About Saul Bass

Some people believe that Saul Bass is the ‘master’ of title sequences. This is because his designs are very simple yet interesting. Bass’s title sequences are very abstract and different to other title sequence. Also his films were made around the 1960s this shows that without the technology we have today he put together very stylish and interesting title sequences.

Oceans ElevenStyle

Saul bass’s style in making title sequences is very simple. For example in this pictures above it is just lights. However, these lights can represent things such as casino’s pop to mind when I look at them. Also Saul Bass is known for his simple yet abstract designs and in this sequence we see this. For example, in this image. The images start off as just lines but soon evolve into images that signify something.

• The title sequence was designed to give us an impression on the

movie before we actually see it. Therefore from this title sequence

we can predict that it is going to be about casinos, gambling and

money. From the title sequence we can see what kind of themes

will appear in the film. Themes such as disobeying the law to get

rich, or gambling to get rich. There fore the general theme we get

from the title sequence is gambling and the need to be rich.

Sound

• The music in the title sequence is upbeat and I think it goes well with the

genre of the film because it is set in the 1960s. The instruments used in

the song gives us the impression it is upper class as it is the stereotypical

music they would listen to. Also from the music we know that the film is

set in America as it is the traditional music of a brass band. Also we can

hear a person say ‘Beverly hills’ which indicates it is in America.
