This summer catalog offers classes and activities for everyone! You’ll find new gardening and fitness classes for adults, and for kids, new exciting classes ranging from Cribbage and Chess, to Spanish, Zumba, Myth Busting, and lots of Legos! To challenge kids and preclude that “summer slip,” check out Rockstar Readers, Math Magicians, Engineering and Minecrafting in virtual 3D.

Chalk the Walk! Family EventGrab your sidewalk chalk and let your imagination soar. Kick-off summer in style and draw, color and create with chalk on the sidewalks and parking lot at Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School. Bring the whole family for this fun, creative event. We’ll provide the lemonade! Please bring your own sidewalk chalk.

No registration necessary. Come anytime between 10am and 1pm. Space is on a first come, first served basis.

Parent Connections : Preventing Power StrugglesCasi Olson, Clinical Psychologist

We’ll provide the pizza and childcare so YOU can connect with other parents about the joys and challenges of parenting that we all experience. Casi Olson will guide discussion as you learn from her and other parents about preventing power struggles. Get tips and explore ways families can spend quality time together. Casi has shared her expertise with many parents. Grandparents and professionals are also welcome.Pizza will be served from 6:00-6:30pm and childcare is available for ages 3-12 during the parenting presentation from 6:30-7:45pm.COST: $5 per family, per date. (Scholarships available). Register in advance for childcare and to ensure we have pizza for your family.

Have you ever wanted to record your childhood memories to pass on to your children and grandchildren? Come join our delightful writing workshop and experience a visit back to your childhood. You will be guided in creating your own collection of stories that will be treasured and loved by your family forever.

Through a series of questions, you will write 15 to 20 stories that will capture your childhood memories perfectly. Spend the day with us exploring and revisiting your childhood! No writing experience is necessary.

Please bring a bagged lunch; paper and pens will be supplied. Coffee, tea, and muffins will be available in the morning.

Mary Jo is a an author and biographer from Pequot Lakes. She has been presenting these writing workshops all over Northern Minnesota and every participant never wants the workshop to end!

Exploring Poetry WritingDennis Herschbach

Local author and award-winning poet, Dennis Herschbach, will share some contemporary poetry styles and give ideas and instruction on how to put your personal memories into poetry. Dennis, the Vice President of the League of MN Poets has published several books, including a collection of poems, South First and Lake Front.

The first session will be the introduction to poetry writing and the second session will further develop participants’ work from session one.

PADI Discover Scuba Diving Experience

Todd Matthies, MN School of Diving

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? Now’s your chance! Offered by the experienced staff at the MN School of Diving Inc., this class is a great way to find out what scuba diving is really like before you take a full scuba certification course.

You will spend about a half hour pool-side learning about the basic principles of scuba diving and an overview of your scuba gear. Once you feel comfortable, you will spend 30 to 45 minutes in pool experiencing what it’s like breathing underwater, while you receive guidance in a few basic scuba skills.

With the exception of a swimsuit and towel, all snorkeling/scuba equipment will be supplied.

Water aerobics is a great way to optimize cardiovascular conditioning while enhancing muscular strength, endurance and flexibility! Exercise at your own level of intensity, however, expect an intermediate to moderate level of exertion.

Class is primarily in the deep end of the pool. Swimming ability is not necessary, but you should be comfortable in the water. Floatation belts provided.

Fencing Classes with Minnesota Sword Play

Whether you are fencing for a good work out, or gaining points for the Olympics, fencing is fun for the whole family. Fencing is a vigorous sport that requires and develops stamina, quick reactions, speed, accuracy of movement and excellent coordination. It utilizes natural body movement to create simple and effective self-protection techniques with the sword. Attacking, defense, timing and intense tactics are all integrated into this beginning class.

Scholarships & DiscountsScholarships will be granted for District 47 residents in need of assistance to participate. Some exceptions apply; call 258-1577 for details. All inquiries are confidential. No forms required.

Senior AdultsSeniors, age 62 and over, who are residents of District 47, may register for most courses* at 25% off the regular price, less any materials.

Those who cancel with less than two working days prior to class are subject to a $6 service fee minus any direct costs associated with the class (i.e. supplies, food, etc.).

T-Ball, Ages 3-4*In this fun version of baseball, all children will bat and play the field. Players must be able to swing a metal bat and hit a ball off a tee. Swimming Lesson Evaluations

Swim lessons are taught according to standards of performance. Student skills will be evaluated at the first class for proper placement. To advance to the next level, students must have a completion certificate from the previous level or demonstrate the completion skills requirement.

Level 1: Basic Water SkillsHelps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely. Students learn elementary aquatic skills and start to develop good attitudes and safe practices around the water.

Level 2: Basic Swim SkillsGives students success with fundamental skills. Students learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. Students explore simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back to build the foundation for future strokes. Level 2 adds to the self-help and basic rescue skills begun in Level 1.

Level 3: Stroke ImprovementBuilding on the skills from Level 2 by providing more guided practice. Students learn to coordinate the front and back crawl and are introduced to the butterfly and treading water.

Students learn the rules for headfirst entries and begin to enter the water headfirst from the side of the pool.

Level 4: Stroke ProgressionDevelops confidence in previously learned strokes and improvement of other aquatic skills.

Students increase their endurance by swimming familiar strokes for greater distances. Students continue to build on the butterfly and introduce the elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and elements of the side stroke. Basics of turning at a wall introduced.

Levels 1-6Enroll your child for summer swim lessons. Learn to Swim Lessons Levels 1 through 4 will be offered at the Sauk Rapids-Rice High School. Levels 5 and 6 will be offered as needed, by request from parents. See level information on page 26.

The pool capacity limits the number of swimmers per class/per hour. Parents can register for more than one summer swim session per child. Registrations are on a first come, first served basis. Please see the chart at right for session dates and lesson times.

Summer Ball Information June 9 - July 24, 2014, NOT 7/3A detailed schedule for the summer will be handed out by the end of the first week. Teams and game times will be included. Some Fridays may be used for make-up games.

Program participation is determined by age as of June 1, 2014.

Ball pictures will be taken June 16-19. Uniform shirts are provided for all ball programs and shirt size requested by parent(s) cannot be changed or exchanged after May 16th.

Bam Bam Ball 3 & 4 yrs oldBam Bam Ball provides children an opportunity to play a fun version of baseball that teaches the initial skills of the game. All children will play in the field and bat each inning. A fat plastic bat and incrediball will be used.

Soft Toss Ball 5 & 6 yrs oldBuild skills playing a version of baseball that is fun yet teaches skills. All children will get a chance to bat and play in the field. To be eligible for Soft-Toss a player should be able to swing a metal bat and hit a ball pitched to them. Game shirt provided for each player. Thursdays may be used as make-up days.

Rookie Ball 7 & 8 yrs oldA player in Rookie Ball should be able to catch a ball thrown from 40 feet and hit a ball pitched from 30 feet. Skills will be taught to challenge each player. Game shirt provided for each player.

Little League Baseball 11, 12 & 13 yrs oldGames and practices will be on the Little League Baseball field in the Sauk Rapids athletic complex. Game shirt provided for each player.

Girls Fast Pitch Softball, 7-18 yrs oldRegistration is now closed for Fast Pitch Softball. Teams were developed and registered in leagues in the St. Cloud area by April 1st.

All teams from 12U to 18U will be playing in the St. Cloud JO Softball League. That league plays 2 games, each Tuesday night, during the months of June and July. The 10U teams will be playing in the Waite Park League on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Practice times for all teams will be scheduled by coaches at each level. Most teams will practice on Monday and Wednesday evenings. All practices and games will be held at Mayhew Creek Park, located near Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.

The Parent Information meeting will be held on Sunday, April 27th, at 6:00pm at the Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School. Please call the Recreation Department at 253-6631 with questions regarding the softball programs.

Registration PoliciesPre-registration is required for all activities. All activities are processed through our online registration system. Mail-in or in-person registrations are processed the date they’re received, if space is available. If payment isn’t included, you’ll forfeit your place.

When Can I Register?Summer Swimming Lessons and Sports Camps Begins Monday, April 14, 10am.

Swim Lesson Registrations will not be accepted prior to April 14th. All openings will be online on Monday, April 14th at 10:00am.

Summer Ball Programs Registration is now available.

RefundsRefunds may be requested up to seven days prior to the first class date and are subject to a $5 service charge per person, per program.

No refunds will be made after the first class date.

Sauk Rapids Recreation reserves the right to cancel any program due to low enrollment. Fees will be refunded in full. Swim classes require a minimum of three enrolled or they will be canceled.

Inclement Weather If activities are canceled due to weather, it will be announced on the radio and online:

If a storm or tornado warning occurs, participants will be notified and moved to a safe place and held until an all clear has been given.
