The SCA brand

Volvo Ocean RaceA symbolic journey with the brand in focus

A part of SCA’s work to strengthen brand awareness is its participation in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. This global yachting race is a unique platform to increase awareness of SCA and it’s product brands. SCA will participate in the world’s toughest ocean race with an all-female crew. For SCA the competition is about co-operation and striving towards common goals with a clear strategy. The Group also makes it possible for women to participate in an arena normally reserved for men. It is also about mastering the unexpected and facing the future as a strong team.

One of SCA’s sustainability ambitions is to support women’s rights to live their lives on their own terms, which is one of the reasons why the Group has chosen to participate with an all-female crew, in the Volvo Ocean Race.

Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t a new idea to us, or to our parent company SCA. We took initiatives towards social and environmental sustainability long before it became a business trend. In fact, sustainability has been in our genes for generations.

Today we take pride in our ability to meet or surpass globally recognised standards for corporate responsibility within environment, climate change, human rights and vendor standards.

Together with our business partners we strive to reduce environmental impact, and meet social needs in the communities in which we are based.

By choosing Tork products, you are partnering with SCA, who are ranked as one of the world’s most sustainable companies.

For more than 80 years, the social and environmental impact of our business has been guiding our decisions.

The foundation of the SCA group in 1929 led to houses, schools and a whole infrastructure being built for employees.

In the 1950s SCA introduced its first social programmes and in the 1980s a nature conservation

policy was adopted, putting the protection of biodiversity as the first priority.

Sustainability is not new to SCA. We have been taking care for generations – long before it became fashionable to do so.

Sustainability

SCA’s interaction with NATURE is done with respect and concern for the forests of the future, which is why every tree we harvest is replaced with three new ones.

• SCA is Europe’s largest private owner of forest land, which absorbs more CO2 than the total emissions from all our production plants.

• Our 2.6 million hectares of forests are certified according to the demanding FSC and PEFC certified guidelines.

• We preserve specific areas to ensure the birds, insects and animals in our forests have the natural environments they need to flourish.

• Our forests have a net growth of about 1% annually.

Through its extensive Resource Management System (RMS), SCA monitors how the company utilises energy, water, transport activities and raw materials. The data is used for internal control and follow-up of established targets.

SCA works proactively to decrease its climate footprint by reducing its energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases. Continuous work is conducted to reduce the already low levels of oil and coal used in the Group, and to increase the proportion of renewable energy, such as wind power.

We have set ourselves ambitious targets:

Climate & energy• We will reduce CO2 emissions

from fossil fuels and from purchased electricity and heating by 20% by 2020, with 2005 as reference year.

• We will triple our production of biofuels from our forests by 2020, with 2010 as reference year.

• The production of wind power on SCA forest land will increase to 5 TWh by 2020.

Fibre sourcing & biodiversity• We will achieve and maintain

our target of zero fresh fibre-based material from controversial sources, including pulp.

• We will preserve the biodiversity of our forests. A minimum of 5% of our productive forest land will be set aside from forestry in our ecological landscape plans and a further 5% will be set aside as part of our consideration for nature in our managed forests.

Water• We aim to achieve water

sustainability and we will reduce our water usage in water-stressed regions by 10% by 2015, with 2010 as reference year.

• All SCA pulp and paper mills will employ mechanical and biological water treatment plants by 2015.

Innovation in servicesSCA has developed an offset scheme for secure waste - shredded paper is recovered and converted by SCA sites via a partnership with SITA UK.

This partnership between a secure shredding specialist and SCA helps customers turn the confi dential paper material they no longer need into Tork tissue products they do.

ShredSITA offer a secure confi dential paper collection and shredding service to manage secure disposal of confi dential material ensuring compliance with Data Protection Act and other current legislation and standards.

RecycleAll shredded paper is sent for recycling at SCA’s UK mills where it is processed to produce tissue.

Re-useThe tissue is then converted into Tork hygiene paper products for re-use in washrooms, offi ce buildings, food service environments, industrial facilities and healthcare organisations.

Operational efficiency

Offering efficient, customer insight driven solutions is at the heart of what Tork do.Our innovative systems focus on:

• Reducing labour through shortened refill times.

• Reduced consumption meaning less refilling of dispensers.

• Smart packaging designs to make moving consumables safer and quicker.

Cost-in-use is the total cost of hygiene consumable provision and maintenance and is the combination of product cost, maintenance cost, storage cost and amount consumed and wasted. Tork products and systems are carefully designed and evaluated to ensure that product and usage costs deliver the best cost-in-use for our customers – based on the real total cost.

TORK Hand TowelsCompressing hand towels and making longer paper rolls leads to reduced volume, less stock, reduced packaging transports and increased dispenser capacity.

TORK Xpressnap®

With SCA’s Tork Xpressnap® napkin dispensing system, customers are guaranteed at least a 25% reduction in usage compared with traditional dispensers. The system controls consumption, improves hygiene and minimises waste by only dispensing one napkin at a time. SCA introduced the Tork Xpressnap® Signature line with new features.

TORK Easy Handling™

SCA launched Tork Easy Handling™ on a broad front. It is a combination of a Carry Pack® and a Carry Box® – two social innovations for cleaning workers providing several alternatives to lift and carry packs, thus reducing workplace strain.

TORK Foam Soap DispenserAn easy-to-use foam dispenser with low push resistance was launched in 2011. This makes life easier for people with reduced hand strength, due to disabilities or age. The antimicrobial soap is based on alcohol that cleans and sanitises at the same time.

Page 17: SCA and Monthind working together

Risk management

We take a long term view and have risk management strategies in place covering a number of factors, including the supply and management of key raw materials.

In 2012, 50% of SCA’s wood raw material requirements were sourced from the Group’s own forests. The wood fibre is used for SCA’s production of pulp, kraftliner and publication papers, in sawmill operations, and for the manufacture of tissue. Forest waste from SCA’s activities is used in biofuel operations. The energy generated in the production process is used internally or sold. The pulp is subsequently used in the production of mainly tissue, some 37% of the pulp requirement was satisfied by SCA’s own pulp production.

We operate multiple manufacturing sites both within the UK and across other European countries. We deliver high service levels and customer satisfaction and will provide dedicated account management to Monthind.

The provision of a healthy and safe workplace has been assigned high priority at SCA and is in line with the expectations of customers. By having employees who feel safe and are well trained in health and safety procedures, SCA enhances productivity and reduces the number of workplace accidents. Our aim is zero workplace accidents and we will decrease our accident frequency rate by 25% between 2011–2016.
