TIZ THE LAW BRINGS FUNNY CIDE OWNERS BACK TO CHURCHILLBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

The partners in Sackatoga Stable memorably arrived at Churchill

Downs in a school bus to cheer their New York-bred gelding Funny Cide to victory in the 2003 Kentucky Derby (G1).

Sixteen years later, Sackatoga is a couple of weeks away from a Churchill Downs homecoming, ready to start Tiz the Law in the $300,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) Nov. 30, the partnership's first starter at the track since the 2003 Derby. This time, a bus might not suffice; the 2-year-old New York-bred has a whole bandwagon of supporters, in the partnership and out.

Perfect in two starts, Tiz the Law is widely regarded as one of the country's top juveniles. He romped in an Aug. 8 debut at Saratoga Race Course going 6 1/2 furlongs and then won the Oct. 5 Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. Stuck in traffic for nearly three-quarters of that mile race, he burst past horses once shown daylight and pulled away by four lengths.

That victory earned him a free berth via the

Breeders' Cup Challenge Series in the Nov. 1 TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita Park, where he would have been among the favorites. But free or not, Sackatoga and its conservative-minded trainer, Barclay Tagg, declined the offer.

As in 2003, Sackatoga's eye is on another prize: the Derby. The Kentucky Jockey Club was chosen as the preferred path to get him there, avoiding what the connections perceived as challenging travel for their young horse from New York to California and providing an extra four weeks of recovery between

races."You're talking about shipping a horse 3,000

miles there, 3,000 miles back, being in a strange environment," said Jack Knowlton, managing partner of Sackatoga Stable. "We just felt, and Barclay said this, 'If you really want to have the best chance to have a nice 3-year-old, don't try to overdo it as a 2-year-old.'"

In examining options for a final start for the horse at 2 before he winters in Florida, Sackatoga chose the 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Jockey Club instead of the 1 1/8-mile, $250,000 Remsen Stakes (G2) Dec. 7 at Aqueduct, providing a more gradual extension in distance and a reduced risk of winter weather.

the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, it will be without many of the original Sackatoga partners in Funny Cide. Of the group of 10 owners in the 2003 Derby winner, only Knowlton and Lew Titterton remain involved with Tiz the Law. Some partners died, and others "fell away" from horse ownership, Knowlton said.

After racing, Funny Cide took up residence in the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park in December 2008, where fans continue to visit the champion 3-year-old of 2003. He has also made periodic visits to tracks such as Churchill Downs and Saratoga, where his accomplishments were celebrated. Besides the Derby, Funny Cide won such prestigious races as the Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico and Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Belmont.

Besides Knowlton and Titterton, the current group of Sackatoga owners includes 30 others from across the country, most of whom are investors in other horses in the partnership.

The colt, by Constitution out of the Tiznow mare Tizfiz, has trained sharply at Belmont since the Champagne, rattling off spirited breezes and leaving workmates far behind on multiple occasions. Two more works are scheduled for Nov. 17 and Nov. 24, Tagg said, depending on weather and other considerations.

"Originally, I thought he might not be a long-distance horse, but his stride looks like one," Tagg said. "His bearing is one. Everything about him makes it seem that nothing will be a problem for him. I might be wrong about all that. A mile and a quarter, he might not like it, I don't know.

"We've only had the two races and a bunch of workouts, and nothing seems to faze him. We're going to shoot for the big one if we can."

Sackatoga—a name derived from the original partners' roots in Sackets Harbor, N.Y., and its current ties to Saratoga Springs—typically buys only a few horses each year, all New York-breds. Other than Funny Cide, who retired with earnings of over $3.5 million, and Tiz the Law, with an expanding bankroll of $317,900, no others have won graded stakes since the partnership's inception in 2000.

Through this long stretch, Sackatoga and Tagg have remained together. Knowlton remains proud of the veteran horseman and his assistant Robin Smullen.

"I tell everybody when you have a trainer that took you to the Kentucky Derby and win that race, which is the race that everybody in the world wants to win, you better have a very good reason to break up the partnership," Knowlton said. "Largely as the operating manager at Sackatoga Stable, I am the one that deals

with Barclay and Robin on a day-to-day basis. We have a good understanding. I respect the two of them for what they do with the horses, the care they give the horses. I tell everybody, 'Barclay Tagg, give him a good horse and he knows what to do with it.' I try not to get in the way."

Tiz the Law provides Sackatoga with a new opportunity: the potential of a stallion. Knowlton already has fielded inquiries from stud farms, and more will follow should Tiz the Law win the Kentucky Jockey Club. A victory would position him for a bright 3-year-old campaign and earn him Eclipse Award support for year-end championship voting.

"Funny Cide came under the radar screen. Until he won the Derby, he had no respect from anybody, really," Knowlton said. "This guy, he's right out there. So in a sense, it's different. There was never really any pressure with Funny Cide until after he won the Derby. With this guy, everybody is scrutinizing every move you make because, at this point, he is one of the horses that people feel have a real opportunity on the first Saturday in May." BH

DEL MAR CANCELS NOV. 21 CARD DUE TO RAIN IN FORECASTBy BloodHorse Staff

With rain forecast next week in San Diego, Del Mar announced its Nov. 21 race card has been

canceled. This action was due to “an abundance of cau-tion,” the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club said in a Nov. 15 news release, as forecast precipitation could have resulted in a muddy main track and soft turf course.

Entries for next Thursday’s card were scheduled to be taken Nov. 16.

Del Mar said it consulted with industry stakeholders, including the Thoroughbred Owners of California and its regulator, the California Horse Racing Board, and all parties agreed the cancellation provided for the safest possible racing environment.

“We know this is unusual for Del Mar,” said DMTC executive vice president for racing Tom Robbins, “but equine and rider safety is always our primary concern. We’ll make a call next week as to whether or not we’ll have training on Wednesday and Thursday. We plan on drawing entries for next Friday’s card (Nov. 22) this Sunday and we’ll race, weather permitting.”

The cancellation comes at a time when tracks in California are cautiously handling when to race during periods of inclement weather. Persistent rain that led to training and racing over sealed racetracks has been considered a possible factor that led to a spike in equine fatalities this year during the wet winter months at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia. SEVERAL NEW YORK TRAINERS TO PAY BACK WAGES, DAMAGESBy BloodHorse Staff

According to a news release from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a number

of prominent New York-based trainers—through their business entities—will pay approximately $1 million in back wages, damages, and penalties to nearly 350 workers following a New York State Depart-ment of Labor investigation of backstretch employers.

The release said a number of trainers are paying wages, damages, and/or penalties, including multiple Eclipse Award winner Chad Brown, who this year reached a settlement with the U.S Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division on similar issues; Kiaran McLaughlin; Linda Rice; and James Jerkens.

"We have zero tolerance for wage theft and will hold accountable any employer who unlawfully withholds wages or who does anything to intimidate, threaten, or deny these hardworking employees what they are owed," Cuomo said in the release. "We stand

proudly with workers and will fight tooth and nail to protect their hard-earned wages from unscrupulous employers who break the law."

The state Department of Labor received information alleging wage theft and substandard housing conditions.

According to the release, wages were recovered based on the following violations:

• Brown, as Chad C. Brown Inc., violated minimum wage and overtime requirements, affecting 119 employees who acted as grooms and hot walkers. As the employer, Brown is paying $526,427.35 in wages due, liquidated damages, and penalties. Brown also violated federal and New York law by knowingly charging steep fees to workers from other countries who came to work on special visas, demanding $1,500 in cash per worker—that money along with the unpaid wages will be returned to the workers.

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 10 OF 38SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2019

• Kiaran McLaughlin Racing Stable Inc. violated minimum wage requirements, affecting 89 employees who acted as grooms and hot walkers. The employer is paying $304,646.82 in wages due, liquidated damages, and penalties.

• Linda Rice Racing violated minimum wage and overtime requirements affecting 113 employees and is paying $133,747.25 in unpaid wages, liquidated damages, and penalties.

• James A. Jerkens Inc. violated minimum wage requirements, affecting 17 employees, and is paying $13,991.00 in unpaid wages, liquidated damages, and penalties.

Five additional employers are paying roughly $13,000 for wage theft and failing to keep proper payroll records.

According to the release, the following stables violated state labor laws and committed wage theft. They have been ordered by the Commissioner of Labor to pay these amounts:

• Shivmangal Racing Stables LLC and Doodnauth Shivmangal violated minimum wage and overtime regulations, affecting eight employees, and owes

$179,283.44 in unpaid wages, liquidated damages, and penalties.

• Leo O'Brien Stable Inc. violated record-keeping and meal period requirements, affecting two employees, and owes $88,809.78 in unpaid wages, liquidated damages, and penalties. The same company has additionally paid $550 in unpaid wages to one employee.

"Everyone loses when an employer engages in wage theft—the employees, other businesses that follow the rules, and eventually the employer when they get caught," said New York State Department of Labor commissioner Roberta Reardon. "This is a reminder of our no-tolerance policy for wage theft of any kind and that we will aggressively pursue justice and compensation for all workers whose wages have been stolen. We will not allow employers who cheat their workers out of pay to create an uneven playing field for all New York businesses. This is about fairness for workers and for businesses."

The release noted New York state's Thoroughbred industry is an important economic driver that brings more than $3 billion annually to the state and supports nearly 19,000 jobs, adding it is imperative all businesses are given the same opportunity to thrive and that everyone who works in the Thoroughbred industry is paid the proper wages they have earned. CHAMPION AND GRADE 1 WINNER PERFECT SOUL PENSIONEDBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Perfect Soul has been pensioned from stallion duty at Darby

Dan Farm and will reside at owner Charles Fipke's farm near Paris, Ky., the farm announced Nov. 15.

The 21-year-old Fipke homebred and son of Sadler's Wells sired 25 black-type performers, including grade 1 winners Seeking the Soul and Perfect Shirl. His progeny earned nearly $19.6 million from 12 crops of racing age and averaged $50,767 per starter.

Perfect Soul's leading earner is multimillionaire Seeking the Soul, who won the 2017 Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) and this year won the Stephen Foster Stakes (G2) and was runner-up in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1). He also was grade 1-placed in the 2018 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) en route to earnings of $3,414,153 for Fipke and trainer Dallas Stewart.

Perfect Shirl made Perfect Soul the sire of a Breeders' Cup winner when she captured the 2011 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) over an international field for owner/breeder Fipke and trainer Roger Attfield. Perfect Shirl banked $1,390,729 while finishing on the board 11 times in 16 starts.

Perfect Soul's runners made noise in the North American classics, too, with Perfect Shower winning the 2009 Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine and Golden Soul finishing second in the 2013 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) to Orb.

As a racehorse, Perfect Soul earned more than $1.5

million while winning seven of 21 starts. He was named Canada's champion grass horse for 2003 and set a course record at Keeneland in the 2004 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (G2T), going a mile in 1:33.54. In 2003, he won the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) and the King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap (G2T) at Woodbine. Perfect Soul placed three other times in grade 1 competition, finishing third in the Atto Mile Stakes (G1T) in 2003 and improving to second in the same race in 2004. He was runner-up as well in the 2002 Niagara Breeders' Cup Handicap (G1T).

Seeking the Soul emulated his sire in 2017 when he set a track record at Keeneland, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.36. Now 6, Seeking the Soul is one of the early probable entrants for his year's Clark Handicap Nov. 29. The horse began serious preparation for the race with a half-mile breeze in :48 4/5 the morning of Nov. 15 at Churchill Downs. BH

INTO MISCHIEF SETS NORTH AMERICAN RECORD BY WINNERSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Spendthrift Farm's marquee sire, Into Mischief, continues building on a remarkable year that has

already elevated him to the top of the North American sires standings by progeny earnings.

A big driver behind the 14-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday's rise to the summit has been his extraordinarily high number of winners. His success by this metric pushed him past a new milestone Nov. 9 when his 2-year-old son Authentic won his debut by 1 1/2 lengths in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Del Mar. The victory made Into Mischief the first North American sire to achieve 200 winners in a single year.

As of Nov. 15, 54.5% of Into Mischief's 369 starters in 2019 have become winners. For his lifetime statistics so far, 75% of his 805 foals of racing age have started in a race. Of those foals, 54% (436) are winners.

"Into Mischief is a well-made and especially good-minded horse, and his progeny are very workmanlike in their approach to training," Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey told BloodHorse in August

when the sire rose to the top of the standings. "They like what they do, and on top of that, they have tremendous ability. So even though he has larger crops, he continues to get a high percentage that are mentally and physically sound. On top of that, he gets high-quality runners."

Northern Hemisphere Sires of More Than 200 Winners in One Year

It's appropriate Into Mischief's single-season record by winners was achieved with a 2-year-old, because the sire is also North America's leading sire of juveniles by earnings and number of winners. Thirty-two of the sire's 84 runners as of Nov. 15 have become winners. He leads BloodHorse.com's standings for leading sires of 2-year-olds, with $2,504,808 in purses year to date, which account for 15% of his total progeny earnings from all runners.

Authentic was bred in Kentucky by Peter Blum Thoroughbreds out of the Mr. Greeley mare Flawless, who has now produced three winners from as many foals to race.

Blum, through Bridie Harrison, sold Authentic for $350,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale to SF Bloodstock and Starlight West. The colt

is trained by Bob Baffert and races for SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Fred Hertrich III, John Fielding, and Golconda Stables.

Into Mischief didn't waste much time adding to his winners count, picking up the 201st at Churchill Downs Nov. 14 with Taraz, another first-time starter. The Juddmonte Farms homebred won the 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight by 7 1/2 lengths. The filly is trained by Brad Cox.

Twenty-two other Northern Hemisphere sires have been represented by more than 200 winners in a single season, and all of them stood or stand in Japan. Sunday Silence, the late dual American classic winner and 13-time leading sire in Japan, holds the Northern Hemisphere record with 277 winners in 2004. The son of Halo also had the highest number of single-season winners in 2001 (207), 2003 (251), and 2005 (258). King Kamehameha, a son of Kingmambo, has the second-highest number of single-season winners with 268 in 2015. BH

ON RACINGWITH JAY HOVDEY

THROUGH BARRETT'S LENSBy Jay Hovdeyt @JayHovdey

The collection of photographers arrayed along the inner rail of the main track near the Santa Anita

Park finish line stretched for nearly 50 yards as the fi-nal moments of the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) unfolded. Bricks and Mortar and United were putting on a great show worthy of all the artistry media cover-age could muster. But why, wondered a reporter with nothing more than a notebook and a pen, were there so many shutterbugs? Surely, they all would be getting the same shot.

Well, no. In fact, there are as many variables in capturing an image as there are in composing a paragraph. Every photographer answers to their own standards of light, exposure, shooting angle, and composition. Beyond those elements, the anatomy of the horse lends itself to infinite interpretation. Rarely still, ever on the watch, the horse demands the kind of visual interpretation afforded by those many lenses trained upon Bricks and Mortar, United, Vino Rosso, and the rest of the Breeders' Cup racing herd.

There was something missing, though. Some element of the racing universe out of balance. For the first time in, like, forever, a Breeders' Cup transpired at Santa Anita without Katey Barrett.

For those not immediately familiar with the work of Barrett, let's put it this way: If Barbara Livingston is the

Georgia O'Keeffe of equine photographers—a winner of four individual Eclipse Awards for her work—then Barrett's images seem to descend from Van Gogh, Modigliani, and Monet. Photographers of younger generations look upon the quality of Livingston's work as something they might someday approximate with luck, hard work, and technological advances. They behold Barrett's painterly exposures and shrug, "I'll never be able to do that, but I'm glad someone did."

As an introduction to Barrett's first collection of work in "The Light Touch," I wrote this: "If Katey Barrett has a signature, it is the wondrous sense of 'movement' she gives to much of her most admired work. The technique requires a carefully calculated flinch of the camera at slow shutter speeds. The resulting smears and waves in an otherwise recognizable image provoke fresh and revealing interpretations."

That description has held up well through Barrett's ongoing evolution through the various demands of film, infrared imaging, and finally—reluctantly—digital. Along the way, she has embraced all manner of horseflesh, from the wild mustangs of her earliest endeavors in the field, through decades of documenting the cream of the world's show jumpers, to a long and satisfying love affair with the Thoroughbred racehorse.

At 87, Barrett's spirit continues to be willing, but the flesh has started to let her down. The years of tracking mustangs in the wild finally caught up with her knees. No longer will you find Barrett stalking her shots from among the trees overlooking the Santa Anita hillside turf course. Racing to meet the perfect light requires

younger legs, which is why she was so sorely missed at this year's Breeders' Cup.

"Santa Anita was so nice about it," Barrett said. "They offered to get me a golf cart to haul me around. But I can't work like that.

"I'm not going to say I've retired, because as long as I can stand up, I'll still shoot," Barrett added. "I'll never get that out of my blood."

Santa Anita Park remains Barrett's primary client, as evidenced by the months of May, July, and September in the 2019 Santa Anita calendar. And her archived work pops up often to illustrate just how beautiful the sport of racing can be when viewed from a unique photographic perspective.

A few years ago, the Keeneland Library secured a comprehensive trove of Barrett's Thoroughbred racing

photographs, assuring their access for as long as there is a Keeneland Library. And now the United States Hunter Jumper Association is raising money to acquire Barrett's vast portfolio of showjumping images—artistic and historic—dating to the early 1980s and featuring such familiar names as Olympic medalists Hap Hansen, Robert Ridland, Ian Millar, and Melanie Smith, as well as Gem Twist, Big Ben, and the other jumpers who took their riders to great heights. Information about the acquisition of the Barrett collection can be found at ushja.org/foundation.

There have been 40 individual photographers singled out for Eclipse Award honors since Art Rogers of the L.A. Times was the first of the tribe celebrated in 1971 for his picture of "a tightly bunched field, turning for home at Hollywood Park, framed in foliage," according to his newspaper (sounds very Barrett). Several photographers besides Livingston have been recognized more than once—including Rayetta Burr, Michael J. Marten, Michael Burns, Matt Goins, and

Michael Clevenger—and the digital age has cultivated many new talents who someday will join the club.

And yet, there is something wrong with this picture. Katey Barrett has never received an Eclipse Award. There is no doubt her images will continue to celebrate horses far longer than any transitory honors. Still, I wish there was something that could be done to fill that gaping hole on the list. BH

MR. MISUNDERSTOOD GOES FOR RIVER CITY REPEATBy Christine Osert @BH_COser

Flurry Racing Stables' Mr. Misunderstood, winner of the River City Handicap (G3T) on Churchill Downs'

turf a year ago, defends his title in the $175,000 fea-ture Nov. 16, facing nine others in the 1 1/8-mile grass event.

The 5-year-old Archarcharch gelding has gone off as the favorite in five consecutive races dating to the 2018 River City but is looking for his first win of 2019. The Brad Cox trainee has been on the board in three of four races this year, including the Sept. 29 Remington Green Stakes at Remington Park in which he rallied from 10th and missed Space Mountain, who also burst from the back of the field, by half a length.

Mr. Misunderstood also picked up major Churchill victories in the 2018 Wise Dan Stakes (G2T) and the 2017 Commonwealth Turf Stakes (G3T) and Jefferson Cup Stakes. He is 4-for-5 on the Churchill Downs turf course, finishing third in a June 27 allowance.

Space Mountain is one of three Mike Maker entries in the River City. Owned by Hooties Racing and Michael Hui, Space Mountain was a

$62,500 claim at Gulfstream Park in February. The Remington Green was his first stakes win, and he was eighth in the Oct. 17 Sycamore Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland in his most recent start. Maker also entered grade 3-placed Cullum Road and last-out allowance winner Bemma's Boy.

Admission Office, an Amerman Racing Stables homebred trained by Brian Lynch, has placed in multiple graded events but is still in search of a black-type victory. The 4-year-old Point of Entry colt hit the board in both the May 18 Dixie Stakes (G2T) at Pimlico Race Course and the June 15 Wise Dan Stakes. He receives class relief after running 11th in the Oct. 5 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland.

Also looking to break through is English stakes winner Emmaus, who was second in the June 1 Connaught Cup Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine—beaten a neck by eventual Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T) winner El Tormenta—and won a Keeneland allowance in his most recent start.

Ward Pitfield's Get Western, who defeated Cullum Road and Space Mountain to win the restricted Old Friends Stakes Sept. 5 at Kentucky Downs two starts ago, is the one to catch in the River City.

Blue Sky Kowboy, My Bariley, and Lascaux complete the field. BH

BAFFERT'S HIGH VELOCITY, THOUSAND WORDS HEAD BOB HOPEBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Although the Nov. 16 featured race at Del Mar is named after late entertainer Bob Hope,

it is another Bob—Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert—who is often the center of attention for the $100,000 Bob Hope Stakes (G3), having won it nine times since 1996.

He looks for his 10th win Saturday when he runs High Velocity and Thousand Words in the seven-furlong race for 2-year-olds, a race that often launches its winner into the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), a $200,000 race Dec. 7 going 1 1/16 miles at Los Alamitos Race Course. Only four others are lined up to face the duo, including a pair trained by Doug O'Neill: Strongconstitution and Howbeit.

Even without Baffert's winning Bob Hope history, High Velocity and Thousand Words would be imposing entrants, having won their only starts at Santa Anita Park. High Velocity scored Oct. 13, racing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.60 on his way to a two-length victory, and Thousand Words was a half-length winner Oct. 26, going 6 1/2 furlongs in a snappy 1:16.77.

Both were fancied auction horses at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. High Velocity sold for $350,000 to agent Ben Glass, purchasing on behalf of owners Gary and Mary West, and Thousand Words fetched $1 million from owners Albaugh Family Stables and Spendthrift Farm.

Drayden Van Dyke rides High Velocity, a son of Quality Road out of the grade 3-placed Dixie Union dam Ketel Twist.

Flavien Prat has the mount on Thousand Words, a colt by Pioneerof the Nile out of multiple graded stakes winner Pomeroys Pistol, by Pomeroy.

Baffert has won three of the past four renewals of the Bob Hope with Toews On Ice (2015), Mastery (2016), and Mucho Gusto (2018). The latter was

later second to stablemate Improbable in last year's Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity when that race was a grade 1.

O'Neill's Strongconstitution is expected to be the more fancied at the betting windows of his two entries. He won a five-furlong maiden race Aug. 23 at Del Mar on grass before finishing second, beaten a neck by stablemate Fore Left, in the restricted Oct. 20 Sunny Slope Stakes at Santa Anita. Pocketed in third during the early portion of that race, he dove inside loose-on-the-lead Fore Left for the stretch run but proved unable to pass in relatively intimidating quarters.

Abel Cedillo replaces Martin Garcia aboard the 2-year-old Constitution colt owned by Roadrunner Racing and Sayjay Racing.

C T R Stables' Howbeit, by Secret Circle, is more of an outsider for O'Neill, stepping into the stakes ranks for the first time after winning a maiden race at Los Alamitos Sept. 21 and a starter allowance Oct. 10 at Santa Anita. Rafael Bejarano rides.

The other horses in the field are Rager, a maiden winner on debut in a 5 1/2-furlong turf race Oct. 20 at Santa Anita, and Zimba Warrior, third in the Sunny Slope Stakes.

KEENELAND NOVEMBER GROSS THROUGH DAY 10 SURPASSES 2018By Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

With two days remaining in the Keeneland No-vember Breeding Stock Sale, cumulative gross

sales have already exceeded the gross from the entire 2018 sale. The Nov. 15 session began the sale's final three-day Book 6.

From 3,992 horses cataloged for the first 10 sessions, Keeneland reported 2,370 horses have been sold for $198,257,400, an average price of $83,653 and a $31,000 median. The buyback rate is 20.1%.

For the entire sale a year ago, 2,644 horses grossed $197,851,300 for an average price of $74,830 and a $25,000 median price.

During Friday's session, the $1,941,400 gross for 202 horses sold was down 33.6% from the same day a year ago, with the average price of $9,611 declining 20% and the session median even at $6,500.

Topping the session was Upandtotheright, a gray/

roan daughter of Creative Cause purchased by John Sikura's Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa for $77,000.

Consigned by Lane's End, agent, as Hip 3766, the 3-year-old was believed to be in foal to Connect. Produced from the winning Rubiano mare Comfort Zone, Upandtotheright is a half sister to multiple grade 3 winner The Pamplemousse and stakes winner American Lady.

"She was beautiful," said Hill 'n' Dale's Donato Lanni. "It's a good female family, and she was a good-looking mare."

Lanni has been active throughout the sale. He is among a handful of agents who were buying at the top of the market during Book 1 and were still working it hard during the 10th day of the sale that continues through Nov. 17.

"You've got to turn every rock over," Lanni said of his late-sale buying activity. "You can't stop working. I plan to still be here Sunday (final day). You never know what you're going to find. You have to be here.

"I like buying in the last book; it's fun. It's a different crowd, but there's a lot of trading going on. It's just a different type of trading."

The top-priced weanling Friday was Hip 3904, a Moyhaymen colt purchased by J & S Racing for $70,000 from the consignment of James B. Keogh's Grovendale. Bred in Kentucky by Carrie Ann Walker, the colt is out of the War Chant mare Gayatri, a half sister to grade 2 winner Kumari Continent and grade 3 winner and stakes producer Passion.

Another buyer who likes to shop the Keeneland sale in the waning days is Brandon Rice, buying weanlings to resell through RiceHorse Stable that he operates with his wife, Ali.

"Because I'm helping my wife break and train the yearlings we've purchased, I can't come up for the entire sale, so I measure my pocketbook, which is not very long, and found it's best for me to come up for Books 5 and 6," Rice said. "Last year, I got some horses in these books I was pretty proud of, so I think I will be a regular here at this time of the year.

"At this point, (sellers) get realistic with their reserves, and guys with short pocketbooks can play ball here."

Rice's father, Bryan Rice, purchased eventual TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Storm the Court for $5,000 as a short yearling and resold him for $60,000 as a 2-year-old.

"My eye (for a horse) comes from my grandfather and my father, so I use that same eye to see if I can buy something fancy," Rice said.

The penultimate session Nov. 16 begins at 10 a.m. BH

END OF AN ERA FOR PATCHEN WILKES' WHITE HORSESBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Beautiful Devil, a 7-year-old mare scheduled to be sold Nov. 16 at the Keeneland November Breeding

Stock Sale, lacks the pedigree attractive to most buyers. The only black type on the catalog page for

the daughter of Devil His Due being offered by Warrendale Sales, agent, as Hip 4147 are two stakes-placed horses appearing in the third and fifth dams.

But what the mare lacks in residual value, she more than makes up for with her looks. She will be the last white horse sold that was bred by Patchen Wilkes Farm, the Lexington nursery of businessman Warren Rosenthal, who died in October at 96.

In foal to Speightster, who is represented by his first crop of yearlings this year, Beautiful Devil was a winner who has produced white foals, including a Flat Out filly that was sold for $14,000 at this year's

Keeneland September Yearling Sale.Beautiful Devil is out of the winning Skip Away

mare Spot of Beauty, whose best foal from four winners is White Dragon, a Cowboy Cal horse who earned the U.S. equivalent of $136,751 in Japan.

The mare traces to White Beauty, the first Thoroughbred with a white coat to be registered by The Jockey Club, and Beautiful Devil's foals represent the seventh generation of white Thoroughbreds in the line.

Warrendale's Hunter Simms said Beautiful Devil has value for the right buyer.

"She has produced only white foals, and all have been correct," Simms said. "She does not have a page that most buyers like to see, but she is a bit of a novelty.

"She is a horse that someone could add to their broodmare band, especially if they are part of horse country, and have some fun with." BH

KENTUCKY DOWNS BEGINS RENOVATIONBy BloodHorse Staff

Kentucky Downs officially embarked on a new era under the ownership headed by Ron Winchell and

Marc Falcone with the Nov. 14 groundbreaking for the $25 million first phase of the expansion and renovation of the racetrack and year-round gaming and entertain-ment facility.

"Today was starting the process: We're going to make it bigger and better from top to bottom," Winchell said after the ceremonial shoveling of dirt by owners, civic leaders, and key project personnel. "When you come in here a year from now, it's not going to look like the Kentucky Downs you're used to the last couple of years.

"You'll have a couple of new restaurants. You'll have 18,000 to 20,000 feet of expanded building that's going to be more up to date, a better and more comfortable feel," said Winchell, a prominent horse owner and breeder in addition to being a Nevada gaming and entertainment entrepreneur. "It's just going to be a better experience overall for guests, so when they walk in the door, they're going to have an elevated experience from what you have today from the aesthetics perspective."

Kentucky Downs, purchased by the new ownership group in March, has become an economic engine, entertainment hub, and tourism draw for the region. The expansion is expected to increase the workforce by about 20%, the owners said.

Falcone said Kentucky Downs is still working on specific restaurants, "but it's going to be a much broader offering than what we have today at Kentucky Downs. There will be options of steak, Italian—just a more diverse menu of offerings."

Kentucky Downs also will renovate the existing facility during the first phase, with construction in stages so as not to disrupt the gaming operation, he said.

"This really embarks on the next phase of growth for Kentucky Downs," said Falcone, a prominent casino executive and financial specialist. "We're quite excited about what we've got planned. Over the next several months, you'll start to see steel come out of

the ground. There will be some exciting things, a more visual picture we'll be able to share. Most important, we need to thank all of our local partners, all the support organizations in Simpson County and the city of Franklin. Equally as important is thanking all the hard-working employees of Kentucky Downs. … We look forward to continuing to grow that workforce."

Making the economic success story possible is Kentucky Downs' previous owners' 2011 gamble on implementing historical horse racing, the innovative electronic technology based on the result of previously run races that meshes the excitement of video slot machines with the time-honored parimutuel system that is the linchpin of American horse racing.

Kentucky Downs was the first track in the state to install HHR, the result being a blueprint other tracks have followed. As a result, the Kentucky racing circuit, which benefits from purse money generated from HHR, not only was righted following years of decline but now is the envy of the country and increasingly attracting horsemen, horses, and their associated jobs into the commonwealth from out of state.

Civic leaders in attendance made it clear their communities are major beneficiaries as well.

"In recent years, Kentucky Downs has become more of a destination than ever before, and while that is good for Kentucky Downs, it is great for all of Franklin and Simpson County," said Steve Thurmond, executive director of the Franklin-Simpson Chamber of Commerce. "From the shops on the Square to the hotels, motels, and restaurants, we all benefit from the successes here at Kentucky Downs. Today marks the beginning of a new era for the company and for the community as we break ground on this multimillion-dollar expansion."

The first of a projected three phases will almost double the area for historical horse racing gaming terminals, whose numbers will grow from 753 to 1,200. The first phase is scheduled for completion before the 2020 live race meet begins Wednesday, Sept. 2.

"This is a great event for Franklin and Simpson County," Mayor Larry Dixon said. "Kentucky Downs being here will bring lots of people to downtown, to this area. … We're excited about this huge adventure for Kentucky Downs."

Simpson County Judge Executive Mason Barnes told the owners: "We really appreciate the investment you're making here in Franklin and Simpson County. … Kentucky Downs, year in and year out, I think

they are one of if not the largest draw for tourism in Simpson County."

Falcone said a potential hotel, to be located on the opposite end of the main building, is being planned for a subsequent phase.

"Kentucky Downs has had a great history here, going back to when it was originally called Dueling Grounds," Falcone said. "As Ron and I conceptualized what the next phase of expansion would be, it was really taking the next step into creating that broader entertainment destination. We're going to increase food and beverage offerings, increase entertainment offerings, more live music—just a better experience. It's going to be much more exciting, much more fun, much more higher energy—and taking into account the great history that the track has always had in this community.

"This sits in an ideal location, 30 minutes outside of Nashville, an exploding population getting close to two million people. We said, 'Hey, this is 300 acres of an opportunity to do much more than racing and historical horse racing. There are opportunities for much broader things with the real estate we have here long term. We looked at this as a 10-year project to encompass how to maximize and create a destination here in Franklin, Kentucky."

Asked whether Kentucky Downs would pursue casino gaming or sports betting after the recent election of Andy Beshear as Kentucky's governor, Winchell said: "We're happy with where we're at with HHR. We look forward to working with the new governor on anything that may be proposed. It's obviously all very new, so we'll wait and see what happens.

"We knew what the landscape was when we bought the track (when chances were slim for legislation allowing for expanding gaming). We also know we're happy with HHR, expanding where we're at today and to keep growing it. What comes down the road, we'll see when that gets proposed." BH

OXO EQUINE'S MUNDAYE CALL TO TRY MAIDEN RANKS AGAINBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Don Chatlos, who took over the training of Larry Best's OXO Equine horses, will drop the own-

er's $950,000 purchase Mundaye Call back into the maiden ranks Nov. 16 in the sixth race at Del Mar.

The second foal out of the unraced Warrior's Reward mare Reve d'Amour, Mundaye Call was purchased at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York, from the consignment of Denali Stud.

The Into Mischief filly was bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys Farm and touts a female family that includes her third dam, Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Blush With Pride, who is also a multiple graded stakes producer. Her progeny include group 2 winner Smolensk, the dam of Reve d'Amour, and grade 2 winner Better Than Honour, who was named Broodmare of the Year in 2007 after she foaled grade 1 winners Jazil and Rags to Riches.

Mundaye Call has raced twice, both at Saratoga Race Course. She finished second in a maiden special weight Aug. 11 and seventh in the Sept. 1 Spinaway Stakes (G1). She will leave from the rail Saturday with jockey Mike Smith aboard.

The 6 1/2-furlong maiden test for 2-year-old fillies is not without its challenges and features the Bob Baffert-trained Map Maker, a Liam's Map half sister to the stable's current star, McKinzie.

Map Maker, a Kentucky homebred for Summer Wind Equine, will be making her second start. She finished seventh Oct. 12 at Santa Anita Park when she bobbled at the start and was left near the back of the field.

The filly's most recent timed work indicated she may be ready to try again as she rolled through four furlongs in a bullet :47 3/5 Nov. 11 at Santa Anita. She is out of the grade 1-placed Petionville mare Runway Model.

Also providing competition will be LNJ Foxwoods homebred Parkour. The Carpe Diem filly finished second in her only start Oct. 27 at Santa Anita and returns for trainer Richard Mandella. Parkour is out of the grade 1-placed Speightstown mare Gemswick Park. BH

COMPETITIVE FIELD, TOP RIDERS AWAIT MILE CHAMPIONSHIPBy Bob Kieckhefer

A competitive field will be on hand for the Nov. 17 Mile Championship (G1) at Kyoto Racecourse,

with several grade 1 winners looking to return to glory. The jockey roster is at least as glittering as that

of the runners. Ryan Moore, William Buick, Oisin Murphy, and Christophe Soumillon all have mounts while riding on temporary licenses.

Danon Premium, a 4-year-old Deep Impact colt, comes to the Mile Championship on the back of a second-place finish—three lengths behind Almond Eye—in the Tenno Sho (Autumn, G1). Though he has six wins from nine starts, his only top-level win came in the 2017 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1) at Hanshin, also going a mile.

"The winner last time is a very strong horse, so it was an impressive performance in what was a tough race," assistant trainer Teruhiko Saruhashi said of the effort against Almond Eye. "Only at the end did he not quite have enough left, and he was coming back from a layoff. There's still room for improvement."

Three-year-olds have won the past two editions of the Mile Championship, and that age group is well represented this time around with Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1) runner-up Danon Kingly at the forefront.

Another by the late sire Deep Impact, Danon Kingly exits a victory in the Mainichi Okan (G2) at Tokyo Racecourse. Trainer Kiyoshi Hagiwara said, "Compared to how he was for the Derby,

I think last time he wasn't at his best. But I could evaluate him highly after he won (Mainichi Okan)."

Others looking to regain former glory are Mozu Ascot, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Frankel who won the 2018 Yasuda Kinen (G1) but then was 13th in the Mile Championship; Al Ain, winner of the Osaka Hai (G1) in March but 14th in the Tenno Sho (Autumn); and Indy Champ, winner of the Yasuda Kinen in June but then third in the Mainichi Okan.

Al Ain's trainer, Yasuo Ikee, echoed Saruhachi's thoughts about Almond Eye's dominance. "The first two home in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) were very strong, as well as it being a strong field generally," Ikee said. "It was the first race back for the horse and he drew the widest gate, so these things went against him."

Moore has the mount on Al Ain. BHs Share this story

BEST SOLUTION TO STAND AT GESTÜT AUENQUELLEBy Martin Stevens/Racing Post

Best Solution, a three-time top-level winner for Godolphin, will take up covering duties at Gestüt

Auenquelle next year with his introductory fee set at €6,500 (US$7,154) and shares also available.

The 5-year-old son of Kodiac has been purchased by a consortium of German studs comprising Auenquelle, Gestüt Brümmerhof, Gestüt Ittlingen, and Gestüt Röttgen.

"We're confident Best Solution offers outstanding value for money on attractive terms and represents an excellent opportunity for breeders," said Brümmerhof's Gregor Baum.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained bay is well known in Germany, where he notched a group 1 double in the Longines Grosser Preis von Berlin and the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden last year. He also won the

Princess of Wales's Arqana Racing Club Stakes (G2) and Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (G1) at 4.

Best Solution brings strong 2-year-old form to the table. He won the Dubai 100 Autumn Stakes (G3) and split superstars Waldgeist and Capri when he finished second in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (G1).

He took the Betfred Derby Trial and Worthingtons "Indigo Leisure" St. Simon Stakes (G3) and also finished second in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis-Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (G1) at 3, although he failed to fire in two starts at 5 this year.

Best Solution was bred by Cecil and Martin McCracken out of the placed Kingmambo mare Al Andalyya, a half sister to German listed winner Kosmische and Prix Hocquart (G2) runner-up Cape Clear Island.

The dam is out of Kushnarenkovo, a group 3-placed Sadler's Wells sister to 2003 St. Leger (G1) winner Brian Boru and to the dam of Investec Derby (G1) and Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) hero Workforce.

Best Solution is one of four group 1 winners for Tally-Ho Stud flagship stallion Kodiac—along with Fairyland, Hello Youmzain, and Tiggy Wiggy—and one of 25 pattern scorers by him overall.

He was a 90,000 guineas ($144,869) purchase by Godolphin at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

APPLEBY HOPING FOR BETTER WITH D'BAI AND SETTING SAILBy James Burn/Racing Post

Charlie Appleby, who last year left Australia with a Lexus Melbourne Cup (G1) on his CV, has not

enjoyed such a fruitful adventure this time around but aims to sign off with success at Sandown Hillside Race-course in Melbourne Nov. 16, when he saddles D'bai and Setting Sail in group events.

Appleby memorably provided Britain with its first Melbourne Cup winner when Cross Counter captured the showpiece 12 months ago, but that horse managed only eighth in this month's edition, and stablemate Ispolini was controversially scratched on veterinary advice.

A group 2 winner at Meydan in January, D'bai has been off since finishing eighth in the Schweppes All Aged Stakes (G1) at Randwick in April.

He returns in the 6 1/2-furlong Kevin Heffernan Stakes (G3) Saturday.

"He had most of the summer off. He didn't travel back from Sydney overly great," Appleby's traveling representative, Chris Connett, said. "But he's come down to Melbourne great, and he really looks like he's settled in, showing enthusiasm in his gallops.

"He's got a high level of form. He won a group 2 at the start of the year in Dubai, and his form from the win at Haydock (in June 2018) was behind some very solid horses, so he can mix it with the best of them."

D'bai will be ridden in the £84,000 race by James

Doyle, who also partners Setting Sail in the Big Screen Company Eclipse Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile group 3 that carries the same purse.

Second in the John Smiths Diamond Jubilee Cup Handicap at York in July, he then struck in an Epsom conditions race in August.

"We expect him to run well, he's traveled down well, and we've been very happy with how he's been training," Connett told Racing.com. "He has been a very consistent performer who's right on the cusp of being a listed or group 3 performer back in the U.K."

TIGER ROLL OUT UNTIL AT LEAST FEBRUARY AFTER INJURYBy David Jennings/Racing Post

Tiger Roll has suffered a setback that will rule him out of action until

February at the earliest, although con-nections are confident he will recover in time for the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The two-time Grand National winner has a small chip in a joint that was scheduled to be taken out Nov. 15, and Gigginstown racing manager Eddie O'Leary said the best-case scenario is a return in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan in February. If not, it will be straight to Cheltenham.

Tiger Roll, who won last year's Ladbrokes Ireland Boyne Hurdle, could make history at Aintree in April by becoming only the second horse after Red Rum to win three Grand Nationals.

"It is obviously not ideal, and I would have preferred if it didn't happen, but I would hope to have him back

for the Boyne Hurdle and then on to Cheltenham, all being well. That is what we are hoping for," trainer Gordon Elliott said.
