NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Page 2: Schedule of Holy Mass - SCB Parishborromeoparish.com/Old-Site/bulletins/August 12, 2012.pdf · How can your family make Sunday a special day for God and each other? Start each week

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Welcome Back to School! All our SCB Parish Family and myself are excited to see each young person come back for another exciting school year to learn and grow and pray together through our outstanding school, PSR and Youth Ministries, the Academy, Duchesne, etc. Our parish family rightfully makes a huge commitment to helping our young grow in faith, hope and love through what-ever path and plan God has for each one. Each child is pre-cious and beloved by God and by us. Today is Catechetical Sunday on which we bless and pray for and appreciate each teacher and staff member who are shining the Light and Love of Jesus to our children through their witness and sacrifice. As they are commissioned at the 8:30 and 11:30 Masses, keep them and our youth and our catechetical programs in your prayers. And let them know how grateful we are to them. And thank you for being so generous in financially supporting them through your weekly contributions.

SCB Unity Day Mass and Picnic in the Park

Our 5th Annual Borromeo Parish Unity Day 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 9, 2012

at Bales-DuSable Park (No 10:00 or 11:30am Masses in Church)

I and our whole staff personally hope and pray each one of you and every family, who are proud to call Borromeo our home, will come together to celebrate our Unity in Jesus Christ and His Holy Communion. We will have a special in-volvement and blessing for all our children who are preparing this year for First Holy Communion—the Sacrament of Unity. Because it is so important, we have decided to cancel the 10am and 11:30am Masses in church and have the Mass in the Park at 11:00am on September 9. One of many reasons is so the choir and others can join us. Let’s all come together and show our love for Jesus in all our sisters and brothers regardless of our backgrounds—how we truly are One Body of Christ here at St. Charles Borromeo. We are truly sisters and brothers with all Catholics in our Faith and Church.

Questions Catholics Are Asked Why do you worship wafers?

A consecrated host or wafer at a Catholic Mass is the true Body and Blood of Christ, not merely bread; so Catholics are worshiping Jesus, not a wafer. In the Gospel of John (6:51-56), Jesus states repeatedly that “he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life” (6:54). He is speaking liter-ally, and He is so firm that many followers object and leave Him (6:52, 60, 66). St. Paul agrees with this interpretation and writes that those taking Communion “in an unworthy

manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27—see also 1 Cor 10:16). We don’t sin against someone's “body and blood” by destroying a photo-graph (which is a mere symbol) of the person. Moreover, in the Last Supper passages (Mt 26:26-28; Mk 14:22-24, Lk 22:19-20), nothing suggests a metaphorical or symbolic inter-pretation. The Last Supper was the Jewish feast of Passover. This involved a sacrificial lamb, and Jesus referred to His im-minent suffering (Lk 22:15-16; 21-22). John the Baptist had already called Him the “Lamb of God” (Jn 1:29).

Taking Back Sunday Sunday is God’s Family Day

God created the Sabbath for us as a day of rest (which God did not really need, but we do!). If we are busy all the time, we will be no good to anyone, or as Pope Benedict said, “We will end up in spiritual barrenness and emptiness of heart.” How can your family make Sunday a special day for God and each other? Start each week off right by going to Mass Go out for brunch or a picnic Discuss God’s Word and homily (= what you heard God

saying to you, not rating the preacher) Get outside—bike or hike or ball games Resist the temptation to shop or do housework, or catch

up on other tasks from the week Laugh with jokes and family games Share family stories and memories with pictures Pray alone and with family Start a new tradition for your family which is really one of the oldest traditions of humanity: enjoying off time with God and family and friends before it is too late.

A Prayer for a New School Year Dear Lord, as we begin this new school year,

we gather once again as your community of believers. We thank You for the energy and the spirit

that You renewed in us through the summer months. We thank You for the time to enjoy our family and friends

and to reflect on what is important in our lives. Let this year be marked by enthusiasm and love so that,

with the inspiration of Your Spirit, we may continue to grow in our faith.

Help us to fulfill Your hope for us with honest intentions and works of faith.

Let us be gentle with ourselves and bring laughter, joy and love to others.

We ask this in your name. Amen.

Spread the Gospel, the Good News

about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

Your brother in Jesus, Father John

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” 1 KINGS 19:7

Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be diffi-cult, so He gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. When we take time to join our sacrifices with the sacri-fice of the Mass, we find the strength to give and joy in our giving.

We pray that, by sharing in the sacrifice of the Mass, we may find the strength and courage to make our own sacrifices to build up our Church and provide faith for the future.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Mission trip 2012

Going to Tijuana was a great experience for me personally, because I wanted to learn about my country of origin. All I knew was what stuff I had heard from my parents and stuff that I saw on my vacations to Acatic, my hometown. I also didn’t know many people that went and as the days went on I began to see that although there were people older than me, age was no obstacle - we were all equals. Our first day was hard. We didn’t know what was going on but we caught up fast.

That day I saw the Lord in every single person there. I didn’t know I had the strength in myself to pick up a shovel and fill buckets of gravel, I knew that if I were back home there was no way I was going to shovel up rocks to make cement. On the way home that day I was so ready for a shower!

Working on the three houses I learned that helping others is a great blessing and it strengthened my faith. Each day of work we enjoyed a fantastic meal made by the family of the house and local people.

Each day we also had a little time to relax after we had our little tour of Tijuana. We went to the border, walking down to the beach I read many of the notes written on the fence, I recall one that made a reference to the iron curtain. It was really sad to see what divided both of my worlds because although I have lived in the States most of my life I’m also a Mexican. At the orphanage everyone seemed scared at first, but soon after everyone was laughing and the room was full of joy. The language barrier was hardly noticeable. I was impressed when I looked over and my dad had two girls hang-ing from him like monkeys, he wasn’t the only one! It was amazing to see all the joy that we brought to the little girls with the pizza and the stuffed animals. They had a few babies a few months old they were so adorable I wanted to bring one home!

Another place that we had the opportunity to visit was La Casa Del Migrante (Home to the Migrant). This is an organiza-tion that was started in 1987 as an aid to those deported from the United States, it assures them shelter, food, and show-ers for up to twelve days. We shared a meal with them and we all had an opportunity to talk to people who were re-cently deported, many of the men there had lived in the States for a long time so they knew English. When we were about to leave we started to talk to people that were there in the patio and I learned that not only Mexicans were helped, I talked to a man that was from El Salvador and lived in L.A. I also learned that the world is a very small place— my dad was talking to a guy from Los Angeles who frequented places my dad knew. The guy told him that he looked familiar—like these brothers that lived near him. That guy ended up knowing my uncles that live in LA!

I am totally signed up to go help next year because I didn’t see danger which was my major concern in helping out. This was by far the best thing I have done this summer.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. —Mark Twain

Meet Your St. Vincent de Paul There’s not one simple explanation for what your St. Vincent de Paul Society does. The number of explana-tions is equal only to the number of diverse life stories the Society encounters each week. Families call in seek-ing assistance with an imminent need. The assistance may be as simple as a tank of gas, simple but pinnacle to maintaining the families’ minimal sources of income. Sometimes the situations are more complex, such as a family that has found itself on the verge of homelessness. Your St. Vincent de Paul volunteers go out in pairs to assist with navigating the many agencies that are avail-able to help. The volunteers assist with applying for rent/mortgage help and by contacting utilities to keep the power or water on. Your St. Vincent de Paul volun-teers are ready to help in any way that is needed.

Meet Colleen Harmon who has been a member of St. Vincent de Paul for 10 years. She has been in charge of the mentor program: helping new mem-bers team up with a SVDP member to acquaint them with the duties of mak-ing home visits and answering the calls on the hotline. The SVDP member

works with the new member until he or she feels com-fortable in taking the lead on making home visits and assessing the needs of clients. Colleen also serves as one of the co-chairs of the Giving Tree, making phone calls and evaluating the needs and wishes of our clients at Christmas time. Colleen will tell you it is truly a blessing to be a member of a Society whose sole purpose is to serve those in need. Did you know? SCB St. Vincent de Paul donated 1,284 volunteer

hours to serve the needy in our community between January and June, 2012.

Shopping list for August 25/26: beef stew, pears, tuna helper,

instant potatoes. bar soap, adult toothbrushes

On Saturday, September 29 your SCB St. Vincent de Paul will be joining conferences across the nation for the an-nual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run. We will be joining the Northwest District “Walk for the Poor” at Indian Camp Creek Park just north of Wentzville in Foristell. The one mile walk is around a lovely pond path adjacent to Pavilion #2. Watch the bulletin for information on how you can join the SCB Vinnies Team and for oppor-tunities to sponsor your SCB Vinnies Team. All funds raised remain in the parish, to assist the St. VdeP in their service to the poor. A special thank you to the Mini Vin-nies who will be assisting as proxy walkers for some members of the team. If you have any questions please contact Joyce Cain, 636-448-2021.

Love those computers . . . 1. When computing, whatever happens, behave as though

you meant it to happen. 2. When you get to the point where you really under-

stand your computer, it’s probably obsolete. 3. The first place to look for information is in the section

of the manual where you least expect to find it. 4. When the going gets tough—upgrade! 5. For every action, there is an equal and opposite mal-

function. 6. To err is human. . . to blame your computer for your

mistakes is even more human. It’s downright natural! 7. He who laughs last probably made a backup. 8. A complex system that does not work is invariably

found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

9. The number one cause of computer problems is com-puter solutions.

10. A computer program will always do what you tell it to do, but rarely what you want it to do.

A Different Kind of Cell: The Story of a Murderer Who Became A Monk

“I was in prison and you visited me.”

In 1998, Fr. Paul Jones, a Catholic priest and Trappist Monk from Missouri, answered our Lord’s call to serve one of the least of our brothers, Clayton Fountain. Fountain, regarded as the most dangerous person in the federal prison system, was thought to be beyond all hope of redemption. He was serving several life sen-tences for five violent murders, four committed with his bare hands while in solitary confinement. Entombed in a concrete and steel cell designed specifically for him, this ruthless murderer discovered that even he was not be-yond the limits of divine mercy.

Join us for a potluck dinner and discussion on August 28th at 6:30pm in the café.

St. Charles Borromeo Help-A-Student Program

Parents have the hardest job in the world, and young parents in our parish community need our loving support more than ever before. Besides struggling to provide the material needs of their children, they are dedicated to handing on their rich heritage of the Catho-lic faith. To provide financial assistance for those parents who cannot afford the full cost of tuition in our school, we appeal to you, their parish family members, to con-sider a contribution through our parish Help-A-Student program. When you support this program, you are giv-ing youngsters a chance to strengthen their faith in God and prepare themselves for their future. We maintain complete confidentiality when receiv-ing and distributing financial aid from our Help-A-Student Program. Parents willing to support the stan-dards and requirements of the school, and participate in parish and school projects and activities, will be helped to give their children the excellent academic and reli-gious education available in St. Charles Borromeo School. Won’t you please consider a gift today, perhaps in memory of a loved one, or in gratitude for the many blessings in your life. Your generosity is deeply appreci-ated.
