Registered Nurses, Physicians, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Case Managers, Respiratory Therapists, and Speech-‐Language Pathologists
Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to provide comprehensive instruction on optimum multidisciplinary care for the challenging clinical population of the total laryngectomy patient pre-‐ and postoperatively through didactic and interactive teaching methods.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
1.) Describe basic anatomy and physiology of the neck pre-‐ and postoperatively.
2.) List 3 differences between a tracheostomy and laryngectomy.
3.) Describe the impact of a laryngectomy on the pulmonary system.
4.) Identify supplies needed for postoperative pulmonary care of the laryngectomy patient.
5.) Demonstrate basic knowledge of the steps associated with CPR for the total neck breather.
6.) Identify the 3 major communication modalities post laryngectomy.
7.) Create a home management plan for the total laryngectomy patient after discharge.
8.) Troubleshoot financial and social obstacles often associated with this patient population.
9.) Describe the benefits of lymphedema treatment and identify appropriate patients for this modality.

Continuing Education Credit: Licensed Nurses: Upstate AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by The South Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Upon successful completion of this program, attendees will receive 7 contact hours. Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants: This course has been submitted to the South Carolina Chapter of the APTA for contact hours. Occupational Therapists, certified Occupational Therapists Assistants: This course has been submitted to the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association (SCOTA) for contact hours. Respiratory Therapists: 7 clock hours will be awarded by Upstate AHEC, an approved provider of continuing education for respiratory care practitioners by the SC Board of Medical Examiners. Social Workers: This program has been approved for 7 clock hours of non-‐social work continuing education by Upstate AHEC, as part of the SC AHEC system, under its accreditation by the SC Board of Social Work Examiners. Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologist: This course is offered for .7 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area).
