Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Our parish family celebrates this weekend Sister Clementina’s 75th year anniversary of religious life. It is provi-dential that we mark this occasion on the year of consecrated life proclaimed by Pope Francis. As a tribute to the work of sister Clementina, I share with you fragments of the Pope’s letter to religious on this year of consecrated life applicable to all Christians.“Look to the past with gratitude…Recounting our history is essential for preserving our identity, for strengthening our unity as a family and our com-mon sense of belonging. More than an exercise in archaeology or the cultivation of mere nostalgia, it calls for follow-ing in the footsteps of past generations in order to grasp the high ideals, and the vision and values which inspired them, beginning with the founders and foundresses and the first communities. In this way we come to see how the charism has been lived over the years, the creativity it has sparked, the difficulties it encountered and the concrete ways those difficulties were surmounted…Live the present with passion…

Living the present with passion means becoming “experts in communion”, “witnesses and architects of the ‘plan for unity’ which is the crowning point of human history in God’s design”. In a polarized society, where different cultures experience difficulty in living alongside one another, where the powerless encounter oppression, where inequality abounds, we are called to offer a concrete model of community which, by acknowledging the dignity of each person and sharing our respective gifts, makes it possible to live as brothers and sisters.Embrace the future with hope…So do not yield to the temptation to see things in terms of numbers and efficiency, and even less to trust in your own strength. In scanning the horizons of your lives and the present moment, be watchful and alert. Together with Benedict XVI, I urge you not to “join the ranks of the prophets of doom who proclaim the end or meaninglessness of the consecrated life in the Church in our day; rather, clothe yourselves in Jesus Christ and put on the armour of light – as Saint Paul urged – keeping awake and watchful”. Let us constantly set out anew, with trust in the Lord.That the old saying will always be true: “Where there are religious, there is joy”. We are called to know and show that God is able to fill our hearts to the brim with happiness; that we need not seek our happiness elsewhere; that the authentic fraternity found in our communities increases our joy; and that our total self-giving in service to the Church, to families and young people, to the elderly and the poor, brings us life-long personal fulfillment.None of us should be dour, discontented and dissatisfied, for “a gloomy disciple is a disciple of gloom”. Like every-one else, we have our troubles, our dark nights of the soul, our disappointments and infirmities, our experience of slowing down as we grow older. But in all these things we should be able to discover “perfect joy”. For it is here that we learn to recognize the face of Christ, who became like us in all things, and to rejoice in the knowledge that we are being conformed to him who, out of love of us, did not refuse the sufferings of the cross.In a society which exalts the cult of efficiency, fitness and success, one which ignores the poor and dismisses “los-ers”, we can witness by our lives to the truth of the words of Scripture: “When I am weak, then I am strong”.“Fundamentally, the strength of the Church is living by the Gospel and bearing witness to our faith. The Church is the salt of the earth; she is the light of the world. She is called to make present in society the leaven of the Kingdom of God and she does this primarily by her witness, her witness of brotherly love, of solidarity and of sharing with others”…

I am counting on you “to wake up the world”, since the distinctive sign of consecrated life is prophecy. As I told the Superiors General: “Radical evangelical living is not only for religious: it is demanded of everyone. But religious fol-low the Lord in a special way, in a prophetic way.” This is the priority that is needed right now: “to be prophets who witness to how Jesus lived on this earth… a religious must never abandon prophecy”.Prophets receive from God the ability to scrutinize the times in which they live and to interpret events: they are like sentinels who keep watch in the night and sense the coming of the dawn. Prophets know God and they know the men and women who are their brothers and sisters. They are able to discern and denounce the evil of sin and injustice. Because they are free, they are beholden to no one but God, and they have no interest other than God. Prophets tend to be on the side of the poor and the powerless, for they know that God himself is on their side…At times, like Elijah and Jonah, you may feel the temptation to flee, to abandon the task of being a prophet because it is too demanding, wearisome or apparently fruitless. But prophets know that they are never alone. As he did with Jeremiah, so God encourages us: “Be not afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you.””We give thanks to God for the 75 years past, as we live intensely the present and wish you fecund future to sister Clementina and the Oblates! Happy anniversary sister!

Queridos hermanos en Cristo:

Este fin de semana, celebramos en nuestra parroquia los 75 años de vida religiosa de la Hermana Clementina, nues-tra directora de educación religiosa. Es providencial que sea en este año de la vida consagrada convocado por el Papa Francisco.Como homenaje a la labor de la Hermana Clementina, comparto con Uds. fragmentos de la carta del Papa a los reli-giosos que se aplican a todos los cristianos.“Mirar al pasado con gratitud…Poner atención en la propia historia es indispensable para mantener viva la identidad y fortalecer la unidad de la familia y el sentido de pertenencia de sus miembros. No se trata de hacer arqueología o cultivar inútiles nostalgias, sino de recorrer el camino de las generaciones pasadas para redescubrir en él la chispa inspiradora, los ideales, los proyectos, los valores que las han impulsado, partiendo de los fundadores y fundadoras y de las primeras comu-nidades. También es una manera de tomar conciencia de cómo se ha vivido el carisma a través de los tiempos, la creatividad que ha desplegado, las dificultades que ha debido afrontar y cómo fueron superadas…Vivir el presente con pasión…Vivir el presente con pasión es hacerse «expertos en comunión», «testigos y artífices de aquel “proyecto de comunión” que constituye la cima de la historia del hombre según Dios». En una sociedad del enfrentamiento, de difícil con-vivencia entre las diferentes culturas, de la prepotencia con los más débiles, de las desigualdades, estamos llamados a ofrecer un modelo concreto de comunidad que, a través del reconocimiento de la dignidad de cada persona y del compartir el don que cada uno lleva consigo, permite vivir en relaciones fraternas…Abrazar el futuro con esperanza…No hay que ceder a la tentación de los números y de la eficiencia, y menos aún a la de confiar en las propias fuerzas. Examinad los horizontes de la vida y el momento presente en vigilante vela. Con Benedicto XVI, repito: «No os unáis a los profetas de desventuras que proclaman el final o el sinsentido de la vida consagrada en la Iglesia de nuestros días; más bien revestíos de Jesucristo y portad las armas de la luz – como exhorta san Pablo –, permaneciendo despiertos y vigilantes». Continuemos y reemprendamos siempre nuestro camino con confianza en el Señor.Que sea siempre verdad lo que dije una vez: «Donde hay religiosos hay alegría». Estamos llamados a experimentar y demostrar que Dios es capaz de colmar nuestros corazones y hacernos felices, sin necesidad de buscar nuestra felici-dad en otro lado; que la auténtica fraternidad vivida en nuestras comunidades alimenta nuestra alegría; que nuestra entrega total al servicio de la Iglesia, las familias, los jóvenes, los ancianos, los pobres, nos realiza como personas y da plenitud a nuestra vida…Que entre nosotros no se vean caras tristes, personas descontentas e insatisfechas, porque «un seguimiento triste es un triste seguimiento». También nosotros, al igual que todos los otros hombres y mujeres, sentimos las dificultades, las noches del espíritu, la decepción, la enfermedad, la pérdida de fuerzas debido a la vejez. Precisamente en esto deberíamos encontrar la «perfecta alegría», aprender a reconocer el rostro de Cristo, que se hizo en todo semejante a nosotros, y sentir por tanto la alegría de sabernos semejantes a él, que no ha rehusado someterse a la cruz por amor nuestro.En una sociedad que ostenta el culto a la eficiencia, al estado pletórico de salud, al éxito, y que margina a los pobres y excluye a los «perdedores», podemos testimoniar mediante nuestras vidas la verdad de las palabras de la Escritura: «Cuando soy débil, entonces soy fuerte»…«El valor de la Iglesia, fundamentalmente, es vivir el Evangelio y dar testimonio de nuestra fe. La Iglesia es la sal de la tierra, es luz del mundo, está llamada a hacer presente en la sociedad la levadura del Reino de Dios y lo hace ante todo con su testimonio, el testimonio del amor fraterno, de la solidaridad, del compartir».Espero que «despertéis al mundo», porque la nota que caracteriza la vida consagrada es la profecía. Como dije a los Superiores Generales, «la radicalidad evangélica no es sólo de los religiosos: se exige a todos. Pero los religiosos siguen al Señor de manera especial, de modo profético». Esta es la prioridad que ahora se nos pide: «Ser profetas como Jesús ha vivido en esta tierra... Un religioso nunca debe renunciar a la profecía».El profeta recibe de Dios la capacidad de observar la historia en la que vive y de interpretar los acontecimientos: es como un centinela que vigila por la noche y sabe cuándo llega el alba. Conoce a Dios y conoce a los hombres y mu-jeres, sus hermanos y hermanas. Es capaz de discernir, y también de denunciar el mal del pecado y las injusticias, porque es libre, no debe rendir cuentas a más amos que a Dios, no tiene otros intereses sino los de Dios. El profeta está generalmente de parte de los pobres y los indefensos, porque sabe que Dios mismo está de su parte…A veces, como sucedió a Elías y Jonás, se puede tener la tentación de huir, de evitar el cometido del profeta, porque es demasiado exigente, porque se está cansado, decepcionado de los resultados. Pero el profeta sabe que nunca está solo. También a nosotros, como a Jeremías, Dios nos asegura: «No tengas miedo, que yo estoy contigo para librarte»¡Damos gracias a Dios por estos 75 años pasados, mientras vivimos intensamente el presente y le deseamos un fu-turo fecundo a la Hermana Clementina y las Oblatas! ¡Feliz aniversario!
