A Ping-Pong Ball in a Hole

Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe imbedded in concrete one foot deep. How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe-laces, and your 1ltr. plastic water bottle, which does not fit into the pipe?

In an effort to tap the growing potential in the Power sector, Era Buildsys has forayed

into this burgeoning space with the inception of its new plant at Nagpur. The Nagpur plant

has double the capacity of the company’s other plant at Pantnagar.

The company’s foray into the Power sector, which marks a significant diversification of its customer portfolio, makes it

the first PEB company in the country in the Power Plant project space.

The company’s decision to alter its business profile to enter into this niche area was motivated

by the Power sector scenario prevailing in the country. The Indian Power sector had installed

capacity of only 1,362 MW in 1947, which has since crossed the 100,000 MW mark, making

India the sixth largest producer and consumer of electricity in the world.

However, despite this major achievement, India continues to suffer from huge gaps in supply

and demand. To bridge this gap, the Government of India has allowed 100% FDI in the Power

sector (except Nuclear Power). This has encouraged various private sector companies, including

MNCs, to foray into the Indian Power sector. The scenario indicates that a large number of Power

Plants would be set up in India in the coming years.

Era Buildsys initiated the move to enter this segment after extensive research to determine the

needs of this sector and after analyzing how it can meet the same. The company concluded that

the key was in the alteration of its business process, especially in Production. Following its foray

into Power, the company will, in fact, be producing something that is very targeted and similar

to its existing product.

This strategic move by Era Buildsys Ltd. is aimed at catering to the needs of Power plant

companies which are on an expansion spree in India. Entry into this particular market segment

for an industrial firm requires much greater commitment than any of its existing customers as

Supply and Erection for Power plants require greater internal capability and commitment.

Era Buildsys has extensively prepared itself for the same with inception of its new plant at Nagpur.

The Nagpur plant is equipped with all the latest technology machines, which have been imported

from Middle East, China & Europe, with sufficient manpower and proper planning to foray into

this new segment.

Let’s Talk

Can you share with us on a macro level, the importance of Information Technology to an infrastructure-centric group like Era?

ERA being an infrastructure centric group having backward and forward integration for the construction is characterized by a level of fragmentation that is unparalleled in any other economic sector. Fragmentation gives rise to communication/coordination breakdown across project phases, disciplines, and subsystems. These problems influence project performance, profitability, productivity and competitiveness throughout the industry.

IT holds a lot of potential and importance for the ERA Group because its purpose is to facilitate the exchange and management of information. Information plays two vital roles in all infrastructure projects:

1. Specifies the resulting product (design Information) and it initiates and

2. Controls the activities required for constructing the project (management Information).

Information is such an essential component of construction activities that the evolution of information technology (IT) has a profound impact on how organizations in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) industry operate. Indeed, ERA is currently experiencing a paradigm shift from traditional paper-based to digitally based information exchange. Being highly fragmented, the ERA Group has the potential to greatly benefit from IT because information is the driver of the project activities during all the phases of the project life cycle.

The drastic reduction in computer prices and the increased power, usefulness and popularity of computers over the last few years have made IT more ubiquitous within the industry.

How evolved are the IT systems and processes in Era and how have they helped the Group enhance overall efficiencies? Planning ahead what lies new for the future?

As the organization grew, the IT Systems also evolved step by step from the standalone systems to In-house ERP, centralized messaging and collaboration system, Outsourced CRM and intranet application.

It was the late nineties when our visionary Chairman, Mr. Bharana prepared a roadmap of system integration and its implementation through IT. Further a decision to develop in-house ERP was taken as a

CaCInflik

major evolutionary decision. The decision of in-house development took place as there was no true ERP available at that time covering the activities and functions of the construction industry. The ERP at ERA attempts to integrate all different departments and functions across the company onto a single system (integrated software program that runs off a single database) so that the various departments can more easily share information and communicate with each other. This integrated approach has a tremendous payback in terms of information availability and faster decision making process to achieve time and cost effectiveness.

In its very first phase of implementation of ERP and the Mailing System [era mail], we started experiencing dramatic gains in terms of information availability and quality, better inventory and centralized financial control. We started commercial modules of ERP at sites. The reporting cycle time reduced from more than 30 days to a week initially and finally a day. To achieve the timely implementation a distributed approach was adapted in which site level workings were completed in offline ERP system and sent to HO and vice-versa with the help of import and export process and internet. This has made the decision making process faster.

The 2nd phase of implementation was to setup a datacenter to consolidate the servers, data storage and processing with 24X7 availability and finally to have company’s intranet the ERANET so that employees could have easy access to the information anytime and anywhere. This was introduced with HR functions to reduce the paperwork and to automate the workflow.

In the mean time the need of for robust and real-time decision making system was felt. Hence we are planning to have web based portal very soon where all the stakeholders of the organization can transact and information will be available in real-time to enable the real-time decision making possible. We are also planning to introduce time based workflow processing which shall ensure that the decisions are taken within time limit and procedures are maintained.

Every department faces myriad challenges in its journey of instituting new practices. What have been some of the biggest challenges faced by your department and how were the same successfully mitigated or tackled?

Yes, we have also faced challenges as we had to drive the transition from typically manual and traditional systems to IT based systems. Resistance to the change at times comes from people whose jobs rely primarily on skilled construction work; information sharing is not

on their priority list and in our industry root of information is from there itself. The another big challenge is the Change Management as a result of fundamental redesign and frequent business process reengineering.

At departmental level, one of the major issues is the turnover of the quality and trained manpower which affects the IT based system development and implementation process. This is being mitigated by hybrid team setup [experienced and trainees] and module / functional rotation policy. This results into temporary replacement of team members by each other.

Secondly, challenges lie in the increasing works pressure, service demand and change management as result of the exponential growth and diversification of the business in the organization. To ensure the speedy resolution of issues we came up with ERP Helpdesk for routine support to sites and HO. We also started weekly training programs to spread awareness and to tackle change management. There were several instances where the team was under pressure and needed the motivation to go ahead with its one line approach of “Just Do It”. In every odd condition it’s our Chairman who came forward, guided us to proceed further, sometimes like an IT Guru and sometime like a management Guru and several time leading from the front.

From organizational point of view, in initial days, the biggest challenge was to get the acceptability of computers and ERP System within the organization. When we introduced “desktop at every desk” concept along with the ERP System there was a big resistance. We used the management philosophy of grapevine and inspired the users to use computers and internet for their daily work and finally to use the ERP system. In this process Mr. Brijesh Chaprana helped us a lot. He was given the first system with internet at HO, gradually people were curious and they started demanding the desktop and thus began the journey of instituting new practices.

Furthermore, we had to introduce the ERP system at projects. Interestingly, we started with the accounts module, other modules like Purchase and Inventory etc. were introduced gradually. Here the Journey started from “Era Ro Padi” to “Easy Report Processing”. We had to implement the accounts module of ERP at 20 projects within 10 days. The team effort gave us successful result.

What are the broad plans and focus areas for the department going ahead? What is the execution roadmap to achieve them?

Scaling IT capabilities to meet the emerging needs and create new capabilities is a new imperative. In the industry, IT plays a role of catalyst for business growth. In the process of moving towards the global market economy, having great potential of growth, we need to utilize the latest technology and innovative techniques to march ahead of the competitors. Hence it’s time to come up with a robust and centralized infrastructure for the ERAGROUP, which can maximize the IT business value with consolidation, virtualization and automation. Virtual server environment reduces the time, labour and cost of IT operation by providing softwares, servers and storage into an adoptable infrastructure that appears as a single environment to users and dynamically provides capabilities to meet changing business requirements.

We have different team setup for development, implementation and training, infrastructure and facility management. Every team has its own targets in form of long term and short term plan. Presently we are focusing on development and implementation of core business modules, its approval processes and integration with the financials. In parallel, we are also working on the connectivity of projects and head offices to have real-time transaction processing. By end of this financial year most of the projects will be working in online mode. I personally anticipate that from this point of time there shall be major shift in work culture and effectiveness.

In next financial year, we shall take the projects on ERA’s web portal covering different relationship management processes and interactive transactions, data classification, security and disaster recovery management on priority. Also, the portal will be able to

synchronize the master schedule with sub-schedules, especially for complex projects that involve many contractual packages to be advantageous because it will provide access to all the project information 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What New technologies are to be introduced in the near future to increase effectiveness of functioning?

As we are growing year by year we need to scale up our capabilities and the connectivity. The connectivity of the sites is major challenge as our sites are variable in nature, timeline and costing. Presently we have taken decision to connect all our offices using MPLS technology in hybrid mode on the basis of the feasibility. The project has been outsourced to Reliance Communication Ltd and in next 3 months the entire project shall be online. This will enable the IT team to set up the central document management server for storage and retrieval of data, drawings and documents. The advantage of having a central location for drawings, schedules, project documents, and photos will help us to keep accurate control of the project.

Further in 2nd half of the coming financial year we shall be working on the wireless communication. The use of wireless communications and handheld computers could be an effective way to promote an information culture in the organization. The fact that field personnel are always on the run and have to administer multiple documents to track progress and manage changes, will, eventually, bring on a bottom-up need for integrated data. Wireless applications in construction management and facility management could facilitate the transfer of information from sites to office databases.

Era Group has a huge IT Department spread over 4 offices & sites, what steps are being taken to keep the team bonded and motivated?

Motivation literally means ‘Factors within a human being that arouses and directs goal-oriented behavior’. IT being a team with diversified skill & talent but working in a unified manner has its goal-oriented approach that works towards team motivation. In Particular, the there are certain factors that builds our team with truly motivated approach, and they are

Responsibility

In general, people and teams are stimulated by being given responsibility. Having ownership of an identifiable block of work is a long-held tenet of motivation in groups. Teams that have both the responsibility and authority tend to maintain motivation over longer periods of time and result in a sense of ownerships of work with proven quality & standard.

Growth

Personal and team growth can provide another basis for sustained motivation. When people feel they are moving forward, learning new concepts, adding to their skill base, and stretching their minds, motivation tends to remain high. Personal growth adds value to the individual, enhancing self-esteem and self-worth. We, at IT, are working together for all opportunities where we can increase our knowledge and skill by innovating the existing and introducing the new technology that will benefit the end-user, team and company as a whole.

Interpersonal Relationships

One of the ingredients of successful teams is camaraderie, meaning comradeship, fellowship, and loyalty. The people on these teams genuinely like each other and work hard to develop and maintain their relationships. We are always in-process of creating the relationship where we have open and direct communication, frequent praising of each others’ contributions, and mutual support.

A team whose members are aligned with its purpose, feel a challenge in their task, have a strong sense of camaraderie, feel responsibility for the outcome, and experience growth as a team and in their personal lives, will tend to sustain motivation over the long haul.

Today’s construction companies face a variety of risks when they undertake a construction project. Not only must owners / Construction companies be concerned with potential risks to their employees, labours or property, but they must also be concerned about the risks that the contractor bears. Safety is a critical item on all construction projects for multiple reasons including protecting the welfare of employees, providing a safe work environment and controlling construction costs.

However, the importance of safety as a cost controlling measure is often overlooked by construction companies and contractors. As a means of reducing the risks associated with construction, safety can significantly impact the overall cost. A dedicated commitment to safety by both the construction companies and contractor helps ensure project success and can impact the bottom-line considerably.

How can safety work for the construction companies?Contrary to common perception, there is little up-front cost to the Construction companies for implementing and maintaining the safety programs required since the contractor is already mandated by law to comply with local, state and federal regulations. To take advantage of this safety benefit, all the owner has to do is demand that the contractor document and implement the proper safety programs that will protect employees working on the job site.

To avoid the high dollar losses caused by injuries, contractors are required to implement various safety procedures like fall protection, hazcom, respiratory protection, confined space entry, competent person and other programs that control the causes of injuries. If the contractor is successful in preventing these injuries, overhead costs of insurance and hidden costs of accidents are significantly reduced, bringing more profit dollars back to the contractor. Hidden costs of an accident are four to 10 times the actual costs of the claim and account for items such as employee replacement costs, loss of use, increased insurance costs, damaged product, etc. The claim only includes items such as doctors, ambulance, indemnity, as well as prescription and medication costs.

How construction companies can work with the contractor?Construction companies sometimes hesitate and feel that they are interfering with the contractor’s way of doing business if they express concerns over safety at a jobsite. In reality, owners have the absolute right to mandate that a good quality safety program is an important part of the selected contractor’s culture. The contract documents are a very effective tool in conveying the owner’s / Construction Company’s safety requirements to the contractor.

In addition, there are many benefits to pre-qualifying a contractor by comparing the firm’s safety record and other company statistics with the competition. A contractor with a good safety program is often a better choice even if the initial bid package is higher than the firm’s competitors. Poor safety compliance increases the owner’s risks and often inflates the final costs of a completed contract, and it is the final costs that need to be factored into this decision making process.

How a Safety Program controls the owner’s risksThe process of preventing employee injuries and illnesses itself makes the contractor more efficient and effective with projects. The pressure to cut corners, skimp on materials, reduce quality, or rush to get the project completed is significantly reduced through compliance to a good, jobsite safety program. There are many components of a good safety program, depending on the type of project that is undertaken. To be effective, most programs should have the following components:

Pre-project Planning (PPP) is the simple process of getting the leadership team together to discuss how the project will be carried out in accordance with the contract. Every phase of the project and corresponding tasks are examined including project overview and contracts, internal organization, schedule management, task planning, resource management, material/supplies, cost management, budget/production, cash flow management, risk management, safety, subcontractor management and responsible individual list.

Pre-task Planning (PTP) is simply engaging the employees who are going to do the work. Conducting the pre-project planning generates a tremendous amount of critical information. To make the investment work effectively, additional planning sessions with the workforce may need to be completed. This is where the site specific safety program is developed and various types of training programs are selected based on the specific tools, materials, access, tasks and equipment that will be used to build this project. Further, this planning sets the expectations for the whole job. The owner / Construction companies are typically invited to participate with this process and often contribute critical information directly to the people who will do the work.

Setting and Monitoring Safety Goals for the project is really directed at how well safety is actively controlled on the project. This is usually completed in two ways: measuring results and measuring activities.

Unfortunately, these BOCWR measurements are after-the-fact and are not as effective as they could be since they are reactive. A more effective measurement would be to monitor safety activities that have been put in place to prevent injuries. Participation in the morning Job Safety Analysis (JSA), conducting Manager Safety Audits (MSA), keeping up with the Assured Grounding program or some other safety function will work for this type of measurement.

Claims Management Programs, which include detailed management directives, drug testing and return to work procedures are an

Employee training can effectively convey management’s safety expectations.

WHY CONSTRUCTION SAFETY IS IMPORTANT

Mr. RajendraKandpal

excellent indication of the contractor’s safety culture. Having a clear motto like “Treat first and ask questions later” is an insight into how the contractor works with employees and their workers’ compensation claims.

Accountability, Responsibility and Authority for safetyIn order to develop a safety culture, the contractor must first hold employees responsible and accountable for safety. This means that all employees, not just a select group, have their annual compensation measured and indexed to the success of the company to meet its safety goals.

In addition, the annual review process should have a safety component that the contractor’s employees can be measured against. Any merit, wage or salary increases should be heavily weighted on the employee’s ability to meet these specific safety measurements, which could include the BOCWR Recordable Frequency rates or some other proactive, measurable safety activity or criteria that can be applied to this process.

Formal Safety Program with a Working Field Safety ManualA good safety program requires written procedures, specifications and engineering that documents safety requirements and details how employees will work to a specific standard of safety. This program should also be behavior-based since it has been shown that approximately 96 percent of all hazards are related to the unsafe acts of people while only 4 percent are due to unsafe conditions.

Unfortunately, there are many companies that produce safety manuals that are designed to only meet BOCWR requirements and don’t consider all the necessary elements of a safety program. Equally problematic, many contractors simply purchase these safety manuals and never intend to use them in the field.

Safety Training ProgramSafety training is often a good measure of a Companies employees & contractor’s ability to establish and maintain a safety program. The willingness of management to spend the time and money it takes to do the training upfront reflects the importance safety is given in the work that is going to occur.

In order to improve comprehension, it is better to give demonstrations that allow the employees to participate in the process. There are four general steps for training to be successful.

1) Prepare the employee for the work he/she is about to perform.

2) Present the job through demonstration and detailed explanations.

3) Involve the employee with actual hands-on experience.

4) Follow-up by letting the employee do the work while still being available for questions and feed back as to the safety and quality of the work.

Once focused on safety requirements, the crew becomes more productive, efficient, effective, safer and aware of the risks associated with the jobsite. This in turn makes the contractor more profitable and able to meet the cost, production and safety expectations of the owner.

How to find a contractor with a good safety cultureThe best way for an owner / Construction companies to become involved in the process and locate contractors with good safety programs is to implement a pre-qualification or screening process. This is accomplished by looking at the contractor’s past safety history (experience modification rate). Review the following for the past three years: BOCWR Recordable Rates, Lost Work Day Case Rate, and the Lost Work Day Rate. Also be sure to review the contractor’s current safety history and obtain references from past clients.

The bottom lineIn order to reduce overall construction costs, decrease the time for completion and improve the quality of the job, owners have learned that it is important to take an active role in the contractor’s safety and training programs. Examining the contractor’s current and past safety performance history allows an owner to see how successful the contractor has truly been with their safety and health programs.

A safe contractor wins because he/she understands safety effects the successful completion of the contract and adds to bottom-line profits. Insured losses as well as the hidden costs of accidents are significantly reduced, which also continues to add to the bottom-line. The added bonus is a reduction in the contractor’s worker’s compensation, auto and general liability premium rates charged by the firm’s insurance carrier. The owner / Construction companies wins because his/her involvement helps to promote quality workmanship, prevent third-party lawsuits, and reduce general liability and property damage claims that would otherwise inflate the overall costs of the contract.

Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. It won’t matter where you came from, or on what side of the tracks you lived, at the end. It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.

What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you gave. What will matter is not your success, but your significance.

What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence, but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone. What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.

They say that few men have power to write the history. Really they have. Paths of glory have been trodden by only few men. To travel on the path of glory requires not only a extraordinary courage but also extraordinary heroism.

One of the legend that has never ever disappeared is the legend of the King Leonidas. The brave king of Sparta and his fellow soldiers. This was the time when wars were frequent and the Greek city states were at war with each other. One of the few powerful ones were states like Sparta & Athens.

This story is about a war fought between Greek city states and the mighty Empire of Persia. The Battle of Thermopylae took place over three days during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the pass of Thermopylae (‘The Hot Gates’). It was fought between an alliance of Greek City States, led by Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes 1. The Persian

invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle at Marathon. Xerxes had amassed a huge army and navy, and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the Allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium.

An Allied force of approximately 7,000 men thus marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered in the millions, arrived at the pass in late August or early September. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held up the Persians for seven days in total (including three of battle), before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history’s most famous LAST STAND. During two full days of battle, the small force led by King Leonidas 1 of Sparta blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a small path that led behind the Greek lines. Aware that they were being outflanked, Leonidas dismissed the bulk of the Greek army, and remained to guard the rear with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others, the vast majority of whom were killed.

After this engagement, the Allied navy at Artemisium received news of the defeat at Thermopylae. Since their strategy required both Thermopylae and Artemisium to be held, and given their losses, the Allied navy decided to withdraw to Salamis. The Persians overran Boeotia and then captured the now-evacuated Athens. However, seeking a decisive victory over the Persian fleet, the Allied Greek fleet attacked and defeated the invaders at the Battle of Salamis in late 480 BC. Fearing to be trapped in Europe, Xerxes withdrew with much of his army to Asia, leaving Mardonius to complete the conquest of Greece. The following year, however, saw an Allied army decisively defeat the Persians at the Battle of Plataea, thereby ending the Persian invasion.

This small battle tells us about the bravery of few hundred men. They fought till there last breath. Both ancient and modern writers have used the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of the power of a patriotic army of freemen defending native soil.

Strangers go tell the Spartans

That we lie here

True even to the death

To our Spartan way of life

- J. Rufus Fears

Remember one thing life will bring us to the places that will be unknown where your decision will fail, where you will be on the verge of breaking but remember one thing HAVE FAITH IN YOURSELVES. Never break. JUST GO ON. Remember the Spartans, Remember their Bravery. Contributed by – Mr. Aditya Vikram Computer Operator

Love your enemies, do good to those

who hate you, bless those who curse

you, and pray for those who ill-treat you. If anyone hits you on one

cheek let him hit the other one. If someone takes your coat let him

have your shirt as well.

If your brother sins, rebuke him and if he repents, forgive him.

If he sins against you seven times in one day, and each time he

comes to you saying, I repent, you must forgive him.

How can you say to your brother, please brother, let me take the

speck out of your eye’ yet cannot even see the log in your own

eye. First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will be

able to see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

Those who are now last will be first, and those who are now first

will be last.

Do for others just what you want them to do for you.

If you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you could say to a

mulberry tree ‘Pull yourself in the sea!’ And it would obey you.

There is nothing that goes into a person from the outside which

can make him ritually unclean, rather, it is what comes out of

a person (from heart) that makes

him unclean.

The greatest one among you must

will be humbled, and whoever

humbles himself will be made

great.

A good person brings good out of

the treasure of good things in his heart; a bad person brings bad

out of his treasure of bad things. For the mouth speaks what the

heart is full of.

Do not judge others, and God will not judge you, do not

condemn others and God will not condemn you. Forgive others

and God will forgive you, give to others, and God will give to

you.

Jesus said I am the good shepherd, who is willing to die for the

sheep.

Whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child will

never enter it.

The servant does not deserve thanks for obeying orders, does

he? It is the same with you; when you have done all you have

been told to do, say, ‘we are ordinary servants; we have only

done our duty’.

You cannot serve both God and Money.

The Heaven & Earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

People love everything about Christmas Day - the nativity scene, caroling, scripture reading & concerts. November onwards, it is impossible to forget that Christmas is coming. Colored lights decorate many town centres and shops, along with shiny decorations & artificial snow painted on shop windows. During the season people take the time to enjoy the city or town when it’s all decorated

The Tradition of Christmas: The tradition of Christmas have combined from over half a dozen cultures and accumulated over the

centuries. No matter which part of the world you are in, the tradition of Christmas blossoms with fun & celebration and carries along with it

faith, hope and love.

Celebrating Christmas: Celebrating Christmas has nothing to with spending a lot of money and having elaborate parties. The biggest

celebrations are the most personal ones spent with people whose company we love. A simple thing as watching a beautiful Christmas movie

with special someone can be all it takes or may be share a home cooked meal with friends in front of the decorated Christmas tree.

Christmas Meal: On Christmas day a special dishes is usually served for which there are traditional menus in each country. In the United

Kingdom, the traditional meal consists of roast turkey or goose, served with roast potatoes and other vegetables, followed by Christmas

pudding, a heavy boiled pudding made with dried fruits & flour.

Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual holiday celebrated on

December 25 that commemorates the birth of Nazareth. The date of

commemoration is not known to be Jesus’ actual birthday, and may

have initially been chosen to correspond with either a historical Roman

festival or the winter solstice. Christmas is central to the Christmas

and holiday season, and in Christianity marks the beginning of the

larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days.

Although nominally a Christian holiday, Christmas is widely celebrated

by many non-Christians, and many of its popular celebratory

customs have pre-Christian or secular themes and origins. Popular

modern customs of the

holiday include gift-

giving, an exchange of

greeting cards, church

celebrations, and the

display of various

decorations; including

the Christmas tree,

lights, mistletoe,

nativity scenes, and

holly. In addition,

Father Christmas

(known as Santa Claus

in North America and

Ireland) is a popular

Christmas Galoremythological figure

often associated

with bringing gifts

for children on

Eve, and is usually

incorporated into

the celebrations of

families with young

children.

Because gift-giving and several other aspects of Christmas involve

heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-

Christians, the holiday has become a major event for many retailers

and businesses within the past few centuries.

The Christmas tree is a decorated Artificial Christmas tree, natural

Christmas tree or Prelit Tree, a popular tradition associated with the

celebration of Christmas. Normally an evergreen coniferous tree that

is brought into a home or used in the open, a Christmas tree is

decorated with Christmas lights and colorful ornaments during the

days around Christmas. An angel or star is often placed at the top

of the tree, representing the host of angels or the Star of Bethlehem

from the Nativity story.
