    Through the generosity and commitment of the Bernard Osher Foundation, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU (OLLI at ASU) was established in 2004.

    Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes across the nation are meeting the needs

    of adult learners who want to learn simply for the joy of learning. There are over 115 OLLIs nationwide that share resources and programming ideas. OLLI at ASU programs currently reaches over 1,000 students a year with more than 100 types of offerings.

    Classes are taught by ASU faculty both current and emeritus and community scholars and experts. The scholars bring a lifetime of knowledge to their classes and lectures. Some teach topics related to their career; for others, its an opportunity to share their passion about a particular subject.

    introduction to Creative Writing

    Instructor: Paul Novak, Del Webb Scholar2 sessions: Thursdays, Nov. 6, 20 8:30 10:30 amCost $18

    This class is designed to introduce the beginning writer to fiction and non-fiction writing. In a pressure-free environment, students will begin to write and get an overview of the creative writing process. Students will learn a solid formulaic approach which ensures that all his or her writing contains seven building blocks. The instructor will also discuss good writing habits and the three-act story structure. Instructor feedback is available if the student desires.

    Writing a Memoir

    Instructor: Paul Novak, Del Webb Scholar2 sessions: Thursdays, Dec. 4, 11 8:30 10:30 amCost $18

    In a non-critical environment, the instructor discusses how to write a personal memoir, or the memoir of a family member or a friend. This new two-session course touches on writing a family history (not within a genealogical perspective) and provides ample time to answer questions and work one-on-one with the instructor, if a student wishes.

    Alaska beyond the Cruise

    Instructor: Dr. Sandy Tracy, Del Webb Scholar1 sessions: Monday, Dec. 8 11:00 am 12:30 pmCost: $9

    Dr. Tracy, a longtime resident of Alaska and an avid traveler to the interior regions of the state, will discuss aspects of Alaskan life that tourists visiting our nations largest state never see or experience from the deck of a cruise ship or during a brief tour along the Alaskan coast.

    Our Travels Through Peru

    What You May Not Know About Diplomacy and Diplomats

    If you have read one or more novels about life in the American diplomatic and consular corps overseas, you have been misinformed. In this course, a retired senior American diplomat will describe the functions and circumstances of the U.S. Foreign Service, and how you might, one day, find yourself dealing with it.

    Constitutional Roles of the United States President and Vice President

    This lecture dispels the various myths associated with the roles of the President and Vice President of the United States. It examines Article II of the U.S. Constitution to help us understand how and why the role of the president has transitioned into its current position we know today.

  • Kentucky Senators, Rand Paul and Henry Clay: Congressional Compromise

    Lecturer: Dr. George Jeffers, ASU Faculty (retired)1 session: Thursday, Dec. 4 11:00 am 12:30 pmCost $9

    Prior to the Civil War, Henry Clay brought the U.S. Congress together to make the compromises the U.S. needed to preserve the federal union. Rand Paul is one of Kentuckys present day Senators. As part of this class, students will view his first Senate speech in which he argues todays Congress must understand both sides of the issues that currently divide them, rather than simply seeking their resolution through compromises that may fail to understand the real essence of each issue. Class members will also discuss Pauls approach to compromise and how it differs from Clays and whether or not Clays or Pauls approach is most relevant to the work of our Congress today.

    The Right to Personal Privacy and the Governments Need to Protect?

    Robert Blendu, a longtime member and legislative leader of both the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate, shares his views concerning an individuals right to privacy, as it relates to the Federal goverments need to protect America from attack by terrorists.

    Op Ed Wednesdays

    Op Ed Wednesdays is a discussion forum for political, social, and economic issues. Prior to each class meeting, class members are asked to read the Op Ed section of their favorite newspaper or news magazine and select an article (make copies for the class) that will produce a lively class discussion. Students will be asked to explain why he or she chose that article. The instructors will facilitate all discussions.

    Where Do You Come From? Using Research Strategies for Getting Results

    Instructor: Tom Ryan, Del Webb Scholar3 sessions: Mondays, Nov. 10, 17, Dec. 8 3:30 5:00 pmCost $27

    This course is for anyone who is serious about researching his or her family history. The instructor will guide students using proven research techniques applied to specific Internet sites, such as FamilySearch.org, EllisIsland.org, Heritage Quest, accessed through MCLDAAZ.org, as well as Ancestry.com, etc. More and more, historical genealogical records are being digitized and put on the Internet. Learn how to access these records and put together a research plan of action. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops to each class, but a few computers are available in the Sun Devil Room for those without laptops.

  • Southwest Desert Gardening Preparing Your Trees and Shrubs for Winter

    Lecturer: Nick Vigna III, ASU Volunteer Instructor1 session: Monday, Nov. 3 1:00 2:30 pmCost: $9

    Mr. Vigna discusses the planting, care and techniques you might use to help your plants survive freeze

    conditions and revive their growth in the spring. He will also explain the proper soil prepa-ration, required watering and fertilization requirements for an Arizona winter, as well as how to prevent damage or loss from freeze.

    Arizonas income Tax and its Relationship to Your Federal Return

    Instructor: Gail Reese, Festival Community Scholar2 sessions: Tuesdays, Nov. 11, 18 3:00 4:30 pmCost: $18

    Designed to help new Arizona residents, this class answers questions about Arizona personal income taxation. It addresses the concept of tax home and how this aspect of income taxation may affect part-time Arizona residents, as well as Festival homeowners who might have multi-state tax filing requirements. The class also focuses on the basics of federal income taxation, and highlights how Arizona tax law differs from various federal provisions. It will also cover the major Arizona income tax credits, as well as providing an overview of documents necessary to complete both a basic U.S. and Arizona income tax return.

    Our Water Today and Tomorrow

    Water is essential to our lives, especially in Arizoas Sonoran Desert. Join this presentation moderated by Gail Reese and presented by members of the City of Buckeye Water Department who will explain how the City supplies our water today and protects it for tomorrow.

    These sessions provide an overview of present financial market trends and strategies to help investors cope with and potentially succeed within this environment. The importance of asset allocation and diversification are discussed; however, this strategy does not guaran-tee a profit or protect a persons account from losses.

    Arizona Wills, Trusts, Estates and Disabilities

    An overview of Arizona law regarding asset ownership, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, making medical decisions, and management of assets when a person is disabled. Living wills, medical powers of attorney and do not resuscitate orders will be discussed. Additionally, the instructor will review Arizona laws protect-ing assets if a spouse is placed in a nursing home as well as protecting individuals and estates from creditors.

    Del Webb The Early Years and the New York Yankees

    Lecturer: Paul Novak, Del Webb Scholar 1 session: Tuesday, Nov. 11 9:00 10:30 amCost $9

    We will learn about Del Webbs unique American story and focus on his tenure as co-owner of the New York Yankees. Creator of the Sun Cities, there is much more to the legend and myths about this man. We will explore his image and his reputation. His construction company built Luke Air Force Base, Thunderbird Field, Anaheim Stadium and Madison Square Garden, to name a few.

  • Del Webb and the Arizona Years

    Lecturer: Paul Novak, Del Webb Scholar 1 session: Tuesday, Nov. 18 9:00 10:30 amCost $9

    Join this session and learn about the creation of the Sun City concept and its implementation. Del Webb was a friend and golfing partner of the rich and famous. He built several Las Vegas casinos, including Bugsy Siegels infamous Flamingo. One of the richest men in America, he left a deep philanthropic mark on Arizona.

    Arizona Readers Group

    Every Fall the Arizona Readers Group reads two books which relate to Arizona history, the contributions of famous Arizonans or focus on a fictionalized Arizonian theme. Our first reading selection is Lisa Michaels Grand Ambition. The second book will be determined during the first session of the course.

    Frank Lloyd Wright

    Lecturer: Allen Reamer, ASU Faculty Associate 1 session: Monday, Dec. 15 9:00 10:30 amCost $9

    While in college, Frank Lloyd Wright worked for an architect who was constructing a chapel. This experience convinced Wright to work with the famed architect, Louis Sullivan. When asked why he became an architect, Wright replied because architecture is the mother of all Art!. During his career, this world-famous architect designed in three architectural styles: Victorian, Prairie, and Usonia and indicated he took this path to create a Democratic American Architec-ture. This course examines his life and architecture with an emphasis on his work in the Phoenix area.

    Southwest Art and Architecture

    Instructor: Allen Reamer, ASU Faculty Associate4 sessions: Mondays, Nov. 3, 10, 17, Dec. 8 9:00 10:30 amCost: $36

    The southwest has a rich artistic culture. This course begins with the art and architecture of the Prehistoric Southwest cultures. Many of these sites are close to where we are today. It continues with a look into the art and architecture of the Southwests Native Ameri-cans. If time permits, we will review the work of Rocky Mountain painters and other Western artists.

  • buffalo Soldiers

    Lecturer: Dr. Curtis Gooden, Del Webb Scholar 1 session: Monday, Nov. 10 11:00 am 12:30 pmCost: $9

    Following the Civil War, the U.S. 10th Cavalry, comprised of black troopers and commanded by white officers, served to protect the settlers in New Mexico and Arizona who came to farm, ranch and work in the mines. This lecture details some of the exploits of these gallant soldiers.

    A New Mexico Story: Mescaleros, The Crosses, Mesilla, and Fort Selden

    Lecturer: Dr. Sandra Tracy, Del Webb Scholar1 session: Thursday, Nov. 13 11:00 12:30 pmCost $9

    Fort Selden is a U.S. national park, a short drive north of Las Cruces, N.M. It was built to defend the Mesilla Valley from the Mescalero Apache, who frequently raided this lush farmland and its towns of Las Cruces and Mesilla, which have played important roles in the history of our country. Take this course and visit this area. Have dinner in the picturesque Old Mesilla Square and spend a night among the Mescalero in their world-class resort and casino high above the valley which these warriors once raided, only to be thwarted by Fort Seldens buffalo soldiers.

    Astronomy i

    Instructor: Joseph Aibinder, Festival Community Scholar 4 sessions: Tuesdays, Nov. 11, 18, Dec. 2, 9 1:00 am 2:30 pmCost: $36

    The instructor will discuss the works of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Einstein, star evolution, and the Big Bang using computer-stored images, images from space, ground-based instruments like the Hubble and Microsoft Worldwide Telescope, and various university-based resources.

    An introduction to iPhones and iPads

    Instructor: Barbara Waggoner, Del Webb Scholar 2 sessions: Wednesdays, Dec. 3, 10 1:00 2:30 pmCost: $18

    As rollouts of new hand-held computing devices increase, the public is faced with deciding whether to join the iPhone revolution or continue using familiar laptops or cellphones. This course provides the basic skills iPhone and iPad owners need to increase their computing and communicating capacity.

    The Evolution of the Mental Health Profession from Freud to Eternity

    Instructor: Dr. Jerry Briskin, Festival Community Scholar 2 sessions: Fridays, Dec. 5, 12 11:00 am 12:30 pm Cost: $18Class Size Limit: 15 Students

    Although mental health problems have likely existed since the beginning of time, prior to Freud in the late 19th century, psychiatry was virtually non-existent. Dr. Briskin discusses various theories and practices which address causation, classification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental disorders, as they have evolved from the Victorian era to our present society. To ensure adequate class time for discussion, this course is limited to 15 students.

    Need to find peace and calm before the hectic holiday season? In this class, students will learn five basic steps for meditation, the benefits of meditation, and several different ways to meditate. Each class will be part interactive lecture and part experiential. Take what you learn, apply it to your daily life, and enjoy a fantastic, peaceful holiday and beyond!

    Designed for students who have taken A Taste of Meditation and wish to deepen their understanding and practice of meditation, this class will be both educational and experiential. It takes up where A Taste of Meditation left off and provides advanced mediation techniques.

    Maximize Your Fitness

    Learn about the three components of exercise cardiovascular, strength and flexibility including their benefits and how to perform each one for maximum results. With guidance, youll learn to design a safe and effective exercise program that will meet your fitness goals.

  • Joseph Aibinder, M.S., is Sun City Festival resident and community scholar who served as a Connecticut high school science teacher, a College Advanced Placement instructor, an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut and as a NASA Endeavor Teaching Fellow.

    Robert Blendu is an ASU Volunteer Instructor, a former member and leader of both Houses of the Arizona legislature and served as the majority leader of its House of Representatives and as President Pro Tempore of its Senate.

    Jerry Briskin, Ph.D., J.D., is a Sun City Festival resident and community scholar who practiced clinical psychology for 60 years in the military, for the V.A., and was on staff of several hospitals. He is also a member of the Michigan Bar Association and was an adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Detroit.

    Doug Chatem, MBA, is a Sun City Festival resident and community scholar who has over 40 years of experience with information systems engineering and management. Dougs avocations include over 20 years of leading/teaching boys and adults for the Boy Scouts.

    Lewis Davis, BBA is an ASU Volunteer Instructor who graduated from ASUs prestigious Carey School of Business and is a financial advisor for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Peoria, AZ.

    David Dobrusin, B.S., CPA, is an ASU Volunteer Instructor who graduated from the nationally respected Marshall School of Business at U.S.C. and practices public accounting in Sun City, AZ.

    Chuck Eier, M.S., is the Director of Sun City Festivals Fitness and Wellness Program. He holds an advanced degree in exercise science from Purdue University and has worked in the fitness industry for more than 15 years. He is a veteran of more than 8 marathons and over 40 triathlons.

    Jean-Marie Givens-Myers, B.A., HTCP/ICRHT, is a Sun City Festival resident and community scholar. She is a former adjunct instructor for the Institute of Health and Healing in Newport News, VA. She is a certified practitioner in Healing Touch Programs.

    Curtis L. Gooden, Ph.D., is a Sun City Festival resident and a Del Webb Scholar. He taught mathematics at both the high school and college levels, served as a department chairperson and dean of instruction in the Cleveland Community College System.

    John Hall, B.A., M.A., DHL, is a retired U.S. senior diplomat who has served in various postings all over the world during his State Department career. After retiring to Arizona, he has become a respected ASU Volunteer Instructor.

    Betty Hamilton is a resident of both Vancouver B.C. and Sun City Festival, and a Sun City Festival community scholar. She taught in the Canadian public schools and served as Director of Instruction for an award winning Sylvan Learning Center. Since retirement, she and her husband, John, have traveled extensively visiting over 70 countries.

    John Hamilton, BASc, is a resident of Vancouver, B.C., a Sun City Festival resident and community scholar. His 37 year career included work as a geophysicist, chief mine geologist, and manager of exploration and acquisition evaluations, traveling to all the continents except Antarctica. John served as the past president of the Geological Institute of Canada.

    Robert F. Jeckel, J.D., is an ASU Volunteer Instructor who has practiced law in Sun City for over 40 years and taught Arizona law for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at ASU, the ASU Extended campus and the Maricopa Community Colleges.

  • Dr. George Jeffers, B.A. M.S. Ed.D., is a former associate professor at New Mexico State University and a retired associate clinical professor at ASU. He also served as off-campus program director for NMSUs Graduate School of Education and at ASU, as a department leader. Prior to working at the university level, he served as a school superintendent in both New York and California, where he was appointed a state commissioner to review failing schools. The U.S. Department of Labor also honored him for his successful work with Interest-Based Bargaining in the public sector.

    Paul Novak, M.S., is a Sun City Festival resident, Del Webb scholar, and a former military instructor. He has a degree in journalism and is a published author. Paul has writte articles for many aerospace magazines, and his books and latest works, Mrs. President and Into Hostile Skies, are available at Amazon.com.

    Allen Reamer, B.A. MFA., is an ASU Faculty Associate who represents the fifth generation of a family of artists. He has completed 60 additional graduate credits in art history and education and has taught a variety of studio art and art history courses for 33 years before coming to Arizona. He has also served as the president of the District of Columbia Art Education Association and is a Cafritz Fellow in Fine Arts. The Gallery at 915 in Fredericksburg, VA represents Allens work. He also exhibits with the Arizona Neu Art Group.

    Gail Reese, CPA (retired), is a Sun City Festival resident and community scholar who spent her career in public accounting and government finance. Shes held various executive positions in New Mexico state government and recently served as the finance director for the City of Buckeye.

    Hugh Renfro is an ASU Volunteer Instructor, the former head of the Arabian Chevron Oil Company and executive producer of Arabia, 2010 IMAX film.

    Tom Ryan, B.S., is a Sun City Festival resident and Del Webb scholar who retired from the Rocky Mountain Region of the ISFA Forest Service. His passion for genealogy has inspired him to research his own and his wifes family histories. He now shares his 25 plus years of genealogy research with his fellow residents.

    Sandra Tracy, Ph.D., is a Sun City Festival resident and a Del Webb Scholar. She served as a school district administrator in Alaska, a faculty member and administrator at San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico and as a faculty member and Dean at Chapman College in California.

    Nick Vigna III, B.A., is West Valley area manager for Four Peaks Landscape Management Inc. and an ASU Volunteer Instructor who has significant knowledge of the planting, growing and maintenance of the various types of trees, plants, flowers and shrubs that grow best in the Sun City Festival area.

    Barbara Waggoner-Feebeck is a Sun City Festival resident and a Del Webb Scholar. She is a retired law enforcement administrator who has directed various law enforcement-related technology programs and served as a staff trainer for computer-training programs in the Sheriffs Department in Portland, Oregon.

    Linda Wangner, B.A. M.A., is a Sun City Festival resident, a community scholar and a retired New York State high school teacher with 37 years of experience. Linda has developed a research interest in background stories related to various political events.
