3Our Clergy

Seven years ago, when I arrived in Birmingham, you enveloped me and welcomed me as your rabbi. It has been an honor and privilege to walk alongside you on this incredible faith journey. I am the rabbi I am today because of you, my temple family. Because this synagogue trusted and supported me, I have been able to design, build and grow our schools, develop innovative programs, lead worship, teach, and take an active role in our larger community, each of which has impacted and influenced the Temple we are today. I reflect on the time we have shared with love, joy and humility. As your rabbi, I have been with you as you navigated the challenges of life and held your hand offering strength during moments of vulnerability. As your rabbi, I have had the privilege to offer God’s blessing upon you at moments of joy, stood with you under your chuppah, and beamed with pride as our children became Bar and Bat Mitzvah. Each day as I entered our synagogue I felt honored to serve this community with all of my being. The love I have for this congregation is deep and you have enriched my spirit. In Judaism, the number 7 holds special significance representing creation, good fortune, and blessing. According to tradition, a bride circles her groom 7 times before they ascend to the wedding canopy, their chuppah. Each circle represents a day of creation, thus creating a new world together. 7 years ago, I was blessed with the good fortune to join the Temple Emanu-El family. Together, we created a new world—a world enriched by our devotion to one another, enhanced by our passion for Judaism, illuminated by the light of Torah, and sustained by our faith. I have loved being part of our Emanu-El world, and most significantly part of your Jewish journey. As a result, my life has been richly blessed. I am proud of all we have accomplished together. I am humbled by the support, love, and devotion you have shown me. I am in awe of the majesty of this historic synagogue. I am grateful, truly grateful for the trust you placed in me. I will carry my Temple Emanu-El family in my heart, always.

Shalom U’Vracha, Peace and Blessings,Rabbi Laila Haas

Pathways

The mission of Pathways is to end homelessness for women and children through hospitality, housing and hope. They offer a range of transitional and long-term services for homeless women and children. Through its downtown Day Center, the agency provides food, clothing, showers, laundry facilities and case management. Pathways operates a rapid rehousing program for women with children. The agency’s Safe Haven program provides permanent, supportive housing for chronically homeless women with a mental illness. This program is the only one of its kind for women in Alabama.

Over the years, it has become obvious that families need more than shelter to escape homelessness. Pathways also provides a program called Invest in You which merges key elements of the former Employment Readiness and Fiscally Fit programs while meeting the needs of our ever-changing population.

With this continuum of services, Pathways provides housing and supportive services for 1,200-1,500 women and children annually.

Welcome Our Newest Members

We are honored to welcome the following into our

Temple Family:

Terri Aronov

Dear Friends,

Everyone counts. And more…

As I ready to express a farewell to Temple Emanu-El later in June, I am inspired by the words of the Book of Numbers from which we are reading in the Torah, in which a census of the adult, male Israelites is taken – in order to know how many men could be readied to defend the people in the event of war. The number is enumerated following a careful count of heads.

Yet, not all were counted; only males between the ages of 20 and 60 were tallied. Left out were females, the young and the old. That might work in an ancient army, but not in today’s Temple.

Today’s Temple needs the interest, counsel and resources of everyone. All too often in synagogue life, however, there are those who defer to others – to lead, to decide, to support. In my work in Interim Rabbinic life, I have learned that we need to make Temple life more horizontal – more inclusive – more engaging of everyone. The best idea might yet be sitting in the mind of one who has not yet spoken. The next leader may still be sitting in the back row. The novel process may be unconsidered.

As Temple Emanu-El readies itself for its continuing transitional processes, I urge our members and leaders to keep looking around – for one another, for novel ideas, for an embrace of change. Although our Temple has an envious history, its future will not be built on the embrace of yesterday, but on the will to make a tomorrow. And, that requires an openness to everyone and every idea, for in our census of tomorrow’s Temple life, everyone and every thought counts. I hope this is a simple, yet enduring reflection.

On behalf of Susan, we thank the membership and leadership of Temple Emanu-El for the privilege of serving you this year, and we look forward to watching the Temple’s continuing evolution into its many tomorrows.

With Shalom,

Rabbi Douglas Kohn

Monika Flurer Singletary grew up in the small town of Ozark, Alabama. She moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 2006 and began working at the Jewish Community Center shortly after her arrival. During her time in New Orleans, she was a Sisterhood Vice President, choir member, and JNOLA Board Member. Additionally, Monika was accepted to the Jewish Experiential Leadership Institute (JELI) Fellowship of Emerging JCC Leaders in 2013. Through this program, she was immersed in Jewish learning, leadership, and fellowship with nineteen of her JCC peers from around North America.

This program also introduced her to the Birmingham Jewish community, where she eventually accepted a position at the Levite Jewish Community Center as their Director of Membership, Outreach, Retention, and Engagement. In Birmingham, Monika has created multiple partnerships with both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations, sang in the Temple Emanu-El choir, served as cantorial soloist at Temple Emanu-El, served on the Davidson School alumni committee, JELI Southeast committee, and Pancreatic Cancer – Birmingham Chapter committee.

Monika earned her BS in Business Management from Troy University, and is currently pursuing her MA in Jewish Education through The Davidson School at the Jewish Theological Seminary. She most recently was accepted to the first cohort of the Women’s Leadership Birmingham program and the Mystic Krewe of Nyx (based in New Orleans). Monika likes to read, sing, be outside, collaborate, learn, and grow. She loves her awesome husband, Ben, her sweet son, Archer, her two cats, Sababa and Andouille, and her dog, Arabella.

Lynda Gutcheon began the Jewish Education Interim program for The Association of Reform Jewish Educators four years ago. During that time, she has spent the last year at Temple Sinai of Bergen County in Tenafly, New Jersey, and two years at Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard, Illinois. Prior to that she spent the year at Congregation Kol Haverim in Glastonbury, Connecticut, after having served The Temple in Nashville, TN, as their Director of Education for 30 years. She received her education at California State University, USC, The University of Maryland, and The University of Judaism. She began her education journey in special education and became interested in Jewish education through teaching Hebrew to special needs students. Lynda’s strengths are in organizational skills, curriculum development and creating relationships with staff and students. We are excited she is becoming part of our team and look forward to a great year of learning and growing under her direction. Lynda’s husband Bernie is a retired Cantor and they have two daughters and two grandchildren.

DID YOU KNOW?Our Grafman Endowment Fund has a long history of supporting enhancements for our congregation, since its inception in 1979. One of its most significant endeavors was assisting in providing the salary for an Assistant Rabbi / Outreach Director with the hiring of Rabbi Scott Hausman Weiss in 1999. Our Endowment Fund has continued this commitment with providing a

substantial portion of the funding for our now Associate Rabbi Laila Haas, who is leaving us at the end of June. It has also provided important enrichment funding for the youth and education programs which she has lovingly initiated and overseen. Her tenure at Temple

Emanu-El has enriched our congregation in so many ways, and we wish her well on her next endeavor!

With new beginnings ahead, know that our Grafman Endowment Fund continues to be a valuable source of perpetual funding — available to generously support the creativity and new initiatives of our congregation’s spiritual leadership for years to come.

Temple Emanu-El’s Year of Engagement

Volunteer Opportunities

Congregational volunteers will be needed throughout the year to lead services by Cantor Roskin’s side. She will need your help for the entire months of July and August, but from

September through May, we will have a student rabbi twice a month. We look forward to welcoming Student Rabbi Leah Nussbaum in September!

Be on the look out for an email with opportunities to sign up. Our new “Worship Team” (a.k.a, the Ritual Committee),

chaired by Barbara & Jack Aland, has helped break up our needs into small tasks. Please consider helping with at least

one service during the year. The varied opportunities are below:

Service Leader (English only)Hebrew Prayer reader

Person who delivers the Sermon (Friday night) or the D’var Torah (Saturday morning)

Someone to kindle the Sabbath lights (Friday night)Someone to say Kiddush (Friday night)

Lifting the TorahDressing the Torah

Helping with Caring CommitteeHospitality for Student Rabbi Nussbaum

As you can see, there is something for everyone! And, don’t worry about not knowing what to do - training materials will

be developed for each job and Cantor Roskin is happy to meet with anyone during the week to go over their part. We plan to involve our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, and individuals can sign up for one or more things, or a family or group of friends

can sign up together for the entire service. Be creative in thinking about how you wish to take part!
