At last month’s Board Meeting we did some brainstorming and came up with some ideas that we thought would refresh the activities we offer during the year. That brainstorming was the basis of the online survey we sent you all in July. Please, please, please take five minutes and fill out the survey and give us your thoughts and ideas. If you are uncomfortable with surveys give me a call (386-441-8411) or send me an email ([email protected] ). We are truly working everyday to make your Club better and need your input to make that happen. If you noticed a little shift in speaker expertise last month, it’s simply because there is so much going on in the world of fish and environmental management that we felt it necessary to reach out to some of the experts who are working to shape what this whole landscape is going to look like. Beside the menhaden bill our speaker covered there are at least three other key bills up before congress to better manage fish stock and habitat locally, in Mosquito Lagoon and Everglades National Park. Catch rates and seasonality is also on the list. One of the real positives we see is a shift to a better working relationship between NOAA and organizations representing recreational anglers. We are getting regular updates from CCA, The Snook Game Fish Foundation and the FWC on all of these issues. When the time comes we will be asking you to support these bills with letters to your Congressman and Senators. Please don’t forget to enjoy our August events and have fun on the water. Tight Lines! Chuck

My name is Charles Levi Jr AKA “Redfish Chuck”. I started fishing when I wastwo years old in Long Island, NY but I have called the Space Coast of Floridahome for 20+ years and during that time I have fished everything fromfreshwater in small ponds and lakes to large bodies of water like LakeOkeechobee. But I have Saltwater in my blood and my home away fromhome is the Offshore and Inshore waters where I target the many game fishthat the Atlantic Ocean, Indian and Banana Rivers and the Mosquito lagoonhave to offer using light tackle Spin, Fly and Casting gear. My true passion iskayak fishing as I also host a Kayak Fishing Radio Show on Monday nights at8pm where I get to share my passion for fishing with the world. My showhas been going strong for eight years now!

August Fishing ForecastCaptain Jim Britton

saltytalesfishingcharters.comWith the dog days of summer approaching, I recommend anglers do the samething many of us did when we were young, hit the beach! Whether in a boat,on the pier, or from the surf; fishing should be busy. From a boat the targetswill be tarpon, sharks, and large jacks. All of these species can be foundbehind the shrimp boats as they dump their by-catch. When the shrimp boatsare not active just run the beach looking for pogy pods (there will be plenty tochoose from). Once a pod is spotted it will not take long to discover if thereare fish underneath, so slowly approach and have live bait ready or use yourfavorite large artificial bait.

Angler looking to get in on the action from the pier can also get shots at tarponand sharks, in August. Pompano, flounder, bluefish, and drum will be foundaround the pier and from the surf as well.

Offshore anglers will be targeting kingfish by trolling over wrecks and reefs. Ifthe “smokers” are not around, drop an anchor to load up on black sea bass, snapper (so far this has been an excellent summer for mangrove snapper), andgrouper. Further out dolphin and tuna will be found from 135 feet of water outto the ledge.

The inshore bite will remain much the same. Get out early and target redfishalong grass banks at higher tides and along oyster bars or sand bars at thelower tides. Trout can be found along the banks of the IWC and under docks. And don’t forget to target flounder in creek mouths or bends on an outgoingtide. For yet another way to beat the heat – give night fishing a try. Free linea shrimp under dock lights for trout or fish deeper for redfish and flounder.

Sue McCarthy caught thisHugh Red Snapper 18 milesoffshore of Mantanzas Inlet onJuly 9th. Sue was fishing withDerris Leden, Chuck Radloff, and Mike Crotts. Of course, the Snapper was returned to theSea. Congratulations Sue!!!

Wow, almost 9 gallons of ice cream gone in a few hours. We had wonderfultoppings supplied by our members.  Whipping cream, nuts all kinds, differentkinds of syrups, fresh strawberry jam, marshmallow topping and the list goeson and on. The truth is everyone enjoyed themselves. Great evening and wethank all who participated in the social. That is what the club is about fishing, eating and getting to know one another. Thanks Diana MacDonald and RoyLawson (new members of the Club’s Board of Directors) for getting all that icecream.By Pat Gleichmann
