. Flemish citizens
register their tree-planting efforts and a live tally is kept
online. Schoeller Allibert supports this project and will
plant Schoeller Allibert Forests worldwide.
The first Schoeller Allibert forest is located in
Belgium. November 15th 2011, Schoeller Allibert bvba
organized a tree planting event and planted the first
104 trees. The event was organized together with
2 environmental organizations and a local school. In total
1.660 trees will be planted. With their forests, Schoeller
Allibert is supporting the United Nations goal to plant 14
billion trees worldwide (http://www.unep.org/billiontree-
campaign/). Will a plot of new trees make a difference?
“We believe it will.” says Ludo S.C. Gielen, Director of Sales,
Innovation and Marketing EMEA. Schoeller Allibert invites
you to support their initiative, or tell them your own ideas
on sustainability.
05 Introduction
Innovating your logistics for a better world
As a global market leader in the field of returnable plastic packaging solutions, Schoeller Allibert is committed to reducing our customers’ logistics costs and packag-ing. By using our knowledge and innovative skills, we are dedicated to improving the supply chain of our clients.
Our designs and returnable plastic packaging systems
are geared towards less change and no hassle during
transport, and a more efficient supply chain.
At Schoeller Allibert, we believe in making a difference
for you, your business and your personal environment.
That’s why we say we are ‘Innovating your logistics
for a better world’.
Schoeller Allibert is a green and innovative company. It is our goal to convince the world to start using returnable plastic packaging systems.
Use of returnable plastic packaging
Fortunately, the use of returnable plastic packaging is growing rapidly. Demand is triggered primarily by cost efficiency rea-sons, but environmental issues are also a driving force.
It is clear our world’s ecosystem cannot support the
amount of waste we are generating. Recycling is gen-
erally abandoned in favour of waste-destruction.
The only solution is to develop a new, sustainable
packaging system that replaces the need for tradi-
tional packaging. Schoeller Allibert wants to be in
charge of this revolutionary development.
We offer all necessary recycling services to our
clients. We can take care of collecting, recycling and
re-using packaging units that are up for renewal. For
the markets we serve, this ensures a truly sustainable
use of natural resources.

01 Logistics cost-saving analysisSchoeller Allibert believes in returnable plastic packa-
ging because it is strong, safe and cost-efficient.
Using returnable plastic packaging starts with making
a cost-saving analysis, because a thorough logistics
analysis is the first step toward gaining efficiency.
We show you results!
02 Design and engineeringUser-friendliness and sustainability are the driv-
ing forces behind designing and engineering your
packaging system. Good design also reduces costs
by improving durability.
03 Production and quality controlOur production process is state of the art and fully
automated, allowing us to produce over 1,000 different
products. Since our crates and boxes are handled by
millions of people, they need to be safe. All our products
are tested extensively for quality, durability and safety
according to strict ISO standards.
04 Marketing propositions and campaignsFor clients in the retail and beverage industries, we
have developed many creative packaging concepts.
Our 3D printing and in-mould labelling techniques
offer new opportunities for unique brand identities
in the consumer markets. When added value at the
Point of Sale is called for, we gladly develop distinctive
marketing campaigns, customized for your products
and target groups. Let us surprise you! We can offer
the ideal high-quality plastic solution for your home,
such as pet shelters and household items such as
tubs, trays, containers, pet bottles and many more.
05 Rental and pooling servicesIf you do not require customized packaging, renting
or pooling may be cost-efficient solutions. Sharing
a logistics system with other companies has several
advantages. For example, there is no need to tie up
your capital in packaging. At Schoeller Allibert, we offer
a number of different renting or pooling options. Our
costs-saving analysis will help you choose between
buying, renting or pooling.
06 Logistics servicesGood packaging is one thing, but having it where and
when you need is another. IT solutions, such as our
revolutionary tracing software, puts you in control of
your logistics flow. Our customized, web-based tools
enable you to plan and manage your logistics opera-
tions. Our Tracking Systems will give you a continuously
updated overview of where your products are. Many of
our pooling customers will provide you with a solution.
07 Recycling servicesRecyclability is an important feature of returnable plas-
tic packaging systems. Schoeller Allibert offers all the
recycling services necessary. First of all, we collect used
containers and crates. After cleaning, grinding, washing
and drying, they are ready to be remoulded and re-used.
No pollution, no waste. We take care of all the necessary
steps, creating a sustainable packaging cycle.
Using fewer scarce commodities is an important
development for the packaging industry and an important
contribution to saving our environment. By focusing on re-
cycling, companies can strongly reduce their purchase of
commodities and supplies. We feel a responsibility towards
supporting and endorsing this positive development.
We are confident that recyclability will set the standard.

10 The agriculture market
11 The agriculture market
Agriculture
Agriculture is a high-volume, margin- sensitive business. It requires the ability to ship large volumes at competitive prices. Our main markets are fruit production, vegetable production, horticulture and food processing. For these markets we offer a large range of stackable crates, nestable crates, foldable trays and containers.
Schoeller Allibert’ adaptability is a key advantage here,
since harvests can differ substantially from the previ-
ous year, and orders for a particular season may change.
We ensure that our products meet food contact
legislation requirements and we actively promote and
trend set the usage of best practices in this market.
Foldable Small Containers provide the most eco-
nomical solution for logisticians, fruit wholesalers or
shippers, providing up to 70% savings in space when
folded. Our Big Box Maximus is taking the lead in fruit
harvesting, thanks to its small weight, enormous
volume, protection capabilities and the fact that it
has a static load capacity up to 4 tons. Our popular
bag-in-box IBC Combo is our most hygienic product
on the market. With a high folding-robustness ratio
and a capacity of up to 1,000 litres, the Combo is
perfect for storing and transporting liquid processed
food products like marmalades, juices, fruit concen-
trates and creams, as well as chemicals and other
products, safely and hygienically.
Our logistics solutions for fruits and vegetables speed up processes and improve hygiene and ergonomics
Case study: Aroma
Aroma Bursa Fruit Juices and Food Industry is one of
the biggest fruit juice and fruit concentrate produc-
ers in Turkey. Aroma processes over 225,000 tons of
fruit per year. Fruits and vegetables processed on
semi-finished product lines include apples, peaches,
apricots, strawberries and tomatoes. To handle this
massive amount of fruit, each year wooden trans-
port boxes are assembled at the facility. The boxes
were easily damaged or contaminated. As all boxes
are stored outside, they were affected by rain and
changes in temperature.
Aroma asked Schoeller Allibert to solve this stor-
age problem. Assembling containers was clearly
a waste of time and a new system should lower
the cost of transport and labour. New containers
also had to be safe, hygienic and easy to handle.
Schoeller Allibert proposed using the Combo Life 285
Standard IBC container. This IBC Bag-in-Box container
is very successful in the food and agriculture industry
for its hygienic properties.
When the containers are not in use they are folded,
taking up little space. The Combo Life Standard con-
tainers are easily carried by forklifts, easy to clean
and environmentally friendly. The Combo 285 Stand-
ard IBC is perfectly suited for outside storage and
requires very little maintenance. Aroma replaced all
wooden crates with the Combo Life 285 Standard
IBC. All required transport and labour cost savings
were realised.

14 The automotive market
Automotive industry
The automotive industry is characterized by globalisation and consolidation across all segments of the industry and OEM manufacturers. The responsibility for de-livering vehicles on time depends largely on the component supply chain. Plastic storage boxes, such as FLC (Foldable Large Containers), KLT (Container for small com-ponents), pallets and lids, play an important role in the automotive industry.
The automotive industry takes its environmental re-
sponsibilities very seriously. It has pioneered the use
of returnable transit packaging more than any other
industry. We offer the broadest possible range of
products for the automotive sector: from the smallest
bin to the biggest foldable container for the transport
and handling of headlamps, panels or car interiors.
We have developed a range of the largest and strong-
est plastic foldable containers in the world, up to
2.4 meter high. Using a new innovative welding technol-
ogy, we offer Magnum Optimum containers with smooth
sides for easier cleaning, external storage and lower
weight. Our Boxerpac is a versatile system, providing
outstanding volume for bulk storage and distribution.
The Maxipac range improves bulk distribution and
the display of products instore. The TYTAN range has
been developed to meet heavy-duty manufacturing
transport needs.
Our returnable packaging solutions for the automotive industry are environmentally friendly and work well in the whole supply chain
15 The automotive market
Case study: Magna Steyr - BMW group
The BMW Group signed an agreement with car pro-
ducer Magna Steyr covering the development and
production of the new BMW X3. Never before had
an automobile manufacturer assigned such a large-
scale project to a single partner in the automotive
supply industry.
Magna Steyr normally uses steel boxes as their
standard packaging. The challenge was to find an
effective solution for handling materials from vari-
ous suppliers from all over Europe to Magna Steyr’s
facilities in Graz, Austria. Today, most components
produced by the supplier are sequenced into the as-
sembly line for a specific vehicle.
Up to 60% of the finished vehicle’s value comes
from the component suppliers. The responsibility
for delivering vehicles on time, lies to a large degree
with the component supply chain since parts are
not stored at the vehicle production plant. In this
way, storage boxes play a large part in the automo-
tive industry. Magna Steyr opted for partly replacing
the steel boxes by foldable plastic containers and
selected the Magnum Foldable Large Containers of
Schoeller Allibert. The result was a considerable re-
duction of transport costs for handling empty con-
tainers. In addition, using plastic instead of steel
boxes substantially reduced quality claims, the
parts being delivered without damage.

18 The beverage market
Beverage Industry
In the competitive and consolidating beer and soft-drinks market, building strong brands is the key to success. Communicat-ing your brand on point of sales is crucial to fulfil your efforts in marketing. Schoeller Allibert, the market leader in beverage returnable systems, has the right solution.
We offer added value to your product in logistics, point
of sales promotion and for your customer. Our tech-
nological solutions create more design options for
beverage crates, resulting in more marketing oppor-
tunities: from high quality decoration and gadgets to
accelerated promotions.
By creating visually appealing crates for point-of-sales
identity, and by thinking about consumer ergonomics
in our designs, we give our customers an edge in
positioning their brands. We are highly conscious of
the significance of innovation, and successful new
product features quickly become the standard. Near-
ly all important developments in the field of beverage
crates originated in our company.
In addition, Schoeller Allibert has developed a range
of products especially for the beverage industry: from
the Bottle Carrier 4th generation beer crate,
to the Key Keg.
It is all about building strong brands and communicating on point-of-sale
Case study: Heineken
The Heineken brand, world’s most valuable
international premium beer brand is available in
almost every country around the globe. However,
in Germany, a truly beer-loving country, national
legislation protects local brands, leaving brewers
such as Heineken waiting at the border.
In 2009, the market was finally opened. This meant
that Heineken needed a market introduction as
soon as possible, although it had no packaging,
no transport and no storage in place. Heineken
decided on having all new crates in-store within
three months, containing their standard 33cl bottle.
Schoeller Allibert provided the Exclusive 2433
crate, an existing product with in-mould label-
ling (IML) for branding power and also suitable for
six-packs. This solution ensured a quick time to
market and substantial savings in mould develop-
ment. The crate fitted the bottling line at Heineken
‘s Hertogenbosch and was already a standard in the
German market.
The launch was successful: brand awareness
increased rapidly and in 2010 Heineken doubled its
2009 market share.

22 The chemical and pharmaceutical industry
Chemical and Pharmaceutical industry
In response to strict environmental and transport regulations, many chemical companies are improving the quality of their packaging and moving from metal to plastic containers.
Schoeller Allibert helps these companies meet their
challenges with UN-approved ROPAC open-top con-
tainers for dangerous solids and liquids transport.
The ROPAC pails offer safe packaging for high-level
added-value products as well. The plastic material
(HDPE, high-density polyethylene) is easier to recycle,
safe, shock-proof and does not dent or get marked
in transit.
The Combo Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) with
the bag-in-box concept is another innovative plastic
packaging solution, for non-hazardous goods, with
many benefits for clients in the chemical industry.
With a capacity of up to 1,000 litres, the Combo is per-
fect for storing and transporting adhesives, coatings
and detergents. The Combo offers customers the best
ratio between useful volume and protection of fluids.

Our postal boxes for mail are customized to the needs of more than a dozen countries in europe and Asia
Postal services
Electronic sorting equipment places high demands on the containers used in such systems. We have researched and devel-oped the transition from traditional mail systems to intelligent, automated sorting systems. Our plastic boxes for mail are customized to the needs of more than a dozen countries in Europe and Asia, including the UK, France and Hong Kong.
The need to securely trace documents, parcels and
products throughout the postal process is becoming
ever more pressing. Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) technology uses radio waves to automati-
cally identify objects. Coupled with existing barcode
technologies, RFID has the power to transform the
operations of postal, logistics and express-courier
services worldwide.
With our knowledge of labelling, adhesives, barcode
design and printing, we have a long-standing reputa-
tion as leaders in providing secure logistics solutions.
In embracing the opportunities presented by RFID
technology, we are even more capable of devising
innovative, individual solutions that will bring tangible
benefits to your business.
Case study: Posten Norge
In 2009, Norwegian Post (Posten Norge) built a new
76,000 m² distribution centre in Oslo. Part of all let-
ters and packages were transported from local post
offices to the distribution centre in metal roller cages.
These cages proved to be inefficient in the new post
handling system.
Posten Norge asked Schoeller Allibert to suggest a
cost-effective solution to replace all roller cages. A
new system also had to be environmentally friendly.
It had to be easier to handle, both manually and in
automated systems, and easier to repair.
Schoeller Allibert offered a solution with the Magnum
Black Line foldable pallet containers. With these
containers, it is easy to optimize storage space and
handling. The Magnum Black Line pallet containers are
made of recycled material and meet all environmental
requirements. Posten Norge allready had a positive
experience with our Magnum Classic containers,
handling part of their postal traffic.
The foldable Magnum Black Line containers have a high
reduction ratio to optimise return transport and storage.
They maximise space utilisation in lorries or trucks in
transport. The introduction of the Magnum Black Line
proved to be a financial success. Additionally, easy
manual handling resulted in less stress for employees
and less sick leave.

30 Fluid handling
Our combo packaging system delivers hygienic transport and storage of liquids and fluid products against lower trip costs
Fluid handling
The main challenge in fluid handling is to reduce the costs while improving the per-formance of the distribution system. Some of our customers operating in this sector include well-known companies like Heinz, Unilever, Campbell’s and Tropicana. We have developed a range of large containers suitable
for transporting and storing liquids. Our ComboLife
series contains a sterile liner bag inside the con-
tainer so that they can be filled without allowing air
to mix with the product. This protects them against
contamination and oxidation.
Compared to traditional storage box alternatives, this
packaging system dramatically reduces costs, and our
IBC products are steadily replacing steadily replacing
disposable IBCs as well as rigid returnable systems.
Our ComboLife series are economical, easy to use,
robust and environment friendly, they simplify han-
dling throughout the logistics chain and provide safe
and hygienic storage and transportation of liquids.
31 Fluid handling
Case study: Urbanek
Urbanek is one of the largest fruit and vegetable
processors in Poland. Urbanek produces pick-
led vegetables such as cucumber and cabbage.
The company sells to wholesalers and retailers
and is a big exporter to Germany and Russia.
Urbanek needed a new strong, high-volume
container for pickled cucumbers, easy to handle
and transport. The company had recently built
some new, seven-meter high cold stores that
required efficient use and was faced with an
outdated packaging system. Tanks could not be
moved, drums were too small and took up lots of
space. Moreover, the tanks and drums were hard
to clean and easy to damage.
Schoeller Allibert proposed a customized solution
for Urbanek: a modified IBC Combo CL285 bag-in-
box container. A special liner accommodates a safe
pickling process, allowing easy access for adding
ingredients at any time during the production pro-
cess. Logistically, the solution is a breakthrough as
well: the cold stores can now store up to 450 tonnes
of cucumber versus 150 tonnes in the old situation.

34 Food processing
35 Food processing
Food processing
New handling technologies in food processing have made food transport safer, quicker and more efficient than ever before, while guaranteeing that the food will arrive at the supermarkets fresh and ready to buy.
From fresh to deep-frozen food, from raw produced
to cooked food, a plastic container of some sort will
be required to store or transport food from the ware-
house to end users.
The requirements for transit packaging in food pro-
cessing are demanding: it must offer maximum protec-
tion and remain cost-effective, be customer-friendly
and comply with safety regulations, and display price
or product information. It must be environmentally
friendly and easy to clean and maintain.
Our plastic containers meet all these criteria, made
of food-contact approved polypropylene that is ultra-
hygienic and recyclable. They can even be temperature
controlled, preventing goods from perishing.
Case study: Yoplait
Cilam is a Yoplait franchise company, based in the
French overseas department La Reunion. On the Cilam
automatic line, the objective is to pack yogurts auto-
matically by filling a crate with 4 packs of 12 yogurts
and then stacking 70 crates on a pallet. Following the
automation company recommendations, Cilam bought
300,000 plastic stack nest crates from a competitor.
The design of the crates turned out to be inappropri-
ate. The robot faced difficulties in properly stacking
the crates on the pallet. Cilam asked both parties,
automation company and packaging supplier, to solve
the problem, but a solution was not found. At the end
of 2008, Cilam contacted Schoeller Allibert and asked
for a solution. First, standard Schoeller Allibert crates
were tested, but none were accepted. Schoeller Al-
libert then agreed to start the development of a new
crate with two main requirements: automatic handling
and compatibility with existing crates.
In November 2009, the mould was successfully tried.
Cilam approved the new crate in the first trial. Pro-
duction is now running and 300,000 crates are being
produced to replace all defective ones.
As a result, Cilam is very confident with Schoeller
Allibert. New projects are discussed, such as new
pallets and higher crates to be used for Yop bottles.
Using our logistics solutions means food is transported safer, quicker and more efficient than ever before

38 Pooling services
Pooling services
Schoeller Allibert partners with sev-eral leading pool organisations, includ-ing IFCO, Euro Pool System, Container Centralen, Contraload, Smart Carriers Services, Chep and IGPS, who all offer the unique pooling solutions we have developed and produced for our customers.
We supply Euro Pool Systems with foldable small
containers that are the same size as rigid contain-
ers and are equally strong, stackable and easy to
handle. It is no longer necessary to sort the crates at
the distribution centres before returning them. This
results in 20% fewer crates in the chain and significant
savings on selection costs.
For Container Centralen, all crates are designed
for machine handling and automatic transport on
conveyor belts, and have ultimate hygienic prop-
erties. Our patented liftlock system ensures very
convenience feeling when operating manually in the
shop. The volume of these containers is reduced up
to 85% when collapsed, which significantly reduces
the cost of transporting empty containers.
For global pooling organization IFCO Green Box, which
currently uses almost 200 million crates in Europe,
South Africa, Japan and Latin America, we developed
new production techniques to grow their market share.
The improved folding ratio is a huge improvement in
cost efficiency for all parties in the supply chain from
producer to retailer.
Schoeller Allibert is a strategic partner servicing leading pool organizations
39 Pooling services
Case study: Smart Carriers Services
One of our pooling customers, Smart Carriers Services
in The Netherlands, services a leading European white
goods manufacturer, the Electrolux Group. For the
production of its front-loading washing machines,
the manufacturer uses components from all over
Europe. Wooden pallets were used for shipping, but
the annual disposal costs and environmental effects
asked for another solution.
The brief was to find a re-usable plastic pallet with
the specific dimensions of 1,200 x 1,000 x 1,200 mm
that would protect all types of parts, including bulky
washing machine spares, during transport. The manu-
facturer required a tracking device to monitor trans-
port, delivery and customer stock levels.
Schoeller Allibert proposed to Smart Carriers Services a
Magnum large, foldable container pallet with cover and
a tailor-made tracking device. This 1,200 x 1,000 x 1,200
mm Magnum soon proved to be a financial success.
The production costs were reduced considerably.
Logistical results showed a load increase of 25% per
truck. Our system enabled the white goods manu-
facturer to save storage space: folded and stacked,
the Magnum’s volume is 30% of its original size. The
sturdiness and stackable qualities of the pallet box
have resulted in decreased product breakages.

42 Retailing
Our returnable packaging solutions improve shopping experience and on-shelf availability
Retailing
Retail distribution is all about 'the last 50 meters of the journey' to the retail shelf. The supply chain of the retail market is probably the most versatile where big volumes are applied. Schoeller Allibert's retail-ready plastic containers are suitable for both mechanic and manual handling. They help to eliminate waste and contribute to a better CO2 footprint. Schoeller Allibert’s retail-ready containers are tamper proof during transport, but when opened they are very accessible and display ready.
We have a range of standard plastic pallets, trays and
boxes and have developed customised handling
solutions. All to serve various markets such as mail
processing, catering, complete systems for the gar-
ment industry, pharmaceutical supplies and many
other sectors.
Schoeller Allibert offers storage containers and plas-
tic pallets that provide retailers with returnable
solutions. These improve the consumer's shopping
experience, making it easier to choose products and
increasing on-shelf availability. At the same time, our
products are designed to enhance your brand, increase
logistical efficiency and to enable consumers to get
their goods home easily.
43 Retailing
Case study: Decathlon, Oxylane Group
Operating over 200 stores, Decathlon is the
European market-leader in sportswear and sports
equipment. The Decathlon Stores are supplied with
25,000 different items are distributed in cardboard
packaging, in Magnum 2330 foldable large containers
and in Prelog CMB foldable small containers.
The Magnum containers were functioning well, but
the weight of around 63 kg proved to be a problem
for handling in the stores. Decathlon asked Schoeller
Allibert to develop a solution with lighter containers
and a big, 200 kg, loading capacity.
Schoeller Allibert's R&D department developed the
new Magnum Helium container meeting the
requirements. The lowest possible weight is 27 kg.
The Magnum Helium makes sure its contents reach
the Decathlon shops in good shape. Its space saving
fold-down walls and large door-openings make it very
suitable for retail environments.
The Magnum Helium was made compatible to the
Prelog CMB folding attached lid containers, which
offers Decathlon a mix of versatility, security and
volume maximization for their store deliveries. These
two innovative products together form a market
leading store distribution solution for the retail
sector. Decathlon purchased 20,000 Magnum
Helium containers and issued a testing order for
Decathlon China.

46 Recycling and waste management
Recycling and waste management
Thanks to new critical legislation and grow-ing public concern for the environment, the recycling and waste management market is expanding rapidly.
Schoeller Allibert has the product range to assist in
operational cost savings and increased productivity
in resource recovery. Our Big Boxes and Foldable
Large Containers (FLCs) are benchmarks in the waste
management industry. They are used for recycling
plastic packaging, paper, cardboard, rubber, textiles,
organic waste, food and wood.
The battery recycling market is another example
of responsible scrapping. Because batteries are
extremely heavy, Schoeller Allibert developed a Big
Box with reinforced base runners, protecting the
stability of the box and facilitating swift emptying.
This smooth-walled rigid pallet container is now
widely used in the recycling industry for collecting and
transporting waste products. The Big Box is ideal for
recycling heavy-duty batteries and is often referred
to as ‘the battery box’.
Schoeller Allibert produces several kinds of con-

47 Recycling and waste management
Case study: Veolia Environmental Services
With over 97,000 employees in forty coun-
tries, Veolia Environmental Services is the
global benchmark for waste management
and resource recovery. Veolia's German sub-
sidiary, BioCycling, is specialized in recycling
food and organic waste and producing Biogas
and Biodiesel.
BioCycling needed a hygienic solution for col-
lecting used PET bottles from supermarkets
and other retailers. Until then, recovered PET
bottles had been collected in plastic bags.
This system proved difficult to automate.
Handling was tiresome, while spilling and
leakage resulted in unhygienic working
conditions. Another requirement for the new
system was that it should fit the Tomra re-
verse vending system used by retailers.
This vending system provides a solution for
handling the return of deposit beverage con-
tainers at retail stores such as supermarkets,
convenience stores and gas stations.
Schoeller Allibert suggested a customized
pallet box. We modified and re-welded our Big
Box to gain height, so that two stacks of PET
bottles would fit the crate. The customized Big
Box is self-loading, features wheels for easy
handling, is leakage-proof and easily cleaned.
BioCycling is the first company in Germany to
offer this service to its customers.
