    Scaffold needs diagrams!

    Spread YourWork

Do you have an original model

sitting on your desk? Have youtaught it to some friends? Maybeput it on a website? Well, Scaffoldwants to help you spread yourwork to more of the origamicommunity. Scaffold will print anysubmitted diagrams.

    Doodle Paper

Origami doodling is what I can theprocess of designing withoutspecific intent. I just fold ratherrandomly until, like looking forshapes in the clouds, I get aglimmer. I then begin folding withintent. When doodling, I generallydo not use true origami paper.Instead I use what I think of asdoodle paper.

In general, doodle papertends to be a bit heavy. I find thisuseful as I abandon folds in adoodle. The stiffer paper allows a

in a shirt pocket or tucked into thebook I am reading. But Isometimes use larger paper formore complex doodles. Mycurrent favorite being obsoleteletterhead that has been trimmedinto an 8 -square. The letterheadI come across has a high fibercontent which helps prevent tearing

    from overuse.I am currently creating

several models a day when I havedoodle paper handy. I just grab asheet and let my fingers do thefolding. Next thing I know, thereare a pelican and a giraffe in mypocket.

    New Books

Just as the July 2001 issue wasgoing out, my copy of JeremyShafers new book arrived. A weeklater, a trip to Boston allowed avisit to the Sausuga Bookstorewhere I found several more books. These new additions are asfollows.ORIGAMI TO ASTONISH ANDAMUSE by Jeremy Shafer

    Astonish andAmuse

Few books seem to have createdthe same anticipation as JeremyShafers ORIGAMI TO ASTONISHAND AMUSE. After countlessdelays by the publisher, it finallywas released last month. It was

everything I had hoped for.Upon the arrival of thebook, I had to take the time toexamine it carefully. Ninety-plusmodels are diagramed (with twohidden in the beginning). My firstimpression was about the pagelayout. This is not typical of mostEnglish origami books. Jeremymakes fine use of the written wordwith detailed explanations, anecdotes, and notes about how aparticular model was created. As

a designer, I was very pleased. The models in the book

range from traditional ideas like acrab and a dragon, to thecompletely bizarre, like theClogged Artery. Some models aremonochromatic while others makefull use of both sides of the paper. Some models are simple, like the

    The Models

This month I have some modelsthat I designed out of what I later

began to think of as a three-sidedbird base. Chicago Area OrigamiSociety member Hisa Amimotohas submitted her first originalmodel.

    Hummingbird

This Birds of the Sungod was thefirst model designed by HisaAmimoto of the Chicago AreaOrigami Society, back in 1991. Itwas originally to be included in anissue of Manifold but there were no

diagrams, just a series of stepfolds, and I stopped being theeditor before the diagrams werefinished. Hisa has graciouslyallowed its appearance here.

    Simple Lobster

Back in the late 1980s while I was

Crane in the last issue, was one ofthe numerous models I createdafter encountering SamuelRandletts Parrot in THE ART OFORIGAMI. A previous set ofdiagrams for this model appeared

in the 1991 ANNUAL COLLECTIONput out by The Friends of TheOrigami Center of America (nowOrigami USA).

    $ Fish

I call this the Simple $ Fish but ithas a complex move. I developedthis while performing a job that hadthousands of checks arriving in theoffice. Many of these checks wereaccompanied by stubs that weredollar-sized. After a little doodling,

I came across the move thatmakes the tail. Its easy if you seeit in motion, but diagraming it wasa bit of a challenge. If you canmanage the tail, there are onlythree more steps (hence Simple).
