32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 601 N. 4th, St. Charles, MO 63301

Parish Vision Statement: We are the parish that, through our communion with Jesus, guided by the Holy Spirit:

Welcomes all; Celebrates our unity, diversity, and traditions; Uses God’s gifts to serve and teach others and be the face of Jesus Christ in the Community.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

From the Pastor’s Pen Borromeo Trip to Rome or Holy Land

If anyone is interested in going on a trip with Bor-romeo members and myself, please let me know. A few have expressed some interest in going to the Canoniza-tions of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II—which would be great but crowded and probably more expen-sive. Let me know what you think via email, or in per-son.

National Geographic Movie “Jerusalem” this Friday, November 15 A few of us may be going to the Science Center to see Jerusalem at the Omnimax. Let me know via email if you are interested.

Give Thanks for Parish Catechists The newly founded National Religious Education Week was November 3-9. If you or your children take part in your parish religious education and formation programs, be sure to remember to thank the volunteer catechists who work tirelessly to live, share and nurture your Catholic faith and the faith of your children. 1. Pray for them. Your prayers joined with theirs will

bring great blessings upon the ministry, the parish and your family.

2. Encourage them. They are your support, and you are theirs. Let them know that they are making a difference through a kind word or written note.

3. Help them. Don’t let concerns about your limita-tions keep you from offering your time. There is something for everyone to do!

Check out the large board in the Narthex highlighting some of our catechists we are so grateful for.

In Memoriam In the month of November, it is a centuries-old tra-dition of the Catholic Church to remember all those who have passed on. We pray for our deceased beloved at every Mass and in our daily prayer and actions of love inspired by their good example. Here at Borromeo we have a couple of ways to celebrate your loved ones and all are invited to participate. 1. Write the names of your loved ones in our Book of

Remembrance near the Tabernacle. 2. Bring pictures of your loved ones to be placed by the

Tabernacle and our Lady’s statue (to be picked up before Thanksgiving).

Good News of Jesus Working in our Borromeo Family

All Souls Memorial Mass I am always so moved at this Mass which this year was last Saturday at 5pm—especially seeing all together those who are mourning their loss of a loved one from this past year. And then we see Jesus and our Church family giving so much love and hope to each other. We all are so grateful to Mary Kutchback who does so much for this Mass and our parish’s grief ministry and to those who are sick or homebound, including hand-stitching the names on the yearly banner of each parish sister/brother who passed this year. We also thank Carol Faubert who works so much behind the scenes in getting our church ready for these celebrations. I am also so impressed by the beautiful tables of Re-membrance arranged by our Latina sisters. Thanks to Phil and Beth Duello, Julie McGeorge and her son Mike, Vickie Grant, Sandy Boschert, Barb Bizelli and all who helped so lovingly. One of our parishioners sent this note:

“My husband has been gone for 3 years now, but my family gathers every year at this Mass to light a candle and celebrate his life. You will never know how much your invitation to the All Souls Mass meant to me and my family the year Joe passed. And it is still special to us. Thank you for this special time.”

Help Needed . . . for our Church decorating at Thanksgiving and Christmas and Easter, etc., through our Art & Environ-ment Ministry. We need artistic designers and helpers—and there are no meetings! Let me know if you are in-terested or if you know of some gifted member whom you would like to nominate.

Pope Francis ...has some amazingly inspiring and practical homilies every day. You can read all and watch some on www.news.va/en/sites/reflections (the official Vatican Network). Praise God the Holy Spirit for speaking through our Holy Father.

Prayer of the Week Here I am, Lord—body, heart, and soul.

Grant that with Your help, we together may be big enough to reach the world,

and small enough to be at one with You.

Your brother in Jesus, Father John

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, November 10, 2013

We offer our prayerful sympathy to the family of Patricia Ann Yanics, wife of Bob and mother of Bob (and Re-gina); and to John Walendy (and Pat) on the death of his father Marlin Walendy. May they, and all the faithful departed, rest in peace.

Homebound, Critically Ill or in the Hospital? If you are homebound and wish to receive the Eucharist, or receive a visit while in the hospital, please call Mary Kutchback at 946-9758 or the parish office at 946-1893.

Please pray for our loved ones who are hospitalized or ill, including: Bill Powers, Melissa Knoll, Jeff Wittenauer, Arturo Garcia Zamacona

and all who are dealing with long term illnesses

In honor of our parish’s Feast Day, the builders of the 1791 Historic Log Church will have a special Open House for Borromeo members TODAY, Sunday, November 10 from 11am to 1pm. A spokes-person will be on hand to describe the building techniques used to bring this bit of our history back to life. Gospel Reflection We believe that life does not end when we die. When we die our lives change. We pass into a beautiful Communion with God, who wants all people to live with Him forever. Hell is separation from God for eternity. We can choose to separate from God. When we sin we separate from God by our own free choice. Jesus warns that if we do not love our neighbor and care for others we will be separated from Him. We believe that those who die in friendship with God will live with Him forever. By His saving death and resurrection Jesus Christ has saved us.

— How does the belief in an afterlife help us to live as followers of Jesus?

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.” (2 Thessalonians 2: 16-17)

God wants us to know the joy of giving. Yet, being gen-erous takes strength, trust and grace. That’s why St. Paul reminds us to turn to God every day for encour-agement and guidance on our stewardship journey

We pray that we may have the grace and the courage to share our gifts in a way that is pleasing to God, the abundant giver of all gifts.

BLOOD DRIVE

Mission Trip News! In addition to Santa Claus, Yes, Virginia, there is a GOD!! And God blesses us as only God can, with so much that it is only right that God sends us out to do good works. We will find more love on this earth, and grow in our own journey of love with God. We had a lot more pictures and video to compile but have finally completed the 2013 Parish Mission Trip DVD!

We want to share with you the fruits of your sacrifices and investment and will be showing a short-length DVD at the Masses on the weekend of November 16/17. This presenta-tion is meant to do several things: Illustrate the true power of the Holy Spirit within our

parish, and how lives are positively changed; Show all that has been created from your generous do-

nations and support; Expand our parish family beyond our immediate fami-

lies, and beyond the literal and figurative “walls” that keep us apart;

Initiate a yearning in YOU to join in on the love, laugh-ter, and all that this blessing from God has to offer—we want even more of our parish to feel His love—join us in 2014!

And most importantly, to thank God for all He does for us!

Presenting the Mission Trip DVD from this past summer also kicks off the 2014 effort for the Borromeo Mission Trip to Mexico!! We will be traveling to Tijuana, Mexico on July 19—26, 2014! With this kick-off, we will be asking that you: Spend some time this week specifically praying to God

on what role He wants for you to play in this ministry—maybe there are several.

Think about joining us for 2014, and grow in your own relationship with God and Jesus—early indications for 2014 are that God’s plan for this effort continues to grow. This trip, through the Holy Spirit, transforms all, no matter the age.

Support the trip through your continued generous do-nations to either the general fund or for a specific Youth, or both! Perhaps get a group of parishioners together to pay for the cost of a youth. Or perhaps a parish ministry you are in or a business you have can sponsor a youth through a fundraiser or direct dona-tion!!

Whether to join in on the fun directly or by financially sup-porting this effort, lives will be forever changed and we all will be closer to Jesus!

We plan on having several informational meetings in the near future to be able to give out more details. Please con-tact me if you have any questions: 636-541-3745.

Thank you, and most of all Thank God for all His love and blessings. Ron Weisar

Religious Give Thanks “Thank you for accompanying us as we care for our elder sisters,” writes a religious superior. Your gift of $1,114 to last week’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps support nearly 34,000 sisters, broth-ers, and religious order priests past age 70. If you forgot your gift last week, it is not too late to offer it. May God bless you abundantly for your goodness.

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL will be Saturday, November 16 at 9:00am in the church office. Donuts and coffee after Mass. Join us for a refreshing hour of discussing the following day’s readings. For a ride or information, call Barb at 636-947-3939.

Dear Parishioners,

Today’s first reading provides us with a great example of supernatural prudence. Clearly, if the seven brothers were natu-rally prudent, they would eat pork to save their own lives. Reminds me of “kid” days when you would cross your fingers behind your back while assuring someone that you are sincere in what you’re saying! Now we know that God expects us to use the gift of our lives prudently by taking care of our bodies, by not taking unnecessary risks that would endanger our lives, and so on. But to the seven brothers, to honor, respect, and obey the laws of God were far more prudent than simply living. And so we read of the martyrdom of each in turn. How fitting to read in Thessalonians that Jesus Himself wants to encourage our hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. Thank God that we are not alone in our journey of faith!

Students and faculty at SCB are collecting canned foods this month. This is our annual November collection for providing food for the poor through the St. Vincent dePaul Society. We encourage you to donate canned goods as well. None of us enjoys missing a meal and when the weather turns to fall and winter, the prospect of going without seems pretty bleak.

I do thank each of you for your blessings to our school and parish community. I know many people support us through donations of used paper, newspaper, printer cartridges and the like. I also thank you for your continued support in prayer and financially.

God bless, Mrs. Hoffman

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, November 10, 2013

SCB Mini Vinnies will be Freez’n 4 A Reason November 16th – 17th. To raise awareness and understanding of the plight of the homeless, students will setup and reside outside on the tree lot in a “Box City” for eighteen hours. The parish is invited to visit Box City to talk with the students.

Homelessness is not just a big city issue—it can be found right here in our parish boundaries. In 2012 the SCB St. Vincent de Paul assisted 10 individuals with $2300 worth of temporary lodging, and in the first 5 months of 2013 they have assisted 11 individuals. Many of those assisted were single mothers and their children. These numbers do not completely represent the amount of good that SVDP does in the effort to prevent homelessness. The number of referrals for the homeless from outside our parish boundaries to other agencies, such as St. J & A, St. Patrick Center, and Rev. Rice are not tracked.

The generous support the SCB Parish has shown the Mini Vinnies over the past two F4ARs is greatly appreciated! We are not asking for any financial support for this year’s event. In the past the funds were used to provide Spring Food Boxes. The MV will again be providing food boxes, but with existing funds. We do ask that you support the kids by stopping by the boxes and letting them share with you what they have learned about the condition of homelessness and how it af-fects kids just like them. We also ask that you join us in supporting this year’s partner agency by helping to TP the St. Patrick Center with your generous donations of toilet paper.

SPEAKER: Tom Etling, CEO St. Patrick Center November 16th 7:30 p.m. St. Charles Borromeo Café

Please join the Mini Vinnies in the Borromeo Café at 7:30 p.m. for a presentation by Tom Etling, CEO of the St. Patrick Center. The St. Patrick Center is the largest provider of homeless services in Missouri, with more than 20 housing, employment and mental health programs that assist more than 9,000 persons annually who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. We plan to show our support of the St. Patrick Center by TPing the Center. Please bring your generous donations of toilet paper to Mass on November 16th & 17th.

Serving Those Who Serve Today we support our family and friends who have served this nation with distinction. The Collection for the Archdio-cese for the Military Services will provide the Gospel, the sac-raments and other forms of spiritual support to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces wherever they serve, no matter the circumstances. Please prayerfully con-sider a generous contribution to the first-ever national Collec-tion for the Archdiocese for the Military Services.

CEI and Catholic Teaching The Children’s Education Initiative (CEI) will provide up to $72 million in scholarships for nonpublic school chil-dren. The U.S. Catholic Bishops strongly support giving parents choices in their children’s education: “Parents—the first and most important educators—have a funda-mental right to choose the education best suited to the needs of their children, including public, private, and religious schools. Government, through such means as tax credits and publicly funded scholarships, should help provide resources for parents, especially those of modest means, to exercise this basic right without discrimina-tion.” (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, 2012) Please join with the Missouri Bishops in seeking passage of CEI. For more information contact the Mis-souri Catholic Conference at 800-456-1679 or [email protected].

When we pray in thanksgiving to Our Lord for all of the many blessings in our lives, the mobility afforded by our cars certainly should make the list. During this Thanks-giving season, please consider donating a car, boat, or motorcycle to Vinnie’s Autos, a car donation and transfer program of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul. If you would like to donate or to help us in our mission, please telephone Greg Mar-ino, Vinnie’s Autos program coordina-tor, at 314-881-6005.

Thanks to All Veterans One of the first soldiers he lost in Iraq wasn’t an American citizen. His story began like many others who come to this country seeking a better life while giving back to their communi-ties. Some do it through public service jobs and volunteerism, others in our churches and community centers. He chose to do it through military service, but he lacked citizenship when he made his Final Journey home—despite the fact his sacrifice for our nation was just as enduring as those born here. “My war experiences give me a perspective on this issue that very few others have. While in command of U.S. op-erations in Kosovo and Iraq, I learned the importance of controlling the borders—it was literally a life and death issue. “The bill that passed the Senate is a fair mix of proposals to secure our borders while providing immigrants an oppor-tunity to give back to this great nation they already call home. “This is the right approach, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting it. “All the best, LTG (Ret.) Ricardo Sanchez” For more info: votevets.org/immigration-reform.

Joke of the Week On the first day of school, the children brought gifts for their teacher. The supermarket manager’s daughter brought the teacher a basket of assorted fruit. The florist’s son brought the teacher a bouquet of flowers. The candy-store owner’s daughter gave the teacher a pretty box of candy. Then the liquor-store owner’s son brought up a big, heavy box with the store’s name on it. The teacher lifted it up and noticed that it was leaking a little bit . . . She touched a drop of the liquid with her finger and tasted it. “Is it wine?” she guessed. “No,” the boy replied. She tasted another drop and asked, “Champagne?” “No,” said the little boy . . . “It’s a puppy!”
