Dear Hadassah Family,
This is the last time that I will be
addressing you as co-President of North
Pinellas Hadassah, so I would like to give
you some excerpts from the Hadassah 2018
Year in Review, first Humanitarian
Initiatives that we have taken on outside of Israel, which seem to me to
be a way of expressing the value of tikkun olam.
•Medical Mission to, Ethiopia: Eight doctors, two nurses and one
physical therapist from HMO participated in a week-long medical
mission to Ethiopia... The team performed surgeries on youth with life-
threatening spine deformities.
•Good Neighbors Save Syrian Babies: HMO and the Baruch Padeh
Medical Center in Poriya-Tiberias launched a unique collaboration to
help Syrian children with life-threatening heart abnormalities, part of
the Israel Defense Forces' Operation Good Neighbor Program with
support from the Peres enter for Peace. Hadassah pediatric
cardiologist Dr. Julius Golender identified 14 children who could
benefit from heart surgery at HMO. One was a baby born into war-
torn Syria with a hole between his heart chambers. After the surgery at
Hadassah Hospital, tears (of joy) ran down the mother's face when
reunited with her baby in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
•Five Days, 25 Smiles: During a humanitarian mission to Mexico,
Dr. Noah Armon, chief plastic surgeon at Hadassah Hospital and his

team, performed surgeries on 25 girls and boys with cleft lip and palate during a week-long
mission at Hospital General Fresnillo.
•Exporting Expertise to Mexico: HMO health professionals provide specialized training around
the world. Dr. Fortunado Benarroch, Director of the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress at
HMO's Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, traveled to Mexico after the country's
devastating earthquake to train Mexico's top psychologists and psychiatrists in the treatment of
pediatric and adolescent victims of traumatic events.
•Second:Global Collaboration (that) Saves Lives: which showcases our technological outreach.
•Global Data in Real Time: HMO became the first Israeli medical institution to join a global
research network of healthcare organizations and bio-pharmaceutical companies that aims to
increase research efficiency and enable medical discoveries through data sharing.
•Software Without Borders: When it comes to treating patients in the intensive care unit,
predicting hemorrhagic shock can make the difference between life and death. a new soft-ware
does just that, thanks to HMO researchers and partners at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital and
Ben-Gurion University.
•Major Advances in Pediatric Kidney Care: The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation
awarded Hadassah's Pediatric Nephrology Unit a grant to explore ways to manipulate the protein
that controls kidney development and the mechanism causing kidney problems in children born
to malnourished mothers. Dr.Oded Volovelsky, head of the unit ,spent three years as a fellow at
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.; the team's findings were published in the My 2018
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
•Growing New Knee Cartilage: In an Israeli first, Hadassah Hospital surgeons implanted a coral-
based implant, Agili-C, into a woman's knee to regenerate cartilage and bone...The new
procedure, if successful, could bring relief to millions of knee pain sufferers.
This annual report is only sent to Society of Major Donors and above, but I thought our
group would be interested in the information.

Tikkum Olam – The Repair of the World – If you see what needs to be repaired and how to repair
it, then you have found a piece of the world that G-d has left for you to complete. But if you see
what is wrong and what is ugly in the world, then it is you yourself that needs repair.
– Menachem Mendel Schneerson
To be kind is more important than to be right. Many times, what people need is NOT a brilliant
mind that speaks but a SPECIAL HEART THAT LISTENS.
Apologizing does not always mean that you are wrong and the other person is right. It just
means that you value your relationship more than your ego.
– Rabbi Dovid Winiarz z”l
The highest form of wisdom is kindness. – The Talmud
When we treat others kindly, fairly and lovingly, we are truly living Torah.

Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement
This past summer, it’s been particularly disturbing to hear so many people in the United States
talking about the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Let there be no doubt, BDS is an attack on Israel and a call to action for each of us. By
design, it was created to delegitimize Israel, and to create a false equivalency between apartheid
South Africa and the State of Israel, a democracy, which since its Proclamation of Independence on May
14, 1948, pledged to “uphold the full social and political equality of all its citizens.” Since then, starting
with the first election in 1949, Israeli Arabs have sat in the Knesset, now holding 12 out of
120 seats.
Today it’s reassuring to see so many influential voices proudly defending Israel, while
others defy BDS, including Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriquez, former NY Yankee, Lady Gaga,
Sarah Silverman, the Rolling Stones, and so many others.
Our initial impulse may be to lash out at BDS supporters, but civil dialogue is how we
change minds of the heart. Today, I’m asking you to join me in taking a nuanced approach in
these difficult conversations. Hadassah’s How To Talk About Israel resource can help you do
this.
Hadassah has repeatedly and rightfully denounced the global BDS campaign, reaffirming
our long- standing policy against all forms of organized boycotts against the State of Israel.
In July at our 99th National Convention, we adopted a new policy statement on De-Politicizing
Anti-Semitism, stressing that “while democratic principles allow room for individuals to openly
disagree with actions taken by the government, any attempt to delegitimize Israel’s right to
exist must be acknowledged as a form of anti-Semitism.”
Following the House of Representatives having passed a bipartisan resolution making it
clear its opposition to BDS, we continue our advocacy. We must address BDS in our own net-
works – even in our own families and communities. Each of us must be an ambassador against
BDS in our everyday lives. Were BDS to be successful, the economic impact would devastate
not just Jewish Israelis and businesses, but Arab Israelis and businesses - as well as the
Palestinians who come to work in Israel each day. So many people in Israel work every day to
build a peaceful future, to advance social justice, and to help foster a stronger shared society
within Israel. Israel plays a key role in global humanitarian response efforts. And of course,
Hadassah Hospitals treat patients and train medical staff from Gaza and the West Bank.
Hadassah will always be committed to practical Zionism. This means defending
Israel and speaking out against BDS at every opportunity. And it means making changes about
BDS a priority. Each of us has the power to heal our world, to raise our voices, to make an
an impact. This is your call to action!

Janice Caine & Mike Warner
Lylah Pinellas Chapter members warmly welcomed ten of
our North Pinellas Chapter members to their
Annual Membership Brunch on Sunday, September 8 at the
home of Terri Tankel. After an hour or so of “schmoozing”
and admiring the interesting objets d’art spread throughout
the house, a mouth-watering buffet brunch was served.
The group then assembled for the program.
Jody Sherman, president of Lylah Pinellas Chapter,
welcomed everyone. National Board member,
Merna Shapiro’s motivating and informative speech
reviewed all of Hadassah’s projects and activities. Merna
described the focus of each area and provided an update on
the current status of each. She reminded us of what it
means to be a part of Hadassah. Merna also reminded us
that the watchword of Hadassah is
“THE Power of Women Who Do!”
Proceeds from the brunch were donated to
Hadassah’s cancer research.
Thank you Lylah Pinellas for including us.
