As we break in the new year, let’s take a look at some of the big stories to watch in Queens in 2019.
The city’s location of homeless shelters around the borough continues to be a sore spot for Queens residents, with particular flashpoints in College Point and Glendale.
The Karina Vetrano murder case will be retried beginning Jan. 22 after Queens Supreme Court Justice Michael Aloise stunned courtwatchers by declaring a hung jury after just 13 hours of deliberation in November. Chanel Lewis, a 22-year-old Brooklyn man, stands accused of killing the Howard Beach jogger during a brutal assault in Spring Creek Park in August 2016, not far from Vetrano’s Howard Beach home. If convicted, Lewis faces life in prison.
Straphangers will be facing a transit nightmare in April when the 15-month shutdown of L train service begins for repairs to the Hurricane Sandy-damaged Canarsie Tunnel. Several subway lines in western Queens will feel the brunt, especially the beleaguered No. 7 subway line.
Queens Borough President Melinda Katz will spend much of the year gearing up for Census 2020 which she says is crucial
to the future of the borough. Her former deputy borough president, Melva Miller, stepped down earlier this month to become the new executive vice president of the Association for a Better New York, a nonprofit civic organization that is working to make sure that as many New Yorkers as possible are counted during the census.
Of course, Amazon’s planned HQ2 campus in Long Island City will be a top story in the year to come and many years after that. The City Council held the first of three oversight hearings into the deal that was struck by the state and city which provides nearly $3 billion in tax cuts and subsidies in return for the promise of 25,000 jobs over the next ten years with the potential to expand to 40,000 jobs over the next 15 years.
Jan. 1 marked the start of new terms in government for statewide offices. Incoming Attorney General Letitia James, the first African-American woman to hold statewide office is among the several newly elected officials to take office.
In Queens, there are many new Assembly members and state Senators assuming office, including State Sens. John Liu of the 11th District (northeast Queens), Jessica Ramos of the 13th District (Corona, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside), along with state Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz

of the 39th District (Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights), who is the first DREAMer to hold public office in New York state.
Beyond politics, there are plenty of other notable dates ahead for Queens.
February: Thousands of Asian residents across Queens will celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Pig — the 12th in the 12-year zodiac cycle — at the Lunar New Year Parade in Flusing.
March: Queens plays host to three spectacular St. Patrick’s Day Parades in March.
April: Baseball fans across Queens are already gearing up for the start of the 2019 season, but they’ll have to wait a few more weeks
before seeing the Mets open their season at Citi Field.
May: Be sure to take the family to one of the many Memorial Day parades held across the borough.
June: The colors of the rainbow will fly through Jackson Heights on June 2, during the Queens Pride Parade and Festival.
July: Astoria and Bayside play hosts to fireworks shows in the days leading up to Independence Day, July 4.
August: Aug. 3-4 marks the return of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
September: Queens will again pause on Sept. 11 to mark the anniversary of the terrorist
attacks that occurred 18 years ago at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on board United Airlines Flight 93.
October: The streets of Queens will host numerous Halloween parades in the days leading up to All Hallows Eve.
November: Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, and there are two key races in Queens to watch all year long — one for Queens district attorney and one for public advocate.
December: Queens will once again celebrate the holiday season with tree and menorah lightings planned throughout the borough.
From our entire staff, have a happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful new year!

City Councilman Daniel Dromm joined community leaders in Jackson Heights Tuesday to demand justice for the survivor of an anti-gay hate crime that occurred in early November.
During the Jan. 22 press conference, held at the intersection of 78th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, Dromm called on the NYPD to charge the owner of Village Moon with a hate crime after he allegedly muttered anti-gay hate speech to two patrons in November 2018.
“The NYPD should act in the best interest of the survivors — not further victimize them,” said Dromm, who added that he was sad that in 2019, people still believe they can use hateful terms like “f—t” and get away with it.
“We call upon the police to right this wrong,” he added.
On Nov. 3, Valarezo and his husband made a small purchase using a credit card at Village Moon, located at 78-01 Roosevelt Ave. in Jackson Heights. After the purchase, store employee Monammed Hoque insisted on photocopying Valarezo’s drivers license.
When Valerezo and his husband objected, Hoque launched into an anti-gay tirade calling them “f—ts” among other slurs, according to Dromm’s office.
After Valarezo and his husband exited the shop, Dromm said, Hoque allegedly assaulted Valarazo. While the police were shown video evidence indicating that this assault was a hate crime, they

chose to ignore it, according to Dromm’s office. Instead, the NYPD charged one of the victims with a felony, which was later reduced to a class A misdemeanor.
Hoque, the alleged perpetrator of the hate crime, was given a mere desk appearance ticket by the NYPD.
In Jackson Heights, hone to one of the largest LGBTQ communities in New York, such hate and violence should never be tolerated — least of all by the NYPD, according to Dromm’s office.
“We stand behind each other in Queens,” said Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, who joined City Councilman Rory Lancman, Melissa Mark-Viverito, and
other elected officials in showing their concern and support for the couple.
“Society has come a long way in recent decades towards reducing hatred and
discrimination against gay people,” said Tina Arniotis, co-chair of Queens Pride. “However, it will be a while — if ever — before anti-gay sentiment disappears completely and this only provides more fuel for us leaders and advocates to educate and fight for LGBTQ rights.”

The weather couldn’t stop scores of College Point residents from making the long trip to Lower Manhattan to protest a proposed homeless shelter in the community.
The protesters gathered on the steps of City Hall on Jan. 13 demanding that the city Department of Homeless Services come up with another way to help homeless residents in Queens.
The agency has proposed opening a shelter for up to 200 men at a site located at 127-03 20th Ave.
For months, College Point residents, including Jennifer Shannon, have said the plan simply doesn’t work for the community.
At Sunday’s protest, Shannon repeated her concerns that the community offers little public transportation and medical services — both of which are necessary to accommodate the homeless population that the shelter would serve.
“[College Point] really is on the most northern tip of Queens, and there really is nothing there. To get to any service, it’s 45 minutes,” Shannon said, referring to the three-to-five unreliable bus routes available.”
One concern Shannon
City Hall protest for College Pt. shelter planAN AMAZIN’ BLOOD DRIVE
voiced was that the residents at the facility will not be allowed to stay in the building during the day and that medical assistance is sparse.
City Department of Homeless Services spokesman Isaac McGinn denied the claim, explaining that this is a misconception that arose from the fact that residents are sent into common areas of the facility
to engage in job development and other programs while sleeping quarters are cleaned by staff.
Shannon admitted that DHS had not said this is its policy, but that it had been in contact with other communities who claimed homeless residents were turned out during the day.
“If we get sick in College
Point, we have to go to Bayside, we have to go to Whitestone — we’ve got no services,” Shannon said. “No train, no precinct, no hospital. So how are they helping these men?”
But like many other homeless shelter facilities established by the city, McGinn confirmed that the College Point shelter will have medical services provided on-site as well
as mental health assistance.“Our only thing is this is
just a really horrible location,” Shannon Said. “This is not a NIMBY thing, it’s just not safe. It’s just not safe to put 200 men transitioning – many of them, probably most of them from prison – in the middle of a community surrounded by our schools.”
Michael Deng, who also helps organize the opposition to the shelter, echoed Shannon in the claim that those opposing the College Point shelter had been villainized by those in favor, which they viewed as an unfair assessment.
“We’re talking about a very small number of people who go through homelessness versus a community of 80,000 people, 28,000 households, more than 5,000 school kids,” Deng said. “It couldn’t be a worst site. Five schools in the middle of the commercial center of College Point. We’re not against homeless, we have our own homeless we are taking care of.”
There are currently an estimated 63,000 to 70,000 homeless individuals in the city, a situation which has been treated as a crisis by Mayor Bill de Blasio. The College Point location is slated to be another addition in his Turning of the Tide on Homelessness initiative.

Blondell Commons rezoning meetingBY ALEX MITCHELL
Th developers of a major, large scale, mixed-use proj-ect anticipated to arrive at Westchester Square’s 1340 Blondell Avenue, revealed ad-ditional details during a pub-lic hearing.
Called Blondell Commons, the proposed 9-story devel-opment with 228 units and ground fl oor retail space, will contain 211,500 total square feet of fl oor area and a front-age of 215 feet.
Representatives from Blondell Equities, LLC pre-sented the building’s unit breakdown and amenities
during a Uniform Land Use Review Process hearing at the Bronx County Building on Thursday, December 28.
The residential units, en-compassing 189,000 square of the building’s total size, will be offered as 51 studio units at an average 450 square feet apiece, 80 one-bedroom units at an average 620 square feet per unit, 57 two-bedroom units, averaging 820 square feet, and 40 three-bedroom units, with just over 1,200 av-erage square feet per apart-ment.
In accordance with the city’s Mandatory Inclusion-
ary Housing guidelines, 68 of the units will be set aside for tenants earning 80% of the area’s median income (AMI) and the developers plan to set aside a number of units for homeless veterans.
The building will also in-clude a 225 spot parking ga-rage, of which 95 will be open for public use at what develop-ers called ‘a competitive fee,’ along with 114 spaces for bicy-cle parking.
The project’s other ameni-ties include a laundry room of 15 washers and 10 dryers
BY ALEX MITCHELLMany a north bound travel-
ler has spent too much time ne-gotiating the roadway where the Bruckner Expressway meets the NYS Thruway. Now, a project to reduce that corri-dor’s congestion has received the go ahead and by 2022 the highway nightmare should be ‘a thing of the past’.
Since 2015, Assemblyman Michael Benedetto, working with the NYS Department of Transportation, has success-fully launched a $33 million traffi c mitigation improve-ment plan along I-95 between Country Club Road, Pelham Parkway and the Hutchinson River Parkway.
Included in the plan is a new exit into Co-op City from the Hutch that will allow Co-op City bound drivers to stay
on the northbound parkway, exiting onto the Hutchinson River Parkway West service road in Section 5.
Contracts will be awarded by year’s end with work com-mencing by the spring of 2020.
Major components of the project will include: adding a new travel lane north of exit 8B, which is currently an ‘Exit Only’ lane to City Island and Orchard Beach; improve-ments to the current I-95 and Pelham Parkway ramp con-fi gurations; as well as the new exit ramp on the Hutch to Co-op City.
“Most of the changes are directed at alleviating a lot of the I-95 (north) corridor backup that exist beginning around the Country Club Road exit and extends past Pelham Parkway,” said Bene-
detto, adding he applauded the NYSDOT plan for its “creativ-ity and thinking outside of the box.”
Besides the volume of traf-fi c on these roadways that ne-cessitate the new measures, NYSDOT believes that the amount of entrances and ex-its on the I-95 north roadway over a short distance is a ma-jor factor contributing to the traffi c slow down, indicated Benedetto.
The existing I-95 entrances at Pelham Bay Station and Pelham Parkway will be re-aligned to reduce the number of vehicular and pedestrian crossovers that cause the northbound bottlenecks.
In addition, traffi c travel-ling east on Pelham Parkway will now have direct access to

— Research and evidence are beginning to emerge that Swit-zerland, known more for its banking system that allows the world’s criminal rich to hide their billions in numbered accounts there, was involved in a relatively big way in the transatlantic slave trade and the umbrella organization that regional governments have established to win compensa-tion for slavery will soon add it to its defendants list.
A recent video conference meeting involving representa-tives from 12 of the 15 nation-al reparations commissions heard stunning evidence from a Swiss researcher who has in recent years been reviewing Switzerland’s role in the trade that brought hundreds of Afri-cans to the Caribbean and the Americans in general to work on agricultural plantations without a cent in payment.
Dr. Hans Hassler argued that the region needs to know that while the northern European

in Manhattan ordered Presi-dent Trump’s administration to remove a controversial citizenship question on the forthcoming 2020 census. U.S. District Judge Jesse M. Furman rejected the Depart-ment of Commerce’s deci-sion to add the question.
The contentious question, which asks aboutthe citizen-ship status of each household member, has come under fire since the Census Bureau announced its inclusion early last year. Many immigration advocacy groups have largely opposed the question citing that requiring respondents to state their citizenship sta-tus will lead to further mis-counting — in communities already undercounted due to fear. Such groups, like the Queens-based organization — Desis Rising Up and Mov-ing (DRUM), have worked tirelessly to raise awareness in neighborhoods with high concentrations of immi-grants from Asia and the Caribbean, informing them to speak out.
Not since 1950 has a question on the census form asked its takers about their citizenship status. In his opinion, Furman said reviv-ing it, “would depress the count for already “hard-to-count” groups — particu-larly noncitizen and Hispan-ics — whose members would be less likely to participate in the census for fear that the data could be used against them or their loved ones.”

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportu-nity for our newspapers to share the stories of how lo-cal communities come together to battle breast can-cer, and herald those suffering for the spirit needed to fight this disease during their difficult journey to good health.
We hope you enjoy our “Pink Paper” edition and its inspirational stories. If you are looking for addi-tional details about breast cancer, opportunities to volunteer, or resources for someone fighting the dis-ease, please reach out to the American Cancer Soci-ety at cancer.org/about-us/local/new-york.html.

re you impressed with our beautiful pink cover recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness month? I hope so, and I do hope you stop and
read the pages that give you — both men and women — information that can save your life.
As a breast-cancer survivor myself I know the critical need for timely mammograms. I was getting my annual gynecology checkup when the doctor said: “I don’t like what I feel here; let’s go upstairs and get you a mammogram right away!” I did, and within a week, I was at the office of renowned breast surgeon Dr. Karen Kostroff, being tested for breast cancer. I was lucky; after surgery they told me I did have Stage One breast cancer, but that only radiation, and a daily pill, were necessary.
I tremble to think about what could have happened if I had not had that annual check up. No doubt my story would be very different. I urge everyone to be checked annually — yes, even men can have breast cancer.
Our writers have valuable information for you, so read it and take action right away!
I am proud and privileged to offer the critically im-portant information you will find in the Pink issue — our first to be published under the Schneps Com-munity News Group ownership. Read it, save it, and pass it along to a friend.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for us all to redouble our efforts to eradicate the second-leading killer of women in America.
Schneps Community News Group’s annual “Pink Paper” is dedicated to our local resources, research-ers, support teams, and survivors — because we share the struggle, and are mindful of the sobering
statistics and excruciating toll of this deadly disease. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are:
-cer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, including 17,890 in New York.
breast cancer before the year’s end, including 2,390 in New York.
-nosed with the disease in her lifetime.
-nosed with breast cancer.
woman dies of breast cancer in our country.
of cases occur in women with no family history of breast cancer.
-ple in the U.S. with a history of breast cancer, includ-ing women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.
Like most people, we have had friends and family battle cancer. Anyone who has watched the impact of this terrible disease on sufferers and their loved ones understands the urgency for a cure.
