ABSTRACT

Dental amalgam has passed the “time test” for over 150 years as a strong, durable and relatively inexpensive

restorative material. However, recently, a strong wave of „anti-amalgamists‟ is trying to rid amalgam because of

disadvantages including micro-leakage, lack of adhesion to tooth structure or sensitivity. Various factors influence

the adaptability of amalgam to the walls of the prepared cavity. Apart from manipulation steps like tituration,

condensation and choice of alloys play an important role in better adaptability of restoration to the prepared cavity

walls.

The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the amalgam tooth structure interface of amalgam restoration.

Classical Class I cavity preparation was done in freshly extracted human mandible premolar. Amalgam

restoration was done using three different types of amalgam alloy powders. The Amalgam-tooth structure

interface was observed with scanning electron microscope. The Gap-size and the discrepancies in

the amalgam tooth interface were recorded. The data was statistically analyzed and result was given.
