American Songbook I Meet the Artists

Barbara Cook’s silvery soprano, purity of tone, and warm presence havedelighted audiences around the world for more than 50 years. A 2011Kennedy Center honoree, Ms. Cook’s most recent notable appearancesinclude her celebratory 85th birthday concert at Carnegie Hall, a TonyAward–nominated performance in the musical Sondheim on Sondheim,and a series of critically acclaimed concerts at New York’s Café Carlyle,Feinstein’s at the Regency, and 54 Below. In 2006 she became the firstfemale non-classical singer to be presented in solo concert by theMetropolitan Opera.

A leading star of the Broadway stage during the ’50s and ’60s, Ms. Cook’smany credits include the creation of three classic roles in the Americanmusical theater: Cunegonde in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, Marian theLibrarian in Meredith Willson’s The Music Man (Tony Award), and Amaliain Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s She Loves Me (Drama Desk Award).

Ms. Cook’s Carnegie Hall debut in 1975 was preserved as a live recording,Barbara Cook at Carnegie Hall. She then embarked on a second career asa concert and recording artist, performing in most of the country’s majorconcert halls and cabarets. In 1987 she won a Drama Desk Award for herBroadway show, A Concert for the Theatre.

Ms. Cook’s many London appearances include her 1997 gala birthday con-cert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall, appear-ances with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican, engagementsat Donmar Warehouse and Sadler’s Wells, and Olivier Award–nominatedappearances at the Albery Theatre, at the Lyric Theatre with MostlySondheim, two engagements of Barbara Cook’s Broadway! and an appear-ance with the English National Ballet in an all-Gershwin evening at RoyalAlbert Hall. A Grammy Award winner, Ms. Cook’s latest CD is Loverman,based on her critically acclaimed concert Let’s Fall in Love.

Lee Musiker

Lee Musiker (musical director and piano) is a pianist, conductor, music direc-tor, arranger, and orchestrator. He has performed with the New YorkPhilharmonic and its Principal Brass Quintet, the New York City Ballet,American Ballet Theatre, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the New York andBoston Pops, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Musiker has guest conducted the New York Philharmonic along with theorchestras of Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston,Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. For the 2014–15 season he ismusic director and principal conductor of the Palm Beach Pops. Other con-ducting credits include the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; the Count Basie,Duke Ellington, and Henry Mancini Institute orchestras; and the Jerry Lewistelethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Mr. Musiker has worked with a wide range of artists including Tony Bennett,Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Kristin Chenoweth, Natalie Cole, Judy Collins,Barbara Cook, Lady Gaga, Joel Grey, Josh Groban, Jewel, Chaka Khan, DianaKrall, John Mayer, Audra McDonald, Maureen McGovern, Mandy Patinkin, andJames Taylor. He has also worked with Kathleen Battle, Renée Fleming,Susan Graham, Denyce Graves, Marilyn Horne, Sylvia McNair, Dawn Upshaw,and Deborah Voigt. Other collaborators include Joshua Bell, Chris Botti,Marvin Hamlisch, Wynton Marsalis, and Bob Mintzer.

From 2001–13 Mr. Musiker toured and recorded with Tony Bennett and wasmusic director/pianist for his multiple Grammy and Emmy Award–winning albumand TV special Duets: An American Classic and its sequel Duets II. Mr. Musikerhas received both Grammy and Emmy Awards, and is a Steinway Artist.

Dave Riekenberg

Dave Riekenberg (saxophone, woodwinds) is a freelance musician based inNew York City. He graduated from North Texas State University with a bache-lor’s degree in music theory and a master’s degree in music education.Afterward he toured for several years with Woody Herman and theThundering Herd. While a member of the herd, Mr. Riekenberg was a featuredsoloist, playing alongside guest artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Al Cohn, andBuddy Tate. He also soloed behind guest vocalists, including Nancy Wilson,Billy Eckstine, Rosemary Clooney, and Joe Williams. He later moved to NewYork and joined the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, featuring David Clayton-Thomas, an association that lasted more than eight years. In the jazz world Mr.Riekenberg has recorded and/or concertized with musicians such as JimmyCobb, Peter Erskine, Christian McBride, Walter Booker, Larry Willis, and therhythm section that backs up Barbara Cook. He has appeared with many ofthe notable big bands in New York, including the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra andthe Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra. He has been a member of the DaveLiebman Big Band since its inception in 1999. On Broadway Mr. Riekenberg

has played in the orchestras of Chicago, Hairspray, and The Adventures ofPriscilla, Queen of the Desert, among others. He is currently a member of theorchestra of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. He is also on the jazz facultyat Lehigh University.

Jay Leonhart

Jay Leonhart (bass) has enjoyed accompanying many of the legendary singersand musicians of the last 60 years, including Barbara Cook. He attended JohnsHopkins University and has appeared on Today with Dave Garroway and onDavid Letterman’s show.

Warren Odze

Warren Odze (percussion) has been involved in the business of making musicfor the past 40 years. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, andhas since recorded and performed with artists such as Judy Collins, PeterAllen, Barbara Cook, Hank Jones, Johnny Hartman, Audra McDonald, KennyRankin, Phoebe Snow, Art Garfunkel, and Rod Stewart. Mr. Odze was thedrummer for the 1986 season of The Dick Cavett Show, for the Tony Awards,and for the National Memorial Day Concert and A Capital Fourth with theNational Symphony Orchestra on PBS. His Broadway credits as drummerinclude The Life, The Civil War, Kat and the Kings, Seussical, ThoroughlyModern Millie, Lennon, Come Fly Away, The Wedding Singer, and Rocky.

American Songbook

In 1998, Lincoln Center launched American Songbook, dedicated to the cele-bration of popular American song. Designed to highlight and affirm the cre-ative mastery of America’s songwriters from their emergence at the turn ofthe 19th century up through the present, American Songbook spans all stylesand genres, from the form’s early roots in Tin Pan Alley and Broadway to theeclecticism of today’s singer-songwriters. American Songbook also show-cases the outstanding interpreters of popular song, including establishedand emerging concert, cabaret, theater, and songwriter performers.

Matt Berman

Matt Berman is the resident lighting designer for Lincoln Center’s AmericanSongbook. He continues his design work for Kristin Chenoweth, LizaMinnelli, Kaye Ballard, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Salonga, and Elaine Paigeon the road. Through his work with the American Society of Composers,Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and several U.S.-based charities, Mr.Berman has designed for a starry roster that includes Bernadette Peters,Barbra Streisand, Reba McEntire, Melissa Errico, Deborah Voigt, MichaelUrie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie, Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, and Sting. His inter-national touring schedule has allowed him to design for iconic venues suchas Royal Albert Hall, the Paris Opera, the Olympia Theater in Paris, RoyalCarré Theater in Amsterdam, the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, the Acropolis,the Taormina Amphitheater in Sicily, Luna Park in Buenos Aires, the SydneyOpera House, and, closer to home, the Hollywood Bowl, Alice Tully Hall, andCarnegie Hall. His Broadway credits include A Free Man of Color,The Rivals, Contact (also in London and Tokyo), Marie Christine, TwelfthNight, and Jekyll & Hyde. Off-Broadway Mr. Stauffer has worked onHereafter, A Minister’s Wife, Bernarda Alba, Third, Belle Epoque, Big Bill,Elegies, Hello Again, The Spitfire Grill, Pageant, and Hedwig and the AngryInch. His regional credits include productions at the Hanger Theatre,Berkshire Theatre Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, and Alley Theatre.As a sound engineer, Mr. Stauffer has worked on The Lion King, Juan Darién,Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Carousel, Once on This Island, and Little Shopof Horrors (Off-Broadway).

Through composers like ErnestoLecuona, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Rafael Hernandez,and Chucho Valdés (with whom D’Rivera workedwith as a member of his ensemble Irakere in the1970s), D’Rivera will delve into South Americanmusical styles as sources for the enrichment of con-temporary jazz music. A founding member ofGillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, D’Rivera is alsoan 11-time Grammy Award winner, NEA Jazz Master,and Carnegie Hall Lifetime Achievement Awardrecipient.
