Bob Baffert, who won this race three times--from 2010 to 2013 with J “TDN Rising Stars” J Lookin at Lucky (Smart Strike), The Factor (War Front) and Secret Circle (Eddington)--sends Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday) this time. The $300,000 Keeneland September purchase for Watson, Pegram and Weitman was off slowly in his debut and finished fifth behind stablemate Bayern (Offlee Wild) Jan. 4. He graduated next out at Santa Anita Jan. 30, had a less-than-ideal journey in the Risen Star S. last time and finished a late-on-the scene fourth Feb. 22. The GIII Southwest S. trifecta will likely provide a formidable obstacle for the Baffert charge. Tapiture (Tapit), who won the aforementioned affair by 4 1/4 lengths with a field=s-best 98 Beyer Speed Figure, took the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. by the same margin two starts back at Churchill Downs Nov. 30. ARight now with the 3-year-olds, you just need to keep getting better and stay in the game,@ said trainer Steve Asmussen. ASome of them aren=t who they used to be and some of them are better than they were. That=s what makes the 3-year-old picture so interesting. He=s a very nice horse and he=s very talented. I=m a little concerned with the weight that he gives quality horses [today], but he=s doing well.@ Tapiture carries the 122 lb. highweight--between five and seven pounds more than his competitors. GI Hopeful S. winner Strong Mandate (Tiznow) will represent Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who completed last year=s Rebel exacta with eventual 3-year-old champion Will Take Charge (Unbridled=s Song) and GI Preakness S. hero Oxbow (Awesome Again). After a seventh in the GI Champagne S. last October and third in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, Strong Mandate was a wide second in the Southwest on seasonal debut. AWe=re just looking for a good trip,@ said Lukas. AWe=ve had three pretty rough trips, so we want a clean trip, just a chance to see what we=ve got. We=re interested in a good experience after he=s been knocked around a couple of times. Not having 12 in the field this time [as in the Southwest] will help a lot. This is the first time in his career that he drew well. Even as a 2-year-old he had all the outside posts.@ Cont. p3 SALTY LINEUP IN THE MARGARITA Hronis Racing LLC=s Iotapa (Afleet Alex) rolls into today=s GI Santa Margarita S. at Santa Anita off a career-best pillar-to-post victory in the GII Santa Maria S. going 1 1/16 miles at this venue Feb. 15. The John Sadler pupil has proven she can come from off-the-pace as well with a recent rallying second in the GII Santa Monica S. Jan. 25. She=ll be stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for the first time today. AShe=s only had three route races,@ Sadler noted. AShe was second behind Beholder (Henny Hughes) in the [GI] Santa Anita Oaks [last April]. She=s a forwardly placed horse going long and she=s doing well for the race. LORD WINDERMERE STRIKES GOLD On a day of dramatic twists and turns at Cheltenham,20-1 shot Lord Windermere (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}) prevailedin a thrilling three-way drive to the line in the Gold Cup,

surviving both aphoto-finish verdictand a stewards=enquiry to be namedthe winner. As the leading packground out the toughclimb for home afterthe last fence, LordWindermere driftedtowards thegrandstand rail, taking

the eventual second- and third-placed horses, On HisOwn (Ire) and The Giant Bolster (GB), with him asSilviniaco Conti (Fr) and last year=s winner Bobs Worth(Ire) weakened on the far side. After three miles, twofurlongs and 22 fences, just a short head andthree-quarters of a length separated the first threeacross the line.

An agonising near 15-minute wait for the stewards=decision eventually provided Jim Culloty with his firstwin in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the 10thanniversary of his third Gold Cup victory as a jockeyaboard Best Mate (Fr). He joins an elite group of men tohave both ridden and trained a Cheltenham Gold Cupwinner, the other three being Fred Winter, Pat Taaffeand Jonjo O'Neill. Lord Windermere, who becameCulloty=s first Festival winner last year when victoriousin the RSA Chase, was the third winner of the week forveteran owner Dr. Ronan Lambe from just threerunners. Lambe=s Dermot Weld-trained 6-year-old SilverConcorde (GB) won theWeatherbys ChampionBumper on Wednesday whileSpring Heeled, also trained byCulloty, took Thursday=sFulke Walwyn Kim MuirChallenge Cup. "They were the worst fewminutes of my life," said arelieved Culloty as the resultof the enquiry wasannounced. "This was sounbelievable that I almostexpected to lose the race. He won the RSA last yearand the obvious thing was to come to the Gold Cupthis time. We just tipped away with him and he wasnot right at Christmas, but we kept tipping away.@Cont. p9

Cheltenham Gold Cup cont.

Just as he was in last year=s RSA Chase, 8-year-oldLord Windermere was ridden by Davy Russell, who hadsuffered a blow on New Year=s Eve when he wassacked by Michael O=Leary from his job as retainedjockey for Gigginstown House Stud. Culloty added: "I'dtold Davy to take his time, but halfway >round Iwondered what he was doing. I wanted him to take histime and ride the horse to get a place but heexaggerated the waiting tactics a bit too much! We'djust said to drop in and take his time and not to panic.@ Russell was replaced as Gigginstown House=s rider byrising star of the weighing-room Bryan Cooper, whounderwent leg surgery on Wednesday after a fall atCheltenham. Drafted back in by the team, Russell=sGold Cup triumph was preceded by a win for O=Leary inthe JCB Triumph Hurdle aboard Tiger Roll (Ire), while anextraordinary day for the jockey was sealed in theFestival finale aboard Savello, bringing GigginstownHouse Stud=s tally on Friday to four wins, having alsostruck with Very Wood (Fr) and Don Poli. Russell said: AWhen I was walking in to the coursethis morning I saw the Gold Cup on display and I said Imight as well take a picture of it because I=d never holdit, but now I can.@ Ruby Walsh, the most successful jockey of all time atthe Cheltenham Festival who had added a further threevictories to his score this week, was taken to hospitalwith a broken arm after his mount Abbyssial (Ire)suffered a dramatic fall in Friday=s first race. His GoldCup mount On His Own was instead partnered byDavid Casey, who missed out on feature-race successby just the narrowest of margins.

Old Favorites Aid Festival Appeal... For jump racing fans fortunate enough to be at theCheltenham Festival every March, there are plenty ofhorses who have weaved their way into hearts and

minds, and those such asQuevega (Fr) (Robin DesChamps {Fr}) and BigBuck=s (Fr) (Cadoudal{Fr}), who returntriumphant year on year, gain extra respect andadmiration. WhileQuevega remainedresolutely in the spotlighton the opening day witha record-breaking sixthOLBG Mares= Hurdle title,

the mighty Big Buck=s exited stage left on Thursday.

The exquisite dark brown gelding, now 11, couldmanage only a fifth-place finish behind More Of That(Ire) (Beneficial {Ire}) while attempting to notch a fifthvictory in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. Having beenabsent from the racecourse between December 2012and January 2014 while recovering from a tendoninjury, Big Buck=s did not return with the sparkle of old,but one thing which is not diminished is the adorationhe receives from the Cheltenham crowd. This time, hereturned, unusually for him, to the unsaddling enclosurerather than to the winner=s circle. His trainer PaulNicholls wisely decided instantly to call time on hisadmirable career and Big Buck=s, the winner of 23 of his40 races, was met by one of the loudest cheers of theweeks, not to mention a few moist eyes, as he wasbrought back in for one final lap of honor around theparade ring. Two personal favorites are Istabraq (Ire) (Sadler=sWells), the winner of the Royal & SunAlliance Novices=Hurdle and three Champion Hurdler for Aidan O=Brienbetween 1997 and 2000, while Best Mate (Ire) (UnDesperado {Fr}) was adored as much for being trainedby former school teacher Henrietta Knight inpartnership with her husband Terry Biddlecombe, as hewas for winning steeplechasing=s blue riband, theCheltenham Gold Cup, in three consecutive years.Along with Arkle, Golden Miller and Dawn Run, BestMate is immortalized in bronze at Prestbury Park. Hisstatue near the parade ring provided the venue forHenry Birtles, the >Racing Poet=, to recite his ode to BestMate ahead of the 10th anniversary of his final victoryat Cheltenham in 2004. Biddlecombe, three times thechampion jump jockey in the 1960s and a winner of theGold Cup himself aboard Woodland Venture in 1967,died in early January and he too was commemorated atthis year=s Festival with Tuesday=s National Hunt Chasebeing named in his honor.

Shining in a Different Sphere... Friday=s opening race, the JCB Triumph Hurdle forjuveniles, can always be relied upon to boast someinteresting pedigrees with many runners in the racehaving graduated from the flat. This year=s renewal wasno exception, with three sons of Montjeu (Ire) lining up,including Plinth (Ire),trained by Aidan O=Brienfor JP McManus, just asIstabraq once was.Another was Achtung(GB), a full brother toAuthorized (Ire), who washimself the sire of theGordon Elliott-trainedwinner Tiger Roll (Ire).Bought as an unraced3-year-old from Darleylast August, Tiger Roll=s half-brother Azheemah (Ire)(Dubawi {Ire}) has had more success for the operationas he won last season=s G2 Lonsdale Cup for Godolphinjust two weeks after his year-younger brother was soldat the DBS August Sale for ,10,000. Having won onhis hurdles debut in November, Tiger Roll wassubsequently offered for sale again, fetching ,80,000at Brightwells Sale at Cheltenham in December. The field also included two runners by Galileo (Ire),one of which, Ballyglasheen (Ire), is out of the GI Garden City Breeders= Cup H. winner Luas Line (Ire)(Danehill). Tiger Hill (Ire), whose progeny are often latematuring horses that benefit from a test of stamina, hasdone well with his National Hunt runners and he wasresponsible for Rutherglen (GB) and the smartly-bredBroughton (Ger). The latter is out of Group 2 winnerBoccassini (Ger) (Artan {Ire}) and is trained by SheikhMohammed=s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson, whosaddled ten runners at Cheltenham this week. While a current Darley stallion supplied the winner ofthe Triumph Hurdle, one who has just left its ranks,Shirocco (Ger), sired the second winner of the day, Lac

Fontana (Fr), who tookthe Vincent O=BrienCounty Hurdle, a Grade 3contest. Shirocco hassired plenty of decent Flatrunners but, as a son ofMonsun (Ger), he haslong been on the radar ofjumps breeders and isalso the sire ofThursday=s World Hurdlerunner-up Annie Power

(Ire), who started her racing career with Jim Bolgerbefore being transferred to the stable of Irish championjumps trainer Willie Mullins. Shirocco now stands inIreland at Glenview Stud, the jumping wing of theCashman family=s Rathbarry Stud, alongside Quevega=ssire Robin Des Champs (Fr) and former championNational Hunt sire Presenting (GB).

RAMSEY GOES INTERNATIONAL By Michael Illiano Last Saturday, leading North American owners andbreeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey turned their focusabroad and captured the $214,000 Sandy LaneBarbados Gold Cup with their 8-year-old gelding MajorMarvel (Bernstein), becoming the first American ownersto win the island=s premier race. Locally considered aGrade 1 event, the race does not generally attract muchinternational attention. But with the success theRamseys experienced domestically last year, they werelooking to expand their horizons.

ALast year, when we had such an outstanding year, winning the [Eclipse Award for Outstanding Owner],and [seeing homebred Kitten=s Joy named championsire], I was asked what do you wanna do for anencore,@ KenRamsey said.AAnd I said>Well, I wannatry to gointernational.=@ Ramsey saidthat he had hadhis sights seton the race fora while, butwas finallyspurred intoaction when abloodstockagent approached him representing a group fromBarbados who wanted to buy a Kitten=s Joy foal to runin the Barbados Gold Cup. AAnd I said, >I was thinking about winning it myself=,@Ramsey said. AI immediately called [trainer] Mike Maker, who is always game to go on some wild adventure thatI dream up, and we started to research what it wouldtake to win that race.@ Initially, Ramsey planned to enter a horse sired byKitten=s Joy, but he soon realized that the race calledfor a specific style of runner. The Garrison SavannahRacecourse, where the race is held, is shaped like arounded triangle, making the turns especially tight. If ahorse does not have the early speed to be one of theleaders going through the first turn, they will likely besqueezed out of contention. AWe settled on Major Marvel, who I claimed for$10,000 at Keeneland in 2012, and he=s the winningesthorse I have ever owned [with 14 wins],@ Ramsey said.AWe decided he had the early speed and the distancewas right, so he was the perfect choice.@ Cont. p11

Ramsey Goes International cont.

Ramsey targeted Patrick Husbands, who was bornand raised in Barbados and had already won theBarbados Gold Cup three times, to pilot Major Marvel, who Husbands had ridden before. Husbands was stillrecovering from a broken leg he had suffered in the Fall, but was determined to ride in the Gold Cup. AI wanted Patrick Husbands to ride for us, the onlything was he had broken his leg in three places last fall.Ramsey said. AHe showed me his leg and it didn=t haveany fat on it at all and you could see two screwssticking out.@ In order to ride for Ramsey, Husbands not only had togrit through his injury, but had to negotiate his way outof a prior commitment. Initially, Husbands wascommitted to ride for Barbados real estate magnate SirCharles Williams in the Gold Cup. Husbands asked SirWilliams to let him off to ride Major Marvel in the GoldCup, and in return he promised to ride for Williams inthe two other Grade 1 races that day. Husbands piloted Major Marvel to meet the course=sdemands, tracking the pacesetter from second throughthe tight early turn and opening up in the far turn tocruise to a 3 1/2-length victory. With the victory,Husbands is tied for the most wins in the BarbadosGold Cup with four. Husbands went on to make historyagain that day, rewarding Sir Williams for letting himjump to Major Marvel by winning both of the otherGrade 1 events that day, making Husbands the firstjockey in the history of the event to win all three Grade 1 races on Gold Cup Day. Ramsey creditedHusbands for both the success in the race itself, andthe enthusiastic response that followed. APart of what made the win so popular was thatPatrick Husbands rode the horse,@ Ramsey said. AHe=sthe local herodown there andhe came downon crutchesand still cameout with awin.@ After therace, Ramseyparaded MajorMarvel past thegrandstandwith Husbandsstill aboard, asis the race=stradition, to a standing ovation. AMe and [local trainer] Jonathan Simpson, who I haveto give a lot of credit to, walked the horse probably thelength of a football field, and we had people on bothsides of us cheering and waving,@ Ramsey said. Ramsey wanted to share the win with the generalpopulation, so after he left the winner=s circle, he tookthe trophy to the Garrison Savannah Members= Club, where it had never been before. He bought five bottlesof champagne to fill the trophy with, and racing fanscame by to take pictures and drink from the Gold Cup.

AI probably took 500 pictures with people and thefans drank every drop of champagne,@ Ramsey said.AThis was probably the most fun I=ve ever had at aracetrack.@ The next day, a local trainer who also served as apolo announcer convinced Ramsey to take the trophy toa polo match between Cheshire and Barbados. Ramseyentered with the trophy to another standing ovationand was rewarded with another honor. The British HighCommissioner was on hand to roll out the ball to startthe polo match, the equivalent of throwing out the firstpitch at a baseball game, but when Ramsey showed up,track officials insisted he throw out the ball. AI don=t know much about polo, so I needed somedirection, but the response was amazing,@ Ramsey said.AI felt like a local celebrity.@ Local horsemen were enthusiastic about Ramsey=svisit as well. AThere were 10 other horses in that race, and I metevery single owner,@ Ramsey said. AI think I got dozensof business cards and people asking me to come back.So it was a business trip, too.@ Ramsey has been invited back for the Barbados GoldCup next year and hopes to repeat his success with ahorse by Kitten=s Joy. He is continuing to raise hisinternational profile, with plans for Sheikh Mohammad=s to breed seven of his mares to Kitten=s Joy this year, and potentially follow up on the interest in the stallionhis trip to Barbados generated. AWe=re trying to make our stallion a world class sire,@Ramsey said. AAnd we=re always keeping our eye outfor international races. Any place they race horses,we=re willing to travel.@ Click here to share this story

STEVE SHERACK: Last Week: Didn’t get much of a run from either of

my longshot picks last weekend. Took a major shot in the dark on

Recanted in the San Felipe, and he certainly ran to his 47-1 odds,

finishing a distant sixth. Had much higher hopes for East Hall in the

Tampa Bay Derby, but he just never got involved in any point of the race

as well, and reported home a disappointing eighth at 11-1 behind the

very impressive upset winner Ring Weekend... Congrats to Terry

Finley’s West Point Thoroughbreds and St. Elias Stable on a job well

done--best of luck down the Derby trail.

GII Rebel S. - Really loved the lightly raced Hoppertunity in last

month’s Risen Star (click here for my Showdown analysis), and after

some initial disappointment following his well-beaten fourth that day, I’ve

really grown to appreciate that effort much more with a couple of

additional viewings. The half-brother to MGISW Executiveprivilege fell a

little too far behind for his own good beneath Martin Garcia, got hung

very wide on the turn for home, and came alive way too late when

guided toward the inside in deep stretch to finish within seven lengths of

Intense Holiday. The $300K KEESEP graduate gets a very favorable

rider change to Mike Smith, and should be sitting much closer to the

leaders this time around in a smaller field with less early speed. Hall of

Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s recent success with Oaklawn shippers is

well-documented, and this guy seems to have come out of his latest

educational effort in fine form, posting a smart four-furlong drill in :47 2/5

Mar. 6 and a five-furlong breeze in 1:00 1/5 Mar. 11, both at Santa

Anita. There’s still plenty of room for improvement, and he should be

every bit of his generous morning-line quote of 10-1 here against

impressive Southwest winner Tapiture, BC Juvenile runner-up Strong

Mandate, and the highly regarded Kobe’s Back.

Selection: Hoppertunity (10-1).

BRIAN DIDONATO: Last Week: What can you say? This hasn’t beenpretty so far. Schoolofhardrocks looked at one point like he was goingto have a say in the outcome of the San Felipe after sitting a perfect trip, but he faded in the lane and then (of course) got run down for third. I stillthink he has a future, but it’ll probably be on grass. In the Tampa BayDerby, meanwhile, Matador was farther back than I would’ve expectedand could only manage a fifth behind front-running longshot RingWeekend. Hope people have been fading my selections in this contestso far, but it has to turn around at some point, right? Right?

GII Rebel S. - This race is pretty intriguing. You’ve got the top threefrom the Feb. 17 GIII Risen Star S., plus visually impressive GII SanVicente S. hero Kobe’s Back shipping in from California. I’m playingagainst all of them. Risen Star winner Tapiture was pretty dominant lasttime, but could he have sat a better trip? He saved all the ground whilerunner-up Strong Mandate and third finisher Ride On Curlin were bothhung extremely wide. My problem with those two is that they bothalways seem to come up a spot or two short or have some excuse. It’snot like Strong Mandate will be any kind of price anyway, but I supposeI’ll toss Ride On Curlin in somewhere in case he ever returns to his GI Champagne S. performance from last year. I’m also not sold onKobe’s Back in a route--he’s got talent for sure, but has “deep-closingsprinter” written all over him. That leaves me with two options:Hoppertunity and Street Strategy. I think the latter might need a bitmore seasoning (I’d like to see him run well, but not too well, and thenplay him in the GI Arkansas Derby), so I’ll go with Hoppertunity. Imentioned him before the GII Risen Star S. as a horse I thought had achance, but ultimately didn’t pick him because of the easy trip he gotwhen breaking his maiden. He had a less advantageous trip last time, however, and was going well late to be fourth. I expect him to be incontention earlier this time, and find Bob Baffert’s record at Oaklawn toostrong to ignore. In the past four seasons, he’s won four GIII Southwests, three GIII Rebels (with a third-place finish last year),and one GI Arkansas Derby (while also completing the exacta).Selection: Hoppertunity (10-1).
