PRESIDENTS REPORT

Welcome back from Tasmania all who attended this years very successful National Convention . Even though the weather was slight!y chilly the best thing to come out of it all was that there was no rain!

For the dancers who plan well head , next years National is in Newcastle over Easter. 1998 is in Adelaide and 1999 in Brisbane , both over the Queens Birthday weekend . Both Western Australia and Victoria have placed intentions to bid for the 2000 Convention.

The State Convention Sub-Committee had their first meeting recently and by all reports things are right on track for a weekend of Fun and Friendship. As this is a highlight of the Square Dancing year I know that many dancers will be pleased by that news!

~ The AGM and Dinner Dance Sub-Committees have also informed me that things are underway for those functions to be very enjoyable and entertaining for all who attended .

Unfortunately not much time was had by delegates who attended meetings in Launceston to draw up reports as of yet so you will have to wait until next month to hear what is happening on the national scene.

From The Editor With the National convention over and now well behind us we have returned to the mainland tired but very pleased with the whole event. If I never see another hill or set of steps again it will be too soon . I thought all that walking up and down would have helped one loose few of those excess kilos (and boy do I have plenty of those) but the good living, food and of course the visit to the chocolate factory put paid to that Idea, instead one now has to invest in the next size in clothing. Thank all those who responded to my request for feed back on the changes to the diary that we made in the last issue and by al l accounts was very well received. However the request for feed back has hilighted another area wh ere we have some problems. This is the accuracy of some of the info rmation conta ined in the Dates to Remember section. The duplication of events with different dates comes about for many reasons including typographical on my part, but in the main they are caused by dates being changed after we have first entered a event or function . To overcome this we are investigating measures that will overcome this and could include not carrying forward entries for Dates to Remember but instead list on ly those provided on the monthly report sheet. This will help overcome a major portion of these mistakes, once again your comments please. However we have always indicated that it pays to confirm an event with a club before committing yourself to travel to it. Once again, Thanks for your input. My time as editor is almost over and although at times I have wished I didn't agree to accept this position, I have really enjoyed it, met and corresponded with many dancers that I would not have, even some of those heated moments when some report or advert was wrong or missed have a funny side now. A commercial decision will be made soon as to my availability of standing for re election to this or for that matter any position with the VSDA.

During the National Convention in Tasmania , it was pleasing to see al l the Victorian Callers, in particular, the ones who Cal led for the first time at a National, do such a good job. It showed that Victoria has a good future with our experienced and newer Callers representing the State so well. The VCA Skills & Development Committee are comm itted to providing a wide range of sessions to ass ist all Callers in developing their knowledge and skill s. VCA Skills & Development Committee. David Brown, Howard Cockburn , Mike Davey.

As a learner, I found the Friendship Dance at the Mechanics Institute Hall at Oakleigh on June 2nd , a great way to gain experience. To dance the basic steps with people from other clu bs not only bu il ds your confidence but its also a lot of fun . The atmosphere was great and thanks to those concerned for the soup and sausage sizzle afterwards . ... .. Can We Do It Aga in? Glenice Eilers.

Registration Secretary - Adrian S. Brown (03) 9801 366 1

Hello again and I hope you al l enj oyed a relaxing and pleasurable National Convention in Launceston last month ! Recent ly the comm ittee for the State convention had its first meeting and a lot of positive ideas were thrown around with regards to after parties, themes and logos, not to mention how th e 28th is going to be a convention of Fun and Friendship with all who attend being guaranteed, if

oth ing else, a happy weekend. ror those of you who aren't aware, Wodonga was first used as a State Convention site back in 1990 when the VSDA held its "Coming of Age" 21st VSDA State Convention which attracted around 600 dancers. It has only been used as a venue for a state convention that one and on ly t ime up until now. And with this convention looking to be as friendly as the one in 1990 who knows how many more times it will be used! Just finally, please don't hesitate to contact any of the convention committee if you have an inquiry in regards to th e convention and please direct all written correspondence to the Registrations Secretary, PO Box 38, BRIAR HILL VIC 3088 Unti l next month - Happy Dancing ! It was sign ificant to note that the majority of attendee's were not present at the previous event of this kind held at Morwell in June, 93. Does any of the above mean anything to you? If so we want to talk to you

It is almost 2 years since the SA V has been brought to you in this fonnat and we have strived to continually make improvements along the way as and when the need has arisen, Most of the changes or the ideas for them have come from you the members, I am only the one who puts the infonnation together. Behind the scenes also is a small but productive group of helpers who do the running around delivering the original copy to the Printer and collecting it (a round trip of some 45 kIn) giving up another of those oh so rare nights at home in the warm to pack, label and sort each issue. To those people we are very grateful for without them you would not get your SA V in the first week of the month. It is my belief that we should now be considering the future of the SA V . Shock and horror, the future! Yes I believe that the SA V has grown to be a reasonable sort of publication and it obviously fulfils a need but as I have indicated above, it is a big job to bring each issue out on time. I am not afraid to put my hand up when I believe help is needed so once again I am raising my hand to attract the attention of those members who may be able to assist is some way. If enough interest is created we shall have a meeting to discuss it fonnally. You will not be pressed into doing anything you do not wish, just your little bit of guidance or input may be just what we need to keep up the improvements. Please give it some thought. Please think about how you can help with the SA V. For what would square dancing in Victoria be like without the SA V.?

PUBLICITY JOINT PUBLICITY REPORT. From Charlie Fry & Lorraine Ritchie

On June 2nd, what started out as a discussion with a dancer turned into the first (( Friendship Dance", named because it was designed to sholl' new dancers what square dancing is a/l about.

3 0 'clock arrived and the first bracket saw about eight sets on the floor dancing and enjoying themselves. By the time the second bracket started, there were fifteen sets of happy smiling dancers. It was great to see the dancers introducing themselves to those people in the set not familiar to them throughout the afternoon.

The dance level was large~v limited to the fi rst thirty callerlab movements, which set a challenge to the Callers involved. Our thanks go to Janet, Bany, Peter, George, Ken , David, Jamce, Lee Mack(v, Clem, Lorraine and Lee ,\JacFadyean. Janet introduced Round Dancing to everyone and Peter had a lot of f un with Grand Square.

We did not expect the dancers to dance as continuously as they did, so it was really no surprise to have them asking "When is tea to be served? " Our thanks go the dance committee members Barbara, Kevin, Bev and Ian and to Ria and Jenny for their tireless work behind the scenes to ensure that everything ran smoothly. A special thank you goes to Peter Humphries, without whose expertise we might not have had such a varied and interesting programme.

Happy DanCing Lorraine and Charlie

With the Annual Generallv!eetingjust around the corner, I would like to take this opportunity to ask you all to think about the direction you would like to see Square DanCing take. Nominate a person you think would make a positive contribution to the Association or be nominated yourself Every member of the

r-- Association has the right to a voice in how the association should be run.

With many of the existing office bearers either standing down from their present pOSition or not standing for re -election, it appears as though we will see an almost total nell" committee fo r /996-97. Remember that the Association works for Four benefit as well as the benefit of danCing in general. While I knOll" we have made mistakes in the past, it is important that vou, the dancer, help us Il"ith .I ·our input to make square danCing bigger and beller than it is today.

Just fl ew back from Launceston. A beautiful City & State, a great, warm and fri endly co nvention but th ose co ld mornings and evenings ! A vi siting Caller commented that if you wanted to get warm as all you had to do was go back into the motel and open the fridge door. At least the sunny days made Tasmania an attractive tourist and dancing destination, even in winter. Sti ll on weather, Bi ll has winter problems in travelling all the way down from Bullarto (near Daylesford ) each Monday night. One night last month he didn't make it. The fog was so thick he could hardly see down his drive way. One a brighter note, Merle has started dancing a few dances each night. Don't forget to come to our 19th Birthday. No Theme. Just lots of good Calling, Dancing and Fellowship. Hopping to keep warm HOPPALONG

The people of Tasmania made us feel very welcome and put on what I would consider one of the best National Conventions I have attended. Congratulat ions to the organ ising committee of the 37th National, well done Tasmania. Round Dances added to the Convention list are as difficult as those of the previous two years, but no less enjoyable. They include - Waltz, Quickstep, Cha, Foxtrot and Tango rhythms.
