GOLD COASTERS

the best of the Gold Coastwill take you to

Bill Thangkam born in Sydney, 24 years old, graduated from Bond University, enjoys challenges of personal and professional development, meeting new people, travelling, golf, UFC, muay thai, basketball and community volunteer work. Has been living on the Gold Coast for 23 years.

The Gold Coast is famous for its beaches, weather and laid-back lifestyle. I believe the name 'Gold' Coast is meaningful and provides prosperity for its people and businesses. It is a beautiful place in Australia that you must see for yourself whether it’s with the family or friends, for business or for leisure.

Thitthita Aumpavanon (Jop) is studying a bachelor of Graphic Design at Griffith University. I have only been living on the Gold Coast for about 2 months. I used to live in Brisbane for 2 years and here is very different. The Gold Coast is a very exciting place to me with a very good vibe! Work feels like a holiday. I really love the beach and sea. The Gold Coast … I love it!.

My name is Junior Boonyarit. I have been living on the Gold Coast for 10 years. What I like most about the Gold Coast is the geography of the location, which consists of both the ocean and inland tropical rainforests and waterfalls. The Gold Coast is a place where you can enjoy outdoor activities whenever you have time. And if you don't have the time you can always enjoy the perfect weather. By living on the Gold Coast you cannot help but to adopt an outdoor lifestyle. The weather is almost always perfect. One activity I highly recommend is stand up paddle boarding at Currumbin Creek. It gave me a cherished experience and I'm sure it'll have the same affect on you. Whether you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere or a touch of city life, the Gold Coast has it all. There are places that are family orientated and also places for the unattached. It is exciting to see in the past few years an increase in the number of quality and funky cafes opening their doors. Of course one of the main selling points here are the beautiful beaches, but the various choices of cuisines are also popular. I truly believe it is one of the best cities to live in and consider myself lucky to be able to enjoy all the things available here.

Design Trends

Our Southern Hemisphere’s Coastal charms - Surfers Paradise is on the Gold Coast, that stretches over three iconic kilometers of golden sun, sand, and surf so unique in its natural beauty, that you need to come and experience it rst hand! Imagine yourself, each day awakened by the clear bright blue sky, and it’s fresh sea breeze, that dashes pass you, making itself known very clearly that you are very near the ocean, with its hint of salt taste to your lips. The sun’s rays beat down almost instantly, giving you that wonderful sun-kiss welcome…

There are approximately 70km of beaches altogether, along this eastern coastline, where the average water temperature is 22 degrees. The strip of beaches is from Southport all the way through to Coolangatta, with the best surf beach being Kirra Beach. Since 1875, South-port was a secluded holiday destination for the upper Brisbane residents. Around 1950, the inated prices of real estate and goods in the region, lead to the nickname ‘Gold Coast’. On 23rd October 1958, the Town of South Coast was renamed Town of Gold Coast. In 2018, the Gold Coast will host the Commonwealth Games (1). There is a sense of a creative cultural strategy boiling here. New visions to elevate the Gold Coast to a destination of more glamour, “Jewel” (2) for Wanda Group, is an example, of over a hectare of prime beachfront, set for one luxury ve-star hotel and two serviced apartment towers. The estimated construction budget is $970 million. This is sure to bedazzle all. Mr Wang Jianlin, Chairman of Wanda Group, has an estimated net worth of $14 billion, making him Number 1 on Forbes China Rich List. Gold Coast’s development boom has its good and bad points, which has some locals unhappy. An estimated $7.5 billion will be the cost for the Broadwater Marine Terminal Project, that includes a casino, cruise ship terminal, luxury hotels, low-rise residential buildings and retail developments. In order to proceed with construction, many issues would have to be addressed such as environmental and technical studies on the scale of the development proposed. A Gold Coast landmark would have to be the Q1 building, which take an inspired Sydney 2000 Olympic torch and the Sydney Opera House approach to the once tallest residential tower until 2011. Q1’s residence, spa (3), restaurant, and observation deck(4) is a must experience. What a great time to be coming as the Surfers Paradise Festivals are fun lled that is going to keep you completely entertained from 3rd to 18th April 2015. They will illuminate your senses with Glow (7), enjoy a sculpture trail of 15 giant koalas (8), an initiative of the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation. By night, the pyrotechnics with sea re will light the skies with cutting-edge reworks. By day, you can venture into extreme fun with ying lessons in one propeller planes that glides along the coastline, capturing a glimpse of whales and ship wrecks, at bird’s eye view or simply skydiving. There are Water Jetpacks (6) that will elevate and propel you with water into the air or there are Auditions for the extras of Hollywood movie ‘Pirates of the Carribean 5’, which is set in various sites within Gold Coast (14). When winding down for the day, try enjoying authentic taste of Thai food likeMulti-award winning Chiangmai Thai, Bangkok Thai, and At Thai, just to name a few. There is a romantic restaurant Oskars (11), that would impress a special someone. Don’t forget to enjoy your dining experience with a chilled glass of champagne and a winning view! Other great nds is a Japanese restaurant – Kiyomi (12), the word means a rare Japanese citrus fruit, a hybrid of mandarin and sweet orange. The décor here has taken the works of Tokyo-based Houxo Que – a Japanese street artist, featured on their interior walls. The uniqueness of the ambience is that when the space is lit with a orescent UV-light, the artworks glows and plays with an assortment of colors and textures, completing your dining experience. To work o all the food you eat, you can wonder one of the largest night markets - Beachfront Markets (13) including fashion, jewelry, accessories, artworks, photographs, beauty products and home wares. Each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night, treasure hunters, bargain spotters can wander along the coastal stretch of more than 120 market stalls, while live entertainers set a casual mood in heir performance. So come and see for yourself!

Tania Louise EdwardsI have always been interested in Arts & Crafts and in particular pottery and ceramics but have never had the opportunity to do it because I lived in Papua New Guinea for many years. There wasn’t the opportunity to study over there. But when I went to university I did an Art degree mainly in Japanese language with a lot of culture, arts and history. This is where I was introduced to Japa-nese ceramics.

Japanese Aesthetic The Japanese style of ceramics is very different from the West. I found it quite fascinating. In Japan when you look at the ceramics that they have at the museum, it looks really simple and a bit wobbly. When most westerners look at it they may think Oh! It’s just a brown muddy pot. It is because they have a different type of aesthetic but their aesthetics is very refined over thousands of years and what they hold is really special is that kind of Wabi-Sabi it’s like a happy accident. You have control and study to do something but then you also allow the clay to speak for itself and when you fire it you allow the fire to have its handprint on the clay. So the idea is you set out to make something specific, but each piece has its unique handprint.

Wood Fire & Naked RakuWith an interest in the Japanese aesthetic style, I studied further and started to get interested in wood fired ceramics and that very natural earthy style. My style of creating ceramics is to individualize each piece, keep an element of randomness, differentiating it from a mass produce factory piece. The type of pottery that I really like is Raku.

Raku is a technique where your clay piece is baked at a relatively low heat for pottery with smoke and produces very distinct beautiful patterns. When you fire it, you take the piece out when it is between 900 to a thousand degrees and plunge it into burning material. The resulting smoke and crackle gives the piece its interesting and beautiful patterns.

One of the reasons that I am attracted to wood firing and Raku is because you have that direct contact with the flame and fire. It’s very challenging. I like the idea that there is this challenge of trying to control all these different elements to create a beautiful piece. And if you look at a nice wood fired piece, you can see the ways that the flame has trav-eled across the piece, giving a small glimpse of how that pattern was made. That’s what I like about it, a functioning art piece.

The Gold Coast Potters Association Inc. Tania joined The Gold Coast Potters Association Inc. on the Gold Coast to practice and develop her artwork. The association goals are to promote pottery as a traditional craft and art form through teaching, demonstrations and exhibitions, for students, hobbyists, professionals and the wider community.

Restaurant review

Please don't glance over the range of Thai Style Salad's, as it is a necessity to indulge in the Mushroom Salad, it's got something, it's got everything but do you think I could get what its secret was out of Sid? No doubt it's one of the stand out dishes. If you like a touch of spice and heat try the Paw Paw Salad. The dishes were accompanied by chilled Semillon Sauvignon Blanc's from New Zealand which marries extremely well with fresh Thai cuisine.

Obviously Friday and Saturday night's can be busy, but if you book early or dine during the week, you can be sure to enjoy the atmosphere and the gorgeous sunset on the boardwalk, which overlooks the Hope Island Marina. Make sure you get there early, ask for what's in season, kick back and enjoy this fantastic dining experience with the help of your host Sid, who works eight days a week.

Next time I'm at Hope Island I'll be back at the House of Siam then jumping on my new Boat heading east.

Until next time eat and live well, Jason

Restaurant review by Jason

ell, its like this, I love the water and I love boats, but I think I love food more than anything because that's the thing that keeps me loving my first two loves.

To stumble across all three on a beautiful barmy autumn afternoon was a dream come true. I had been recommended to go to the House of Siam on the boardwalk at Hope Island and I'm so glad I took my friends advice. I arrived early, so to kill some time I went looking for a cruiser at the local boat brokerage. I was dreaming of both my new lifestyle and my new Thai dining experience. The view over the harbour was one that took meaway to the far north and the pacific islands where I have spent many decades. Vessels at rest, owners maintaining their craft and to my surprise and delight, owners walking their dogs (I'm a huge dog lover!)

Suddenly from my peripheral vision, I see a man approaching me, it's my host, motorcycle fanatic and owner of the House of Siam. Sid was like a brother from another mother, he was so accom-modating. I thought this was because I was reviewing his restaurant but no. Everyone who walked by or entered his domain was greeted with his warm, gracious and inviting nature. It was like being welcomed into your best friends lounge room, but the difference is your best friend has an awesome deck with the best sunset, food and wine.

First up appetizers of Prawn Cakes and Steamed Dim Sims were very tasty. I sampled three outstanding mains, which were the Barramundi Choo Chee Curry, which was a whole fillet of fresh barramundi in a light curry sauce, and the delightful BBQ Duck with crispy skin, I can still taste it now as I'm writing this review. The pick of the mains for me was the Chicken Pad Si Ew which is served with Kailan (Chinese broccoli, and destined to be the next superfood lol) bean sprouts and probably the best soft rice noodles I've ever had in a Thai dish. I assume that Sid has taken his experience from his years running an Italian restaurant and incorporated them in his latest venture at the House of Siam, nice touch Sid!

n spite of his hectic schedule, the Mayor of Gold Coast, Tom Tate, spare his time for Sawasdee Australia team to interview him at his office at the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct, Surfers Paradise.

That very morning we learnt a very exciting news that Gold Coaster and tourist travelling to the Gold Coast are about to have a new tourist attraction added to their must do itinerary which is a diving under the ocean to see the wrecked ship used in the filming of the Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Since our conversations started off lightly with Hollywood news, we asked the Mayor what make Gold Coast so attractive for Hollywood big names to come and film their movies here, Mr. Mayors ‘answers were clearly confident:

“We want to become international and would like to attract the film industry from Hollywood. Look, we have everything here, the nice long stretched beaches, skyscrapers, Gold Coast Hinterland and we have a big open ocean plus a good film studio facilities at Movie World”.

“Angelina Jolie was here filming Unbroken, Dwayne Johnson had chosen Gold Coast to film San Andreas. Now you might run into Johnny Depp who is here for the shooting of Pirates of the Caribbean 5”, he said.

What is Gold Coast in your definition?

It’s a wonderful place to visit and invest, a good place to bring up a family. I have done all 3 things in the Gold Coast and every turn of my journey, there is always something new. We have entrepre-neurial spirit. Gold Coast lets you be creative.

Comparing to other city, I like to say that Brisbane is like an older sister, who has everything. Gold Coast is like Cinderella, people didn’t realize until she needs to re-recognized. Gold Coast is cheeky and glamorous, fun and we think outside the box.

We are the sixth largest city in Australia and the council annual budget is 1.5 billion dollars which is bigger than state budget of Tasmania.

We will be the world stage hosting the Common-wealth Games in 2018 with 72 countries taking part in it. It is the biggest sport event of Australia since Sydney Olympic. I think it is not bad for a regional city.

Is Gold Coast an attractive “Cinderella” to international tourist?

Well, Gold Coast is built on tourism and construction industry. We were first city of the world to have

4 theme parks in one city. Though we are compet-ing with many cities that wanted to attract tourists as well so we need to reinvent ourselves. We need to look at other attraction as well. If we stand still we will lose pace. I am working hard to build Art and Cultural precinct which is here and we are encouraging to have a cruise ship terminal because it’s good for tourism. We need to keep-adding more tourism facilities.

These last 2 years, tourism figures are the best

compare to the last 10 years. We are promoting using “second home strategy”, combining tourism with education where the family of overseas student can travel to visit their children or invest in the property for their children and they can then come and stay longer in Gold Coast.

We have tourists from all over the world traveling to Gold Coast including Australian tourist. We have event all year round.

What about investment in the Gold Coast?

My message to international investors is this: Australia is very safe place. Why Queensland? Because Queenslanders are friendly people. Why Gold Coast? We have 70 km of the beaches and the opportunity that the city council has just changed investment rules and the town plan in which the changes made make it simpler for investor to understand.

On a personal side now, can you please tell us a bit of your family background, especially about your mother who’s Thai?

Yes, my mother’s Thai but I was born in Laos because that’s where my father met my mother when he was working as an engineer in Laos at the time building airports and roads. My mother spoke very good English and was also working in Laos as the secretary of a company. Then I spent some time attending primary school in Thailand. I came to live in Australia when I was 11 until I grad-uated in a higher education and got married to my wife, Ruth. We have 4 kids.

Do you keep your Thai and are any of your children speak Thai?

My children and I go to holiday to Thailand often. And the children enjoy the Thai culture and proud that they are quarter Thai. It gives them complex-ion of olive skin with luk krueng face, which I think is quite nice. I believe that they would have liked to learn more Thai.

For me, when I go to visit my friends in Thailand, I speak Thai quite well. Although I am still talking traditional Thai so any new invented Thai words I would have problem understand it.

I can also sing Thai songs, especially Phu Yai Lee

. The part of the Thai nature, which is welcoming and relaxing part I really enjoy very much.

In future when my busy schedule ease off a bit, I would love to travel more to Thailand perhaps buy a small apartment in a place like Hua Hin or some-where and get to atleast visit once a year, so I will have a place to catch up or reconnect with my Thai friends.

What do you do when you are not working?

Having 4 kids and they have different things that they need to do, all the things in their lives that they do, I want to be part of them. I like being involved on what they do on the weekend if I don’t have any work commitments. That is how I relax and spend time doing away from work. The fact that I can be part of their activities or as part of their journey in some ways is a wonderful thing and it’s blessing.

Do you have a hobby?

Yes I do, I like to collect watches. I enjoy it because it is the thing in which the science, tech-nology, miniaturization and the artistic works all come together in one creation. To me it’s like humanity achievement in one place and it’s better than having painting hanging on the wall. With the watches you can wear it, appreciate it. It’s not about if the watch is expensive or how much it cost, it’s about my connection to that type of watch and depends on the mood of the day, I wear different watch.

How many do you have in your collection?

I think a lot less than my wife’s shoes (laughed really loud).

You seem a very active person, is there anything that can make you sit still and relax, perhaps a good book or your favorite music?

I am not a still person, but as still as I can be is when I take my dog to the beach and watch him play, running around on the beach. My dog, Jaidee, an American bulldog, also has his own instagram account name: jaideebulldog.

Tales from a foreigner

story : Kirsty TurnerPhoto : http://www.tigertemplethailand.com/

f you thought Khaosan Road was just for hippies, think again! Meet Thai students and friendly locals for a night of fun and debauchery at Khaosan Road. This is one of Bangkok’s most vibrant nightlife zones and just about anything can happen here. While Khaosan Road has long been popular with shoestring travellers, these days it also boasts upmarket bars and clubs that attract flash packers and trendy Thai people.

Khaosan Road really comes to life after dark, when the area’s neon signs light up and street side bars blast out music to attract party people as they wander past. There are dozens of bars on the kerb that offer strong cocktails for just a few baht, and these are great places to perch at the start of the evening while watching the surrounding scene unfold.

Gulliver’s Traveler’s Tavern This is one of the oldest establishments on Khaosan Road and can be found at the very end of the street close to the police station. This large air-conditioned bar shows sports matches on large screens scattered around the two floors and offers a good selection of food and drinks. Things really heat up here late at night and the dance floor is a great place to mix and mingle with people for all over the world.

Shamrock Irish Pub Set in the heart of the road, this venue offers nightly live bands that play popular rock and pop covers.

Hippie de Bar Tucked away down a small lane branching off Khaosan Road, this co lour fu l venue offers a v ibrant atmosphere where Thai students and backpackers can mingle while sharing a few beers or a cocktail pitcher.

Brick Bar Venture inside this large bar inside Buddy Lodge to dance to live bands that play upbeat ska and reggae tunes. The atmosphere here is extremely lively and the house band never fails to get people on the dance floor, while enthusiastic patrons can also be seen dancing on the tops of the large wooden tables.

Lava Club and The ClubDance the night away at these two stylish venues, which pump out house, trance and hip hop tunes until the early hours of the morning. The scene here heats up around midnight and lovers of trance music will be in good company as they join the crowds of people on the dance floor.
