Thank You!A big thank you from SCAR to everyoneinvolved who made this first calendar such a success! A special thanks to our partners Heart of Chelsea and Lower East Side Animal Hospital.

About Sean Casey:Sean Casey, a.k.a. “the Pit Bull Whisperer”, is a self-taught, award-winning animal rescuer. Born in Brooklyn, his formative years were spent aiding his mother with trap-neuter-release projects. Especially interested in reptiles,Sean became the adoptions coordinator for the New York Herpetological Society at age 14, and within a year was the go-to expert on exotic animals for organizations including the ASPCA and Animal Care & Control. In 2004, withhundreds of rescues under his belt, he opened the doors to Sean Casey Animal Rescue, a no-kill, non-profit shelter that not only dogs and cats—but also reptiles, birds, bunnies, and more—call home. A decade later, SCAR now boasts two locations in Brooklyn—Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park—from which an average of 2,000 confiscated, neglected, or otherwise unwanted animals are rehabilitated and re-homed per year. A grassroots organization that runs on a shoestring budget, SCAR has become a local hub for pet owners seeking guidance, and Sean himself has become a household name in the community. But the way Sean sees things, adoption is a Band-Aid to a greater problem. His ultimate goal is to educate the public on overpopulation and euthanasia—issues that, with the support of the community, don’t need to be issues for much longer.

1JOSIE By Jennifer Capobianco

My name is Josie. I was rescued by SCAR in 2012, when I was about three years old, and adopted that fall when my mom spotted me at a street fair on Church Avenue in Brooklyn. We spent the afternoon together, and she took me home with her that evening. After some initial training, I now make a sincere effort to greet other dogs politely and walk like a lady on my leash. I do, I admit, have a very strong squirrel-hunting drive, which began back in Kentucky, where I am from. It’s been incredible to feel so loved and contented in my new home. My tail is almost always wagging. I’m forever grateful to Sean Casey for saving me.

2BRUNO By Enzo Guidi

Bruno was named Crixus by Animal Care & Control, then Cricket by SCAR, but he was known to us as Bruno by the time he got in the car to go to his new home. Sean Casey saw that this sick, emaciated dog was in fact a good, happy boy in a bad spot. At approximately two years old, this 50% Neapolitan mastiff (hence the fat neck) was so underweight at 77 lbs that you could see every bone in his body—including those in his neck! He was so scared of people and dogs, he shook with fear every time he saw one. Bruno has been with us for two years now. His rehab and training was tough at times, but a complete success. He is now 140 lbs of happy love! He lives peacefully with two cats, eats without anxiety, and is a favorite with his many canine and human friends at the local dog park.

3BABYFACE By Laura Seiverling

When I adopted Babyface from SCAR two years ago, he was incredibly fearful and wanted to stay inside his cage; however, he still appreciated a good belly rub. It was a slow process, but Babyface came out of his shell and overcame many of his fears. These days, he loves playing with other dogs and chasing his ball. In addition to his adorable personality, Babyface has quite a unique look, hence the name: he’s the kind of dog that gets a lot of double takes, followed by comments like, “He looks prehistoric!” and questions like, “What is he?” Some have said his face looks human-like. Human or not, he’s got a heart of gold. Thank you to SCAR for rescuing and providing a safe haven for Babyface until he found his forever home.

4SCHATZI By Rachel Moreno

Schatzi is a special girl. A failed hunting dog, as a pup she was discarded because she was (is) scared of loud noises. She was rescued and fostered for a time. While at the rescue she was discovered to have the canine version of breast cancer, and our dear friend Susan adopted and adored her. Last year, after loving and caring for Schatzi—and Schatzi her—Susan passed away from breast cancer. Schatzi now lives in Brooklyn with us, Rachel & Lou, and fills our lives with never-ending love and joy. Thanks to all of Schatzi’s friends and family for their donations and for nominating her as Miss April. This is dedicated to our dear friend Susan.

5RUFFLES By Genevieve Hein

After one trip around the block with Ruffles, we knew we had to take him home. He immediately cuddled us and licked our faces. We couldn’t believe how affectionate and trusting he could be after what he’d been through. Ruffles was discovered by a neighbor, chained to a post on a rooftop with a rubber band around his mouth. We are grateful every day for the man who saved Ruffles and brought him to SCAR.

6JON-BONGO By Susan Caccavale

My name is Bongo. SCAR rescued me when I was living on the streets and was hit by a car. It was a rough time, but now I have a family who loves me very much. Even though I only have three legs now, I still run and jump, cuddle and snuggle, and go everywhere with my family. I’m even the mascot for my human brother Michael’s sports teams. I’m so happy to be on the calendar and raise money so that Sean Casey can help other animals.

7JULEP By Kerry Steib

Julep “Meatball” Steib was adopted in November 2011 at an event in Brooklyn. Her mother and litter were found in an abandoned shed in Kentucky. We didn’t think we wanted a seven-week-old puppy, but she won us over with her face-licking. Over the past three years, Julep has surprised us by being able to get out of her locked crate, melted our hearts by sleeping in a box of our sweatshirts, and brought us so much joy every time we come home to her.

8BRILLA By Samantha Kluk

Soon after I began working in animal medicine, I knew I had to adopt a dog of my own. Enter Brilla—named so because she is wire-haired and feels like a brillo pad. She came to me five years ago from a New England-based rescue after being pulled from a kill shelter in Arkansas. Brilla was a lucky girl, but unfortunately was also very sick: an X-ray diagnosed her with pneumonia. I spent the my few weeks with Brilla hand-feeding her and nursing her back to health...and we have been inseparable ever since. These days, she can be found entertaining the kids in our neighborhood or working the front desk as the unofficial mascot of Lower East Side Animal Hospital.

9LEON By Sarma Melngailis

Leon was a four-month-old puppy covered head-to-paw in severe demodectic mange. He was a giant scab that someone had dumped on the streets of Brooklyn. Sean Casey Animal Rescue picked him up, put him on medication, and took care of him. Then one day, his soon-to-be mom Sarma saw his photo and fell in love immediately. They’ve been together for four years, and today, Leon (@oneluckypuppy on Twitter and Facebook) is a tireless advocate for animal rights, selling his greeting cards at oneluckyduck.com to benefit SCAR. Leon is excited to make his calendar debut with SCAR’s 12Tails, a campaign he hopes will help SCAR rescue more dogs (and cats) like him who just need another chance.

10MARVIN By Amanda Reno

My name is Marvin. My biological mom was brought to Sean Casey Animal Rescue pregnant with me and my three siblings—each one a different breed. I was the last of the litter to be adopted, but on January 27, 2013, at four months old, my new mom and dad brought me to my forever home along with my brother Bernerd. He is a cat but I love him anyway. We chase each other every morning and we snuggle each other every night. I am so grateful to SCAR for the work they do and so honored to be in their calendar.

11XANDER By Kat Perino

Meet SCAR grad Xander, who was found in a box in a backyard in Staten Island with his puppy siblings when he was only a few months old. He made his way to SCAR, where I was a volunteer looking for my first pooch, and so I was kept in mind. I picked up Xander on November 3, 2012—the weekend after Superstorm Sandy hit. Since he was my first dog, I was nervous and unsure, but Xander has been adorable and lovable since the moment he came into my life. He is a funny, playful, cuddle-monster of a puppy. And he does his part to fundraise and support SCAR, too: he’s the puppy in the Howl-O-Ween Bark Block Party kissing booth and he helps me sell SCAR gear at events. I love my SCAR grad Xander! And you will, too!

12KAYA By Sara Zavala

Last July, Sean Casey Animal Rescue posted a picture of a big-eared buddy named Harriet, who had most likely been kept in a small cage for most of her seven months on Earth. She was afraid of every-thing. When she met me, on shaky legs, I became the lucky recipient of the most gentle, genuine face lick in the history of face licks. This was a soul that needed love and patience. I related and adopted my daughter on the spot. The first few weeks, anytime she was spooked by a loud noise, she would freeze in fear, and I would have to carry her. Slowly, she realized I would never let anything happen to her, and she has carried me ever since. We renamed her Kaya, and she now enjoys the dog park, where she runs as if training for a marathon. I was at a low place when I found Kaya, but she has become my constant high. She saved me, and for that I am eternally grateful.
