Transcript of Schenker’s Concept of Melody II: Compound Melody.
Points to Remember:1. Compound Melody or Polyphonic Melody = single melody that suggests 2 independent lines (for Schenker found in nearly all music)
2. Melodies, esp. leaps, imply motion to /from inner voices.
3. Ascending leaps sometimes result from an inner voice being “flipped” into a higher register
4. Corollary to ƒ3: the structural melodic line does not always have to include the highest tone.
5. Archetype for antecedent/consequent phrases = incomplete descent from tone of tonic triad to ^2 followed by complete descent from same note to ^1
