    Decorative effects

A wide variety of decorative effects

can be achieved using Gyprocaccessories to enhance walls and

ceilings, and to relieve flat runs of

lining, joints and angles. The portfolio

    of decorative products comprises

gypsum cove and cornice profilesand pre-formed, aluminium Gyproc

    Styletrims. Gyproc Cove and Cornice

products relieve the plain, boxy look

at internal ceiling angles to create a

    more pleasing internal environment.

A number of design effects are

possible by incorporating steps to the

wall and ceiling angles, using Gyproc

    Cornice Battens and Strips.

Construct ion t ips - Cove and Cornice

l Gyproc Cove and Cornice can be installed to clean, dry and sound

backgrounds using Gyproc Cove Adhesive, which is also used to f ill gaps

    and mitres

l Airt ightness is essential for optimum sound and thermal insulation of

plasterboard building elements. Gyproc Cove or Cornice helps achieve

    this while improving the appearance

l Where the wall or ceiling has severe irregularities or where the surface

would not provide sufficient adhesion, Gyproc Cove or Cornice can be

mechanically fixedInstalling Gyproc Cove and Corn

    Preparation

Remove any wallpaper from the wand ceiling.

Draw guidelines along the walls aceiling, 67mm from the wall / ceilingangle for Gyproc Cove100 and 83m

    Gyproc Cove 127.

For Gyproc Cornice, draw a line oceiling 92mm from the angle and on

wall at 84mm from the angle.

Scratch plastered or painted areaswhich will be in contact with the profile to

provide a key for the adhesive, and brushaway any dust or loose material.

    Cutting

Cut the profile to length using a finetooth saw.

Mitre using a Gyproc Cove Mitre Box,

Gyproc Magic Mitre, Gyproc CoveMitre - Metal or other suitable mitre

block, making saw cuts into the curveas required.

    Applying adhesive

Mix Gyproc Cove Adhesive with wateras per the user guidance on thepackaging.

Make the mix stiff enough to spread

without running - too stiff and it will bediff icult to apply, too thin and it will notbond properly.

As a rough guide, 1kg of GyprocCove Adhesive will fix about 4m ofGyproc Cove or Cornice and remains

usable for at least 40 minutes. Avoidmixing more than can be used in thistime. The adhesive will set hard in90 - 120 minutes.

Keep tools and buckets clean and

free from set adhesive. Damp down dryplaster or other high suction

backgrounds immediately priorto applying the adhesive.

    Fixing

Lightly nail the wall line to providetemporary support to the profile until theadhesive has set. Use two nails for each

    piece.

Offer up the profile and push it f irmlyinto position between the guide lines.

Remove excess adhesive and use make good the mitres and any joints

    Stop ends

Stop ends are required where openingsextend to ceiling height. Measure out alength of profile for the run which abuts

the wall opening or reveal, and cut the

    appropriate external mitre.

Cut the corresponding mitre on a shortsurplus length and cut the length offsquare to leave a wedge shape which

forms a perfectly fit ting, mitred stop-end.

Fix both lengths as normal (the longerone first) and make good the mitre withGyproc Cove Adhesive as previous.

Mit ring by the project ions method

Draw lines along the ceiling parallel tothe walls and extend them to intersect asshown (refer to Preparation earlier for

    dimension).

Place suitably sized profile section withsquare ends in position and mark on itswall edge the point where the walls meet,

and on the ceiling edge the point where

    the lines drawn intersect.

Cut the profile along a line drawn

    between the two marks.

    Finishing

After making good, allow to drythoroughly, then treat surfaces with

Gyproc Drywall Primer, prior to applyingthe decorative paint finish.

    Creat ing Steps

For the desired profile, decide howmany steps are required at the wall andceiling posit ions and the step sizes.

Work out the position of the Gyproc

Cornice Strips and mark the ceiling and /or wall.

Scratch plastered or painted areaswhich will be in contact with the profile to

provide a key for the adhesive, and brushaway any dust or loose material.

Lightly nail the wall / ceiling to aidalignment and give temporary support

while the adhesive sets. Use two nails foreach strip.

Apply Gyproc Cove Adhesive, approximately 3mm thick, to each stripand comb out.

Position the strip against thebackground and tap back with straight

    edge.

Fix additional strips in the same mMake sure the adhesive has set

    thoroughly before starting the next

Treat all exposed edges as necessary tocontrol suction before making good the

    step joints.

When dry, brush in adhesive to the

small gaps at step edges. The steps arenow ready to receive the Gyproc Cove orCornice profile.

Fix Gyproc Cornice Battens in the samemanner as Gyproc Cornice Strips to allow

the new profile to bridge over an existingold or damaged moulding without the

    Construction tips - Styletrims

l Gyproc Styletrims can be used in conjunction with Gypframe metal

studs, metal furring channels, British Gypsum GypLyner systems,

    and timber framing

l Vertical runs of Gyproc Styletrim and all Gyproc Styletrim joints should

    be supported by framing members

l Gyproc Styletrims should be backed by plasterboard, avoiding direct

    contact with framing members

l If plasterboard is removed for installation of Gyproc Styletrims, f ire

resistance and sound insulation performances will be affected and an

additional layer of plasterboard may need to be installed

    Installing Gyproc Styletrims

    Cutting

Cut Gyproc Styletrims using a fixedpower saw. Ensure accurate cutting

order to achieve neat but t joints and

    joints.

    Sealant f ixing

Apply a 5mm bead of Gyproc Sealant tothe lining surface which will be in contactwith the solid surface(s) of the Gyproc

    Styletrim.

Position the Gyproc Styletrim and pressfirmly into the sealant bead, workingprogressively along the length of the

    Gyproc Styletrim.

If sealant is applied to the edge ofa board, this should be a bound edge. If

a cut edge is unavoidable, pre-treatmentwith a suitable bonding agent may be

    necessary.

    Mechanical f ixing

Where increased strength is requirede.g. Gyproc Styletrim corners, mechanically pre-f ix Gyproc Styletrim

    prior to joint treatment.

Screw-fix the Gyproc Styletrim where itcrosses support framing, at 600mmmaximum centres, using Gyproc Drywall

Screws (or Gyproc Jack-Point Screws ifframework metal is 0.80mm thick or

    greater).

Where the Gyproc Styletrim runs alongthe line of the framing, fix at 150mm

    centres.

Insert the screw through the slot in thefin nearest to the centre line of theframing member, and f ix using a slowspeed screwdriver.

    Select screws of adequate length

to engage the framing - when fixing toGypframe studs through two layers of12.5mm Gyproc plasterboard use 36mGyproc Drywall Screws, through onelayer of 12.5mm board use 25mmGyproc Drywall Screws. Ensure that thehead is driven home fully to avoidfouling the trowel during subsequent

jointing. For timber studs a minimumpenetration of 25mm is required.

    Sealant plus mechanical f ixing

Where maximum durability is requirede.g. areas subject to impact such as alldoors and skirt ings, a combination of

    sealant and mechanical screw-fixing is

recommended. In this situation, GyprocJoint Tape should be used during the

    joint ing process.

Locate the Gyproc Styletrim using acontinuous bead of Gyproc Sealant as

    described in Sealant fixing.

Insert Gyproc Drywall Screws asdescribed in Mechanical fixing , ear

    Jointing

Lay on jointing material as required andfirmly bed Gyproc Joint Tape.

Follow on immediately with a furtherapplication of jointing material, f illing outflush from the raised lip of the Gyproc

    Styletrim to the lining surface.

Ensure that the tape does notoverlap the raised lip of the Gyproc

    Styletrim.

Take care to remove any surplusmaterial from the Gyproc Styletrim using a

    damp sponge or cloth.

Finish the joint by applying one or twocoats of jointing material as required.

Thistle ProTape FT50 can be used inplace of paper tape. No bedding is

required, but the jointing material mustbe pressed adequately through the tape

mesh during trowelling. However, GyprocJoint Tape provides greater resistant to

    cracking compared to Thistle ProTapeFT50.
