Widely recognized for our highly individual approach to design, our firm has

received over 200 awards for design excellence.

With a staff of highly trained, immensely talented and deeply passionate

individuals in our San Francisco and Miami offices, we successfully merge fifty

years of experience with the energy, drive and dedication of a second gen-

eration of partners. With the technical capabilities and the understanding to

take even the largest projects from initial concept through construction any-

where in the world, we remain a hands-on, design-oriented practice at heart.

Integrity in design, connection to the client and balance in our corporate

culture are integral to our identity.

Our vast experience with a wide array of project types, geographic locations,

construction techniques and architectural styles gives us a high level of

expertise, while our collaborative process and individual approach to each

project allow us to be flexible and responsive. Site-sensitive design has been

a hallmark of our practice.

We strive to honor the site with design solutions inspired by the regional ver-

nacular, local materials and the sense of place inherent within each site, and

we are dedicated to advocating sustainable design and construction meth-

ods on all of our projects. All four of our principals, and over 30% of our staff,

are LEED Accredited Professionals, with a firm-wide goal of 100% accreditation.

SB ARCHITECTS has established a world-wide

reputation for excellence in the planning and

design of large-scale hotel, resort, multi-family

residential, and mixed-use projects.

This mixed-use urban infill project is an integral

part of a significant redevelopment effort in

downtown St.Petersburg. The design concept

combines a 30-story residential tower with a

three-story component of residential-over-retail

structures wrapped around parking. Although

structurally independent, the tower and lower-

rise structures are designed to work together

as a single residential complex, integrated

through an amenity suite and pool deck on the

third level podium. The tower residences offer

views of Tampa Bay while the low-rise struc-

tures are designed as a series of buildings,

breaking up the massing and creating interest

at street level.

Palm Court

Miami Design District

M I A M I , F L O R I D A

SB Architects is working with Dacra on

an ambitious expansion of the Miami De-

sign District. Palm Court, the fi rst phase

of the expansion project, introduces a

a whole new approach to retail design

and architecture. The design team is

creating the architectural skeleton for

the block – addressing building structure,

overall identity and the movement of

people through the space - and giving

the individual retailers the opportunity

to create the entire 45-foot facade for

their structures. A pedestrian ‘paseo’ will

bisect the multi-block expansion, with

grand plazas at either end. Green roofs

top nearly every structure, and the entire

project being designed with the goal of

LEED Gold Certifi cation.

One of the leading examples of the urban

mixed-use project type in the country, this

project replaces an aging single-story

mall, (with 100% surface parking), with a

densely designed, multi-story mixed-use

community that incorporates all of its

parking needs within the new structures.

On the podiums of Buildings 7 and 8, inte-

rior streets provide access to flats and

direct-entry townhouses (each with its own

garage), creating real neighborhoods

above street level. The main street is high-

lighted by a median park and lined with

ground-floor retail, restaurants and public

gathering places, which invoke the impres-

sion of an urban district that has devel-

oped over time. San Jose Mercury News

architecture critic Alan Hess commented,

“Santana Row shows the extraordinary

value added by good design...”

Included on Conde Nast’s 2008 “Hot List” of

the world’s hottest new hotels, this project

transforms an historic but tired hotel in the

heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter into an

ultra-chic boutique hotel that has instantly

become a major destination. The design team

took the six-story structure down to the shell to

create a completely new experience on the

interior, while the exterior received a respectful

renovation that enhanced the historic façade

with minimalistic details. This destination hotel

is defined by its dramatic public spaces, from

the basement nightclub and lounge, to the

rooftop bar, outdoor restaurant and pool with

panoramic views of downtown San Diego. At

every turn, the architecture and interiors work

together to create the unexpected – sleek,

modern architectural forms combined with

dramatic, over-the-top interiors, all within a

restrained historic envelope.

Envisioned as a members-only social club,

GH Atlanta will be the inaugural property

for the Guesthouse brand. Designed as

an oasis within an urban setting, GH

Atlanta will combine amenities, events

and a sense of community for its mem-

bers. At the heart of the concept lies a

luxurious outdoor entertainment area,

with multiple options for relaxing and

socializing, private cabanas, beach vol-

leyball, multiple bars, and event venues.

Indoors, the living room and dining room

provide social hubs, while a state-of-the-

art fitness facility ensures that it enhanc-

es not only members’ social and profes-

sional lives, but their physical lives as

well. The design vision is modern but

inviting, sophisticated but not stuffy.

SB Architects acted as architect-of-record for

the public spaces of this urban luxury hotel,

which is an integral component of Espirito

Santo Plaza, a mixed-use highrise develop-

ment in downtown Miami. SB Architects

worked directly with The Gettys Group to

create the new hotel within the existing per-

ameters of a 36-story glass tower designed by

Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). The hotel spans

the 10th through 25th floors, with additional

conference facilities on the third floor. The

nine floors below the hotel house 30,000

square feet of Class “A” office space, with a

condo hotel occupying the 11 floors above.

Brought on board with construction already

well underway, SB Architects and Gettys faced

the significant challenge of designing to strin-

gent 4½-star standards without a specific

brand initially identified, all within the confines

of an existing building structure.

University of Southern California campus

into an urban mixed-use village. With its

primary entrance on one of the campus’s

most prominent intersections, the design

philosphy for this dense, infill project is to

create a true residential neighborhood for

students, faculty and the surrounding com-

munity. The goal is to use the architecture

and public spaces to form a unique village

character, while acknowledging the proj-

ect’s very urban surroundings. The master

plan follows the specific guidelines of the

University’s overall master plan. The plan is

organized along the village’s pedestrian-ori-

ented main street, which cuts through the

center of the project and provides a shared

public space not only at street level, but

when overlooked from the housing above.

This project is an integral part of the

“Heart of the City” re-development effort

to revitalize the city of San Jose. This high-

density, urban mixed-use project provides

197 for-sale condominiums and 32,000

square feet of retail, restaurants and enter-

tainment venues, adding much-needed

housing and a vibrant public gathering

place to the community. The design juxta-

poses a signature 22-story high-rise tower

with a mixed-use component. The tower

rises from the mid-rise structure below,

overlooking the residential amenities - pool,

recreation center and fitness facility locat-

ed on the podium. A new pedestrian-ori-

ented street lined with shops, trees and

outdoor seating bisects the city block. This

transit-oriented development is directly

adjacent to the Santa Clara Valley light rail

system.

SB Architects won an international design

competition for the master-planning and design

of Phase One of this expansive master-planned

development, which includes 7 mixed-use struc-

tures overlooking the Joeseph Khoury Marina,

the largest marina in Beirut. Set upon a grand

pedestrian promenade raised seven meters

above sea level, the four central structures will

house high-end residences above a carefully or-

chestrated progression of retail and restaurants,

creating a sophisticated and exciting urban

destination. When complete, Waterfront City

will cover an area of over 193,600 square meters,

with more than 5,000 new residences, as well

as commercial and retail districts, a destination

shopping mall and two hotels. Set against the

rich cultural backdrop of Beirut, Waterfront

City presents the opportunity to fuse location,

climate, views and planning concept into new

urbanism for this historic city.

cally in the context of an urban highrise.

Four levels of retail will anchor the complex

to the streetscape of the neighborhood,

with 12 levels of office space directly above

it. The centerpiece of the structure, occupy-

ing levels 17-24, will be a club-style boutique

This mixed-use project is part of the Mission

Bay development, an extensive redevelop-

ment effort in downtown San Francisco.

Located just a few blocks from the city’s

downtown ballpark, this project is part of a

movement to create a new residential

neighborhood and retail destination. The

building combines a modern, urban archi-

tectural vernacular with a community-ori-

ented approach to massing and street

presence. Two-story retail spaces (limited in

size to encourage local business) front

Fourth Street, with two-story townhouses

opening onto the smaller “neighborhood”

streets on both sides of the project.

Residential parking is tucked behind the

retail and townhouses, topped by an expan-

sive third-story podium with a clubhouse

and outdoor gathering spaces.

This project in San Francisco’s Mission

District combines flats and two-level town-

houses for a total of 76 for-sale residential

units. An existing three-story brick ware-

house has been transformed into 23 resi-

dential units. A new courtyard building

adjacent to the warehouse houses 53 units.

Five levels of residences overlook a court-

yard situated one level below grade, with

four levels overlooking street views.

Parking is housed in two levels below the

courtyard. The design of the new construc-

tion is distinctly urban in character. An

eclectic vocabulary of architectural refer-

ences reflects the neighborhood, which

includes residential, industrial, commercial

and retail enterprises. A mixture of materi-

als, combined with set-back elements, bays

and covered balconies, creates a lively

facade.

SB Architects designed the project con-

cept and residential portions of this large

mixed-use project in the heart of the San

Francisco Bay Area. The one, two and

three-bedroom residences are located in

two to four stories over a two to three-

story retail and parking podium. The resi-

dential structures are designed around a

series of courtyards, which are visible

from the street. This design serves sever-

al purposes. It gives the illusion of numer-

ous layers and buildings within each sin-

gle-structure footprint, brings light and

views to the interior units, and creates a

series of on-podium outdoor spaces for

residents - resulting in a “community

above the street.”

These four phases of the Mission Hills

Shenzhen mixed-use development are com-

prised of three mixed-use high-rise towers

overlooking a mid-rise residential community.

Sited on either side of the primary access

road, the new communities provide an urban

core for the existing development. The series

of high-rise structures is conceived as a strong

contemporary design statement, providing

sweeping views and an iconic modern beacon

for the area, and creating a sculptural skyline

above a dramatic, glassed-in retail base.

Directly across the road, the 36 mid-rise

structures are clustered around a central lake.

A series of interconnected garden courts,

bridges and pavilions creates a welcoming,

highly walkable residential environment. C l i e n t

Located in the heart of downtown Palm

San Jacinto Mountains, this hotel presents the

opportunity to spark a resurgence in this

iconic city. The goal for the design is to cre-

ate a vibrant structure with a strong visual

identity, capable of drawing a hip new breed

of clientele to Palm Springs. The design con-

cept treats the hotel as a stage, where every-

one can be a performer. Mid-century mod-

vibrant shots of color, create a simple, yet

edgy and dramatic backdrop. The hotel

embraces an expansive pool garden, laid out

for maximum sun and view exposure.
