ON THE MATThe top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team hosts Oregon State on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CT) at Carver-Hawk-eye Arena.

IOWA VS. OREGON STATE Iowa and Oregon State are mee ng for the eighth me in a series that dates back to 1973. Oregon State won the fi rst mee ng in 1973, 23-11, in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have since won the last six, including a 22-14 win when the teams last met in 2012 (Ames, Iowa, na onal duals). Oregon State is making its fi rst trip to Iowa City since 1981, a 43-0 Hawkeye victory.

WINNING STREAKIowa has won 19 straight overall and 19 straight at Carv-er-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes’ 19-dual winning streak is the longest ac ve streak in the country. Iowa’s 19-dual winning streak at Carver-Hawkeye Are-na is its longest since winning 38 straight from 2008-12. The Hawkeyes’ last loss at Carver-Hawkeye Arena was Jan. 27, 2018 (19-17 versus No. 7 Michigan). Iowa has won 23 consecu ve Big Ten duals, its longest conference streak since winning 24 straight from 2014-17.

MARINELLI CLIMBS TO NO. 1Senior Alex Marinelli debuted at No. 2 in the preseason polls but climbed to the top spot at 165 when defending champion Shane Griffi th was defeated 3-2 last weekend. Marinelli has entered the NCAA Championships as the No. 1 seeded wrestler in each of the last three years. He has a 78-10 career record, including a 39-1 record in du-als and a 13-0 record in nonconference duals. He is 20-1 all- me at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

CARVER HAWKEYE ARENA DEBUTRedshirt freshman Jesse Ybarra won by forfeit in what was scheduled to be his Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut Nov. 19. Ybarra improved to 4-0 with the win. He went 3-0 en route to the 125-pound Luther Open tle on Nov. 13.

SIEBRECHT DOMINATES IN DUAL DEBUTSophomore Cobe Siebrecht dominated Josh Breeding of Princeton on Nov. 19 in his varsity debut. Siebrecht opened the scoring with a takedown in the opening min-ute and used three four-point lts to extend his lead to 14-0. He closed his fi rst career varsity match with a take-down at the 2:25 mark. Siebrecht, a na ve of Lisbon, Iowa, was wrestling in front of the hometown Carver crowd for the fi rst me. He appeared in an “extra match” at Carver in 2021 when fans were not permi ed to a end.

OLYMPIC, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BLOODLINESJunior Nelson Brands and freshman Wya Henson have Olympic bloodlines. Nelson’s father, Terry, was an Olym-pic bronze medalist in 2000. His uncle, Tom, won Olympic gold in 1996. Terry was a World Champion in 1993 and 1995. Tom won a World Championship in 1993. Freshman Wya Henson is the son of Olympic silver medalist and World Champion Sammie Henson. Sam-mie was a teammate of Terry Brands on the 2000 United States Olympic team. He won an Olympic silver medal in 2000 and a World Championship in 1998.

SCHRIEVER, HENSON WIN LINDENWOOD TITLESRedshirt freshman Cullan Schriever and freshman Wya Henson won tles Nov. 27 at the 2021 Lindenwood Open. Schriever went 3-0 with a technical fall and a pin to win the 133-pound Gold Division. Henson won twice by fall and added a major decision to win the 141-pound Black Divi-sion. The gold medal was his second in as many weeks. Hen-son won the freshman division at the Luther Open on Nov. 13. Freshman Sebas an Robles went 4-1 at 157 pounds to place third in the Black Division.

8 HAWKEYES WIN TITLES AT LUTHER OPENThe University of Iowa wrestling program opened the 2021-22 season winning eight tles Nov. 13 at the Luther Open. Twenty-one Hawkeyes combined for 19 falls, 45 bonus-point wins and a 62-11 record. Seven Iowa wrestlers won championships in the Elite Di-vision, including Jesse Ybarra (125), Aus n DeSanto (133), Jaydin Eierman (141), Cobe Siebrecht (149), Kaleb Young (157), Alex Marinelli (165) and Zach Glazier (197). Iowa was 53-6 in the Elite Division with four of those losses against fellow Hawkeyes, including two in the fi nals. DeSanto defeated Cullan Schriever, 8-4, in the 133-pound fi -nals and Marinelli was a 3-2 winner against Patrick Kennedy in the 165-pound fi nals. Eierman, Young, Joe Kelly and Jacob Warner each record a pair of pins. Eierman pinned both of his opponents before winning by medical forfeit in the 141-pound fi nals. Young was 4-0 with two falls, one technical fall and one major de-cision at 157. Kelly placed third at 165 with a pair of falls and Warner pinned his fi rst two opponents and won a third match by major decision before medically forfei ng in the fi nals at 197. True freshman Wya Henson won the 141-pound Silver/Freshman division, rolling up three technical falls and a ma-jor in the fi nals.

CASSIOPPI WINS GOLD AT U23 WORLDSJunior Tony Cassioppi pinned Azamat Khosonov of Greece on Nov. 7 to win the 125 kg gold medal at the 2021 U23 World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Cassioppi built a 13-0 lead before securing the fall with 16 seconds le in the fi rst period. He is the United States’ second U23 World champion this year. Emily Shilson took home gold for the United States at 50 kg in women’s free-style Cassioppi, a two- me freestyle Pan-American champion and two- me Hawkeye All-American, won three matches on Saturday to advance to the fi nals. In his four tournament wins, he won two matches by fall and outscored his four opponents, 38-8.

A LOOK BACK ON THE MATThe Hawkeyes fi nished the 2020-21 season as Big Ten and NCAA champions. The conference tle is the 37th in pro-gram history and the na onal tle is the 24th in program history. Iowa crowned one NCAA individual champion, seven All-Americans, four Big Ten individual champions and 13 academic All-Big Ten honorees. The Hawkeyes were 5-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten, sharing the regular season conference tle with Penn State.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPSThe top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won the 2021 NCAA Championships on March 20 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. Iowa scored 129 points, 15.5 clear of second-place Penn State. The team tle is the 24th in program history and the fi rst since 2010. The Hawkeyes qualifi ed 10 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Those wrestlers combined for a 38-13 overall record with 21 bonus-point wins, good for 27 bonus points. Iowa crowned seven All-Americans, more than any other team. Senior Spencer Lee won the 125-pound championship for the third me in his career. Seniors Jaydin Eierman (141) and Michael Kemerer (174) reached the fi nals for the fi rst me in their careers, placing runner-up at 141 and 174, re-spec vely. Aus n DeSanto (133), Kaleb Young (157) and Jacob Warner (197) earned All-America honors for the third me in their careers. Tony Cassioppi earned his second career All-America honor at 285. The Hawkeyes have won a team trophy in 12 of the last 13 na onal tournaments.

IOWA ALL AMERICANSIowa returns 10 All-Americans to its lineup in 2021-22. They include four- mers Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman and Mi-chael Kemerer; three- mers Aus n DeSanto, Kaleb Young, Alex Marinelli and Jacob Warner; two- mer Tony Cassioppi; and one- mers Max Murin and Abe Assad. Seven Hawkeye wrestlers earned All-America honors at the 2021 NCAA Championships, more than any other school. Iowa’s 2021 All-Americans included Spencer Lee (125), Aus n DeSanto (133), Jaydin Eierman (141), Kaleb Young (157), Michael Kemerer (174), Jacob Warner (197) and Tony Cassioppi (285). The seven All-Americans represent Iowa’s highest total since 2010, and fi ve Hawkeyes place third or be er for the fi rst me since 2010.

The Hawkeyes’ seven 2021 All-Americans were a combined 33-8 with nine major decisions, six technical falls and three pins at the NCAA tournament. The All-Americans had a combined season record of 83-15. Iowa has had at least fi ve All-Americans in eight straight seasons and 13 mes in head coach Tom Brands’ 15 seasons.

WECOME TO CARVER HAWKEYE ARENAThe University of Iowa wrestling program has sold out of season ckets for the fi rst me in program history. The 2021-22 season marks a return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for fans that were not allowed to a end last season due to COVID restric ons. Iowa led the na on in a endance for the 14th consecu ve season in 2019-20, se ng an NCAA average a endance record of 12,568 fans in seven home dates. Offi cial a endance records were not kept in 2020-21. The 2019-20 season marked the 12th straight that Iowa averaged more than 8,000 fans. It also marked the fi rst me in NCAA history that a program put more than 10,000 fans in the building for every home dual.

SPENCER LEE TARGETS FOURTH TITLESenior Spencer Lee won the 125-pound NCAA Championship, becoming the seventh three- me na onal champion in program history and pu ng an exclama on point on the Hawkeyes’ 2021 NCAA team tle. Lee was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year and won the Dan Hodge Trophy for the second straight season. Lee is the seventh three- me NCAA champion in program history, joining the ranks of Ed Banach (1981, 81, 83), Barry Davis (1982, 83, 85), Jim Zalesky (1982-84), Tom Brands (1990-92), Lincoln McIlravy (1993, 94, 97) and Joe Williams (1996-98). Tom BrandsHead Coach University of Iowa, 1992

Five-time Big Ten and three-time NWCA Coach of the Year Tom Brands enters his 16th season as head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa in 2021-22. A 1996 Olympic gold med-alist and member of wrestling’s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawk-eye wrestler was a four-time All-American and

three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 237-23-1 (.909) over-all and 113-10 (.917) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa. He has a 254-43-1 (.852) career mark and a 115-12 (.905) record at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. In 15-plus seasons as Iowa’s head coach, Brands has led the Hawkeyes to four NCAA and six Big Ten team titles, crowning 13 NCAA champions, 23 Big Ten champions and 89 All-Americans. Iowa has had 142 Academic All-Big Ten recipients, including a school-record 17 in 2019-20. The Hawkeyes have quali-fi ed 138 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last 15 years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2020 and 2021. Iowa has won or shared the Big Ten regular season title 12 times in Brands’ 15 seasons. The program set the national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 42,287 when No. 3 Iowa defeated top-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, on Nov. 14, 2015 at the Grapple on the Gridiron at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa has led the nation in attendance every year since Brands became head coach in 2006-07, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 12,568 in 2019-20. Brands has been named NWCA National Coach of the Year three times. He was fi rst honored in 2008 after leading the Hawkeyes to their fi rst NCAA team title since 2000. He was recognized in 2020 when the top-ranked Hawkeyes won Big Ten regular season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Championships as the favorite to win the team title. The tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He most recently won the award in 2021 when Iowa won Big Ten and NCAA team titles.

Brands was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2020 and 2021. He is the only coach in program history to earn the award fi ve times. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his fi rst season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record fi ve wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten team titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wres-tling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens, and in 2016 he was named a volunteer coach of the United States Olympic team in Rio. Brands also served as assistant coach for the U.S. Freestyle World Teams in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He was named Freestyle Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling in 2002 and 2003. He has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, Georgia. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Cham-pionships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler, and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wrestling’s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three-time Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2 includes an unde-feated season in 1991 (45-0). The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. degree in physical education from Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three adult children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
