FROM THE WORLD OF GUSThe government is shut down. The stock market is falling.People are killing people all over the world and right herein Colorado. None of these things are important! The onlything that is news to me is that Mom decided to adopt anotherMaxFund animal and bring it home… another cat no less.

Daphne is a kind of funny-looking Siamese girl. Kind of squarebuilt, wide as she is deep, with shortish legs. One of those legsdidn’t work normally when she came to our house, but it’s doingbetter now. Her tail isn’t as long as it’s supposed to be either.

In spite of all this, Daphne thinks she is beautiful. Don’t allcats have a glorified opinion of themselves? When she firstarrived at our house things got a little messy. I, of course, could not be restrained. I insisted on shoving my big noseinto her. All I was doing was asking who she was, and tryingto convince her that I was harmless and wanted to be herfriend. She didn’t see it that way. Can you believe it? Sheactually hissed at me, spit at me, and swatted at me. Thefact that my head is as big as her whole body may have hadsomething to do with that.

But because I am what I am, I just persisted. Within a fewhours I had her persuaded that I may be a nuisance, but aharmless nuisance. Now, a couple weeks later, we are realbuds. Sometimes Mom and Dad laugh and point at uswhen we lie down together and clean each other’s face. Idon’t care when she gets a little rough, but Daphne insistson me being delicate. Me, being delicate? That’s a laugh!

Gypsy just accepts her. Nothing upsets Gypsy’s dignity, butwho knows what she is actually feels about the new situation. The surprising thing is the way the other two cats haveadopted her. They talk about “getting along like cats anddogs,” but I have found that the two species often get alongbetter than cats with cats. Adult cats can be downrightsnotty when another adult cat is introduced.

But everybody loves Gus. I insist on it!

The Long TripPart 3

Oo, Oo, Oo, guess what I heard today, go ahead, guess! Well, OK I will tell you – Mom thinks I am cute.Perhaps that is no surprise, but I found out she likes it when I reach out my paw to keep her from gettingout of bed in the morning. The truth is that the longer I can keep her in bed, the more loving I get so Ithink it is a good idea don’t you?

Well, let’s see…We spent time at Mom’s sister’s house. We were parked in the back yard which was great. I couldsee a long way. They have a great big back yard and an even bigger dog! Mom says she is a Great Dane. I got tosniff her through the screen door and she seemed nice. Kelly, the orange cat, is not friendly to anyone except hersister. He lives outside all the time; I guess he likes it that way.

Our next stop is a place called Walt Disney World. Not sure what all the excitement is about but Mom and Dadsure seem to be. I heard they have mice there, Mickey and Minnie. It seems strange to give names to your din-ner. I think that would make it hard to eat them if they were pets. Two leggers are strange sometimes. I did notenjoy Disney World. I did not get to meet Mickey and Minnie (maybe they thought I would eat them) and Momand Dad were gone every day from morning until late at night.

I started something new this trip. Once we got to where the temperature outside was very hot I started pullingout some of my fur. Mom helped by brushing me but that was not enough. I kept pulling and pulling out my furand some mornings the place looked like there had been a big cat fight. Now mind you I was inside the cool RVbut that did not seem to matter. I now have 2 balding spots and Mom is worried I somehow caught something.Well, guess who will be having a vet appointment when we get home. We are starting for home already so weshould be there in about a week. Everyone seems to be ready, especially Dad. He says he wants to get back to hisdesk; he is tired of the dinette table as a work space. I do not think our family would do well as full time RVers,we like our home too much. Goodbye for now.

THANKSGIVING PETSAFETY TIPSKeeping Thanksgiving Happy:

10 Pet Safety Tipshttp://www.animalleague.org/expert-advice/health/arti-cles/seasonal/thanksgiving-tips.html

Thanksgiving is such a wonderful and meaningfulholiday. Families and friends excitedly gather toshow their gratitude for all they are so fortunate

to have. Ovens are working overtime and deliciousholiday aromas fill the air.

During this happy time of family, food and giving, people tend to become overly generous with their pets. This means that dogs and cats will get a lot of tablefood scraps. Sometimes, however, too many treats canlead to injury or illness for our pets.

Here are some important tips to help keep your petssafe this holiday – and to keep the “Happy” inThanksgiving!

1. Fatty Foods: Too many fatty, rich, or unfamiliarfoods can give your pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis;two medical conditions that can be very painful andeven life-threatening.

2. Diet and Exercise: Maintain your pet’s regular mealand exercise schedule and avoid too many holiday leftovers. A disruption in his dietary routine can causestomach upset, diarrhea and/or vomiting.

3. Bones: Make no bones about it. Certain bones canlacerate or obstruct your pets' insides. Save the bonesfor the broth – not your dog.

4. Onions: Onions and onionpowder, widely found in stuffingand used as a general seasoning, will destroy your dog orcat's red blood cells, which can lead to anemia.

5. Grapes and Raisins:Grapes and raisins containa toxin that can cause kidneydamage to both dogs and cats.

6. Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal toyour dog or cat; so all those sweets must be keptwell out of reach.

7. Food Wrappings: Aluminum foil, wax paper andother food wrappings can cause intestinal obstruction.Make sure to place these items securely in the garbage.

8. Fresh Water: Make sure your pet always has freshwater. When there are more people in the house, there's more chance to bump into the water bowl leaving your pet dry.

9. Quiet Time: Make sure your pet has a quiet retreatshould the holiday festivities be too much for him.Watch his behavior to make sure he is not stressed.

10. Garbage: Keep an eye on the garbage and keepit securely fastened! If your dog gets into it, he maythink he's hit the jackpot, but all he'll be winning ishealth problems from something as simple as gastricdisturbance, vomiting and diarrhea to the worst-casescenario – death.

10 Interesting Facts About DogsShelley Mamott, Staff Writerhttp://www.aplacetolovedogs.com/2011/12/10-interesting-facts-about-dogs/1486625278/

1. PantingDogs only have sweat glands between thepads of their feet. They dissipate the majorityof their heat by panting.

2. Nose PrintsBoth cats and dogs noses are unique, like human fingerprints. It’s becoming more common to take nose prints of dogs in case

they’re ever lost or stolen. Hmmm, interesting.

3. Squishy FaceDogs, with more squished faces such aspugs, boxers, and bulldogs tend to havemore health problems. The structure of theirfaces makes them more prone to respiratoryproblems, dental problems, and otherhealth issues.

4. Sense of SmellA dog’s sense of smell is more than 100,000times stronger than a humans. While humanshave about five million scent receptors in theirnoses, a bloodhound has up to three hundredmillion. He knows where you hid that bone!

5. Color BlindDogs are not actually completely colorblind. Not only do they see in shades of gray butthey can also see distinct colors, just not aswell as we do. Many experts believe thatdogs have fewer retinal cone cells andbecause of this, they are red-green color-blind. Dogs are dichromatic, which meansthey only see two primary colors – blue andyellow.

6. Playing FetchApparently, fetch is not a dog’s very favoritegame, they actually prefer a game calledkeep away. Keep away is a game you playwith your dog where you try and take a toy

or a ball away from them. It’s game you that you never everhave to teach them. They love it and can play this game allday long. Fetch is a game that needs to be taught.

7. Changing SpotsDalmatian puppies are born with a plain white coat, andtheir first spots usually start to appear within a week afterbirth. After about a month the Dalmatian has most of itsspots but they continue to develop throughout theDalmatians life but at a much slower rate.

8. GroomingSome dogs actuallylick their paws andthen clean theirheads, just like cats. Nothing to worryabout unless theystart meowing ofcourse.

9. Time KeepingDogs have an amazing internal clock. They know exactlywhen it’s time to go for a walk, to play, to eat and to go tobed. They know when it’s time for you to get up in the morn-ing and when you are expected home from work, particularlyif you keep to a regular schedule. You might want to consider-ing using your dog as your morning alarm clock!

10. Potty TrainingAll puppies have accidents during the night and are unable to control or ‘hold it in’ overnight until they are about four months old. Which, takes a lot less time thantoilet training a baby.

WAYS WE BOND WITH OUR CATSBy Franny Syufy; About.com Guide

One of the most powerful bondsknown is the bond between humansand their cats. In some ways, it is an

ethereal relationship – cats can sense whenwe don’t feel well; when we experiencestress or unhappiness because of finances, the job, or other personal relationships. Wecan also intuit when our cats are not feelingup to par, because of stress, conflict withanother cat, or depression over the loss ofanother family cat. At these times we feelour cat’s pain and are as concerned as whenour children are sick or unhappy.

The bond between people and their pets isso universal that in 1997 the PurdueUniversity School of Veterinary Medicinechanged the name of its Center for AppliedEthology and Human-Animal Interactionto Center for the Human-Animal Bond.

We Consider Our Cats Family MembersIt has become so routine as to be commonto see someone refer to her cat as “my babygirl,” “my boy,” or “my furkid.” The age ofthe cat really doesn’t matter. We can be asmaternal (or paternal) toward a cat of 17 asone of two or three. In fact, in my day-to-daycontact with readers, it has become fairlyrare to see anyone refer to his or her cat as“my pet.” To me, “pet” has the connotationof demoting my cat to second-class citizenship;about the same as considering him my“property.” Although I routinely use the genericterm “pets” when referring to multiple species,e.g. “cats, dogs, birds, and exotic pets,” mycats are my kids, my babies, my boys and girl.

We Care for Our Cats in Sicknessand in HealthI have often half-seriously joked that it is a shame I can’t deduct my cats asdependents on my tax returns. Sometimesit seems that I spend as much time, worry, and cash on their care as I did for mythree human children when they weregrowing up. I feel fortunate that I am ableto do so, even though at times I have tomake personal sacrifices to make the budget ends meet.

Our Cats Provide Us With TherapyIt has come as no secret that pets have been used as therapyanimals for years in senior care centers, nursing homes, and in some cases in hospital wards. Although for yearsboth therapy dogs, and even therapy horses have becomecommon, in more recent years, cats have been trained astherapy animals. S.A.R.A., Service Animal Registry ofAmerica TM claims to be the oldest organization to trainand certify service animals, and it has a program for cats.

One of the most poignant stories I’ve read was the case ofRichard, an autistic child, written by his father, J. Manerling.JM, who worked in neuroscience, thought that perhapsRichard might respond to a dog, and took him to an ani-mal shelter one day. Although Richard walked right by thedogs and puppies, when they entered the area housing cats,Richard alerted immediately at the sight of a tuxedo cat ina cage, pointed, and said “Cat!”

We Treat Our Cats With Love and UnderstandingJust as with human relationships, the relationship betweenthe human parent and the cat is founded on love andunderstanding. It’s almost a given that our cats love us.They show their love in over a dozen different ways, which only endear them to us more.

Understanding our cats solidifies and strengthens our lovefor them. Since we understand that cats feel stress the sameways we do, we can show our love and help our cats at thesame time by providing them outlets for their stress, suchas scratching posts, playing with them, and loving brushingand combing.

We Honor Our Bond By Helping Other CatsIt’s almost impossible to love your own cats withoutwanting to help other cats. It’s just in our nature. It doesn’t take away anything from our own cats, and makes us grateful to have them.

The Feline-Human Bond Transcends DeathWe choose our human friends because they are of the samemind as we are about cats, especially when a well-loved catdies. They will never say, “Get over it. It was just a cat.”There is no such thing as “just a cat.” My friends and Iknow that, and when one of our cats dies, we console eachother the same way as if a human relative or loved one hadpassed on. At the same time, most of us believe that atsome time in the future, we will meet out cats “on the otherside,” whether it be at the Rainbow Bridge, somewhereamong the stars and planets of the universe, or perhaps,

reincarnated in another life. Coping with the loss of acat is never easy.

Some of us have had dreams of our cats after theirpassing, or fleeting glimpses of them out of the cornerof an eye. We interpret these occasions as the cat’s visitto us to let us know that he or she is all right.

One of the ways we keep our memories alive whilecoping with the loss is to create a memorial to the catwe’ve lost. Doing so helps us forget the immediate painof the loss and remember the happier times.

Cats Mourn Loss TooWhile there may be no scientific proof, it is painfullyevident that cats can mourn the death of a companioncat or human caregiver. Perhaps it is a feeling of loss, since the other cat or person may suddenly disappearand never return. It’s particularly clear when a cat isrushed away to the veterinarian in a cage and neverreturns. Sometimes it helps to give the cat left behindan article of clothing of his human, or a blanket or toywith the other cat’s scent.

Death is an inevitable part of life for all of us, humansand animals. While it is painful to contemplate losing acat, we know that it is the eventual price we have to payfor their loving companionship. The bond remains, and, if we’re fortunate, eventually we’ll find the samekind of bond again with another cat.

CALMING CAT BEHAVIORSBy Franny Syufy; About.com Guide

When a Cat Pees Out of the BoxWe do not “rub his nose in it,” yell at him, or punishhim in other ways. We know that cats are naturallyclean by nature, and if all is well, they will use the litterboxes provided for their waste.

Vet Visit First PriorityWe first take the cat to our veterinary clinic for a thor-ough examination, including a urinalysis and othertests, to determine if an FLUTD (Feline Urinary TractDisorder) caused by Cystitis or a UTI could be thecause. We know that pain during urination can causecats to avoid the litter box, and that if there is a block-age, it is considered a veterinary emergency.

Next: Check Litter Box CleanlinessWe then make sure that all the litter boxes in the home arescrupulously clean. If not, we clean them, because a “kissand a promise” simply won’t work. No one wants to use adirty toilet, and cats’ sense of smell is far superior to ours.

Is Your Cat’s Box Avoidance Fear-BasedIf there is an hierarchy issue, another cat may beintimidating this one, making him afraid to use thebox. Or, if the box is too close to a noise source (suchas in a laundry room), the noise may also keep himaway. Litter Box Placement is important.

Is Age a Factor?Arthritis can make it painful for the cat to get in andout of the box. And sadly, some cats become senile tothe point that they forget to use the box. My belovedkitty, Shannon, pictured here became senile in his lastyear of life.

When Our Cats FightWe first ask ourselves if there have been any recentsdisruptive changes in our lives, as cats are creatures ofhabit and intensely dislike change of any sort.Innocuous things to us, such as moving the furniture,or a weekend guest, can raise havoc with cats. Evenworse, a new cat, a long-distance move, or a loud, ongoing home remodel, will result in uproar. If everything has been calm on the home front, take alook outside. A strange cat within view from a win-dow, or marking the front door with urine, is a chal-lenge to the cats inside. They may very well want tocause serious damage to the outsider, but since he isnot available, a cat will savagely turn on the cat whoused to be his buddy. It’s called redirected aggression, and once you’ve seen its results, you’ll be on the look-out for strays in your yard from that day forward.

When a Cat Scratches FurnitureFirst, we understand that cats need their claws, bothfor protection and for mobility. They scratch to help“sharpen” their claws, by removing the transparentsheath that covers each claw. We would never dreamof declawing our cat because of illegal scratching.Instead, we provide him with legal scratching oppor-tunities, such as scratching posts, cat towers, and plastic nail caps, such as Soft Claws.
