Our Lady’s missionaries will be leaving shortly for Cambodia! Last year, we were able to let our BB5 kids go shopping and buy something for themselves. It was the first time they had the opportunity, and it was great fun to see them spend their money--$10 each--carefully. As you can see, money goes a long way in Cambodia.

Pictured left to right: Samnang, Srey Soth, Srey Leang, Mara, Chan Ra, Srey Leak, and our very own Joe Dickman.

Next weekend, May 11-12, our missionaries will

be in the Gathering Space after all Masses to collect any donations you’d like to make for this year’s shopping trip. We thank you in advance!

Blessing for Expectant Parents May 12

All expectant parents are invited and encouraged to attend the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Mother’s Day to receive the Blessing of Parents before Childbirth.

“A husband and wife participate in God’s love through the sacrament of marriage and cooperate in the gift of life through the conception of a child. It is appropriate that they receive God’s blessings together as they wait in faith and hope for the birth of their child.” –The Book of Blessings

Loving When Others Hate; Believing When Others Doubt: Smiling When Others Frown

- Kyle Callahan

I smile when I am at church. No matter what my current circumstance, walking into Our Lady never ceases to re-instill the joy in my heart. The joy of God, the joy of fellowship, the joy of my brothers and sisters in Christ, coming from all walks of life, each here with a common purpose: to further ourselves as disciples. What a beautiful thing.

Let’s face it. Many times, we see ugliness in our world. Apathy and bitterness seem to rule our daily existence sometimes, and so few people seem to have hope. That should create in us two reactions… First, to be forever grateful to God for providing this church family we have in our midst, and all of its bountiful opportunities for growth. Second, and equally important, to commit to BEING Christ for our world. In our jobs and in our schools. In our social groups and in our families. When we see darkness, we must be the light, as Jesus told us we would be. We must love when everyone else is hating. We must hope when everyone else is despairing. We must believe, when everyone else is doubting (see 1Corinthians 13).

In a hurting world, we are called to be healers by God. Our Church expects us to be active in our secular world, and to be a positive influence in every interaction we have. Let us strive to be reminded of that as we go throughout this week, in our normal lives.

This is not an easy task. We must count on our God and one another, as sources of strength for our journey. Our job is not to simply feel satisfied with our faith, but to bring it to others, as signs of strength, signs of hope, signs of love. For this, we were chosen… and THIS is why I smile.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is offering “Grieving with Great Hope,” a workshop for people mourning the loss of a loved one. It will take place Friday, May 17, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 18, from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

“Grieving with Great Hope” is presented by Good Mourning Ministry, a Catholic bereavement apostolate founded by John and Sandy O’Shaughnessy. Both have been through their own valley of grief and, in this workshop, will offer personal and professional insights on what can help as you journey through yours.

Using Google Chrome, visit OurLadyOfPerpetualHelp.net to register. There is a $20 registration fee.

No Internet? Call the parish office at 614-875-3322 for help with registration.

For more details, visit www.goodmourningministry.net, or email John and Sandy at [email protected].

This program has helped thousands of people mourn the loss of a loved one. We are delighted to bring this workshop to our parish and hope and pray you’ll consider attending it.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

Four Courageous ConversationsGIVING VOICE TO OUR PAIN

Our Lady of Perpetual Help ChurchTuesday, May 7, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Why Courageous Conversations? We need safe places and relationships to face and respond to the Catholic Church Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis. We need opportunities to gather to reflect, pray, and listen to each other.

These places need to be safe in every way – psychologically, spiritually, and physically — because it’s risky and vulnerable to sort things out in community through conversations. “Safety” means that the conversations need solid guidance, structure, and clear boundaries so as to help people listen to each other in love. The Four Courageous Conversations framework provides the safety and guidance for us to talk with one another in confidence about the unthinkable. All responses will be anonymously recorded and will become the basis of a report to Bishop Brennan.

+ Courageous Conversation #1: Sharing Our Hearts

+ Courageous Conversation #2: On Roots and Causes

+ Courageous Conversation #3: Speaking Our Truth

+ Courageous Conversation #4: What Now? What Next?

Facilitated by: Dr. Dobie Moser of Mustard Seed Consultants

IMPORTANT: A REPORT FROM THIS MEETING WILL BE SENT TO BISHOP BRENNAN.

Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see that they do not remain as they are.

– St. Augustine of Hippo

Respect Life Ministry Events May 25 & 26

Do you know how to talk to others about abortion? Do people know you’re Catholic and ask you questions on why the Church is pro-life, sometimes leaving you not knowing how to answer? Our Lady’s Respect Life Ministry will host Gabe Vance from Created Equal on Saturday, May 25, after the 5:00 p.m. Mass in the life Center. He will present “Abortion 101: How to engage others on abortion.” The only cost is a freewill offering.

The Knights of Columbus and the Respect Life Ministry will also pray a Rosary for Life in the church on Sunday, May 26, at 1:15 p.m. This is open to the entire parish. Following the Rosary, Knights of Columbus Perpetual Help Council 4603 will start a Novena for Life. This will be a nine-day prayer with a different intention, reflection, and act of reparation every day. The Novena will end on June 3 with praying the Angelus and the Rosary in the church at 6:00 p.m. The Knights are encouraging all members of the Parish to pray this Novena. Please email James Allan at [email protected] with any questions.

Fr. Jim’s Inklings: Gert’s Ram

“Gert is walking up the lane! Keep that ram away from her!” my dad cried. As Grandma made her way up the walk to the picnic table out back, carrying her family-favorite cherry pie and jug of sweet tea, my twin sisters put forth the necessary effort to hold back that sheep of my father’s concern. My brothers lifted her fruit pie and Lipton iced sugar water to ease her journey up the large sandstone steps. I took her by the arm like a prom-date escort to the outdoor dining spot. My dad set up the new lawn chairs for the occasion. He had “just the right one” for his mother. She took her seat while my mom prepared her plate.

“Where are the twins? What trouble are they getting into now?” she asked, chuckling. She was about to find out.

Mom handed Grandma her plate of hamburger, homemade baked beans, potato salad, pickled beets, green beans in house cured ham, corn on the cob, green onions, and that sweet tea we so fondly welcomed at every picnic. Grandma took her seat in one of the new lawn chairs with her plate of food nestled in her lap.

We heard the hair-raising scream from around the other side of the house. “He’s loose! He’s loose,” screamed the twins. “Get him! We can’t get him!” they warned. The ram came around from the back of the house at full clip. He ran right passed Gertrude, turned on a dime, and charged full bore into her. Gert flew back over her chair. Her plate of food went everywhere. My dad straddled the ram and wrestled it to the dirt. We all thought the same thing: if Grandma was still alive, she was certainly seriously injured.

She got up on her own accord and insisted: “Someone take a picture of me! No one is going to believe that a dumb sheep did this! You think Jesus really knew the depths of what he was talking about when he wanted St. Peter to feed his sheep? I’d say St. Peter found out.”

www.OurLadyofPerpetualHelp.net • To Form and Send Intentional, Missionary Disciples of Jesus Christ 8

MAY 5, 2019

Dear Parishioners:

On Easter Sunday I shared two resurrection stories—one from the letter I received from a newly baptized Catholic, and one from the drawing by Isaiah, a third grader in our school. The explosion of God’s abundant grace has been remarkable as people have absorbed these stories and reflected on how they feed our mission to form and send intentional, missionary disciples of Jesus Christ.

That explosion of grace is captured in this year’s BAA theme—God Makes Every Grace Abundant.

We first combined the Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) and Our Lady Appeal (OLA) in 2012, twinning our commitment to the BAA, which has always been very important to me, with the OLA that allows for the capital needs of our vibrant campus. In the last eight years, you have generously pledged more than $2,000,000 and allowed us to do our fair share in the diocese, as well as undertake many capital projects.

Through the BAA, we support numerous services and programs that no one parish can provide on its own. I’ve always been committed to and passionate about that part of the appeal—especially the services that care for the poor among us. Last year our BAA goal was $162,000. This year, we aim to raise $165,000.

Last year, our pledges exceeded the BAA goal by $110,000. That OLA money came back into our parish, free of the six percent diocesan assessment. We paid off the parking lot repaving, purchased a new tractor with all the attachments, and installed the new audio system in the nave.

Our focus for the OLA is a little different this year. Our “new” church building is approaching its 20-year anniversary… and the wear and tear is beginning to show. Just imagine the thousands who have passed through the Gathering Space, Life Center, hallways, and nave. So, just as you would in your own home, we will update and replace carpeting, paint, artwork, and furniture. We will also add storage space and update audio/video components.

In the nave are new candlesticks, introduced at Easter, which enhance the contemporary beauty of our worship space. Karen Cook, Amy McKenzie, David Frea, Kevin Radwanski and I went to Pittsburgh recently to visit a Catholic church goods warehouse. The proprietor receives items from Catholic churches that are closing, or otherwise shedding items, and then refurbishes and resells them to other Catholic churches, guaranteeing their preservation. We just fell in love with the “new” traditional candlesticks which beautifully enhance our liturgical space.

We will also invest in permanent hymnals/missalettes to replace our current disposables which are used for only a few months. These sturdy new books should last more than 15 years and we will see a return on our investment in just two years. They also meet Pope Francis’ call to care for our creation by eliminating unnecessary waste. In addition, if we are able to meet our goal, we wish to replace the broken movable divider wall in the church basement with a quality, soundproof version to give us two medium-sized rooms and/or one large meeting room.

This year’s OLA goal is quite attainable at $110,000 more than the $165,000 BAA for a total of $275,000.

Please support the 2019 BAA/OLA. Return your pledge envelope or make a gift through your Realm giving portal at onrealm.org/OurLadyOfPerpetualHelp. If you have not yet created your account, and would like to, please call the parish office at 614-875-3322 or email [email protected].

I’m so grateful for your generosity. Grace flows abundantly from each of you and I appreciate all you do for the needs of your parish, as well as the pledges you will make to the 2019 BAA/OLA. Thank you!

Love,

Fr. Dan

P.S. This BAA message is a perfect opportunity to mention that Fr. Jim, Deacon Michael and I have met our new bishop, Bishop Robert Brennan. His installation Mass was such a joyful experience! He is a passionate man—personable and wanting to be in relationship with his people. He will join us Thursday, May 30, at 8:30 a.m. to celebrate our final school Mass this year! I hope you can come and have the chance to meet our new shepherd.

What is Happening in Youth Faith Formation?

A number of parishioners have come to us with questions about how the children of our parish are being formed in our faith. We are so glad that so many of you care! Our Lady offers three programs for faith formation of youth.

Our Lady’s high school students attend Life Teen. Life Teen is a Eucharist-centered youth ministry specially designed for high school students. Life Teen meets on Sunday evenings throughout the school year and at various times during the summer months.

Our middle school students are part of Edge. Edge is a dynamic middle school ministry offering a Catholic community where kids can get answers to their questions about faith, and experience Jesus in a profound and personal way. Edge meets on Thursday evenings throughout the school year.

For children in preschool through fifth grade, we offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). CGS is a Montessori-based faith formation program led by specially-trained, certified catechists. CGS classes are offered at various times on Sundays, as well as Thursday evenings. CGS has three levels based on age. This diocesan-approved program helps children fall more deeply in love with Christ and His Church, while learning about Sacred Scripture and the Mass. We will be using this space in the bulletin to bring you news from CGS, so that you can learn more about this amazing program! We thank you for your support and prayers.

May God bless you!

Life in the Atrium: Communication

Over these last few years, a number of parents and grandparents have asked our catechists how to engage with their children about work in the atrium. Since we do not use tests or worksheets in the atrium, some parents might not know what their children are doing or what to ask them about their work. At any given day in the atrium, different small groups of children receive different presentations. Each child has their own connection moment at different times. We simply plant the seeds, not knowing when they will sprout and bear fruit. So please be patient with your child. Know that they are on their own journey of knowledge, prayer, and devotion. You may want to ask, “What work did you do in the atrium today?” What have you been wondering about?” “Do you see anything in the atrium you recognize from the Church?” We are so grateful for your interest and participation in your child’s faith life. We continue to pray for your families.
