Inclusion and Celebration

Busy times here at the Banke! Though it never slows down here at Puddle

Dock, it does seem that summer vacation season brings a particular intensity — and lets Strawbery Banke shine.

It all starts when the big tent goes up for Taste of the Nation (which Strawbery Banke helps sponsor for Share Our Strength) and stays on through An

American Celebration and the festivities of Independence Day.

Like the historic build-ings here, if the walls of this big tent could speak, they’d have wonderful stories to tell: revelers raising money to end

childhood hunger, Seacoast PRIDE pa-rading in rainbow hues, and a new group of American citizens welcomed into this “neighborhood of newcomers” like their predecessors for the past 300 years.

Surrounding this symbol of inclusion and celebration, Strawbery Banke leads young campers on exciting journeys through “once upon a time” — and invites adults to investigate the themes of “change over time” that continue to grow from the Long Range Interpretive Plan that the team has crafted over the past two years.

Soon it will be September and time for Vintage & Vine, then PASSPORT, then the Portsmouth Fairy House Tours, all fine ways to hold onto summer, a showcase season for the campus, especially the gar-dens. I hope to see you before September to enjoy the best Strawbery Banke has to offer; and thank you for the support that makes it all possible.

Lawrence J. Yerdon President & CEO

Strawbery Banke collaborated with Sherm Pridham and other Puddle Dock neighbor-hood alumni from the Haven School to revive the celebration of Flag Day on June

14th. Gathering at Portsmouth’s Liberty Pole, the oldest in the nation (raised January 9, 1766) nearly 100 participants, including the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Color Guard and Mayor Jack Blalock, saluted the day.

In the 1959 photo on the left, the flag bearer is Vinny Marconi, to his right is John Connors, to Vinny’s left is Wayne Semprini, and in the rear is Tim Francois. In the 2018 photo are Vinny Marconi, John Connors, Wayne Semprini, and Tim Francois.

Charles Librizzi publishes Thomas Bailey Aldrich book

Strawbery Banke hosted a book launch party

for historical interpreter Charles Librizzi, author of the new book Victorian Wit: Thomas Bailey Aldrich: His Life and Times and Contemporaries (Piscataqua Press; avail-able in the museum’s Visitors Center for $12). Joining the celebration were Nancy and Jonathan Aldrich, great-grandson of Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Charles Librizzi joined

the museum staff in 1996 and has spent a good portion of his time interpreting the Thomas Bailey Aldrich House to visitors and researching the author, poet and Atlantic Monthly editor. Aldrich was perhaps best known as the author of The Story of a Bad Boy (1869), the first American boy’s story (predating and possibly inspiring Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn), the semi-autobiographic account of Aldrich’s early years in Portsmouth living with his grandfather Bailey from 1849 to 1852 in the “Aldrich House” on Court Street.

Right to left, Larry Yerdon, Charles Librizzi, Jonathan Aldrich, Nancy Aldrich.

Many thanks to Bangor Savings Bank, a new sponsor of Vintage & Vine and PASSPORT. With two full-service branches in Portsmouth, one on Lafayette Road and the second opening this fall on Bow Street, Bangor Savings shared their plans for Portsmouth with free admission to “surprise and delight” skaters at Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond last January. Welcome!

In addition to books, crafts handmade on site and Strawbery Banke-logoed items, Trustee Anne Weidman and National

Council member Laura Brown have added new merchandise to the gift shop shelves.

New notecards, magnets, totes, journals, puzzles and small art prints feature the images of museum houses painted by Emily Kalina, resident of Portsmouth. She has adapted her distinc-tive style into best-selling scarves and other items for Nine West Dress, Michael Kors, Barney’s New York, Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Target and TJX. She now lives in the West End and says of Strawbery Banke, “I am no stranger to excellent museums in all parts of the world, and find Strawbery Banke to be one of the most unique and special ones I’ve come across. I am thrilled to partner and work with Anne Weidman and Strawbery Banke Museum to create artwork, and keepsakes from that artwork, that transport the viewer to a simpler time and place called Strawbery Banke.”

Small glass apothecary bottles decorated with replica labels from two 1900s Portsmouth druggists make great souvenirs for the Vice exhibit. Coleman’s (c. 1878-1910) was located at

New items arriving daily at the TYCO Visitors Center gift shop! the corner of Congress and Vaughan Streets in Portsmouth (roughly where The District restaurant is now). David Kimball’s store, in the early 1800s, operated from the build-ing now occupied by Federal Cigar.

Members receive a 10 percent discount on all items sold in the TYCO Visitors Center.

SPECIAL MEMBER BENEFIT!

During the month of September 2018, Strawbery Banke members receive 50 percent off regular daily admission to the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Dover and CMONH members receive 50 percent off daily admission to Strawbery Banke.
