Schedule of Classes

Dear Emeritus Students and Community,

I know you’ll join me in celebrating the news that Senate Bill (SB) 173 has been held back by the Assembly Higher Education Committee for this year, so we anticipate no change in the current funding for Emeritus Institute courses. Our District and College took an active role in opposing the bill, including meeting with elected officials, garnering additional support from regional and national organizations in opposing the bill, and sending our Emeritus Institute Director to Sacramento to participate in the hearings on August 14, 2013. Many of you also supported the efforts to halt this legislation by writing letters and contacting elected officials, and your efforts have made a significant impact.

As you are aware, SB 173 called for the defunding of older adult courses offered through California Community Colleges, raising concerns about the future of Saddleback College’s Emeritus Institute and its classes. I want to be clear: The Emeritus Institute is a cherished program both at Saddleback College and in our District, and by the community that we serve. Please rest assured that there are not, and never have been, any plans to discontinue the Emeritus Institute at Saddleback College.

The Legislature continues to explore funding changes in education that might necessitate offering Emeritus Institute classes through a different funding model. Classes in the Emeritus Institute are currently funded by the State as noncredit education. If passed as currently written, SB 173 would, beginning July 1, 2015, remove authorization for funding noncredit community college courses in the categories of parenting, older adults, home economics, and health and safety education.

If the State eliminates funding for Emeritus Institute classes, we may find it necessary to offer fee based classes in their place to cover the cost of instruction. Should this happen we will make every attempt to offer these classes at the lowest fees possible for our older adult students. The Emeritus Institute is extremely fortunate to have received a very sizable and growing endowment from the Dorothy Marie Lowry Trust that will permit us to offer classes with minimal fees and offer scholarships to senior students who are unable to afford them.

While funding for the Emeritus Institute is assured through the 2014-15 academic year, we do not know if regulatory changes will provide for continued funding of this valuable program that touches and serves so many individuals. With or without State funding, Saddleback College will continue to offer these valuable classes to our older adult population, whatever the format. I hope this letter will reassure all of you that the

Saddleback College Emeritus Institute is here to stay and that we will continue to work hard to serve our Emeritus students.

Sincerely,

Tod A. Burnett, Ed.D. President, Saddleback College

Melinda Smith has been teaching Fashion classes for Older Adults in Saddleback College’s Emeritus Institute since 1999. Her interest in clothing and wearable arts started when she learned to sew at the young age of 9. Melinda went on to win state and national awards for her clothing construction. She has a passion for teaching and has been able to share this with students for the past 25 years.

Melinda’s classes are some of the fastest filling in the Emeritus Institute, with a long list of students eagerly trying to enroll. Students describe her as academically challenging, caring, detail oriented, encouraging, engaging, innovative, inspirational, organized, patient, pleasant, extremely knowledgeable and always prepared. Melinda creates a warm and supportive classroom atmosphere, and she is focused on helping students succeed. Students report leaving her classes with increased creativity and self-esteem, and encouraged to expand their skills. “The creative juices are constantly flowing in this class thanks to Melinda inspiring us to look at the world in a new way,“ says student Arlene Mukamal.

Founded in 1976, the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was established to create lifelong learning opportunities, primarily for the older adult. A dynamic and wide array of course offerings, expert instructors truly experienced in their field, and a variety of classes located in the community have made the Emeritus Institute extremely popular, and one of the fastest growing programs at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo throughout the years. As the generations of burgeoning baby boomers become senior citizens, the Emeritus Institute continues to change and offer classes that stimulate intellectual, physical, and creative expression for South Orange County residents.

There are over 170 Emeritus classes offered through the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute that provide lifelong learning experiences in more than 30 different disciplines. These high- quality academic classes are state-approved and available on a non-credit basis. Classes cover a wide range of interests, from accounting, art, crafts, biology, clothing and textiles, English writing and literature, gerontology, health, history, music, photography, physical fitness, Spanish, special services, and theatre. Classes are held in more than 25 off-campus sites from San Clemente in the south to Lake Forest and Laguna Woods to the north, including senior centers, churches, libraries, and community centers.

An integral part of Saddleback College and its educational vision, the Emeritus Institute is a leader in providing challenging and rewarding courses designed for the older adult to accommodate the lifelong learning needs of our community members.

We invite you to be a part of the excitement of lifelong learning. Join the growing number of active adults taking part in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute.

The Emeritus Advisory Board is made up of adult volunteers and professional representatives from community agencies serving the adult population. By becoming involved as a volunteer, you can make a difference in your life and in the educational standards of your community.

For more information on this exciting program, call the Emeritus Institute at (949) 582-4835.
