Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club visited the Vadoulis Garden Centre for their recent meeting when Milton Vadoulis gave us some very useful hints how to get the best out of our gardens. Plants are a bit like houses as the main point is location for most plants eg camellias like morning sun, afternoon shade acid soil keep moist - not wet. Cyclamens also like shady areas outside, use liquid feed but don't over do, and remove some leaves (inner) to get more flowers. Three main ways to feed your plants liquid feed, pellet type about every 5-6 weeks, or slow release fertilizer about twice a year. Milton also showed us some newer plants among them a new Daphne which is easier to grow, and miniature dahlias which can be left in the garden, and old favourites pansies and violas. Later many purchases were made so all were eager to try his advice. Devonshire teas were enjoyed, and a short meeting held where 4 visitors were welcomed with members. Raffle winners were Lexley, Chris and Des and birthday greetings to Pat Bond, Des Potter and Gilbert Cleggett. Visitors and friends are welcome to join us again on Monday May 4th meeting at Uniting Church Williamstown at 12.30pm to visit Netherhill Farm at Gumeracha, to car pool and collect map. At our meeting on Monday April 13, Kym Michelmore accompanied the members and some guests on a Lyndoch History Walk. We started at the Lyndoch Institute Hall and Kym told us some interesting facts about the beginning of Lyndoch and the history of the buildings along the Barossa Valley Highway. For those who are interested, there is an information board about these buildings at the Village Green. Red Cross members prepared and served Devonshire teas at the Art Exhibition in the Institute hall on Saturday and Sunday 18 and 19 April. Do not forget to put any used stamps into the box located in the Post Office. Thank you to those people who are already doing this. We will be collecting old X-rays in June. There will be a box in the library for this purpose. Please do not include the medical reports. Red Cross meetings are held on the first Monday of the month in the Council Chambers (behind the Library) at 2 pm. Anyone interested in Red Cross and their activities are invited to attend the meeting. The annual subscription is only $5. Unfortunately, we were not successful in obtaining a Bingo caller for our 4 May meeting so we will be having a fun activity instead. At the meeting on 1 June, we will be holding the Annual General Meeting. For more information on the above or Red Cross, please phone Malinda on 8524 5353.

LYNDOCH HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Lyndoch historical society recently held a well attended General Meeting at which the Centenary of Gallipoli was commemorated. Those present placed white crosses with red poppies attached containing the names of enlistees in WWI from Lyndoch district in the Memorial Garden next to the Institute. The “Last Post” was played, the “Ode” recited and a minute’s silence held. A bouquet of Rosemary and red poppies was placed on the WWI monument to the fallen men from the district. It is hoped that during the next couple of months the original cross from the monument will be repaired and replaced, courtesy of the Lyndoch Historical Society, who is funding the project as part of the 175
th Anniversary
of the settlement of Lyndoch.
The Society’s History Month events will take place in mid May. On Saturday 16
th May the Society’s museum and rooms will be open from 10.30
a.m. to 4.30 p.m. where family history research assistance will be available. On Sunday 17
th May as part of the 175
th Anniversary of the settlement of Lyndoch
there will be “Open House” at the Coffee Palace, courtesy of the owners from 12.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Visitors are welcome to take an unguided tour of the refurbished 160 year old building. The next General Meeting of the Society will be held on Sunday 26
th July at 2.00 p.m.
The Society has been invited to visit the new Lyndoch CFS station and afterwards
view some old films from the 1930s and 1940s.

175th or Terquasquicentenary year For Lyndoch
It's been a massive 175 years since Lyndoch was settled as a
township. The Lyndoch Historical Society and Community
Committee are hoping to hold various events during the year but we
would also encourage all businesses, Schools, community groups
to perhaps consider any relevant anniversary's that you may have achieved and
consider promoting these in our 175th Birthday Calendar of events (Above).
