Scaw Metals to participate in global fair

SOUTH African steel and steel products manufacturer, Scaw Metals Group, will be taking part in wire

2014 in Düsseldorf, Germany from 7 to 11 April 2014.

This is one of the biggest trade fairs in the global wire and cable industry and will showcase all the

latest technologies and products available in the industry today.

More than 2 500 exhibitors will be on display and around 38 000 trade visitors and decision makers

from around the world will be expected to attend the fair at the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre.

“This is one of the most important events on the calendars of all major manufacturers in the global

wire and cable industry,” said George Katergarakis, Scaw Metals Group Executive Head of Sales and

Marketing.

“This year’s expo promises to be the biggest and most impressive one in its long and illustrious

history. We simply had to be a part of it. I believe that it is the perfect platform for us to showcase

our wire and strand products to the international market.”

Scaw’s Wire Rod Products Division is a leading manufacturer and distributor of specialised steel

ropes, wire, strand and chains used in both the local and international mining industry.

The last fair was held in 2012 and was the most successful exhibitions in its history with 1,300

exhibitors from 50 countries accommodating over 38 000 international visitors.

The range of offerings at wire 2014 will cover a wide spectrum, from wire manufacturing and

finishing equipment, mesh welding machinery, process engineering tools and auxiliary components

all the way through to input materials and speciality wires.

Innovative solutions from the cable, measurement, control and test engineering sectors round off

the portfolio, and specialised sectors such as logistics, conveying systems and packaging will also be

represented.

Scaw’s participation in wire 2014 is also in conjunction with the South African Department of Trade

and Industry (DTI), giving the global exhibition a true South African presence.

“We have a great relationship with the DTI, they are showing great support to South African

manufacturers. We believe that if manufacturers can work with the DTI the South African economy

will be stimulated and ensure that the local steel industry will grow into a global influencer,” said

Hannemann.

This is not the first time that Scaw has taken part in a trade fair. In February 2014, Scaw took part in

the Mining Indaba in order to bolster its African footprint.

“The mining Indaba was the perfect platform for us to show our high-quality products to other

players in both industries. We had great feedback from the visitors to our stand, this will be the first

of many indabas we will be participating in,” said Hannemann.

Throughout the year, Scaw will also be participating in the Chile Mining Expo in Chile, the Zaminex

Mining Show in Zambia, Wampex in Ghana, Africa Rail in Sandton and Electra Mining in Nasrec.

Forging company improves BBBEE rating

Steel and steel product manufacturer Scaw Metals Group has been awarded a Level 3 broad-based

black economic-empowerment (BBBEE) rating, emphasising its commitment to being a responsible

corporate in South Africa.

“Level 3 is a notable achievement for us, considering the inherent challenges of the steel industry.

Over the past year, a concerted effort was made to improve our initiatives within the various target

elements,” says the Scaw Metals Group CEO Markus Hannemann.

Scaw improved its rating in five of the seven criteria, which are ownership, management control,

employment equity, skills development, preferential procurement, enterprise and supplier

development and socioeconomic development. Significant improvements have been made in

employment equity-related elements and preferential procurement.

“We took significant steps to ensure that we attract, empower and upskill females in this male-

dominated industry. We have female employees in various management positions around our

operations and we have also welcomed two female board members, Neo Violet Mokhesi and

Nokuzola Amanda Mpulo,” says Hannemann.

“We will continue to push for more female representation in our business,” he adds.

To become the catalyst for empowering women in the industry, Scaw established a forum that

supports career growth for these women and encourages more women to con- sider a career in the

steel industry.

Scaw’s business philosophy impacts on the communities where its operations take place. It is

imperative that it becomes a responsible corporate citizen, says Hannemann.

During 2013, Scaw embarked on various corporate social investment (CSI) programmes, which

included education, the environment and sports development.

“In the last year, we supported our surrounding communities, working in partnership with

nongovernmental organisations, such as Food & Trees for Africa, the Adopt-A-School Foundation

and the Epworth Children’s Home. I believe that having a holistic CSI programme is key to the

wellbeing of our employees and the communities in which we operate,” highlights Hanneman.

“I am proud of what we have done here at Scaw. We have come a long way to improve our black

economic-empowerment rating. We have implemented various initiatives, which we will continue to

benefit from in the future,” says Scaw Metals Group executive chairperson Ufikile Khumalo.

BBBEE is a programme launched by the South African government to redress the inequalities

experienced by marginalised citizens prior to 1994. BBBEE includes measures such as employment

preference, skills development, ownership, management, socioeconomic development and

preferential procurement.

“Scaw is a proudly South African company and is committed to and supportive of the aims of the

Department of Trade and Industry. We look forward to the challenge that lies ahead with the

implementation of the revised 2013 BBBEE Codes of Good Practice,” concludes Hannemann.

Construction of grinding media plant under way in Ghana

CONSTRUCTION is under way on a new grinding media plant that promises to significantly increase

South African steel products manufacturer Scaw Metals’ grinding media capacity on the African

continent, the company tells Mining Weekly.

The media plant, which is being constructed in Tema, Ghana, is valued at more than $40-million, and

is being manufactured in partnership with South African investment company Guma Group, as well

as Ghanaian investment company Jospong Group.

Scaw Metals says that the plant, which will boast a yearly capacity of 50 000 t, should become

operational within 18 months and will offer significant job opportunities to local community

members.

Scaw Metals is the largest producer of cast high-chrome grinding media in the southern hemisphere

and is the primary producer and supplier of high chrome and forged grinding balls for Africa’s

platinum, copper and gold mining industries.

“We are delighted to be opening a plant in Ghana as this is an outbound investment for a South

African entity. Further, the Ghanaian government has made a significant push for the local

manufacturing industry to stimulate economic growth and job creation,” says Scaw Metals CE

Markus Hannemann.

Scaw Metals in Ghana

Scaw Metals has been present in Ghana since 2011, when the company’s Ghanaian operation was

registered as a regional sales office to service the West African region. With offices in Tema, Scaw

Ghana functions as a local contact base for all of the products manufactured by the company’s South

Africa branch that may be in demand in West Africa.

“From our experience in Ghana to date, we are certain that we will be able to take advantage of the

region’s vast potential. The skills development we will be providing for the employees of the plant

will ensure that it will have a significant knock-on effect in the local community,” says Hannemann.

The consortium, including Guma Group and Jospong Group, which holds 30% of the entity, will be

given first preference to supply products and services during construction of the plant and

thereafter. “We are looking forward to the partnership with Scaw Metals, as supplying the region

will grow our business further. We will also look for other steel beneficiation opportunities in

Ghana,” says Jospong Group chairperson Joseph Siaw Agyepong.

Meanwhile, Guma Group says that its investment in the plant showcases the value that public–

private partnerships can bring to infrastructure development in Africa. “This plant serves as a

catalyst for the enhancement of business-to-business relationships, which is much needed for job

creation and trade in the region,” says Guma Group chairperson Robert Gumede.

The consortium will bring additional investment to Ghana by increasing the country’s steel product

manufacturing capabilities, which leads to the production of other steel-related products, including

rolled products, long-steel products, reinforcing bars, low-and high-carbon wired rods, and

reinforcing coil.

Scaw Metals, which considers itself a leading producer of forged grinding media in Africa, says that

demand for forged grinding media comes predominantly from the gold and copper industries on the

continent.

Scaw Metals is also a South Africa-based integrated steelmaker that produces specialised and critical

consumable components for the mining, rail, power, offshore oil and gas, and construction

industries, among other industrial sectors. The business operates through four product-focused

business units with facilities in South Africa.

Guma Group

Guma Group is a 100% black-owned, entrepreneurial diversified group with interests in energy,

power generation, information and communication technology, infrastructure development,

tourism, property, real estate and shopping centre development, the water and sanitation industry

and the mining industry.
