SBA Awards Banquet
Dr. Loren Hamel was the
speaker for our annual School
of Business Administration
Awards Banquet in April.
The SBA banquet is an annual
event during which awards
such as “Most Outstanding
Student of the Year” and
“Teacher of the Year” are
awarded to certain business
students and professors.
The banquet, hosted by the
SBA Student Advisory Council,
was held in Chan Shun Hall
this year. Guests enjoyed a
delicious Italian Buffet, played
a guessing game trying to
f i g u r e o u t t h e
accomplishments of SBA
faculty members, and listened
to an excellent motivational
talk by Dr. Loren Hamel, who
is the CEO of Lakeland
Regional Health System.
Austria, Germany & Czech Republic Tour
Cobblestone streets. Castles. KTM
motorcycles. Bavarian Alps. Spanish
Riding Show. Vienna Expat Center.
Mirabell Gardens. What do these
have in common? All were visited
by seven students and three
faculty/staff during our SBA Study
Tour!
We arrived in Austria on May 6—jetlagged, but
excited to explore the streets and scenes of
Vienna. Vienna is the capital of Austria and
home to 50,000 companies. Over the next four
weeks, we toured various companies across
Austria: the Vienna Expat Center, Optimo (an
impressive debt-free leading mattress company
with 32 million in turnover), Hagleitna
production center (commercial cleaning
supplies), and KTM motorcycles’ headquarters
and assembly plant.
Students not only earned 6 credits toward their business
degrees during the two weeks we spent at Bogenhofen
Adventist Seminary near Braunau am Inn, Austria, but
also learned Austrian culture, made new friends, and
even learned a few German phrases!
In addition to the business visits, we spent time
sightseeing around Austria, Germany, and the Czech
Republic. Highlights included Burghausen (the longest
fortress in Europe) the Eagle’s Nest (Hitler’s former
retreat, high in the Bavarian Alps), Mozart’s Birthplace in
Salzburg, Cesky Krumlov (UNESCO World Heritage
Sight), Prague Castle and Old Town Square, and many
more amazing sights. We hope you will join us on our
next study tour!

Job Pursuit Career Fair
Megan Reed shares her experience at
the Job Pursuit Career Fair, which
eventually landed her a marketing
internship at Atlas Oil Company, an
Inc. 5000 company .
Minute-to-Win-It Game Night
The School of Business
Administration held our
second Minute-to-Win-It
game night on a Saturday
night in late March.
This year’s event differed in
that it was a team event!
Groups of 4-6 students
rotated between tables in
the Student Rec Center,
electing a team member to
complete the task at hand,
whether it was balancing
golf balls on top of each
other or flipping Oreos into
their mouths from their
forehead. The free pizza
was a popular item, as were
the group games such as
the balloon stomping game.
The SBA looks forward to
hos t i ng many more
successful events in the
future!
Five students from Andrews
University attended the Job
Pursuit Career Fair on
February 18 in Lansing, MI,
for which AU provided
transportation.
Laura: Megan, how did you hear
about the Job Pursuit Fair?
Megan: I first heard about it
from emails that the SBA sent
out. I was seeking an internship
for the summer, and thought this
would be a good opportunity to
meet potential employers.
Laura: What was your strategy
for connecting with companies?
Megan: I came with the mindset
of talking to as many people as
possible. Even if they aren’t with
the exact industry or position
you’re interested in, they still
may be able to connect you with
someone else.
Megan (cont.): I spoke with
Target, Quicken Loans,
Valassis, Speedway, Federal
Mogul. Even if I wasn’t
interested in the positions
they were offering, it was
great conversation and
excellent networking. Target,
for example, was offering
management positions, but I
was told to directly email the
r e c r u i t e r f o r f u t u r e
opportunities in my field of
marketing.
Laura: Several companies
selected you for interviews in
the afternoon or upcoming
days, correct?
Megan: Yes—Coca Cola,
Chicago Apartment Finders,
Valassis, Target, Charles Koch
Institute, and Atlas Oil
Company all wanted to
interview me.
Laura: How did you prepare for
each interview in the afternoon?
Megan: I tried to be myself. I
wasn’t prepared for all those
companies, so scrambled at my
computer researching the
companies between interviews!
Laura: Why Atlas Oil Company?
Megan: At first, I wasn’t
interested. “Oi l?! Who’s
interested in oil!” But the
company representative and I
really connected. I learned they
do a lot of business and
m a r k e t i n g w i t h o t h e r
companies, since they supply oil
for gas stations and different
industries. They have an in-
house marketing team that
supplies materials for gas
stations and other companies!
So GO TO JOB FAIRS! It’s great
practice, and worth much more
than the $10 I paid!

Chan Shun Hall from over a
dozen countries, including
Zambia, Peru, the Philippines,
Lebanon, and the U.S.

Interview: The Follow-Up
You’ve landed the interview, done your
research, dressed to perfection, and nailed the
interview. Great! But now what?
Ask about next steps DURING the
interview: Ask the interviewer what the next
step in the process is, and when you can expect
to hear from them.
Send a thank-you note (soon!): Receiving a
handwritten thank-you card is always a bonus.
However, at least take the time to send the
interviewer an email thanking him or her for the
time & reiterating your interest in the position.
Follow up if you haven’t heard within
the given timetable: If you haven’t
heard from the interviewer within the
timetable he/she gave you, send a quick
note. Don’t be pushy, but ask if he/she has an update and say
you’re willing to supply more information if needed. Finally, if
you have followed up a couple times within a polite timeframe
with no response, move on.
What if rejected?: What if the news is bad and you didn’t
get the position? First, thank the person for their time and for
considering you. Second, ask if they’re willing to provide
feedback that you could use in future interviews. The answer
may be no, but it shows your interest in improvement.
Every year, the School of
Business Administration
hosts a field trip. In
February, 42 students and
4 faculty/staff visited the
windy city of Chicago!
We had a wonderful time
visiting Skydeck Chicago at the
Willis Tower, where students
enjoyed the 360° view and
interactive exhibits around the
skydeck. Students also posed
for pictures on a thick glass
ledge 1,353 feet above the
streets of Chicago.

We also visited the Chicago
Board of Trade, which is the
world’s oldest futures and
options exchange. Students
were able to view the Chicago
Board of Trade vault which,
although now empty, used to
house gold, silver, and cash, as
well as the trading pit and
various other sights of the
“CBOT building.”
Students had the opportunity to eat
in Chicago, where many of them took
advantage of Chicago’s signature
deep-dish pizza. After the trip,
students submitted photos as part of
a photo contest. Dr. A l len
Stembridge, the SBA Dean, selected
Derek Adam Niere and Kimberly
Adame as winners of the photo
contest.
