A brand-new contest makes its premier on the NABC schedule today: the NABC+ Mixed Swiss Teams. The event, which will qualify winners for Grand Life Master, pays platinum points for overall placements. It’s a two-day affair consisting of two qualifying sessions and two final sessions.

like a contented married couple: single in partnership, yet strong, distinct individuals; they finish each other’s sentences, but only when they get excited; and with just a look, they share decades of memories. Most palpably, they like each other.

A little dummydiscomfortBy Alan Kudisch

This deal comes from the second qualifying session of the Nail Life Master Pairs.

Dlr: North ♠ A J 4 3 Vul: None ♥ Q J 10 8 ♦ K 10 8 ♣ 9 2 ♠ K 10 ♠ 9 8 7 5 2 ♥ 9 7 4 2 ♥ K 6 3 ♦ Q 5 3 ♦ A 6 4 ♣ A K Q J ♣ 7 5 ♠ Q 6 ♥ A 5 ♦ J 9 7 2 ♣ 10 8 6 4 3

West North East South Kudisch Schuld 1♦ Pass 1NT All Pass

The opening lead was the ♣K (count). West cashed the top three clubs. North let go of a spade and East, playing upside-down count and attitude, pitched the ♠7.

At trick four, West switched to a diamond: 3, 8, 6, overtaken by declarer with the 9.

Declarer played the ♥A and exited with the ♥5. East won the king and played back a third heart to dummy as South discarded a club.

Declarer cashed the last heart – East pitched a spade, South his last club –- then led a low spade from dummy to his queen, won by West’s king to reach this ending: ♠ A J ♥ — ♦ K 10 ♣ — ♠ 10 ♠ 9 8 ♥ — ♥ — ♦ Q 5 ♦ A 4 ♣ J ♣ — ♠ 6 ♥ — ♦ J 7 2 ♣ —

When West cashed the ♣J, dummy was squeezed. If he pitches a diamond, East–West cash two diamonds. If dummy pitches a spade, West exits a spade, forcing the North hand to play away from the ♦K 10.

The result was 1NT by South, down two. Plus 100 was worth 89% of the matchpoints.

Masterpoint disclaimerResults reported in the Daily Bulletin are subject

to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

Congratulations to Arlene Tauber from Atlanta GA, who earned her gold card on Thursday playing in the Gold Rush Pairs. Her partner was Kem Morgan of Atlanta. She needed 1.24 gold, and earned 1.53 points. Arlene, incidentally, is a big force behind the Bridge Club of Atlanta’s huge success on The Longest Day.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSPlan for improvement

By Brent ManleyA few years ago, Jane Bruno of Redmond

WA was running a game for newcomers in which players were allowed to ask for guidance. During the play, Bruno was called to a table with three Pass cards showing. The player in fourth seat needed help. After a peek at the player’s weak hand, Bruno and asked what she wanted to do. Player: “I want to pass.” Bruno: “So what’s the problem?” Player, in all seriousness: “I didn’t know I was allowed to.”

I played party bridge for a couple of years before I discovered duplicate, and there was no going back. Among the many facets of duplicate that attracted me was the opportunity to chart my progress by reviewing each game.

In Memphis, my wife and I played in the newcomer game for a while before being told we had to start playing in the open game. It was tough because there were many really good players. We didn’t like coming in last all the time, and we may not have realized it then, but taking our lumps was good for our game. When we finally came in next to last, it felt like we had won the Blue Ribbon Pairs.

What all this is leading up to is a few tips for improving your game.

There’s no question that bridge can be difficult. If it was easy, who would want to play? That said, you don’t have to be an expert or world champion to enjoy duplicate. It’s a fascinating exercise for your brain, and it’s a lot of fun when you execute your first endplay or make a doubled contract – or double the experts and get them for 800. If you play long enough, there will be many highlights.

From the moment I discovered bridge, I spent a lot of time reading. There are dozens of

wonderful books out there that will help you learn basics – very important – and expose you to more advanced plays so you will recognize opportunities for them at the table.

My two favorite authors are Mike Lawrence and Eddie Kantar. I read and re-read their books, learning something new each time. I found them so valuable because of the way they explain things and help prepare you for live action.

At some time in your bridge career – sooner rather than later – I hope you get a copy of “How to Read Your Opponents’ Cards,” by Lawrence. In my view, it belongs in the top 10 of the best bridge books of all time. Kantar has some wonderful books on card play and defense. Be a student of the game. Read.

Here’s another tip: Play up.I’m not saying you should rush out to a

regional and sign up for the Flight A pairs or buy entries in the toughest national events at a tournament like this one. It’s important to play in games with your peers, but it will speed up your development if you seek tougher competition, even if it’s just once a month.

You might also take time occasionally to watch an expert pair playing a session. Most are happy to explain their decision-making process and plays if you have questions after the game.

Many experienced players are happy to help you understand the game more fully and will answer your questions about bidding and card play.

At the bridge club in Memphis, I have a semi-regular date with a player who really wants to improve and has the potential to reach her goal. There are others at the club who mentor aspiring players.

If you love the game as much as I do and steadily improve, one day you will be in a position to mentor someone who strives to play better. I hope you will remember what the game was like for you in the early stages. If so, you will be happy, as I am, to give back.

Take all your chances at bridge - 9By Eddie Kantar

♠ J 10 ♥ A J 6 4 ♦ A K 6 5 ♣ K 7 5

♠ K 8 ♥ K Q 10 9 8 2 ♦ Q ♣ 8 4 3 2

You have a simple auction. You open 2♥, weak, partner says 4♥, and West leads a prompt ♦J. Plan the play.

SolutionYou have a 100% play for the contract, yet

someone with thousands of masterpoints had a blind spot and went down!

To ensure 10 tricks after winning the ♦Q, draw trumps ending in dummy and discard two spades on the top diamonds and eventually lead up the ♣K. The most you can lose is three club tricks (you can ruff the fourth club in dummy if necessary).

The player with the bushel basket of masterpoints

discarded two clubs on the diamonds thinking he still had two finesses left in the black suits and only needed one to succeed. But why give yourself a 75% chance when a 100% chance is available? Declarer had a hard time living this one down. The full deal: ♠ J 10 ♥ A J 6 4 ♦ A K 6 5 ♣ K 7 5 ♠ A Q 9 5 ♠ 7 6 4 3 2 ♥ 7 5 ♥ 3 ♦ J 10 9 2 ♦ 8 7 4 3 ♣ Q 10 9 ♣ A J 6 ♠ K 8 ♥ K Q 10 9 8 2 ♦ Q ♣ 8 4 3 2

Notice that if West had found a club lead, the defense could take the first five tricks! It has been said that if an average plus player made the winning lead on every board, he would be a world champion without a shadow of a doubt.

Meet Intermediate-Newcomer Co-Chairs Cal and Flo Newlin.

Shed your tearsBy Barry Rigal

Consider the problem West faces on this deal from the first final session of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs. Dlr: North ♠ Q J Vul: Both ♥ J 9 7 6 4 3 ♦ Q 9 ♣ 9 7 3 ♠ 10 3 ♥ Q 5 ♦ A K J 10 8 6 5 ♣ Q 6 West North East South Pass Pass 2NT (1) Pass 4♦ (2) Pass 4♥ All Pass

(1) Ostensibly 20-21(2) TransferTwo rounds of diamonds stand up. Now what?

South is known to have all the missing high cards except for the ♣J. How can the defense emerge with any extra tricks? Answer: If East has the ♥10 x x, a third diamond allows him to ruff with the trump 10 and promote a trump trick for the defenders via the uppercut.

Doesn’t that seem like a good idea? Not when you see the full deal: ♠ Q J ♥ J 9 7 6 4 3 ♦ Q 9 ♣ 9 7 3 ♠ 10 3 ♠ 9 8 7 6 4 2 ♥ Q 5 ♥ K 8 2 ♦ A K J 10 8 6 5 ♦ 4 2 ♣ Q 6 ♣ J 2 ♠ A K 5 ♥ A 10 ♦ 7 3 ♣ A K 10 8 5 4

When East overruffs the ♥7 with the 8 (imagining declarer will follow suit), two defensive trump tricks turn into one.

You might not approve of the 2NT opener, but Kerry Kappell would tell you it certainly got the job done!

A true bridge winnerBy Barry Rigal

Oscar winner Greg Humphreys is not just a code-making monkey par excellence. He can also play the cards, as witness this deal from a knockout teams. He was playing with Ida Groenkvist. Humphreys was at the helm in 3NT on this deal. Dlr: West ♠ A J 9 8 2 Vul: N-S ♥ J 6 4 ♦ J 5 ♣ J 6 5

♠ Q 10 ♥ A Q 9 7 ♦ A K 5 ♣ Q 7 4 2 West North East South Pass Pass 1♥ 1NT Pass 2♣ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 3NT All Pass

West led the ♣3, Humphreys played low from dummy and when East played the 9, Humphrey let it hold. East was immediately endplayed. He exited with a diamond to dummy’s jack. Humphreys now ran the ♥J, covered by the king and ace. Humphreys then led the ♠10 to the ace, repeated the heart finesse and led a club towards dummy’s jack to build his ninth trick from clubs.

Note how well he had done not to believe the fourth-highest lead by winning the ♣Q and returning the suit. While one can survive taking the ♣Q at trick one, Humphreys’ plan was more elegant.

McDevitt, Brookline, and Margie Sullivan, Sagamore Beach. They were in first before the final board was played.

The victory was the first ACBL national pairs championship for Goldberg, who lives in Merion Station PA. Her previous North American titles came in what is now the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams in 1997 and the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams in 1999.

Eisenberg, a five-time world champion now with 15 North American titles, earned his second pairs title. He and Bobby Goldman won the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs in 1968. Eisenberg lives in Perris CA.

Goldberg and Eisenberg have been playing together close to a decade. Before becoming her partner, Eisenberg was coaching Goldberg and a former partner, Wafik Abdou. The two won the World Bridge Productions Open Pairs, part of the Cavendish Invitational Pairs tournament in 2006.

Electronic Device Policy1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs

allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the

exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

Two bad optionsBy Barry Rigal

Partners are supposed to protect each other, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way. Check out this deal from the second semifinal session of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs. You will see that one player was forced to do his partner in. Steve Beatty was North, Tom Carmichael South. Dlr: South ♠ 10 9 6 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ 5 ♦ A 9 6 5 ♣ A 9 6 ♠ A ♠ K J 5 2 ♥ 10 8 6 ♥ Q 7 ♦ K J 10 8 3 2 ♦ — ♣ 10 5 4 ♣ K Q J 8 7 3 2 ♠ Q 8 7 ♥ A K J 9 4 3 2 ♦ Q 7 4 ♣ — West North East South 1♥ 2♦ Dbl Pass 3♥ Pass 3NT Pass 4♥ All Pass

The defenders didn’t find their crossruff. West led a club to the ace, Carmichael pitching a spade. He led a heart to the jack and played two more rounds of the suit. Now Carmichael exited with the ♠Q to West’s ace. Carmichael ruffed the club return and passed the ♠8 to East. This was the ending. ♠ 10 9 6 ♥ — ♦ A 9 6 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ K 5 ♥ — ♥ — ♦ K J 10 8 3 ♦ — ♣ 10 ♣ Q J 8 7 ♠ — ♥ 9 4 3 ♦ Q 7 4 ♣ —

East could not lead a spade without setting up two tricks for declarer, so he played a club honor, stripping West of his exit card.

Carmichael ruffed the club and played a low diamond from hand, ducking when West contributed the 10. West now had to lead the suit around to declarer’s ♦Q. Ten tricks made.

False hopeBy Barry Rigal

If you open the East hand on this deal from the second final session of the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, you will find it very difficult. Dlr: North ♠ 6 5 Vul: None ♥ Q 10 ♦ Q 7 6 3 ♣ A J 5 3 2 ♠ 7 4 3 2 ♠ A J 9 8 ♥ A K 8 5 ♥ 9 6 ♦ A 9 8 ♦ K 6 4 ♣ Q 9 ♣ K 6 4 ♠ K Q 10 ♥ J 7 4 3 2 ♦ J 10 ♣ 10 8 7

For the record, about one-third of the field managed to stop in 3♠. Two North-South pairs actually managed to let through 4♠, perhaps cashing the ♣A prematurely?

Rob Brady was one of the many East’s in 4♠on a club lead. He put up the queen and John Kranyak won the ace to return the ♣J. Brady won and crossed to a top heart to lead a spade to the 9. Had this lost to the 10, he would have cashed the ♠A and switched to a crossruff for down one.

But Vince Demuy to the ♠9 with the queen to exit with the ♦J, and now when Brady repeated the trump finesse, Demuy could win and hold declarer to eight tricks.

Kirby Burkert1945 – 2015

Kirby Burkert, well-known local player who had planned to play in the Fall NABC, died on Sunday after a brief illness. The resident of Centennial, a Denver suburb, was 70.

One of the best things about tournament bridge is that you have the opportunity to play against true experts, even world champions on occasion. Better still, on rare occasions even less-experienced players can come out on top.

That happened in the Saturday-Sunday Bracketed Knockout Teams, where the team captained by Jason Larrivee – with a total masterpoint holding of about 5500 – met the Robert Porter squad, owners of more than 10 times the masterpoints of their opponents.

The Larrivee team survived two round-robins to get to the semifinal round, shrugging off a 16-IMP loss on the first board of one of the matches, to get to the final against the team that included longtime pro Ken Gee. The Larrivee team won by 12 IMPs.

“It was a blast,” said Jeremy Lewis, familiar to tournament goers as a bookseller at dozens of tournaments east of the Mississippi. Lewis, with roughly 600 masterpoints, played on the winning team with Holly Campbell (about 250 MPs), who has been helping him sell books and haul them from tournament to tournament while also working at her own business making digital signs. Larrivee’s partner was Lawrence Diamond, author of a new book, “Mastering Hand Evaluation.”

Of Lewis’s masterpoints, 300 are gold, but he is not a Life Master because he has almost no black

or silver masterpoints. With the busy schedule, neither he nor Campbell has time to play at clubs or sectionals.

In one of their matches on the way to victory, they cut it close, nearly getting a penalty for being late after taking one of ACBL’s Teacher Accreditation Program courses and rushing to put away the jewelry they’ve been selling at their booth in the Sheraton.

“We were sliding into the knockouts like our hair was on fire,” said Campbell.

The Larrivee team was blessed with some luck, avoiding the Gee team until the final and hitting a couple of proverbial homers when they needed to.

In the semifinal round, the team trailed by 23 IMPs when Lewis, in second seat, opened a four-card heart suit, catching Campbell with a 20-point hand. She drove it to 7♥ and left her partner to make it despite a 4-1 trump split. These were the two hands:

♠ A K 6 ♥ A 7 6 3 ♦ 10 4 ♣ A K Q 9

♠ Q 8 7 2 ♥ K Q J 10 ♦ A 3 ♣ 7 6 2

Lewis got the lead of the ♣J against his grand slam. He won in dummy and began pulling trumps. When West discarded a club on the second round of trumps, Lewis was in a bind. With a normal trump break and a 3-3 spade split, he could discard a diamond from dummy on the ♠Q and ruff a diamond for his 13th trick. The bad trump break meant he needed another plan.

Considering West’s first discard, he decided the opening lead had not been from J-10-x-(x), so playing a club to the 9 was scrapped.

Lewis pulled trumps and tested spades, which broke 3-3. East, who had started with 3=4=2=4 shape, including the ♣10 and ♦K Q, felt the pressure when Lewis cashed the ♠Q, pitching a diamond from dummy. Instead of letting go one of her diamonds, she pitched a club. The ♣9 was the 13th trick for Lewis.

On another deal, Lewis overcalled 1NT with 19 high-card points, not liking to double with what he thought was inadequate support for the majors. Campbell blew into 4♥ with a seven-card suit despite having only 4 HCP. The opponents’ 4♠ save produced plus 800 for Lewis and Campbell and another big gain.

The odds were heavily against them, but Lewis and Campbell said they didn’t really think about that until the final scores were entered. Said Campbell, “There was no time to worry about who the opponents were.”

many years I was always getting asked, ‘So when are you going to finish med school?’”

Memorial Day, 1980Palmer and Deas credit Cole and Smith for

bringing them together. Their first game as partners was at the 1980 Memorial Day regional in Norfolk.

Though they didn’t win right off the bat, they did mesh. Palmer says, “We knew we wanted to play together. We’re the same age, we had the same friends and we wanted to play the same light-opening, Eastern Scientific methods.” When they got down to work, they put together an effective big club system. Their first NABC together was in 1981 in Miami.

Although they were not partners, their first win (a tie for the top spot) – came in the Mixed Board-a-Match in 1982. Palmer played with Cole, Deas with Norb Kremer. Though the pair had never won an NABC, they were asked to represent North America as fill-ins at the World Championships in Biarritz, France when Canadian great Francine Cimon and her partner were unable to attend.

“Of course we had no qualifying points,” says Palmer. “Francine and her partner gave us their airline tickets (this was back in the day when you could transfer tickets) and they gave us their hotel.”

Deas remembers it rained every day. Their hotel was three blocks from the playing site.

“We had no money,” says Palmer. Here we were – nobody – nobody knew us. And we won the silver medal in the Women’s Pairs.” Betty Ann Kennedy and Carol Sanders, who were also a replacement pair, won the gold medal in the event.

In 1983, they won their first NABC title – the Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs. “It’s true,” says Deas. “We won a world championship silver medal before we won an NABC.”

The “nobodies” would go on to win Venice Cup titles in 1987 and 1989, the McConnell Cup in 2002 in Montreal and the World Women’s Pairs in Philadelphia in 2010. Deas also won a Venice Cup title in 1991 in Yokohama and the Women’s World Team Olympiad in1996 in Rhodes, Greece. In 2011, Deas and Palmer won both the women’s teams and the women’s pairs at the first Sportaccord World Mind Games in Beijing, China.

Says Palmer, “We’ve finished one, two, three, four and six in the World Women’s Pairs.”

Vugraph audiencesPalmer’s mother enjoyed watching her daughter

online competing at the world championships. Palmer and Deas were on vugraph from Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2009.

“I opened 2NT, Lynn bid 3♣, I bid 3♦,” says Palmer, “and that’s as far as the vugraph auction went. We actually went on to bid 3NT. My mother, like the vugraph audience, didn’t see the 3NT bid. She let me know, ‘I would have bid a little more on that hand.’”

Like Palmer’s mother, Deas’s mother watched her daughter play online. On one deal in world championship play, Deas and Palmer took a profitable high-level sacrifice.

“I’m never to going to watch you again,” Deas’s mother informed her daughter. “You stole their hand!”

In sickness and in healthDeas was hospitalized in December 1996, and

she wasn’t released until the following May. It was then she learned she suffered from myasthenia gravis and muscular dystrophy. Myasthenia gravis is characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of voluntary muscles. The doctor who was finally able to diagnose her illness was a bridge player, and delighted in bringing hands to Deas at the end of his work day for her evaluation and critique.

“I was supposed to be getting ready for the trials for the world championships in Tunisia,” Deas says. “And here I am – seven months in the hospital, not playing a card.”

The team made qualifying as easy as possible on Deas. She recalls her flight to Tunisia. “I took my medicine and started choking. That’s one of the effects of my illness. The airline stewards called out, ‘Is there a doctor on the plane?’ The whole plane stood up. It turned out there was a medical conference just about to start in Tunisia.”

Deas says her health issues require her partners to put up with the good and bad. Palmer says that for the past 10 years, Deas has been incredibly healthy, and that her illness has not affected her bridge play.

The two just returned from the World Championships in Chennai, India with a silver medal. They qualified as part of the team captained by Silvia Moss. Moss, because of health issues, was unable

continued from page 1

Deas and Palmer

to make the trip to India. “But she supported us the whole way,” says Palmer.

The squad – Deas and Palmer plus Juanita Chambers, Joann Glasson, Janice Seamon-Molson, Tobi Sokolow – lost in a close match, by 8 IMPs to France.

On the domestic front, Deas and Palmer have 19 NABC titles playing together either as partners or as teammates in mixed events. All told, Deas owns 25 NABC titles and Palmer 27.

Deas is married to bridge player Rich Kasprowicz. They breed dogs. “Rich is home right now with our 14 dogs,” Deas says.

Palmer, an administrative judge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, is married to bridge professional Bill Pettis. Pettis has been instrumental working with Deas and Palmer on their system according to the women.

Pettis and Palmer have a daughter – 20-year-old Julie – who is studying early childhood education at Bucknell.

“Julie went to her first nationals in New Orleans when she was five weeks old,” Palmer said. “She grew up in the child care program run by Donna Compton, with Donna’s daughter, Morgan. Then they worked in it and then they ran it.”

Through her mother’s international competition, Julie has been able to travel around the world. Deas nods, “That’s one of the greatest things about bridge.”

So, here you are enjoying the challenge of bridge in Denver CO. Every morning when you leave your hotel to go to the games, maybe your eyes look west and take in the mountain ridges in the distance. Do you wonder what other bridge challenges could be waiting for you up there?

There are many opportunities for bridge in the mountains, and the landscape around these games is truly spectacular. If you decide to explore bridge in the mountains, get to know Colorado West at www.Unit364.org. All of our clubs are ACBL-sanctioned and open to visitors. They will give you a warm welcome. Let me take you on a brief tour.

About 100 miles west from Denver on Interstate 70 (as you come to the 11,000-foot summit of Vail Pass), you will enter Colorado West territory. In addition to world-class skiing, Vail is home to two bridge clubs: the Vail Valley Bridge Club and the Vail Area Bridge Games.

From there, voyage 100 miles further westward on the highway and you’ll find the club in Grand Junction. You can also turn south down I-70 toward Aspen and find the “El Je Bridge” club in Basalt and the Colorado Mountain College bridge club in Aspen.

Highway 133 from the Aspen area will take you over the beautiful McClure Pass (8755 feet), ending in the towns of Delta and Montrose, where games at two more bridge clubs is waiting! In Montrose, take the opportunity to drive up to the edge of the Black Canyon – a crevasse in the black volcanic rock 2000 feet above the Gunnison River. From there, travel south on State Highway 550, exploring bridge games in the ski towns of Telluride and Crested Butte.

Your adventure continues south to your final bridge game in Durango. Drive through the town of Ouray and over Red Mountain Pass (11,018 ft – no roadside guardrail, so don’t look down) to the National Historical District of Silverton. Much of the town still has unpaved streets and is a delight to explore. Further, past a ski area called “Purgatory” (I kid you not!), you will find the Durango Bridge Club in the town’s senior center.

Bridge in Western Colorado is waiting for you with a warm welcome.

All the best and may all your finesses win.
