I feel foggy, edgy, achy and tired.” “Since all this started, I wake up in the middle of the night and toss and turn.” “I thought my migraines had finally ended. Now I am having them again.” “I don’t want to, but maybe I need to increase my medication.” Many of us feel we have been swept up into a dizzying, exhausting time of daily worry, fear, and confusion as we navigate the Covid-19 pandemic. Times like these call for extraordinary care of self and one another. But it doesn’t have to be stressful to reduce stress. Solutions can be surprisingly simple. In fact, it is often simplicity that we need as an an- tidote to complicated situations. Fortunately, we are designed to benefit tremendously from simple and natural remedies that soothe and nourish the nervous and immune systems. When the body and mind are on constant high alert as we are now, feeling fearful and threatened, one of the best things we can do for our health is take time every day to send messages of safety and self care to ourselves. Deep relaxation and meditation, time in nature, having fun, nourishing relationships - these are truly good medicine with important health- promoting effects. Our bodies have a wise and efficient system for responding to and recovering from stressful events. When we perceive that we are in danger of some kind, the stress response system activates the brain and ner- vous system, hormonal system, and major organs to optimize our ability to successfully defend ourselves from threat. But when threat and stress to the body and mind becomes ongoing without adequate relief, it’s a different story. This is SOS - Survival Over- drive Syndrome – a constant state of “fight, flight or freeze.” This can be very taxing and depleting, and can contribute to less resilience to illness. Research has shown that stressful events can contribute to the onset or worsening of many chronic illnesses. What are our best natural medicines? Always start with food. Truly good food can make a stun- ning difference in how we feel and how we heal. Most Americans get insufficient nutrients from the processed foods we eat. Without adequate nutrients, we are vulnerable to ill health. Our bodies and minds, including the immune system, are designed to func- tion best when nourished with foods the way nature provides them – right from the ground and the trees. Highly processed foods with chemical additives can cause irritation and inflammation to our bodies and even our brains, leading to ill health. A simple and sure-fire way to ensure a health-supporting diet is to base your food choices on a Mediterranean Diet, con- sidered by many to be the most healthful, uncompli- cated, and delicious way to eat. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, herbs, spices, nuts and healthy fats such as olive oil are the basis of this way of eating, with fresh fish or healthy meats a few times a week. Sleep! Prioritize good sleep for yourself and your family. Good sleep is restorative. Poor sleep sets the stage for a weakening of our health. In my medical practice, no matter what the patient’s illness, if sleep is not good that is where we start. It’s very difficult to heal when the body and mind don’t have the magic elixir of sleep. Unfortunately, many of us have habits that disturb good sleep, such as night time use of electronics, and many depend on prescription medi- cations to get through the night. This can be helpful short term, but not ideal as a long-term solution. Learn about and practice “sleep hygiene.” To nourish and support our resilience and im- mune health, nature has given us some lovely, safe herbs. Chamomile, hops, passionflower, lemon balm, lavender are examples of plants that help balance our nervous system. Botanical (herbal) medicine is how humans have tended to common illnesses for their families for generations. Ask your grandmothers. There is a wealth of good research to give us confi- dence in using certain herbs. A health care provider familiar with botanical medicine can help you choose wisely and safely. We can not escape the conditions we are in now, but we can bring to ourselves and each other the remedies of nourishment, calm, rest, laughter, and love. This will help us navigate these rough days and grow forward into our lives with much-needed and precious resources. Access to reliable local news and information is among those valued local businesses. That is why your local newspaper is a critical component to the COVID-19 response. Our continued ability to serve our communities is being undermined by the finan- cial harm posed by the current crisis. In this moment, your local newspaper is work- ing hard to keep you informed. Our papers have maintained their operations, and provided a wide range of information at no cost – all to help keep isolated individuals and families connected to their communities. Unfortunately, the rapid and likely continued drop in advertising revenue from local businesses, as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic, is having an immediate impact on your hometown paper and it’s ability to maintain their operations. When it’s locally owned, it’s not just a business. It’s a person who lives here, possibly a neighbor or someone you know from the gym or the park or school events. Likewise, the people they employ are your neighbors also. It’s personal. It is all of our Challenging Times responsibilities to help our local business own- ers succeed. It is the core of our community, our lifeblood. Without our local business partners, we would be left with only the large national chains. These national businesses really have no ties to our community. They are looking only to get our money and run when times get rough. Please make a pact with your family and friends to purchase every- thing you possibly can from local purveyors. Because it’s not just business, it’s their survival and ours.
