I hope this note finds all well. Since the last newsletter--my life certainly changed. In fact, right after I submitted the newsletter--that weekend my husband and I attended a wedding (August 1) in which he officiated--a beautiful affair! A few days afterwards, we were told we should get tested for the COVID-19 test for fear of some individuals may have had it at the ceremony Well, we did (we had already taken the test three times earlier--starting back in June, etc...) My tests turned up POSITIVE---not even my husband (go figure!) From that point we went into a few weeks of quarantine--separate living, eating...etc.. I was blessed not to have had to go the hospital or go on a ventilator. I did have mild symptoms and am just now getting back my sense of smell. For those few weeks, my strength was low along with other physical ailments. It affected my emotional health too. I will say that through my prayer life/Jesus and those thoughts and prayers of many family and friends--I am feeling much better! I can now tell that my strength is coming back! I did take a blood anti-body test and another COVID-19 test at our neighborhood clinic and all is well! My life has taken on a different meaning and appreciation. I again will encourage all Homemakers to get tested if you have not and of course wear your masks--self distance and avoid crowds, etc.. This virus is for real! As it seems like our Homemaker meetings and schedules will never be the same--I would encourage you to encourage others through calls--Zoom meetings and other methods that might be safe for your clubs. Preserve Now ~ Enjoy Later

Hopefully you are enjoying the bounty of your own garden or that of local farmers this summer. Even though the extension kitchen has been void of food preservation workshops this summer, the following resources are available to guide you through the process. Your questions are always welcomed and readily replied to by calling the Extension Office. Share photos and show and tell your summer’s successful canning, freezing or drying.

2020 Homemaker Member Dues

Annual dues for 2020-21 year will be collected individually this year and due to the Extension Office by December 1, 2020. Members will receive a membership form to complete and return with payment in the September lesson materials. Even though club meetings and workshops are not operating as usual it is still important to renew your membership as these funds enable your organization to operate yearlong including Ovarian Cancer support. We look forward to your return to classes that not only provide information but fellowship. Thanks to everyone in advance for your support provided through dues!

Celebrate Online - KEHA Week October 11-17

Even though not a novice idea, the Fayette County Extension Homemaker (www.facebook.com/FayetteCoHM ) and the KEHA (www.facebook.com/OfficialKEHA) Facebook pages are a great way to stay updated on Homemaker news as well as other useful information. Look for daily fun activities to celebrate KEHA Week and when checking these out, don’t forget to like the pages and share.

“All members are encouraged to stay up to date on the current health guidance and to continue your participation in club activities – even if it is very different than “normal.” When you ask KEHA members what they value most from membership in the organization, a common answer is the friendships made. Even if you cannot see each other face to face, there are many opportunities to stay connected with KEHA friends. Think creatively: Make that phone call. Mail a card. Send a text message. Connect on social media. Staying connected and in touch is good for our mental and physical health!” Karen Hill, KEHA President

Ways to Save on Groceries During the Pandemic

You probably have noticed that you are paying a little more for food these days. The COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting supply chain disruptions have caused consumers to pay more for their normal grocery items, especially meats. In fact, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts that we will see our highest grocery price increase since 2011 as overall grocery prices are expected to rise by an average of 3% in 2020.

This increase is coming at a time when many Kentuckians find themselves financially strapped, as some have lost jobs or have had their hours reduced because of the pandemic. Here are some ways you can stretch your food dollars. ● Use online shopping for budgeting. Due to the pandemic, many grocery stores are offering online shopping with no or

reduced pickup fees, so it’s a great time to try purchasing your food online. Not only does shopping online keep you out of the store, but you can use it to closely monitor your spending, cost compare like items and avoid impulse purchases. Some grocery chains also offer additional coupons or incentives for consumers who use their pickup or delivery service. You can use a free grocery store app or website to create a shopping list, meal plan, comparison shop, clip coupons and view local deals.

● Plan ahead. With your family, design a menu for the week so you will know exactly what items you need. Check your pantry for the ingredients you already have. Check local grocery store ads for sales on items that you frequently use. Whether you shop online or in-person, create a shopping list and stick to it. Eat before going in the store. Shopping hungry can result in more impulse buys.

● Buy store brands or generic. Often, these items will be significantly cheaper than the name brand item. ● Look for savings. Many times, grocery stores will put their most expensive items at eye level. Look on higher or lower

shelves for deeper discounts. ● Reach for the back. Stores will stock their shelves with the oldest items up front. When shopping for perishable items,

grab the ones in the back as they tend to be newer and will last longer. ● Shop the farmers market. Not only are you helping support local producers but many times, prices on seasonal and

organic produce will be lower at your local farmers market than in the grocery store. This is because local growers have lower transportation costs to get their food to consumers compared to those that serve the big-box stores. You can find your nearest market online at https://www.ams.usda.gov/local-food-directories/farmersmarkets . Plate It Up Kentucky Proud has many recipes that will help you get the most use from your in-season produce purchases. Those recipes are available online at https://fcs-hes.ca.uky.edu/content/plate-it-kentucky-proud or on Facebook @plateitupKYproud.

More information on how to stretch your food dollars is available at the Fayette office of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service Sources: Nichole Huff, assistant extension professor and Kelly May, senior extension associate, family finance and resource management

You may have noticed some teal bows at hospitals around

Lexington. They are there to remind you that September is

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

● This year 21,750 women in the United States will be

diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer

● 13,940 women will die from this disease

● Currently there is no early detection test for Ovarian

Cancer

● A Pap test will not detect Ovarian Cancer

● Know the Symptoms:

Bloating

Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly

Pelvic or abdominal pain

Urinary frequency or urgency

If these symptoms occur for more than 2 weeks and

these symptoms are new or unusual for you, see your

gynecologist and ask about ovarian cancer.

The Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association helps to

support the Ovarian Cancer Screening program at the

University of Kentucky, which uses ultrasound screening to

attempt to detect ovarian cancer at an early stage. For more

information see their website at http://ovarianscreening.info

or call 859-323-4687 for an appointment. It is free for

women over age 50 and for women over age 25 who have a

family history of ovarian cancer.

As a three year ovarian cancer survivor, I urge you to be

aware of the symptoms because until there is a definitive test,

awareness is our best tool to detect ovarian cancer early when

it is most treatable. Rose Lewis, Fayette and Scott Co. Homemakers
