For power system operators looking for power surety, stability, lower emissions, and the lowest cost of operations, the Innovus Power Hybrid System equipped with GridGenius is essential for today’s hybrid microgrids. GridGenius enables generator sets, solar and wind power, energy storage, and loads to be easily integrated into a single efficient, optimized microgrid. GridGenius automatically determines the most economical dispatch of system assets to meet both load demand and stability requirements. This allows Innovus Power to deliver the most scalable and efficient microgrid power systems available with the lowest Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE).
OverviewWith rare exception, islanded hybrid microgrid systems today deploy fixed speed generators (FSGs) as their dispatchable power source and integrate the FSG with renewable energy sources supporting that microgrid.
A FSG based islanded hybrid microgrid is typically not able to support above 50% peak load renewable penetration because of stability issues. The FSGs in these systems have a difficult time keeping up with the rapid changes in the renewable output that can destabilize the microgrid. To address this issue, curtailment schemes or costly energy storage and associated power management components are added and operators see LCOE go up. At some point, the unfavorable LCOE impact of stabilizing the Microgrid overtakes the positive LCOE impact of increasing penetration of renewables.
At higher renewable penetration levels, another major barrier arises. FSGs cannot run consistently below 30% load because of both transient response requirements and increased maintenance cost due to wet-stacking and coking. In such a low load condition, the FSG will
burn significantly more fuel per kWh and has higher emissions. Additionally, the FSG cannot be turned off and must run at its minimum load even when it is not needed. This is because the FSG can’t restart quickly enough to respond to renewable transients.
The Innovus Hybrid Power System replaces the FSG with our Variable Speed Generator (VSG) and hybrid platform control system, GridGenius. With the addition of the Innovus PowerBridge, our energy buffer and dispatchable load option, we solve all of today’s hybrid microgrid problems with one integrated, cost effective package. Now, the microgrid is stable at any renewable penetration level. Hybrid system operators can have power certainty while leveraging the full benefits of solar and wind in their microgrid systems. When renewable power is unavailable, the Innovus Hybrid Power System will burn less fuel at any demand load versus a FSG. The results for operators is dramatically lower cost of energy, lower emissions, higher power reliability, and a hedge against the uncertainty of future costs in fossil fuels.
Whether our generator set is producing 100% of the power or leveraging renewables, the Innovus LCOE beats all competitors

Technical Capability Description
The Innovus Hybrid Power System with PowerBridge and GridGenius is completely stable at any renewable penetration level. Our power converter and proprietary controls will always hold power frequency constant during any transient. In contrast, rapid fluctuations of the renewable availability will cause variation in output frequencies in FSG based hybrid microgrids. This leads to microgrid instability and is the primary reason why renewable penetration in FSG based systems is limited to 40-50% of peak power.
With the Innovus Hybrid Power System with GridGenius and PowerBridge, the generator follows the net load requirement down to zero and can be turned off when the renewables meet the load demand. PowerBridge effectively manages all transients at any load and provides virtual spinning reserve allowing the generator time to restart from off when needed. As a result, no fuel is wasted!
The Innovus Hybrid Power System with PowerBridge and GridGenius significantly increases the stable penetration of renewable generation, provides superior low load efficiency, and eliminates unnecessary fuel burn yielding a dramatic improvement in system LCOE.
