FADE IN:

1 INT./EXT. VARIOUS PHOTOGRAPHS - DAY 1

We SMASH INTO a series of ARCHIVAL PHOTOGRAPHS:

1A -AMIDST A BUSY OVAL OFFICE BRIEFING FULL OF AIDES, FITZ DUCKS 1AHIS HEAD DOWN, EAR COCKED AS CYRUS WHISPERS INTO IT. FITZ'SFACE SHOWS HIS SHOCK. THROUGH THE OPEN DOOR BEHIND HIM, WECAN SEE MELLIE MAKING HER WAY INTO THE ROOM, HER FACE STONYAND COLD.

1B -CYRUS, SHOULDERS SLUMPED, LEANS AGAINST HIS DESK. FLUTTERING 1BIN THE AIR ON ITS WAY TO HIS FEET IS THE VIVID FRONT PAGE OFTHE DISTRICT TIMES. ITS HEADLINE SCREAMS: FIRST MISTRESS?

1C -WE'RE PEEKING THROUGH THE DOOR OF THE OVAL. FAR AWAY. BUT 1CNOT TOO FAR TO CATCH A GLIMPSE OF MELLIE RAGE-WHISPERING ATCYRUS, her face contorted with rage. BEYOND THEM, FITZ PLAYSPEEK-A-BOO WITH BABY TEDDY, determined to remain OBLIVIOUS.

1D -WHITE HOUSE AIDES AND ASSISTANTS (INCLUDING ETHAN) STAND 1DSTARING UP AT THE BANKS OF TELEVISIONS, THEIR NECKS STRAINING,WATCHING AS AN IMAGE OF OLIVIA POPE AND FITZGERALD GRANTAPPEAR ON THE SCREEN. ONE AIDE, JEANNINE, IS CLEARLY TRYINGNOT TO CRY.

1E -BENEATH A PORTRAIT OF JACKIE O, MELLIE SITS ALONE IN A CHAIR 1ESOMEWHERE IN THE WHITE HOUSE. HER SHOES OFF, HER FEET CURLEDUNDER HER. SHE LOOKS LONELY AND TIRED AND AFRAID. AND SHECLEARLY BELIEVES SHE IS ALONE. BECAUSE SHE'S SHOVING HALF ACANDY BAR INTO HER MOUTH.

1F -FITZ SITS AT HIS DESK IN THE OVAL. HANDS CLASPED UNDER HIS 1FCHIN. STARING INTO SPACE. IMMOBILE. AROUND HIM, THE ARMYOF AIDES AND CYRUS SWIRLS AROUND HIM. THEY ARE A BLUR OFMOVEMENT AND ENERGY. FITZ IS TOTALLY STILL.

And as we SWIPE through these iconic images -- the ones thatbelong on the covers of Time and Newsweek, in newspapers andall those commemorative photo books that document generation-defining moments like this -- we finally get to a STILL ofTHE SCENE OUTSIDE OLIVIA'S APARTMENT FROM THE END OF 222:

1G Where OLIVIA shields her face from the SEA OF REPORTERS with 1GTWO MEN IN SUITS hustling her into Rowan's car (from Ep 222). And as we go off this frozen image...

2 INT. LIMO - DAY 2

Olivia sits exactly where we last saw her. In the limo. Staring at ROWAN. Staring at her Dad. In disbelief. Weget the feeling she's been doing this for a long time. Rowaneyes her. She eyes him. He glances at his watch.

ROWAN22 minutes without making a sound. If only you'd been this quiet as achild.

Olivia doesn't say anything. Just stares him down. Rowanleans in.

ROWAN (CONT'D)You're trying to figure out yournext move. You're weighing youroptions. Let me help you. Thereare no moves, no options. Game over. Daddy's home.

OLIVIAWhy did you try to have me killed?

ROWANI didn't try to have you killed. Itried to have Jake Ballard killed.

OLIVIA(sarcastic)

Oh. Well. Fine.(then)

What did you do to him? Is he alive?

ROWANThat's not the question you shouldbe asking. The question you shouldbe asking is, are you?

As Liv takes this in, the car turns and Rowan looks up.

ROWAN (CONT'D)We're here.

3 EXT. AIRPLANE HANGAR - CONTINUOUS 3

The car pulls into a hangar. Parks. The door opens andRowan and Olivia get out. Olivia stands, staring at abeautiful G5 jet and its crew waiting at attention. Thenshe turns and looks at Rowan.

Your story is nodifferent from a thousand otherstories in this town. So you knowhow this goes. You know the drill. You can call this in your sleep. Hell, you wrote the White Houseplaybook for them. First, they'llsmile, be warm, sympathetic, on yourside, letting you know they willfight for you. They'll lull youinto a false sense of security. Andthen once your belly's exposed, theywill turn on you, disown you, dragyour name through the mud. They'llmake you a scapegoat for every awfulthing they've ever done. They willgut you and everyone you know. Andthey will be swift about it. By thetime you realize you should befighting back...well, you're alreadybleeding to death. It's thePresidency versus you. He knows everything. And as that realization comes over herface...

You will never whisper sweetnothings at Camp David, you willnever touch the Constitution, youwill never defile the Resolute Deskin the Oval Office ever again. Thatlife is over. This new life? Isruined. They will ruin it. Theywill destroy your life. And yourbusiness. And the lives of the peoplewho work for you. Do you understandthat?

Olivia stares at him, stricken. And for just a beat, Rowanloses it. He leans in, furious and paternal and loving andabusive.

And right before our eyes, Olivia Pope seems to get smaller, lesser, muted. It's awful.

Rowan pulls it together. Breathes. Awkwardly pats her asif to soften that exchange. He's not the best dad in theworld but he is her dad.

ROWAN (CONT'D)Your staff will be taken care offinancially. Your business willcontinue to run. Money is not aproblem. There is always money. Money bought that plane. Money boughtthe silence of the gentlemen flyingthe plane. On board you'll find anenvelope. It contains a passport, aSwiss bank book, a go file, anentirely new identity. A40 INT. WHITE HOUSE/CONFERENCE ROOM - NIGHT A40

CYRUSIs the kill folder ready?

ETHANThere's not much, but-

Jeannine stands, cutting him off.

JEANNINEIt's enough for what we need.

And with that, she opens the FOLDER that's sitting on thetable, pulling out pages for Cyrus to look at as she speaks-

JEANNINEOnly child. Mother Maya was asecretary; died when Olivia was twelve. Father Eli curates antiquities at theSmithsonian, has ever since graduatingfrom Princeton in '67.

CYRUSWhere are the family photos?

ETHANVery private family, by all accounts. Didn't hang with the Georgetown set.

JEANNINEDidn't have the dough. Her dad musthave spent most of his income onboarding schools for his daughter, because she's been to nothing but thebest -- St. Anne's, Surval Montreaux-

Photographs of Olivia in an immaculate SCHOOL UNIFORM; SKIINGin GSTAAD; riding a DRESSAGE HORSE. And though these picturesare beautiful, and glamorous, we can't help but notice thatin every photo, Olivia is alone.

JEANNINE (CONT'D)But she never lived in the familyhome again after her mother's death.

Cyrus takes the photos, looks at them.

CYRUSI never knew that about her.

And now there's a hint of sadness on Cyrus's face, as theloneliness of Liv's childhood sinks in. We catch it, butEthan's oblivious-

What did you say in thebunker? Stop looking for a way outand look for a way through? You getme to play the good wife, control meand by extension the nation? Because, and here's the best part: You stillsomehow believe that the countrywill eventually embrace the idea ofyou bringing your whore into theWhite House as First Lady. And stepone? Leaking Liv's name.

And Fitz is moving in to Mellie, faster and darker than we'veseen him in a while. Tougher. Also hotter and sexierbecause, let's face it, America: a dark Fitz is a hot Fitz.

FITZNo. Step one? Was me coming toBlair House and laying my head inyour lap like I gave a damn aboutyour forgiveness. This is a war,Mellie. You and I are at war. Whathappened today is simply one battleof many.

And off Mellie, we FLASH TO:

We're on a TV screen. News anchor TANNER SHAW, interviewsVANESSA CHANDLER, an attractive young society reporter withmore game than her fancy outfit suggests.

TANNER SHAWJoining us now, the reporter whobroke this story -- Vanessa Chandlerof the Post's Styles section... Vanessa -- we have a name now. FormerWhite House Communications DirectorOlivia Pope. How sure are you thatshe's the woman who had an allegedaffair with President Grant?

VANESSA CHANDLER It's just one source but it's a goodsource. A source in a position toknow the true identity of thePresident's mistress. And, well...youknow how this works. It's just amatter of time before others comeout of the woodwork and more detailsemerge.

TANNER SHAWCan you give us an idea of how highup this person is in theadministration?

VANESSA CHANDLERNo. They came to me in confidenceat great personal and professionalrisk. Whenthat happens, Tanner, you will findout about it like everyone else, byreading my blog in the Styles sectionof the Post's website.

TANNER SHAW (CONT'D)story and we have not heard anycomment from the White House.

VANESSA CHANDLERI think the silence says it all. Look, we're not talking about somedoe-eyed intern here. As you said, she was President Grant'sCommunications Director. Beforethat she was one of his closestadvisors on the campaign. This is awoman who directly influenced policy. If she attained that level of powerwhile she was sleeping with thePresident, it could be very bad forthe administration. The White Houseobviously has to plan their nextmove very carefully. With everymoment that goes by without the WhiteHouse addressing it, I become moreconfident that I'm right on this.

TANNER SHAWLet's talk about Olivia Pope. Otherthan her work at the White House, what do we know about her?

VANESSA CHANDLERIn a word, she's fabulous. She'sstylish, beautiful and extremelycapable. I've been in this town along time and I know more than myfair share of power players who owetheir entire careers -- in some caseseven their lives -- to the servicesof Olivia Pope-

Thosesources at the same time denyingthat Olivia Pope had any form ofinappropriate relationship with thePresident. And promising a livestatement from the President sometimetoday. Although the sources wouldnot elaborate on the content of thePresident's statement, it will likelybe an admission of guilt and officialconfirmation that Jeannine Locke isindeed the woman the First Lady wasreferring to when she went on livetelevision and revealed to me thatPresident Grant had been unfaithful.
