“Applause begets applause in the theatre, as laughter begets laughter and tears beget tears.”

—Clayton Hamilton, Theory of the Theatre

What does it mean to be community theatre? It means you. Each role supports another—and your role as audience is no different! Our production staff, actors, and volunteers have had a great time working hard to take these shows from page to stage. The final step is inviting you, our audience, into the world we’ve created just for you.

This season, we present you with a slate of performances that bring laughter and tears, joy and sadness—and all things in between. We take you from the set of a bibli-cal epic to an English flat to a spelling competition to the Warsaw ghetto to magical woods and, finally, to a Pennsylvanian estate where nothing short of hilarity can ensue.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure—sit back, relax, and enjoy the world we’ve created for you.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee reveals the exciting and stressful world of competitive spelling. The music and lyrics written by William Finn and the book writ-ten by Rachel Sheinkin are based on the improvisational play C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E. Finn and Sheinkin incorporated the improvisational aspect of the play into their musi-cal through the use of audience participation. Six spellers and three adults are joined by four audience volunteers who act as spellers. For this production, I have adapted the play by adding two additional spellers in place of volunteers. The play lends itself to adaptations, so we have all worked to adjust it to the unique space at the Boal Barn.

Spelling Bee is a piece that is accessible on many levels. In this production, I have tried to celebrate one theme in particular: awkwardness. I have asked my designers and actors to recall their experience as a middle school student. With this theme in mind and a clear sense of character, the actors have moved beyond the script, improvising and adlibbing. For this reason, you will experience a different show depending upon the night and where you are seated. It has been a wonderful experience bringing this show to life. I am very grateful for my hardworking and creative cast and crew. Enjoy the show.

ON STAGE TONIGHT ANTHONY SPINA (Leaf Coneybear) feels supersonic mak-ing his Boal Barn debut in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! From Levittown, PA, he’s been singing and acting since he can

remember and studies English at Penn State—which means he actually DOES love words and spelling. Actually, he wants to share some of his favorite words with you: indefatigable, cynosure, mellifluous, detritus, nepenthe, paroxysm, nacreous, conniption...well, the list is interminable. Anthony is inexpressibly grateful to the entire cast and crew for making this a stellar sum-mer he’ll always hold dear. Leaf Coneybear is a joy to play, and he hopes that the audience shares his glee and enjoys the show!

KEN WOZETEK (William Barfée) is proud to be returning to the SCCT stage to work with such a fine cast and staff. Some past credits include: Dave in The Full Monty, Roger in Grease, and Mr. Bumble in

ARTISTIC STAFF Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for the theatre. The Farm initially designates a two-week intensive period in which to discover, develop, and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include “Super” (at Atlantic Theatre Studios), “Why I Hate Florida” (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E” (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based. The character and original dialogue of “Beth Marguiles,” “Vice President Douglas Panch,” “Mr. Barfee,” and “Logan Schwarzengrubenierre” were cre-ated by Rebecca Feldman, Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg, respectively.

DANIEL CUOMO (Master Carpenter) is in his first season with SCCT and will be working on the remaining shows this summer as well. He is a sopho-more majoring in Scenic Design at the University of

EVA HEPPELMANN (Director) was born American but is British by heart. She has performed in many shows at the Boal Barn, but The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee marks Eva’s directorial debut at the Boal Barn. She recently graduated from the University of Maryland. This has been a wonderful experience, and she would like to thank her cast and crew for all of their hard work.

THE FARM was founded in 2000 by Rebecca Feldman, Artistic Director. It is a collective of writers and performers, including Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and

ARTISTIC STAFF CLAUDIA DUVALL (Technical Director) is origi-nally from St. Louis, Missouri, and currently a Junior at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. She is a Scenic Design major with a minor in Automations. Past productions she has done include: Hair, The Rape of Lucretia, High School Musical, Of Mice and Men, The Marriage of Figaro, Our Town and Rent. Although this is her first season with SCCT at the Boal Barn, she has directed and performed in vari-ous dance and theatre projects on campus and man-aged high school productions across Pennsylvania. Most recently, she choreographed No Refund Theatre’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Tri-Valley High School’s SMILE. She would like to thank the actors for their persistent hard work and their growth in technical aspects, performance quality, and creative expression throughout the rehearsal pro-cess. It has truly been a pleasure for her to work with such a talented cast and production staff.

ERIK ANDERSON LARSON (Costume Designer) recently received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Theatre at Penn State University. During his time there, he designed the costumes for

Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He hails from Long Island, New York and has been working in technical theater for the past eight years.
