“Knowing how a culture views death helps us understand many things about the country and its people. Whatever the religion the ri tuals assigned to the dead are ful l of tradition, often going back hundreds of years”. www.ourindia.org

With a population of over a bil l ion people and a country steeped in culture and tradition India has not succeeded in building for her people clean, tranquil and private spaces where they can complete the last ri tes of their loved ones. With the value of land in the metropoli tan cit ies being exorbitant, there are but a handful of spaces for us to honour our dead with dignity.

The architectural challenge is to design a multi - faith eco -friendly funerary center for our Indian cities. I t must balance the built form with open spaces and exude a sense of peace. It must represent the various religions of our country and our culture and traditions and yet have a definite identity. In addition, any town or city within the country should be able to replicate it easily and efficiently and yet retain its sense of place. Express your ideas in a sketch or rendering format with an explanation not exceeding 200 words.
