Judge John G. Cummings Professionalism Award

Beginning in 2012, the St. Clair County Mock Trial Competition sought to recognize participating teams for their level of professionalism that they display during the Mock Trial Competition. The Judge John G. Cummings Professionalism Award is presented to the team judged most professional by their opposing teams. In the words of Judge John G. Cummings:

“…how do we measure professionalism?

- RESPECT for others - being a GOOD LISTENER - PUNCTUALITY - appropriate APPEARANCE - proper LANGUAGE - making EYE CONTACT to express one’s interest

…the everyday tools of the true professional – integrity, honesty and ethics”

Following each round of the competition, each team completes an evaluation form which rates the opposing team in the areas of appearance, proficiency in addressing the judge and jury, compliance with Mock Trial rules, attitude and persuasion. The form provides a rubric to effectively assess and award each area a score for that round. Once all the rounds are completed, the scores are tabulated to determine the winner.

professionalism. (noun) 1 : the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person

COURT BAILIFFS

Every year very dedicated and respectful officers of the St. Clair County Sheriff Department give up their entire Saturday to serve as Court Officers/Bailiffs of the St. Clair County High School Mock Trial Tournament. TEACHER COACHES: MANY THANKS to the following TEACHERS who have given their time and talents, along with shouldering additional expenses (not covered by the School District), to teach Mock Trial to some VERY talented and exceptional young men and women who participated in the 2017 St. Clair County High School Mock Trial Competition. Review the short bio on each of these teacher coaches, and you will see why we have such awesome kids performing so well in our competition.

MOCK TRIAL 2017 VOLUNTEER TEAM: Our Mock Trial Tournament would not be possible without the work of our very dedicated VOLUNTEER CORPS. This team, many of whom have worked Mock Trial EVERY year, works together under the leadership of DOUG JONES, to pull together all of the behind the scenes activities which make our competition seem so together - from greeting team members and general public, to monitoring hallways and directing to courtrooms and courthouse facilities, to taping rounds, to distributing munchies, to coordinating distribution and collection of score sheets, to taking pictures, to tabulation of scores, to applauding for a round well done. WE SIMPLY COULD NOT OFFER THE PROFESSIONAL PRODUCT WE HAVE CRAFTED IN THE ST. CLAIR COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION WITHOUT THIS VOLUNTEER FORCE. MANY, MANY, MANY THANKS TO:

Therese Ongie Bob Wiley Debbie Lepley Christine Regan Leeann Eble Kathy Wurmlinger Kristy Jones Debbie Furay Mia Schrader Lisa Birtles Matt Troy Athena Schrader Darci Falter Brenda Vansickle Helena Schrader Mary Palmateer

IT TAKES a special person and a ton of personal time and dedication to solicit and manage our volunteer staff so that an undertaking this big runs smoothly; DOUG JONES cheerfully invests hours and hours of help with managing and directing our Volunteer Force, compiling and reporting the scoring, providing Coach packets at the end of the competition, etc., etc., etc., AND EVERY YEAR for now 12 Years! Mock Trial is blessed to have the support and huge investment of time and effort from 72nd DISTRICT COURT CHIEF PROBATION OFFICER DOUG JONES; THANK YOU, DOUG!

THANK YOU also to GWYN ATKINSON LEWIS, who each year has taken on the responsibility for soliciting and coordinating all of the funding for Mock Trial. Despite the GWYN’s now having TWO (2) active little ones, she has still expended countless hours of her own private time, BY PERSONALLY contacting St. Clair County Bar Association Members, and now others in our community - including making trips to each law office to raise the funds to allow the presentation of Mock Trial 2017; GWYN is continually reviewing and correcting drafts, contacting our suppliers, reviewing records and supplying information – all with her little ones in tow. None of this event would be possible without GWYN's assistance. And JEFF RONAN – not just our Information Technology person extraordinaire, but a true artist who gives HOURS of his expertise and hours and hours of personal time to help with making ad copy which absolutely blows us away, (AND FIRES US UP!), with the pictures, and making our awards ceremony absolutely outstanding – and fun! THANK YOU, JEFF.
