This AGM year will see a fundamental change to the way we, as a club, will operate in the future. That is that we will be focusing on not receiving in-kind assistance for our month to month meetings. In a great and frank discussion last meeting, the membership in attendance, all showed overwhelming (100%) support to seeking a permanent booking and taking on the resultant membership fee increase. In-kind assistance has allowed us over the past ten years, probably more, to maintain our current level of fees. As we have seen, clubs like the Hellenic Club are reviewing the amount of support they provide to clubs such as ours, and as we have witnessed many times, our bookings are at the "mercy" of paying customers – sometimes at quite late notice. Re-structuring of our fees to maintain our ongoing presence at the Hellenic Club – remembering that the facilities are first class and meet all our needs and could not be replicated elsewhere – cannot happen without a financial impost. Given the support that was shown last meeting, the committee will now formulate a three-part proposal that I will bring to an Extraordinary General Meeting in December. The three parts will be a vote on increasing membership fees, backdating those fees so that everyone pays the same amount, and a recommended fee structure. The most important part of this new business model is that we will require all members to pay their fees as soon as possible into the new AGM year. We can also mitigate against future fee increases by increasing our membership. Over the last couple of years there has been slow growth in our numbers. I acknowledge that some of those numbers are transient increases and decreases in yearly Defence and APS movements. Thus, the Committee would like to hear from you your ideas on how we can grow our numbers – outside of the staple Canberra Show, ScaleACT and digital presence. I think we can be more proactive during ScaleACT and we have made some initial inquiries into appointing a Publicity/Recruitment Officer, however I think we can look into brainstorming and discovering other avenues and opportunities to recruit new members. One opportunity might be the re-introduction of Associate Memberships and greater interaction with other clubs in the ACT and interstate. President’s Report

Another AGM out of the way, and now our attention (nearly) focuses all on ScaleACT. This AGM year will see a

fundamental change to the way we, as a club, will operate in the future. That is that we will be focusing on not

receiving in-kind assistance for our month to month meetings. In a great and frank discussion last meeting, the

membership in attendance, all showed overwhelming (100%) support to seeking a permanent booking and taking

on the resultant membership fee increase.

In-kind assistance has allowed us over the past ten years, probably more, to maintain our current level of fees. As

we have seen, clubs like the Hellenic Club are reviewing the amount of support they provide to clubs such as ours,

and as we have witnessed many times, our bookings are at the "mercy" of paying customers – sometimes at quite

late notice. Re-structuring of our fees to maintain our ongoing presence at the Hellenic Club – remembering that

the facilities are first class and meet all our needs and could not be replicated elsewhere – cannot happen without

a financial impost.

Given the support that was shown last meeting, the committee will now formulate a three-part proposal that I

will bring to an Extraordinary General Meeting in December. The three parts will be a vote on increasing

membership fees, backdating those fees so that everyone pays the same amount, and a recommended fee

structure. The most important part of this new business model is that we will require all members to pay their

fees as soon as possible into the new AGM year.

We can also mitigate against future fee increases by increasing our membership. Over the last couple of years

there has been slow growth in our numbers. I acknowledge that some of those numbers are transient increases

and decreases in yearly Defence and APS movements. Thus, the Committee would like to hear from you your

ideas on how we can grow our numbers – outside of the staple Canberra Show, ScaleACT and digital presence. I

think we can be more proactive during ScaleACT and we have made some initial inquiries into appointing a

Publicity/Recruitment Officer, however I think we can look into brainstorming and discovering other avenues and

opportunities to recruit new members. One opportunity might be the re-introduction of Associate Memberships

and greater interaction with other clubs in the ACT and interstate.

From the Editor

ScaleACT approaches, much work still needs to be done, no time to write (much), back to modelling!

Editor Min Hwang

Treasurer’s Waffle

Another new (financial) year and that means annual subs are due. The bills are already starting to come in for

ScaleACT 19 and your subs go a long way to contributing to the cost of our annual ‘show-off event’, so a big

thank-you!

As of 14 October 2019, we have 54 financial members including our illustrious 3 Life Members, with about a third

of people paying into the society’s account direct and the remainder in cash payments. As always, I am happy to

take your annual sub payment at the monthly meeting. If you need the bank account details, simply send me an

email on [email protected].

If you wish to take advantage of the benefits of membership which includes free entry to ScaleACT and no

competition entry fees or commission if selling in our Sales Room, your membership needs to be renewed on or

before our November meeting.

ACTSMS Treasurer Elaine Jones

Chief Judge’s Spotlight

2018-19 was the fourth year of our People’s Choice judging competition. While the total number of entries was

down from last year’s 143, it was still a very respectable 134 (compared to 110 for 2016-17).

Of more importance was the high overall quality of entries, across a wide range of modelling genres. This breadth

was reflected in the monthly winners, which you will find detailed in the Year in Review section of this newsletter.

2018-19’s Modeller of the Year – the modeller who receives the most points in People’s Choice voting across the

year – is Min Hwang with a total of 584 points. In second place was Mario Marangoni with 196 points, followed

by Luis Pinzon with 152 points.

Min also won the Exhibitor of the Year award, presented to the modeller with the highest number of People’s

Choice entries for the year, with 30 entries. Eric O’Brien was second with 16 entries, and Mario Marangoni

rounded out the top three with 14 entries.

Completing what I’m pretty sure is our first scoop for the top three People’s Choice awards, Min also carried off

the annual Best-of-the-Best prize by winning the vote off between each of the above monthly winners at the

August AGM. As noted below in this newsletter, however, this was by the barest of margins, with Min’s lovely

1/48 Cutlass beating out Luis Pinzon’s Honda RC 211 by one vote.

Well that’s a wrap from me – this will be my last newsletter, and ScaleACT, as Chief Judge. I’ll still be around, just

keeping a lower profile and (hopefully!) a more productive modelling output than the last couple of years!

VP’s Corner and ACTSMS Calendar of Events 2019/20

After the AGM I have now stepped into the role of Vice-President. I’m not one for many words so I’ll keep this

brief. A part of my responsibility is to organise the Calendar of Events for the year. I recently got access to the

results from the survey that was recently run and the biggest response to what people would like to see more of

is building and demos. As it is a democracy, I want to try and deliver on this request over the next twelve months;

however, to do this I need help from everyone within the Club – at the end of the day its everyone’s responsibility

to assist in making the club what we want of it.

We have a number of great model builders within the membership and sharing this knowledge is key to growing

the club and the hobby. Something you think might to be basic, common knowledge or ‘easy’ might not be for

someone just starting out. So, in saying this, if someone has something they’re willing to share, from opening a

new kit box to applying the final touches to your models, I would like you to email or contact me by private

message on Facebook to discuss further.

From January I will be encouraging everyone to bring along what they are currently working on to the meeting.

There will be a table or two designated for in-progress builds, I think this is good to help generate discussion and

to assist people who might want to know how someone does something during their building steps.

Finally, I am planning to organise four (4) group builds next year that will run for a period of three (3) months

each. There will be incentives for people to get building and Toyworld have come to the party for the first group

build by donating a $50, $30 and a $20 voucher for prizes. I have ideas for two themes next, again if you have

suggestions please get in contact with me. There will be other incentives also. Details are still being finalised so

keep an eye out in your email inbox and on Facebook sometime after ScaleACT for these details.

People’s Choice – The Year in Review

Given that we ended our annual People’s Choice competition cycle back in August, now might be a good time to

have a look back at all the winners and runners-up over the months.

In all, we had 9 months’ worth of People’s Choice ‘rounds’; the only months where this didn’t occur were when

we had the End-of-Year Members-only Special Competition in December, the Swap & Sell event in May, and the

Annual AGM in August (at which the Club voted it’s Best-of-the-Best entry).

Before we get into the pictures, here’s some interesting statistics on the genres and number of submissions

received in each of them. In all, we had a total of 134 completed works on the tables, with the vast majority of

them being military aircraft.

Genre Count % Work is being done to collect additional information so if there’s an interest in seeing details such as scales and manufacturers, these can be presented at the end of the next cycle. Note though that the information will need to be completed accurately and in full in the entry slips, when you put your models down on the People’s Choice table each month!

As voted by the Club members on the night of the AGM in August 2019, the F7U-3M Cutlass, built OOB by Min from the 1/48

scale Hobby Craft kit, received the Best-of-the-Best award. The August meeting wrapped up the 2018-19 People’s Choice cycle

and all 1st Place winners were presented for a final vote-off.

Worth noting is that this year’s final vote saw the Cutlass win by the narrowest of margins, only 1 point separated it from the

Once again, we’re planning our ever-popular Saturday Night Dinner – an informal bistro meal

from 7pm at the Sothern Cross Club Jamieson. If you’d like to come, please email

[email protected] with your name and the number of seats you’d like to reserve.

Volunteering:

We need plenty of help to make the event a success, and in particular we need a large pool of

judges to make short work of the model competition on the Saturday afternoon.

So, if you can spare some time over the weekend, please visit the “Helping out” page on our

website (https://actsms.asn.au/scaleact/help-out/) to let us know how and when you can help.

Don't be concerned if you've not previously judged at a Scale ACT competition, you'll be paired

with an experienced judge who will help guide you through the process.

Jobs include such things as assisting at the Swap & Sell, manning the front door, working at the

build table, venue set-up and pack up, and so on.

Your assistance will be very much appreciated!

Presentations/Workshops:

This year we’d like to make more of the presentation/workshop programme, to help showcase the

skills involved in our hobby and how much fun it can be. If you’ve got something you can talk

about within a 1hr block, please let us know!

If you have any further questions, or want up-to-date information on the

event, the ACTSMS website (http://www.actsms.asn.au) or our Facebook

pages “ACTSMS” or “Scale ACT 19” should be your first places to look.

If that doesn't help, please send an email to [email protected]

ScaleACT 2019: The Kittyhawk Cup

Revell 1/48 MiG-21 SMT kits.

Eligible models:

Kittyhawk Cup Rules

The Rules are very simple:

• Only the kits listed above are eligible

• The competition is open to all modellers, ACTSMS members or not

• The model must be constructed strictly to ACTSMS ‘Out-of-the-Box‘ rules. No materials not provided in

the original box may be used. No aftermarket parts etc. No cross-kitting (transferring parts between

boxings) permitted. The one exception to the Out of the Box principal relates to decals (see below)

• Modellers may finish their models using aftermarket decals and/or paint schemes

• Kittyhawk Cup entries will be judged as a stand-alone category, provided ACTSMS judging rules regarding

number of category entries and entrants are met.

What is the Kittyhawk Cup?

The Kittyhawk Cup is a special Scale ACT judging category where all entrants must build a particular 1/72 aircraft

model, to our “Out of the Box” rules.

Oh, and why call this special aircraft competition the “Kittyhawk Cup? This comes from a project undertaken by

ACTSMS members to build eight Academy 1/72 P-40E Kittyhawk models in RAAF markings for the Australian War

Memorial.

Sentinel Shield Rules

• Only the kits listed above are eligible for entry

• The competition is open to all modellers, ACTSMS members or not

• The model must be constructed strictly to ACTSMS ‘Out of the Box‘ rules. No materials not found in the

original box may be used. No aftermarket parts etc. There are two exceptions for this year and this kit;

(see below)

− Out of the Box Exception 1: modellers may finish their models using aftermarket decals and/or

paint schemes

− Out of the Box Exception 2: modellers may add home-made or aftermarket zimmerit anti-

magnetic mine paste

• Sentinel Shield entries will be judged as a stand-alone category, provided ACTSMS judging rules regarding

number of category entries and entrants are met.

What is the Sentinel Shield?

The Sentinel Shield is a special Scale ACT judging category where all entrants must build a particular AFV model,

to ACTSMS “Out of the Box” rules.

Oh, and why call this special military vehicle competition the “Sentinel” Shield? This comes from the AC1 Sentinel,

the Australian-designed and manufactured tank produced during WWII.

ScaleACT 2019 “Grail” Competition – At the Movies

We all love the movies and television, right?!

Since the very beginning, vehicles and props have appeared as backdrops or as characters for the action, to bring

life to the screen. And, of course, where there’s a camera there needs to be actors and characters in costume!

We invite Scale ACT 19 attendees to enter models of any real-life vehicle or item (props) that have appeared in a

movie or on television or used behind the scenes, and actors and physical movie/tv characters, into our special

“The Grail: At the Movies” competition category.

The theme of the Scale ACT 19 “Grail” special competition came about as 2019 sees the 50th anniversary of The

Battle of Britain – the movie, that is! – which saw many aircraft being used in the flying sequences (some original,

some modified, and some pretending to be something else entirely!).

What’s eligible for the Scale ACT 19 “Grail” competition?

Any real-life vehicle or item (props) that has appeared in a movie or on television, whether it has depicted its

original subject, or been painted or modified somehow to “act” as something else. Also eligible are models of

actors and physical movie/tv characters (not CGI or animated).

Here are some examples to get you thinking:

Movies

• Hispano Aviación HA-1112-M1L Buchón playing Bf109 and Hurricane fighters (Battle of Britain)

• The Psychedelic Monster B25 camera aircraft (used in the making of Battle of Britain)

• The aircraft in The Final Countdown

• North American T-6 Texan as Mitsubishi A6M Zero and Nakajima B5N aircraft (Tora! Tora! Tora!)

• M47 tank playing a King Tiger (Patton)

• Oddball’s Sherman Tank (Kelly’s Heroes)

• Tiger I modified from a T-34 (Kelly’s Heroes)

• ECTO1 (Ghostbusters)

• M3 Lee tank (Sahara)

• Max’s V8 Interceptor (Mad Max)

• Han Solo’s DL-44 blaster, based on the Mauser C96 broomhandle pistol (Star Wars)

• Moe, Larry and Curly (The Three Stooges figures from Polar Lights)

• Rick (Casablanca bust from Andrea Miniatures)

Page 14: ScaleACTION - WordPress.com · ScaleACTION President’s Report P1 From the Editor P2 Treasurer’s Waffle P2 ... (compared to 110 for 2016-17). Of more importance was the high overall

ACTSMS Page 14

TV

• London Police call box (TARDIS, Doctor Who)

• General Lee (1969 Dodge Charger, Dukes of Hazzard)

• KITT (modified 1982 Pontiac Trans Am, Knight Rider)

• Batmobile, Batcopter and Batcycle (1960s Batman)

What’s NOT eligible for the Scale ACT 19 Grail competition?

Anything that is purely imaginary, not based on a real-life vehicle or item

For example, X-Wing fighters, Star Destroyers and the Starship Enterprise are not eligible for this competition,

these belong in the science fiction/fantasy vehicles judging categories.

Also, models of purely CGI or animated characters are not eligible, these belong in the science fiction/fantasy

figures or Gundam judging categories.

One of the reasons this decision was made was simple – we don’t wish to gut the Science

Fiction/Fantasy/Gundam categories of all their entries!

Competition Conditions

Entries to this competition must meet the following criteria;

• Any model built from a kit, out of the box, modified or scratchbuilt.

• Diecast models or pre-assembled are not eligible.

Should there be any doubt on whether an entry meets these conditions, the Scale ACT Chief Judges’ decision is

final.

Judging Format

Due to the wide variety of subjects that may be entered, it will be very difficult to apply the usual competition

judging format. Instead, the competition will be run as a form of public’s and competitors’ choice.

• Best model as voted by visitors at Scale ACT – This award favours the biggest, brightest and the most

grand-looking models as that’s what the public likes and goes for. The Grail trophy will be awarded to

winner of this section.

ScaleACT 2019 New “Achievement Unlocked ” Category

In September, an announcement was made of the establishment of the inaugural “Achievement Unlocked ”

ScaleACT special competition category. This category is for modellers who have never before entered their

creations into a competition. The aim is to encourage and support people to participate in ScaleACT and to

develop their skills in this hobby.

The rules are very simple:

1. The modeller must not have entered works into any ‘official’ competitions previously (this does NOT include clubs’ People Choice events) and is based on an honour system.

2. Any subject, across any genre, and in any scale will qualify for entry.

As sponsors and organisers of this special category, Ben Winter-Giles and Min Hwang will run with the

coordination of entries and judging of submissions. We believe in growing peoples’ abilities as modellers. As such,

we are offering our time and skills to entrants to guide, teach, and share our experience. If you want, we are more

than happy to help get your models ready for competition – please reach out to us on Facebook Messenger!

As alluded to in the category banner above, we have secured sponsorship of prizes from a number of sources.

First up, we have Richard Osley, through his new shop Akikambara in Tuggeranong, donating a brand-new special

import kit from Japan, a Bandai RG (Real Grade) Exia! This classic kit is one of the better RG kits, rivalling PG kits

for detail without the massive shelf space requirement. Next, Scott Taylor from Scale Modellers Supplies (SMS) is

putting up a starter pack of paint goodness. Scott is the genius behind some wonderful lacquer paints have

become a staple on many a work bench, and SMS has just released their latest new range of nippers which will be

showcased at ScaleACT-19. Peter Shum from Runway 13, our very own local specialist wholesaler of quality

airbrushing and hobby products, has also come to the party, generously offering two special prizes: a Man Wah

hobby craft tools set, and a UStar paint bottle stand – what better way to build up a valuable collection of good

quality tools and keep your paints organised!

And finally, the ACTSMS will be contributing three 1-year memberships to the competition. These memberships

will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. How this will work is if the winner is already a paid-up

member, the free membership will kick in at the next renewal date (around August/September). And if the winner

is not yet a member then he/she will have the option of joining up and paying a pro-rata rate for membership

before the free one kicks in next year, or have it applied immediately.

The Masochists’ Award: The Origins

On the topic of special categories, some may wonder where the Masochists’ Award got its name and how it

originated. As it happens, 2019 is the 10-year anniversary of this award, so what better time to re-tell its story!

It all began at ScaleACT 2009. The venue was the Harmony German Club and a particular model was entered into

the competition by Graeme Carter – a 1/72 model of the Handley Page HP 42 airliner.

It was widely known, and acknowledged, to be one of the most difficult-to-build vacuform kits at the time.

Graeme then took things to the next level by scratchbuilding not just additional exterior detail but also fashioned

a full interior for the airliner. All in all, over 60% of what you see in the photo above was scratchbuilt!

This entry made quite the impression on Peter Shum from Runway 13 and Peter Mahoney from Hawkeye Models.

Unfortunately, the model placed second in its category due to a few minor technical flaws. Being amazed (and not

a little envious!) of the build, both Peters were not having Graeme walk away empty handed from the

competition. Runway 13 donated an airbrush as a prize and Graeme Carter thus became the first winner of the

then inaugural Masochists’ Award.

Much more detail and information on Graeme’s build of his vacuformed Handley Page HP 42 airliner are available

at the following link: http://www.internetmodeler.com/scalemodels/aviation/Building_the_Contrail_HP_42.php

This year, ScaleACT-19 honours the 10th anniversary of the Masochists’

Award, with Runway 13 again sponsoring a major prize for the category.

The event organising committee has also arranged for a special trophy for

the winner. This trophy will feature “The Thinker” as a centrepiece – an

apt reference to why in the world any sane person would even think of

inflicting such pain on themselves!

ScaleACT 2019 Themed Displays

We have a number of themed model displays planned for ScaleACT 2019:

• Aircraft of the Rhodesian Airforce (organised by Michael Cooper – he was a FAC pilot in the Rhodesian

Airforce hence his interest)

• Cruise Ships (organised by John Purcell)

• “75th Anniversary of 1944” (organised by Mike Grieve)

• Gundam

• ScaleACT-18 Competition Winners

Please have a think about the above and consider if there’s something that you want to build in the near future

that you can put towards a display, or if you already have something appropriate on your modelling shelf. Please

contact the display organiser if there’s anything to can add.

Further, we’re planning a “Past Winners” display of models that have received awards at previous ScaleACT

events. If you’ve won a judging category or special award, we’d like to see your model again!

Alternatively, if you have an idea for a great themed display that you and your comrades would like to create –

no, it doesn’t have to be related to an anniversary – please let Mike Grieve ([email protected]) know ASAP.
