Savannah Oaks Driving Net - Candlewick Lake,...

Vol. 33, No. 9 September 2017 Savannah Oaks Driving Net by Dale Miedema There are always guys around here that want to im- prove things, and the members of our Golf Commission have quite a few on their team. Most all the guys thought that a driving net would be a great idea. Some of the guys considered themselves pretty good on the putting green, but knew perhaps they needed a little work on their “long” ball. So here’s where the story starts. As with most new ideas, the plan had to be presented to the BOD, and they decide if this is a worthwhile thing: Is it good for the community? How much does it cost? and so on. The whole process for this project actually started last year with the BOD awarding a budget to the Golf Commission for getting this done. Don Tripicchio took the bull by the horns and began asking and recruit- ing volunteers for the building of the net, and by the time it was done, there were over a dozen people that have some sweat equity in the project! Brad Betke handled the pouring and completion of the concrete work which was a major factor in bringing the project in well under budget. I spoke with Don about the project, and he said the key to the whole thing was community involvement - he said our maintenance guys helped out in any way they could, and even the staff for the golf course was involved in helping out too. The net kit was purchased through Amazon, and designed by DW Quality Golf. The kit included a nice artificial turf mat that allows the golfer his choice of tee to use, unlike that little rubber thimble you’ll find at most driving ranges. An improvement to the kit by our guys included wrapping the steel pipes in insulation to prevent a badly shanked ball from bounc- ing back and hurting someone, and it looks pretty nice too. And the best part is it’s free to use, so after using the putting green, you can take out your frustrations at the The newest addition to Savannah Oaks. The hard working construction crew. driving net, confirming your suspicions that your drive is worse than your putt. I was at the golf course when the Youth League was meeting, and while the instructors were teaching the kids some putting skills,Willa Moen, Tom Pinkowski and Chris Murphy were not only passing on some secrets to the next generation, but they all agreed that the net saves time, time that can be better utilized working on the students technique and form. The kids enjoy the new driving net to no end - not only does it eliminate the need to chase down balls, but the middle, or the target of the net makes a sweet sound when a well driven ball finds its mark. Darn, I wish I could do that. Special thanks to those that helped out: Charlie & Jim Andres, Tom Pinkowski, Steve Johnson, Don Tripicchio, Jeff Heinrich, Jim Brefeld, Bob McHoes, Brad Betke, and Jerome O’Carrol. The Youth Golf League has come to an end for the season. The tournament on August 5 was a lot of fun. We had two groups that participated. Our winners are as fol- lows: 8-10 year olds 1 st Nathan Binkley 2 nd CJ Murphy 3 rd Brianna Murphy 11-15 year olds 1 st Meghan Tryon 2 nd Charlie Andres 3 rd Megan Fonseca A HUGE THANK YOU to our wonderful coaches who volunteered their time to these activities: Tom Pinkowski, Chris Murphy and Willa Moen.
