Australian breeders will gain more access to two of the world’s most coveted sirelines with Saxon Warrior, a son of Japan’s champion super-sire Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), and Mendelssohn, a son of the late Scat

Daddy (Johannesburg), both set to shuttle to Coolmore this year.

“Saxon Warrior and Mendelssohn combine Group 1-winning excellence at two with remarkable performances at three,” said Paddy Oman, head of Coolmore Australia sales and nominations. Continued on page 2>>

Racing NewsRoyal Ascot still on cards as Everest slot holders circle for Santa Ana Lane

At least three The Everest (1200m) slot holders have swamped the owners of T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) in the wake of Saturday’s impressive victory, but the interest is unlikely to skittle plans for an overseas campaign.

Michael Ramsden, the manager of the William Street syndicate who own the Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane, revealed yesterday that the star sprinter remained on track for the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) in Hong Kong later this month. Racing News page 20

“They are both by exceptional sires, have stallions’ pedigrees and will suit the Australian broodmare population. They’re two very exciting prospects and offer Australian breeders the best of international form and bloodlines.”

Both horses were trained by Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien, while Saxon Warrior was an outstanding two-year-old, winning all three of his starts, including the Racing Post Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) in which he defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy).

At his first start as a three-year-old, the colt showed a devastating turn of foot in the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), again beating Roaring Lion alongside subsequent Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Masar (New Approach) and Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Expert Eye (Acclamation) in the British Classic.

The son of Deep Impact also finished runner-up in both the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Sandown and the Irish Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Leopardstown, with the latter proving to be the final start of his career.

Saxon Warrior is out of Group 1 winner Maybe (Galileo), making him a brother to Listed-placed filly Pavlenko.

Maybe herself is out of Listed-winner Sumora (Danehill), who also produced Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed mare Promise To Be True (Galileo). Further back this is the same family as Group 1 winners Dancing Rain (Danehill Dancer) and Dr Devious (Ahonoora).

The Classic winner will be joined at Jerrys Plains in 2019 by Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Gr 1, 1m) winner Mendelssohn, the second son of Scat Daddy to be announced on the roster in three days after American Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) was revealed to be also spending the southern hemisphere covering season in Australia.

Mendelssohn was a well-travelled colt who raced 13 times for four wins including three times at stakes level. He also finished runner-up as a juvenile in the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Newmarket and occupied the same position in the Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) as a three-year-old, but arguably his best performance came when he won the UAE Derby (Gr 2, 1900m) by an astonishing 18 and a half lengths.

Purchased at the Keeneland September Yearling for a sale-topping US$3 million, Mendelssohn is out of Leslie’s Lady (Tricky Creek), making him a half-brother to 11-time Grade 1 winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) and Grade 1 winner and successful sire Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday).

Scat Daddy, meanwhile, is already beginning to make a name for himself as a sire of sires. His exploits as a grandsire have been well advertised by his son No Nay Never, whose first crop of runners in Europe yielded 38 winners, with Group 1 winner Ten Sovereigns among his eight stakes scorers.

Saxon Warrior will stand for a fee of $24,750 (inc GST), while Mendelssohn will stand for $17,600 (inc GST).

Seven for Deep FieldThe Stuart Kendrick-trained Chevy Nova (2 g ex Nova Star by Iglesia) became the seventh individual winner for first-season Newgate Farm resident Deep Field (Northern Meteor) when he landed the Craft Beer & Food Maiden Handicap (1000m) by the narrowest of margins on debut at the Sunshine Coast yesterday. Eric The Eel (Olympic Glory) ran second, while Ramblin’ Man (Magic Albert) was a further length and a quarter away in third. The juvenile was purchased by his trainer for $20,000 from the Newgate draft at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, while his win follows hot on the heels of Dig Deep’s Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) success on

Saturday where he became the second stakes winner for Deep Field, joining Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) scorer Cosmic Force.

Inglis call for expressions of interest for The Everest slotConnections of sprinters seeking to gain a berth in the third running of The Everest (1200m) will be given two opportunities to do so after Inglis have called for official expressions of interest to fill their slot for 2019, while GPI Racing is selling its place in the line-up for this year’s edition of the $14 million contest, which will be run at Randwick on October 13. Inglis will be giving priority to Inglis graduates that have paid up for an Inglis Race Series, past or present. Owners or trainers who are interested in competing in the race are encouraged to express

their interest by contacting Inglis managing director Mark Webster on [email protected] or 0419 610 809.

McEvoy to ride boom colt ChenierKerrin McEvoy has been booked to ride impressive debut winner Chenier (Medaglia d’Oro) when the Anthony Freedman-trained juvenile tests his Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) credentials in a handicap (1400m) at Sandown on Wednesday. "Kerrin McEvoy is coming down from Sydney to ride him with a view to riding him in the Champagne," Freedman's racing manager Brad Taylor said. "We knew he was very good but you never go to the races thinking they are going to run away and win by six lengths."

Aristia out to win second OaksConnections of Aristia (Lohnro) are hoping for a dry week in Sydney to give the three-year-old the best chance to become the first filly in more than a decade to claim the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) - ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) double. Aristia has finished third in her last three outings, including the Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as the Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m), despite being unsuited by testing underfoot conditions. "I think she is going better than in the spring but we are not getting the track that we probably need," co-trainer Simon Zahra said. "And obviously Verry Elleegant is going better. She's flying. We're hoping for a drier track on Saturday and if we get that, I think she will be competitive.”

Aliferous to back up in the OaksIn other Oaks news, Kris Lees has indicated Saturday’s Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Aliferous (Hinchinbrook) will make a quick return to the track in the $1 million contest

at Randwick this weekend. Aliferous secured her third career success when prevailing by a neck on Saturday and she is a $21 chance for the Oaks, the market for which is headed by $2 favourite Verry Elleegant (Zed).

Hartnell up for another possible clash with Winx

Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) third Hartnell (Authorized) could also return to action quickly with Kerrin McEvoy having been booked to

partner the seven-year-old in the QEII Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick on Saturday, although a final decision over his participation will be made during the week. Should he line-up, Hartnell will clash with Winx (Street Cry) for the eighth occasion since first locking horns with the wondermare in the 2015 renewal of the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

Boss picks up Sydney Cup rideFresh from his victory aboard Brutal (O’Reilly) in the Doncaster Mile, Glen Boss is expected to ride Saturday’s Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m) winner Gallic Chieftain (Tamayuz) in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) this weekend. Gallic Chieftain is set to shoulder 51.5 or 52 kilograms on Saturday, which will rule regular partner Damian Lane out of riding. “We haven’t finalise things yet, but a change is needed due to the weight,” trainer Archie Alexander told Racing.com. “There was absolutely nothing wrong with Damian’s ride, but he had to push himself to get down to yesterday's weight.”

Golden Eagle awaits BrutalThe inaugural running of the Golden Eagle (1500m), a $7 million four-year-old only contest run at Rosehill in November, will be the target for Doncaster Mile winner Brutal should he stay in training next season. “It probably bounces one of two ways - he’s going to go to the paddock and be sold for huge money and retire, or he’s going to be sold for huge money and go on (and race at four),” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes told RSN927’s Correct Weight. “Obviously the next natural progression for him would be the $7 million Golden Eagle because, in a roundabout way, it’s a George Ryder without Winx in the race.”

Shoals retiredThree-time Group 1 winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock) has been retired following her eighth-place finish in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) yesterday. "She pulled up a little sore after the race,” assistant trainer Sam Freedman told RSN 927 yesterday. “She is better this

morning escaping serious injury, but in any case she's retired now and has run her last race for us. She'll go off to stud now.” Shoals won seven of her 15 starts, amassing $2,535,270 in prize-money.

All Aged next for FundamentalistThe Lindsay Park-trained Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt), who finished 11th in the Doncaster Mile on Saturday, will head to the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 20. “She’s pulled up well. She’d had a month between runs, so she wasn’t too bad,” co-trainer David Hayes told Racing.com. Fundamentalist has won two of her 17 starts, although she has finished runner-up in Group 1 company on three occasions.

Fifty Stars spelledIn other Lindsay Park news, Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars) - who finished 12th in the Doncaster Mile - is set for a spell having won

two of his five starts this campaign, landing the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m). “He’s done a good job this campaign - he just got a really bad run in transit (in the Doncaster),” Hayes also told Racing.com. “He was four and five wide the trip and from barrier 24 (which he drew before scratchings) that sometimes happens.”

Whypeeo and Keen Array to trialFormer Lindsay Park representative Keen Array (Bel Esprit) will trial for new trainer Toby Edmonds at the Gold Coast today. The five-year-old, who won the 2017 renewal of the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), will be joined by stable companion Whypeeo (I Am Invincible), a dual Listed winner who ran second in last year’s Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m), in trial six of 18, with a view to establishing running plans for the winter carnival. "We will see which way to go after they trial on Monday," Edmonds said.

Inquiries under way into Rocky, Toowoomba errorsTwo investigations are on-going into recent administrative errors. Yesterday, Curdled (All Too Hard) was declared as running fourth in the Toowoomba Plastics Plate (1100m) when he had in fact finished eighth and Cool Drafts (Captain Sonador) had finished fourth. Curdled, who carried saddlecloth five, finished on the fence while Cool Drafts, number 15, was out wide. Betting agencies paid on Curdled being fourth as weight was declared before stewards discovered the mistake. Stewards have subsequently asked for a review of the practices of the Toowoomba judges. Meanwhile, the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission have announced an independent investigation after Plain 'N' Simple (Casino Prince) ran at Rockhampton as stablemate Authadane (Authorized) last week. Trainer Julieann Lancaster has pleaded guilty to a negligence charge over the mistake but has not been sentenced.

Brown back in full swingVictorian apprentices’ title leader Ethan Brown, who is apprenticed to Mick Kent but received a large number of rides from Darren Weir prior to his disqualification, has been granted an extension to ride the final four metropolitan winners needed to outride his claim having originally been due to finish his apprenticeship last Friday. Brown also issued a positive bulletin on his wellbeing. "I found myself in a bit of a rut and got a bit heavy but I'm starting to get back into the swing of things," he said. "What happened couldn't have happened at a worse time but Mick's been great. He told me to clear my head and sort myself out. I was getting close to coming out of my time with four winners to go but there's no-one to blame. It's how life goes sometimes."

Ramazotti continues Petagna’s runRamazzotti (Per Incanto) made a taking debut at Pukekohe yesterday to continue the fine run of form for owner Lib Petagna, who won the New

Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) with Nicoletta (Savabeel) at Te Aroha on Saturday having also won a handicap (1400m) with the improving Santa Catarina (Savabeel) earlier on the card. “Gate speed and professionalism, that was the key,” co-trainer Andrew Forsman said in relation to Ramazzotti. “She had a bit of trial experience before Christmas, had a break and then trialled up really well leading into this. We thought she could do that today.”

Group 1 marks milestone for ForsmanThe victory of Nicoletta also brought up the 100th top-tier success for Forsman, while the win was the 20th New Zealand stakes success for Forsman and co-trainer Murray Baker this season, equalling their record set in 2017-2018. “Someone had told me during the week that the next stakes win would make it one hundred for Murray and I training together, so I was aware of it,” Forsman said. “To tell the truth I don’t tend to focus on that sort of thing as my days are full on enough with the business, but I was feeling pretty good about it all afterwards.”

Blow for Robinson with Boots ‘N’ All’s deathCanterbury trainer Lance Robinson has suffered a major loss after stable star Boots ‘N’ All (Perfectly Ready) died during the week after suffering an adverse reaction to an antibiotic. The ten-race winner was undergoing a routine treatment from Robinson’s stable vet when he suffered a fatal heart attack during the procedure. “It was just a freak thing, a one-in-a-million happening,” Robinson said. “Our vet was here going about his work and one minute the horse was fine and the next he was gone. Everyone involved with him is devastated as he was more than just a horse, he was like a member of the family.”

Travis next for SuperaThe Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa on April 27 is the next target for Supera (Savabeel) following her runner-up effort in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes on Saturday. “While she has been fresh the 1600 metres has suited her, but we think her future

is over 2000m metres or more,” co-trainer Ken Kelso said. “She ate up nicely on Saturday night and was very bright this morning so the plan is to go to the Travis next and then she might head to the paddock after that. She’s only lightly raced so there is plenty ahead of her and we think that next season could be her best.”

40 for Deep ImpactGran Alegria (2 f ex Tapitsfly by Tapit) became the 40th Group 1 winner for Shadai Farm flagbearer Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) when she landed the Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Chukyo yesterday. Shigeru Pink Dia (Daiwa Major) finished two and a half lengths down in second, while there was a neck back to Chrono Genesis (Bago) in third. Click here to watch the replay.

90 for SavabeelWaikato Stud resident Savabeel (Zabeel) sired

his 90th stakes winner when Rattan (5 g ex Grand Princess by Last Tycoon) landed the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) at Sha Tin yesterday. Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook) finished a neck behind in second, while hot-favourite Mr Stunning (Exeed And Excel) finished a further half-length back in third.

International

129 for Shamardal Also at Longchamp, Darley stalwart Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) sired his 129th stakes winner when Morgan Le Faye (5 m ex Molly Malone by Lomitas) stayed on strongly to land the Prix Zarkava (Listed, 2100m). Shahnaza (Azamour) finished second, while Lady Sidney (Mr Sidney) was a further length back in third. Shamardal is standing at Kildangan Stud for a private fee, while his exploits as a stallion were handsomely advertised by the recent Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) success of Blue Point, who - like Morgan Le Faye - carries the colours of Godolphin.

25 for Le Havre Montfort Et Preaux resident Le Havre (Noverre) was provided with his 25th stakes winner when Platane (3 f ex Modestie by Nayef) made is two wins from two starts this season in the Prix Vanteaux (Gr 3, 1800m) at Longchamp yesterday. The three-year-old prevailed by a neck over Etoile (Siyouni), with the front two pulling four and a half lengths clear of Lady Te (Tertullian) in third, completing a double for trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias and jockey Maxime Guyon. Le Havre is currently standing for a fee of €45,000.

Hat-trick for Shaman The Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained Shaman (3 c Shamardal - Only Green by Green Desert) secured his third consecutive success when prevailing by a neck in the Prix La Force (Gr 3, 1800m) at Longchamp yesterday. A winner of the Prix Omnium II (Listed, 1600m) on his seasonal reappearance at Saint-Cloud, the three-year-old made a successful transition to Pattern company when fending off the challenge of Rockemperor (Holy Roman Emperor), appreciating the step up in trip. Roman Candle (Le Havre) was two lengths away in third. A Wertheimer homebred, he hails from the family of dual Group 1 winner Occupandiste (Kaldoun).

Winning return for Ghaiyyath Ghaiyyath (4 c Dubawi - Nightime by Galileo) continued on his upward trajectory when securing a first Group 2 success in the Prix D’Harcourt (Gr 2, 2000m) later on the Longchamp card. The four-year-old has now won four of his five starts having suffered a truncated campaign at three, but he looks more than capable of making for lost time judged on the evidence of his length and a half success over Soleil Marin (Kendargent), who brought up a quinella for Godolphin. Intellogent (Intello) finished three and a half lengths away in third, while Ghaiyyath is a half-brother to Man O War Stakes (Gr 1, 11f) winner Zhukova (Fastnet Rock).

Cimeara successful on switch Cimeara (4 f Vocalised - Gold Mirage by Galileo) made a winning start for Joseph O’Brien when securing a half-length success in the Noblesse Stakes (Listed, 1m4f) at Cork yesterday. Previously trained by Jim Bolger, the four-year-old notched a brace last July - winning the Stanerra Stakes (Group 3, 1m6f) and the Vinnie Roe Stakes (Listed, 1m6f) - and she completed the cross-stable hat-trick when defeating favourite Who’s Steph (Zoffany), with the same margin back to Warnaq (Arcano) in third.

Italian Listed prize for O’JukeO’Juke (4 g Jukebox Jury - O’Keefe by Peintre Celebre) was back to winning ways again in claiming the Premio Regione Toscana (Listed, 2200m) at Pisa yesterday. Royal Ascot still on cards as Everest slot holders circle for Santa Ana Lane

Ramsden said a deal for Santa Ana Lane to run in this year’s The Everest would not be finalised any time soon.

“I know a few of The Everest slot owners and it varies. Some like to wait until the last minute and others like to knock them all out early,” he said.

“He is nominal favourite for The Everest at the moment, so if you own a slot I guess you want to get the horse who looks like it has a good chance.

“He is a very consistent horse. He doesn’t run badly - it just takes him one run to get going.

“Apart from The Everest last year when it was really wet, he is pretty bulletproof, so I can understand why they want to lock him up.”

Ramsden celebrated a Group 1 double at Randwick on Saturday, with the Melbournian also sharing in the ownership of Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winning three-year-old Brutal (O’Reilly).

The Hawkes Racing-trained colt is expected to be spelled following Saturday’s maiden Group 1 win, a victory that dramatically enhanced his appeal as a stallion prospect.

“That was only his seventh start, so to win a Doncaster is pretty good I reckon,” he said.

“I am pretty sure that will be it for the autumn and we’ll see what happens next prep. The Golden Eagle would be enticing, I suppose, and there are a few races over (Melbourne) Cup week, so we will see how he goes.

“I think he is probably a sprinter-miler and as a stallion prospect you probably wouldn’t go further. He might get a Cox Plate distance as he gets older, but he looks like a sprinter-miler even though he is bred to go a bit further.”

Ramsden did not rule out a stud securing an interest in Brutal before his next campaign.

“There has always been a bit of interest but he hadn’t won a Group 1,” he said.

“As a three-year-old colt this year he would be at the top of the list in what the studs would want.

“There aren’t too many three-year-olds who have won at Group 1 level in open company, so he will be popular.

“New Zealand, certainly being an O’Reilly, would also have some interest in him. Things will perhaps emerge in the next few weeks. He is still pretty immature, so there is a fair bit more to come I think.”

At least three The Everest (1200m) slot holders have swamped the owners of T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Santa Ana

Lane (Lope De Vega) in the wake of Saturday’s impressive victory, but the interest is unlikely to skittle plans for an overseas campaign.

The Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot in June is also on the agenda, with the intense interest for Santa Ana Lane to be secured for The Everest unlikely to jeopardise his planned international campaign.

“We have a few calls from slot holders but we are not in a hurry to do anything at the moment. We will go to Hong and see how we

go from there,” Ramsden told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“It depends on the horse but I think Anthony thinks he can (go to the UK and return for The Everest). He is a good doer so you don’t want him to go out (for a spell) for too long.

“I think one of the UK horses (US Navy Flag) came out for The Everest after winning the July Cup, so I don’t know why he couldn’t. He could have one run into The Everest like he did with the T J.

“After Hong Kong we might bring him back to Australia but at the moment we are going to Hong Kong and Ascot.”

Santa Ana Lane, who won his fifth Group 1 sprint when scoring at Randwick on Saturday, is the $5 pre-post favourite for this year’s The Everest.

Last year, he represented the slot owned by auction house Inglis but his performance was impacted by a Heavy 9 surface, finishing sixth behind Redzel (Snitzel).

had the busiest morning at Easter that we have had at any complex, which is a great sign, and all Inglis can do is get the complex, the book and the people and they have done that terrifically well. Now it is up to the buyers.”

Rob Sims, Tyreel Stud“Inspections have been steady. We started showing on Wednesday of last week and today has been our busiest day by far. The catalogue is significantly smaller and as a result I feel like there has been a more relaxed feel around the sales ground. This has allowed the vendors to show their horses off nicely and the inspectors have the time and space to see the yearlings on the ground – it is a really nice sales environment. Over half draft has the usual quality, but there is a tail to my draft and

Peter O’Brien, Segenhoe Stud Australia“I think if you speak to all the internationals, and basically every buyer, they think that keeping the Easter Sale concise at two

days is a terrific move. Combing Book 1 and Book 2 there

was a danger in doing that that those lesser horses

would be lost. But Sebastian (Hutch) and Jonathan (D’Arcy)

should be complimented about the efforts that they are putting in.“A lot of people get scared off looking at the Easter catalogue because they can’t afford the horses. Last year those horses got lost and this year Inglis has recognised that and they have made a great effort and overall I think the sale will be tremendous.“The quality is always great here. We have

like all sales this year the bottom to middle of it will be more difficult to find them homes, so I would like to see more activity on them."

Johnny McKeever, international bloodstock agent“I feel overall there are some absolutely stunning yearlings here and I would imagine the quality is as good, if not better, than the past few years. Because of the smaller catalogue viewing the yearlings has been very easy and straight-forward. We have plenty of time to do it and there hasn’t been much queuing and everyone you speak to, the vendors say that they have had steady viewings all the time.

How do you feel your 2019 draft compares to your draft for 2018?

Our draft this year is similar to last in that it comprises yearlings by a variety of stallions and runners. However, it is slightly smaller numerically than it was last year, with a focus on quality over quantity.

Of your colts which is / are your standout / standouts? The colts are fairly even. The two standouts would be Lot 109 Pierro

- Maree Basse (Royal Applause) and Lot 300, which is Fastnet Rock - Taqaseem (Medaglia d’Oro) .

Of your fillies which is / are your standout / standouts? The fillies are also fairly even. The two standouts would be Lot 114

Fastnet Rock - Midnight Ballet (Peintre Celebre) and Lot 294, which is Fastnet Rock - Surf Poet (Charge Forward) .

Which lot do you think has improved most since the beginning of the prep?

Lot 159, which is Street Boss - Omniscient (Exceed And Excel) .

How do you think the sale statistics will compare to the 2018 renewal?

I think the sale will be similar to last year. The condensed catalogue should keep it at a good level. I am just hoping that it will be evenly spread around.

Who do you think will be the leading sire at the sale?

The obvious ones – Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

For anyone visiting Sydney for the first time, which restaurant would you recommend and what should they order?

Café Sydney has a great view and is good all-round.

Normal brilliance for Beauty Generation in Chairman’s Trophy cruise

knew he was easily superior to the late-closing Eagle Way (More Than Ready).

This afternoon’s competition was no match for Beauty Generation, even with the six-time Group 1 winner carrying a five-pound penalty – the day’s shock was left to Rattan (Savabeel), who upturned Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) and Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook) in the earlier Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m).

“Zac came in and said he’d improve for this,” Moore said. “We didn’t squeeze him too much for the run so there’ll be further improvement for the Champions Mile. That’s three weeks away and we’ll keep him ticking over.

“I might trial him; I might ask for a 1000-metre trial or something to top him off.”

Purton revealed that a strong breeze blowing down the back-straight made things that little bit tougher for his mount.

“He was good enough to get the job done,” the winning rider said. “He had to carry extra weight and the one thing I was more concerned about was the wind.

“The headwind down the back-straight is really strong. Having to carry the extra weight – giving weight away to the other horses – it wasn’t going to be easy. To offset that I stayed well away from the rail and made Joao (Moreira) on Conte run into it as well. I thought, if I’ve got to run into it, he can join me and I’d take what I could out of him as well.

“He came into this race a little bit soft today,” he continued. “He had a soft trial and he hasn’t been screwed in his work so he was always going to improve on what he gave us today, so there’s more merit in the win than it may have looked. He went out there and did what we needed him to do.”

Stablemate Eagle Way rattled wide for second and jockey Umberto Rispoli was delighted.

“It was a massive run from the back. We know he is a horse who loves 2000 metres so that’s a nice effort at the mile; he was beaten by the champ, so a good performance,” he said.

Pakistan Star, having his first start for trainer Paul O’Sullivan, appeared as the main threat at the top of the home straight and charged to second before fading out to third, beaten a length and three quarters under Matthew Chadwick.

“That was a good run first-up for the stable.

Normality reigned in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Sha Tin yesterday but there was nothing mundane

about the brilliant Beauty Generation’s (Road To Rock) eighth straight win.

Hong Kong’s champion might have followed the blueprint that has served him so well in reaching high rank in the global standings – galloping to the fore and then rolling onward to victory – but there was no hint of “Beauty fatigue”, not a whiff of boredom at another bloodless triumph; not from the crowd and certainly not from the horse.

“Bored, this horse? Not at all,” trainer John Moore declared as the ring-side spectators cheered yet another picture beneath the winner’s arch with owner Patrick Kwok.

“Romain (Clavreul – work rider) gives me his feedback, and, what I can see, the horse loves where he is and he doesn’t like getting beat. Even when he’s on the small track every morning, he wants to pass horses. He’s just amazing.”

That competitive instinct is so often manifest stable-side with a mean-spirited bite or lunge at his groom, Lau Wai-kit. Purton believes the horse just wants competition to show he’s the boss.

“He loves racing. He wants to get out there and do it more often!” the rider said.

There was a strong suggestion in the champion jockey’s words that he does too. And who wouldn’t? Beauty Generation is a superstar at the peak of his abilities and the consensus after this latest triumph was that he should be as potent as ever in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at the end of the month – after that, he could test his mettle internationally in Japan’s Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) in June.

Beauty Generation had this race in the bag when Purton shook his reins 300 metres out. The rider looked left for dangers approaching the 200-metre pole and saw Pakistan Star (Shamardal) sprinting in pursuit; hands and heels sufficed to see off that rival; another glance with 100 metres to go; one more for surety inside the final 50 metres and Purton

leader’s pace and elected to advance his mount Beat The Clock to pressure the leader, forcing the pace through 21.64s for the second 400 metres.

“The race planned out beautifully - the top two went against each other, maybe a touch early and our stamina kicked in the finish,” Gibson said.

Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock went toe-to-toe for the better part of the final 400 metres, playing into the hands of Rattan who used his best asset to finish over the top of them.

“The horse is always in great condition, he trialled like a very good horse against Beauty Generation so we knew we had the horse in the right shape for a race like today,” the trainer said.

The five-year-old, whose previous wins had been at 1400 metres and a mile, trialled in blinkers and Gibson felt the addition of that gear was required on race day if the horse was to be competitive over 1200 metres.

“We all thought going shorter with blinkers would be a good option for the horse,” he said.

They went a bit slower than we thought, so he travelled a bit too keenly and I had to take off a bit sooner than I wanted to, so it just didn’t play into our hands today,” the rider said.

A Group 1 placegetter in Australia in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) when trained by Anthony Cummings, Beauty Generation (6 g Road To Rock - Stylish Bel by Bel Esprit) has now won 16 of his 29 starts for earnings of $13,201,637.

He is one of three named foals out of the unraced Bel Esprit (Royal Academy) mare Stylish Bel, who is a half-sister to the stakes-winning pair Victory Trump (Euclase) and Savage Attack (Made Of Gold), making him a brother to the Singapore-based dual winner Steel Cutter.

His second dam, Stylish Victory (Durham Ranger), was stakes-placed in Adelaide, while his third dam, Romantic Peace (Mikado), who produced five winners from eight foals to race, is a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Hivortic (Manihi).

Beauty Generation was purchased by

Hermes Syndications formNZ$60,000 from the Highden Park at the 2014 edition of the Karaka Sale.

His sire, Road To Rock (Encosta De Lago), has sired three stakes winners to date and he stood for a fee of NZ$4,500 (plus GST) at Wellfield Lodge in 2018.

Rattan spoils the big two’s Sprint Cup party

Rattan (Savabeel) shocked two top-tier winners in Mr Stunning (Exceed And Excel) and Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook) to score an unexpected victory in the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m) under jockey Chad Schofield earlier on the Sha Tin card.

“If we were going to beat those two top horses, it was going to be today with the allowance,” trainer Richard Gibson said of the $17 success.

The newly-acquainted Mr Stunning and Zac Purton controlled the race from the get-go, running 24.91s for the first 400 metres. However, Joao Moreira was unhappy with the

28 and another on that path is Dark Dream (All American), who put his Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) fourth behind him with a smart score in the Class 1 Harlech Handicap (2000m).

Six of the Derby defeated lined up, including the John Size-trained runner-up Waikuku (Harbour Watch), but it was the Purton-ridden Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) winner who came out ahead.

“The plan is to go to the QEII,” trainer Frankie Lor said. “He was only rated 104 so he needed to run well here to get up to a mark that would get him into the QEII, so he’s done what we needed him to do.”

Purton, who sealed a four-timer to take his total to 98 for the term, feels that there is better to come from the four-year-old.

“He’s just not the finished product yet,” he said. “His behaviour was much better behind the gate today; I took him out the back, tried to keep him as quiet as I could and they put him in later. He handled that better and because of that he began well and put himself in the right spot.

“The race was run to suit but he did have to make a long run, which I knew he was capable of. He did wander a bit in the straight and it wasn’t until I gave him a couple of cracks that he wanted to go. That’s why I’ve thought blinkers would be better.

“We haven’t seen his best yet. It’s still to come,” he added.

Moreira was satisfied with top-weight Waikuku’s run in finishing four lengths seventh after racing three wide without cover from gate 12.

“The track is fast so that is an advantage to the horses racing prominently,” the former champion jockey said. “If we dragged him back, as we did in the Derby, he wouldn’t have had any chance. John (Size) asked me to gamble and see if we could slot him in midfield with cover.

“If I could have got in, it could have been a different race. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to and he didn’t run a bad race. I’m not totally disappointed with him. He’s a trier.”

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday, 10 April.

Rattan carried 123lb to win, five pounds less than the Group 1-penalised Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock.

“With the five-pound difference, I thought we just might have the edge on them,” Gibson said.

Schofield also felt the race was run to suit, with Hong Kong’s two top-rated sprinters getting into a tough fight a long way out.

“Both Zac and I jumped really quickly and Zac obviously wanted to lead with no pressure so I just wanted to hunt up and make him do a bit of work, inject a bit of speed, but I eventually took a sit and got cover,” Schofield said.

“I wanted to go nice and early because my horse was dropping back in trip and he’d tough it for longer than the other two could. He only got there late but it was a good win: very satisfying!”

“He’s a very underrated horse and he keeps flying under the radar. He’s done us all proud.”

Schofield has won five races on Rattan and has been aboard the gelding in all but eight of his 21 starts.

“I’m very happy for the horse - I’ve won a lot of races on him now. I’ve ridden him right from Class 4 and for him to beat the two best sprinters in Hong Kong today was a great feeling and well done to Richard and his team,” he said.

Gibson added: “Chad knows the horse so well, we thought both scenarios would be good if the horse jumped well we would be cool and relaxed, and if he jumped badly we would be cool and react.”

Zac Purton, however, felt that third-placed Mr Stunning was not necessarily undone by Beat The Clock taking the race to him.

“No, he was just disappointing,” Purton said.

Moreira, on the other hand, was pleased with Beat The Clock’s effort.

“He put on a good fight with the favourite but it is hard when you have to fight one and then you have another one coming and giving you a fight. Still, I’m pleased with his run,” the Brazilian said.

Rattan will now target the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) on Champions Day in three weeks’ time.

Gibson responded, “Yes, of course,” when

asked about Rattan’s participation in that international feature.

Rattan will face stiff opposition. Both Mr Stunning and Beat The Clock are expected to take their places, while Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega), who won Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick, is also engaged.

Schofield is hoping for a truer pace in the Group 1.

“Hopefully, in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize, there can be a lot more tempo than there was today. There wasn’t a lot of speed in the first half of the race today and if there’s a lot of speed up front he’ll appreciate that and could finish even better,” Schofield said.

Rattan (6 g Savabeel - Grand Princess by Last Tycoon) has won seven of his 21 starts, placing on a further seven occasions and amassing HK$11,891,800 in prize-money.

He is one of ten named foals, nine of whom have raced and six of whom have won out of the winning Last Tycoon (Try My Best) mare Grand Princess, making him a half-brother to a pair of Listed winners in Her Royal Highness (Volksraad) and Captain’s Command (Volksraad). Rattan’s second dam, Grand Jette (Spectacular Love), was a Group 3 winner as well as being Group 1 placed.

Rattan was the last foal out of Grand Princess, who slipped to Savabeel (Zabeel) in 2014 and He’s Remarkable (Pentire) the following year, after which she was retired.

2008 f. by Falkirk. 2009 f. Thyme, by Thorn Park. Unraced.2010 g. Falcon, by Falkirk. Placed in NZ and Singapore, 2d Singapore TC Initiation P.-twice, 3d Singapore TC Initiation P.-twice.2013 g. RATTAN, by Savabeel. 7 wins from 1200m to 1600m, HK$11,891,800, to 2018-19, HKJC Sprint Cup, Gr.2, Panasonic Cup, Vengeance of Rain H., Garden Road H., Tak Wah H., Front Load Washing Machine H., BMW Centenary H., 2d HKJC Kwangtung Cup, Maurice H., Albert H., Bullish Luck H., Pitt H., Daisy H., 3d HKJC Chinese Club Challenge Cup, Gr.3, 4th HKJC Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup, Gr.1.

Analysis: The Richard Gibson-trained Rattan caused an upset in first-time blinkers, accounting for the two market principals, Beat The Clock and Mr Stunning, who somewhat set this contest up for the winner by taking each other on turning for home. Given a pitch-perfect ride by Chad Schofield, Rattan occupied the box-seat position racing prominently on the rail and while he was caught a little flat-footed as the front two quickened through the 400m, he picked up well when switched into the middle of the track and got up close home to prevail by a neck. Beat The Clock was a neck in front of Mr Stunning when the pair met over course and distance in January and the margin was half a length this time around, although the latter was returning from a 77-day break and shaped as if needing the outing late.

Unraced.2017 f. by Tavistock. 2018 c. by Tarzino.

Analysis: Beauty Generation recorded his eighth successive win (seven this season) with another facile, front-running victory, Zac Purton dictating sensible fractions in the early part of the contest before lengthening nicely in the straight as his eight rivals came under pressure. Asked to quicken for a furlong, Beauty Generation soon put the race to bed and was eased towards the line in what proved a routine performance. Eagle Way, a stable companion of the winner, made sustained late headway dropped in trip, never threatening to catch the winner but shaping well from off the speed. Pakistan Star ran one of his better races, chasing Beauty Generation in the straight and paying for those exertions in the closing stages, but keeping on for third regardless. Singapore Sling proved one-paced but ran with credit dropped in grade.
