A cultural service of

If there is one word that sums up Season Two of the Fraser Coast’s art, culture and performance scene in 2015 then that word is ’talent’. This season brings talent in abundance to our theatre and galleries. There are leading international and national performances and exhibitions, but the real spotlight falls on our home grown talent.

The opportunity to witness the wonderful skills, flair and dedication of the region’s gifted performers starts with the highly regarded Maryborough Eisteddfod in August. Hundreds compete in this long running performance arts competition, which dates back to the start of last century.

It is also dance extravaganza time! Thousands of young dance students will take to the Brolga stage to entertain audiences as the region’s dance schools present their eagerly awaited annual concerts.

Many new stars were unearthed in Street Life’s inaugural Buskers competition, so look out for them in coming months as they perform at events and gigs across the region.

The incredible depths of the Fraser Coast’s visual art community will be showcased at the Hervey Bay Art Society’s 32nd annual competition, which has attracted over 300 entries from across Australia.

The second half of 2015 is also a time for discovery. Take a Backyard Adventure with SciTech – an exciting new travelling exhibition that focuses on the hidden world of science; or discover the natural wonders of our region at the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere.

New displays opening at the Portside Museums bring a fresh perspective to our impressive history, while Maryborough Open House offers a chance for a rare look inside of some of the region’s most significant and interesting buildings and explore beautiful private heritage homes and gardens.

Once again we invite you to make Fraser Coast Scene your guide as you embrace and celebrate our inspirational art and culture.

Artist profile Brandon WoodsFrom electronic to hip hop, Brandon Woods’ music is an eclectic fusion of styles with a contemporary twist on classical violin. Brandon has been performing since he was 10 years old and released his debut EP Violectricity in May 2014. Now 17 years old, Bradon is passionate about bringing the violin into popular music.

“I love that the violin is an instrument you can do anything with. It can perform all genres of music, but is mostly thought of as a classical or country musical instrument.”

Brandon has performed all over the world and was selected to represent Team Australia in the World Championships of Performing Arts to be held in Los Angeles in July 2016. Brandon has his sights set on releasing an album and embarking on an Australian tour.

Growing up in the Fraser Coast, Brandon loves showcasing his unique style of music.

I love seeing my audiences dancing and really getting into it when they watch me perform. When I perform outside of the region, I always feel proud to be representing the Fraser Coast.

East Coast Encounter is a multi-arts initiative involving Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, writers and songwriters to re-imagine the encounter by Lt James Cookand his crew with Aboriginal people in 1770.

Cook’s voyage along the Australian east coast has become central to national historical narratives.

The exhibition of paintings, photographs, videos and three dimensional works re-envisages this seminal journey by imaginatively exploring moments of contact between two world views during these encounters.

Monte Lupo Peter Hughes - An Artist’s LifeAn exhibition of self-portraits which includes images of the artist in daily life. Influenced by news and current affairs, the people around him, his art and inspirations, Peter’s strong personality translates to bold works in a naive and colourful style.

Natural Selection - Marilyn MurrayThe landscape of Childers and the view from the artist’s back verandah provided the inspiration for this exhibition of art works.

Acretion - Ann BrownThe alchemy of making marks and then exploring processes that create new marks reminiscent of the cycles of decay and renewal. The processes used include the use of eco-dying on silk and paper, printmaking and cold wax techniques.

Pressing Matters - Maryborough PrintmakersA collection of works from the Maryborough Printmakers. The artworks cover a wide range of techniques and styles ranging from wood engraving, etching, linocut, monoprints and silkscreen. The group have been operating from the space since 2014 and work on a regular basis, offering workshops from beginners to advanced.

The Three P’s - Tom Mc Namara, Audrey Reece and Barry FennellAn exhibition by three visual artists who enjoy painting socially with the Merry River Group. The group formed as part of the Maryborough Art Society in the late 90s and meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas and techniques.

Embellishments - Valerie McIntoshIn the late nineteenth century, facades of buildings in Maryborough were designed to reflect importance, wealth and prestige, embellished with finials, mouldings, classical motifs and other decorative architectural devices. Artist Valerie McIntosh has selected a number of finials as subjects for drawings in conté crayon and charcoal. Small encaustic works also illustrate other architectural features of local buildings.

Battlefield - Haley George Groves and Susie Lewis Love is a battlefield and only love can break a heart with it’s trials and tribulations, risks and rewards. This series of works is about fighting for love even when it’s wrong, wondering why love lingers long after the battle is over and knowing only love can make it new again.

Relive a fascinating colonial past and discover glorious heritage architecture at the Portside Heritage Gateway, Maryborough’s famous original port district.

From humble beginnings as a wool port in 1847, by the turn of the century Maryborough was a thriving centre of commerce and industry and one of Australia’s largest immigration ports.

More than 22,000 free settlers took their first steps on Australian soil here after months at sea. Wharves stretched for miles along the river bank as early industries flourished, along with brothels, bars and banks.

Now more stories from this remarkable era have been brought to life in new exhibits and refurbishments at the Customs House Interpretive Centre and Bond Store Museum.
