SAVING ENERGY WITH KNIGHTS By: Jordan Ross Slide 2 STEPS What UCF has done Energy monitoring Thermostat solutions Incentives Slide 3 WHAT UCF HAS DONE UCF has already made efforts to conserve energy Slide 4 SOME PUBLIC BATHROOMS HAVE SENSORS THAT DETECT WHEN SOMEONE IS IN THE FACILITY Slide 5 THEY HAVE DOOR SENSORS THAT KNOW WHEN THEY ARE OPEN OR CLOSED IN HERCULES AND NIKE Slide 6 THEY HAVE THERMOSTATS THE CHANGE THE TEMPERATURE DEPENDING ON WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE IS IN THE ROOM Slide 7 WHY DO WE NEED TO IMPROVE? We do have systems already a UCF however they do have their shortcomings Many have a very narrow scope of use Others do not works as they were intended to Some are becoming outdated as we speak Slide 8 Many have a very narrow scope of use The light sensors tend to only be affective in public bathrooms and rooms that have people visit occasionally throughout the day Many of UCFs systems are not design for dormitories Slide 9 LIGHT SENSOR Slide 10 Others do not work as they were intended to The thermostats currently used with sensors shut off after 30 minutes of no one walking by it This means that someone always has to be moving This is inefficient at keeping the room at an ideal temperature during times of sleeping and studying This has lead to many of the thermostats being replaced with ones without sensors Slide 11 THERMOSTAT Slide 12 Some are becoming outdated as we speak Many of the door sensors in the Hercules and Nike communities are slowly becoming less relevant The door sensors were design to work with the thermostat to only work when the door is closed However, many thermostats that worked with this system have been replaced The ones with the thermostat discourage socializing with suite mates Slide 13 DOOR SENSOR Slide 14 MONITORING YOUR ENERGY USE How do we know we are wasting energy? How do we monitor when we are using energy? How do we change old habits? Slide 15 How do we know we are wasting energy? It is difficult to know when you are using the most energy during the day There are systems the can do the work for you Slide 16 How do we monitor when we are using energy? In order to effectively cut down on energy use we need to know when we are using it Closing the blinds when you are leave can make all the difference (Woodruff; Chetty) Slide 17 EMON-TX http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/emontx Slide 18 WHAT IS IT? A low power wireless energy monitoring node It monitors up to 3 power inputs Also measure temperature in room throughout the day Gathers energy usage information and organizes it into easy to read graphs Accessible from internet and mobile devices Slide 19 It monitors up to 3 power inputs Slide 20 Gathers energy usage information and organizes it into easy to read graphs Slide 21 Accessible from internet and mobile devices Slide 22 IS EMON-TX THE ANSWER? Not by itself It will monitor outlets and lights We need a smart thermostat Slide 23 THE NEST http://www.nest.com/ Slide 24 SO WHAT? The Nest thermostat would be ideal for UCF Dorm life The lack of complex controls make it easy to understand without any tutorials It learns when your are in and out of the room so you dont have to Slide 25 ALL TOGETHER The usage of emonTx and the Nest as one system will cover most if not all of the energy usage of an individual in a dorm This will set the foundation for any student wanting to save energy Slide 26 WHY WOULD STUDENTS WANT TO SAVE ENERGY? Should students care if they are wasting energy for UCF? They are not paying the electric bill Only the most environment conscious students would even bother trying Slide 27 INCENTIVES UCF does a good job of motivating students to participate in campus events With link loot and other incentives we could help students get feedback for saving energy From simple rewards for hitting energy use benchmarks such as free meals at local restaurants Too a big reward for the student that saves the most energy such as a TV or a scholarship Slide 28 STUDENTS WANT TO SAVE ENERGY We are in a time where saving energy and green design are becoming very popular With one-liners like Global Warming and Carbon Footprint it is hard not to want to save energy You just need to give them a reason and the tools to go out do it Slide 29 UCF IS GREEN UCF has made efforts to save energy With these systems knights can make the difference emonTx Nest And Inentives GO KNIGHTS!
