“Cameras At Antietam”
Although cameras were around before the Civil War, the war became a new ven-
ue for photography. However, because exposure times were so long, it was almost
impossible to capture action shots. Most photographs were portraits of soldiers,
or dead soldiers on the battlefield. How do you think photographs like this one
affected the civilian perspective of the war?

If you were a civil war soldier wounded in the arm, your chance
of death was 14%. If you were wounded in the hip, your chance
of death was 88%. Amputation was the most common treat-
ment for wounds. While your arm could be amputated, little
could be done to treat your hip wound.

“Mobilizing the Nation”
Trench Warfare & Deadly Gas
Since Trench warfare often resulted in stalemate, the
introduction of chemical weapons such as Chlorine and Mustard
Gases became a way to break this deadlock. Mustard Gas was
first used by the Germans in 1917.
Mustard Gas is comprised of 4 elements
found on the Periodic Table:
Carbon
Hydrogen
Chlorine
Sulfur
The Molecular Formula is:
C4H8Cl2S
Circle the Elements
that make up
Mustard Gas on the
Periodic Table.
Find the interactive Touch Screen and read about Gas Masks.

Find the Sopwith Camel Biplane. A biplane has two sets of wings. These planes had more victories in WWI than any other type of
plane. These planes were tricky to fly, and more people were injured or killed during training than in action. The pilot Rodney Wil-
liams flew this plane and performed dangerous maneuvers.
1. The Sopwith Camel Biplane is preparing to fly from London to Berlin, a total of 678 Miles. Estimate how long it will take if the
biplane travels at max speed? _____________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
How many times will they need to refuel? ___________________________________
2. It takes over 17 minutes for the biplane to reach it’s service ceiling, what equation
could you use to calculate this? ___________________________________________

more advanced technology. Look over the stats for the
P-51 Mustang and compare them to the same figures

“Battle of
the Bulge”
In December 1944, a major German offensive is launched against the Allies in the Ardennes Moun-
tains region on the Western Front.
Because it was the middle of Winter,
temperatures were frigid. Convert the
temperatures below from Celsius to
Fahrenheit using the equation below.
The soldiers from Wisconsin’s 32nd Division were sent to
Buna, New Guinea in the South Pacific. Tall, sharp Kunai
Grass sliced through soldiers’ clothes and skin.
Plants like Kunai Grass use
Photosynthesis to make food.
Fill in the diagram using the
words in the box below:
To convert from Celsius to
Fahrenheit:
Multiply by 9,
then divide by 5,
then add 32.

Korea. During the Korean War it was the sight of numerous dogfights between American
and North Korean Pilots.
North Korean Pilots flew the MiG-15 Fighter Jet, while American Pilots flew the F-86 Sa-
bre Fighter Jet. Compare the stats of each of these jets below and answer the questions.
1. How much further could the F-86 Sabre travel before needing to refuel ? ___________
2. If each jet had to travel the 4,000 miles from Moscow to Seoul, and they leave at the
same time which one will arrive first? _________________________________________

soldiers have been from
Wisconsin, and 115 soldiers
from Wisconsin have died
