About The Community Times
Eastern South Carolina’s Largest
African American Footprint
Welcome to The Community Times Newspaper, an African-American weekly with the largest
footprint in Eastern South Carolina. Each week we tell the stories of our community, stories of
success and stories of pain, but always unique stories that make our readers come back week after
week. Our readers know that no one reports the stories of African-American life in the elevencounties that we serve, like The Community Times newspaper, the voice of African-Americans in
Florence, Darlington, Marion, Dillon, Sumter, Lee, Marlboro, Horry, Georgetown, Chesterfield
and Williamsburg Counties for 23 years.
We believe that our readers deserve news that is relevant to their lives. The Community Times
Newspaper has been able to attract and keep readers across all social and economic levels. Reader-
ship of The Community Times starts with young readers around 17, who find our newspapers in
their homes because their parents have been and continue to be readers of our newspaper. Yes,
readership of The Community Times is a family tradition, a tradition like the Black churches,
Black colleges and Black Fraternities.
We, at The Community Times Newspaper don’t take tradition lightly. We believe that we must
work every day to keep and grow our readership and we do so by being the go-to source for stories
on new leadership and new programs while we continue to report on traditional leaders and pro-
grams. Our coverage of the African-American community doesn’t stop with the Black churches,
politics or the many organizations that are under our umbrella. Our coverage is on all aspects of
the community; coverage that includes award-winning stories on education, healthcare, and busi-
ness written by some of the best local writers in the nation.
But there can be no large footprint without a great distribution system and The Community
Times has mastered a diverse system that now includes the traditional church network, with
African-American churches buying our newspapers in bulk. A state of the art system that includes
outdoor newsstands and retail distribution through local convenient stores, restaurants, grocery
stores and major retailers. The Community Times can now be found in Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Pig-
gly Wiggly, IGA, Dollar General, and Bi-Lo stores each week.
The Community Times is online in two different locations. First as a free-standing E-edition
with a weekly update that gives our readers home access to the newspaper which includes our ad-
vertising, every Thursday morning at www.thecommunitytimes.net. The second opportunity to ac-
cess The Community Times is offered through the largest African-American web portal in South
Carolina, www.scvillagevoices.com, a company owned website that covers the state of South Car-
olina’s African-American community with daily news updates and video network.
Let us put the largest African-American footprint in South Carolina to work
for you and your organization. Call us today for a proposal of your next media
buy, because not only is our footprint large, it’s very cost effective.

About Our Readership Study
DBS Communications interviewed 562 readers in the 11 county primary market areas that make up
our market in South Carolina. Our goal was to identify who our readers are, their level of readership and
the role our newspapers play in their purchasing decisions. The population studied consisted of adults age18 and over, living in households within the survey area. Within this area, each household and each adult
within the household had a known (or “non-zero”) probability of being selected for the sample. Interviews
were conducted with residents living and working in the two SMA served by The Community Times and
The Times Upstate newspapers. The readership study took place throughout the month of October 2010
between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Initial interview attempts were spread evenly across all sur-
vey days (i.e., Monday through Saturday). A minimum of 562 completed interviews are required with no
more than one interview per household. Interview Procedures: To ensure the highest degree of compara-
bility and to facilitate the survey process, a standard, consistent, specified list of interview questions were
asked. Interviews were conducted by the research department at DBS Communications with supervision,
interview training, and monitoring capabilities. Interviews were conducted over a minimum period of four weeks to minimize the impact of weather and/or special news stories. Every effort was made to ensure that
interviews were assigned randomly by day and that an approximately equal number of interviews were
completed on each interviewing day. Where appropriate, data was balanced and/or weighted by ZIP code
using up-to-date known demographics: gender, age, number of adults in household and ethnicity in those
cases where one minority comprised no less than ten percent of the total population. Non-responses to any
single question were eliminated from the survey. In all cases, at least six attempts were made to contact
all pre-designated respondents. The telephone rang a minimum of six times each time a number was di-
aled before the attempt was classified as a “no answer.” Each number was dialed at different times and, as
necessary, on different days. Every effort was made to surmount language, cultural, behavioral and other
barriers to a successful interview; and to the extent feasible, callbacks were scheduled on a random basis. At least one callback attempt per respondent was made on a weekend. During the interview process, no
questions were asked prior to the newspaper readership question, with the exception of a qualifying ques-
tion designed to determine the zip code of recipient residence; and a general warm-up call explanation de-
signed to put the respondent at ease. Warm-up questions did not include any reference to the publication
itself or the nature of the study. This study followed recommended guidelines developed in part from the
Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) newspaper readership guidelines. Survey totals may not equal
100% due to rounding. DBS Communications estimates that all the information in this survey has a max-
imum error margin of +/- 4.5 at the 95% confidence level. *0 Survey respondents were interviewed dur-
ing the verification of home delivery and mail distribution. 562 Survey respondents reported reading a
minimum of one of the last four issues through single copy, controlled bulk, or pass along distribution.
