“… about 10.00 pm a force of 170 all ranks,
drawn from all 4 companies commenced to get
into position to attack and capture Hill 35 and
Gallipoli. Zero hour was 11.00 pm but the attack
was not launched until 11.30 pm. It succeeded on
the left in getting to the outskirts of Gallipoli, but
on right was held up by machine gun fire from a
strong point. A second strong point was passed
over in the darkness and caused casualties
resulting in the falling back of the right flank. The
left was forced back by an enemy counterattack
but regained all ground up to 150 yards in front of
our old line. 4 posts were established. 2 prisoners
were taken. Casualties Capt G.F.Young, 2/Lt S

Scottish Memorial in Flanders - campaign 2 32 3
onvoorstelbare gebeurtenissen waarvan zij deel uitgemaakt hadden.
will remember them”.

2 3 Scottish Memorial in Flanders - campaign
On Saturday 25th August 1917 the Black Watch and the 10th Scottish Rifles
launched an unsuccessful attack on the ruins of two farms in this area. This
was one of the many forgotten actions that went by almost unnoticed in the
Passchendaele campaign. The gain was neglectable and can hardly be traced
on the strategic maps. The world collapsed for the families that lost a member during this
and similar actions. We can only try to understand how the parents, wives and children
of the victims had to live with the pain of this irreplacable loss. Many of them were even
denied the comfort of a known grave.
Today, ninety years after these events some people question whether we should still
dwell on the memories of this war which took place at the beginning of last century.
With the erection of this Scottish monument on the Frezenberg the Flemish people give a
clear and unmistakable answer to this question. Remembrance is and remains our duty,
not only to the victims but also to their families and to the men and women who survived
this war. Their world would never be the same again. All of them were, in one way or
another scarred by the incredible events they had to go through.
The Scottish Memorial in Flanders is the unambiguous expression of this present and
future commitment of the community of Zonnebeke towards the victims. We will
remember them!

“ No family in Scotland was untouched and no community unaffected by the
loss of so many young soldiers who died in 1917. The carnage of Passchendaele
is a poignant reminder of why the European institutions were established, to
build lasting peace and prosperity in our continent.”
Alex Salmond
First Minister of Scotland, speaking when he attended the recent commemoration
event at Tyne Cot and the Menin Gate on 12 July 2007
The Scottish government strongly agreed that the horror of Passchendaele must
be remembered and appropriately commemorated; in particular for Scots the
sacrifice of the ten Scottish regiments that participated in the offensive. In
raising a magnificent Celtic Cross made from Scottish granite at Frezenberg , we
are commemorating the bravery of Scottish troops not just in Flanders or at the Battle
of Passchendaele, but throughout the entire First World War. It is for these reasons that
we make a financial contribution to this weekend’s event.
In the Municipality of Zonnebeke there are no fewer than 13 memorials dedicated to
units that fought at Passchendaele, but none currently dedicated to Scottish Soldiers
or to a Scottish Regiment. The inauguration of the Scottish Monument honours our
fellow countrymen who fought and died in Flanders and in France. It is with humility,
compassion and quiet pride that we remember with gratitude those Scots who fought
and died for our nation on the fields of Flanders during 1917.”

in 1917.

Bonding through commemoration. In Scotland as well as in numerous other
nations that sent soldiers to the front in the Westhoek during the Great War,
the memory of Flanders Fields is being kept alive. This common past, this
shared sorrow unmistakably creates a bond, an indelible bond. Flanders
will never forget. And neither will Scotland. The commemoration monument on the
Frezenberg testifies to that. The commemoration of what should never be repeated, thus
immediately becomes an active step towards increased and intensified cooperation
between the federated states in Europe.

It was the violation of Belgian neutrality that led Britain to declare war on Germany
on 5th August 1914. On that day the front page headline of a leading London
newspaper Britain’s proclaimed “Three Cheers For Belgium!”. There were no doubts
as to why Britain was going to war. Men in large numbers were needed. Nowhere
was the call for recruits better heeded than in Scotland, then a country with a population
of four million. 560,000 of its sons served in uniform; over 148,000 of them were killed in
action during the four long years of war that followed. The blow of these grievous losses
was felt in the villages, towns and cities throughout Scotland. To this day war memorials
all over the country bear testimony to lost generations and to communities decimated
to the point of extinction.
Many of these memorials are in the form of a soldier standing to his duty in the face of
the enemy. Many others are in the form of the Celtic High Cross, like the one now erected
at Frezenburg. It is deeply poignant that this should be chosen as the place for such a
memorial. Within yards of the site, the 9th (Scottish) Division, the 15th (Scottish) Division
and the 51st (Highland Division) were all embroiled in the ferocious battles that were
fought in the Ieper Salient between 31st July and the 10th November 1917. They fought
heroically in the rain and mud against a determined and brave German defence. Those
defenders would have known that they were facing Scottish infantrymen, particularly
the Highlanders in their kilts, were instantly recognizable as they advanced through
no-man’s land towards their objectives. Legend and contemporary evidence tell us that
the Germans feared no enemy more than the “ladies from hell”, as they called those
Highlanders.
In the peaceful, beautiful Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries to be found here in such
profusion lie thousands of young Scots. They gave their lives for their King and Country
but also in the name of freedom. They came to help regain Belgium for the Belgians.
Their descendants come here in large numbers to see, to reflect and to wonder. All of
them, those living today and the dead of the Great War, are greatly comforted by the care
with which their graves and memorials are tended. They are greatly appreciative of the
heart-warming way in which the people of this part of Belgium preserve and honour their
memories. We are all deeply moved by the decision to erect this splendid monument to
Scottish soldiers and we thank all those involved most warmly. We can expect this new
memorial will be a much visited place in the years to come. Three cheers for Belgium and
Flanders! Scotland Forever!

twijfel mogelijk waarom Groot-Brittannië ten strijde trok. Enorme aantallen
strijdbare mannen waren nodig.
infanteristen, hoofdzakelijk Highlanders in kilt.
liggen duizenden jonge Schotten begraven.
We

‘Mijn ontwerp is

Dirk Uytterschout (°1958) studied plastic arts at Saint-Thomas in Brussels,
from which he graduated in 1976. After having fulfilled his military service,
he was offered a full-time position as an art teacher at the (Belgian) state
secondary school in Soest, Germany in October, 1979. Dirk Uytterschout
has never aspired to an artist’s career. He only calls upon his drawing skills for special
occasions and finishes the commissioned work of art mere hours before the deadline.
As far as the Scottish Memorial is concerned, Dirk Uytterschout again does not wish
to be called an artist. ‘After all,’ he says, ‘my design is “merely” a variation on already
existing Celtic Crosses.” It is only at the unwavering insistence of his good friend Erwin
Ureel that Dirk Uytterschout finally applied himself to this project. And as far as the
deadline is concerned, the genesis of this sketch has once again been one of constant
encouragement, prodding, pleading, egging on, and in the very last resort, threats.

Inleiding
Na de eerste wereldoorlog werden heel wat
monumenten opgericht op de voormalige
westelijke frontlijn. In de meeste gevallen
herinneren ze ons aan de inzet van
welbepaalde militaire eenheden. In mindere
mate wordt ook het engagement van deze
of gene bevolkingsgroep herdacht. In
Vlaanderen zijn monumenten van dit laatste
type eerder een uitzondering. De Ierse Toren
vormt hierop een bekende uitzondering, maar
over het algemeen
zijn deze ‘nationale’
m o n u m e n t e n
terug te vinden
in Frankrijk
(bijvoorbeeld South
African Delville
Wood bij Longueval
of Newfoundland
Park in de buurt van
Beaumont-Hamel).
We kunnen
met zekerheid
zeggen dat de
a a n w e z i g h e i d
van een dergelijk
monument bijdraagt tot de vorming van een
bepaald beeld van de groep die herdacht
wordt. Vreemd genoeg vinden we nergens
strijdkrachten. Dit is des te opvallender
aangezien verschillende Schotse regimenten
bijna steevast deelnamen aan zware
gevechten, vaak op cruciale momenten.
In Frankrijk zijn er nochtans heel wat
invdividuele monumenten voor bataljons,
regimenten of divisies, terwijl in Zonnebeke
– Passendale elke vorm van herinnering
ontbreekt. Nochtans werden net hier drie
grote eenheden, met name de 9e (Schotse),
de 15e (Schotse) en de 51e (Highland)
Divisie quasi tegelijkertijd ingezet in vaak
erg gruwelijke gevechten.
zetten. Het vroegere slagveld bij Zonnebeke
is vanuit historisch oogpunt zonder enige
twijfel de meest aangewezen plaats om een
project opgedragen aan de Schotse inzet op
te starten.
Historische achtergrond
Zonnebeke. In een periode van 50 dagen werd
een vooruitgang geboekt van 3,5 kilometer,
dit ten koste van enorme verliezen. Meer
noordwaarts werd de 51e (Highland) Divisie
ingezet bij Poelkapelle. Tevens namen
heel wat Schotse bataljons deel aan de
gevechten bij andere niet-homogene divisies.
Een bekend voorbeeld van zo’n gemengde
eenheid was de 7e Divisie, die zowel in 1914
als in 1917 op de Broodseinde – Geluveld lijn
vocht. De recente begrafenis van soldaat
Thompson (2e Gordon Highlanders bataljon)
zekerheid zeggen
dat de aanwezigheid
van een dergelijk
monument
bijdraagt tot het
vormen van een
bepaald beeld

Ook heel wat Canadese eenheden kunnen
buigen op een stevige Schotse traditie. Zo
zijn er de Canadian Seaforth Highlanders bij
Passendale, de Nova Scotia Highlanders op
Passendale Ridge, ... In mindere mate gaat dit
ook op voor Australische en Zuidafrikaanse
regimenten. En uiteraard mogen we ook de
vele Schotten die dienden in Engelse, Ierse,
Welshe, Nieuwzeelandse, New Foundland en
Schotten in migratielanden (waaronder
Canada) tot de beoogde groep behoren.
Onze studiegroep koos voor de herdenking
van de algemene Schotse inzet, eerder dan
het zoveelste monument te willen oprichten
voor deze of gene Schotse eenheid. Nergens
in Schots graniet (Corrennie Pink), geplaatst
net iets lager. Het werd vervaardigd bij het
Schotse bedrijf Fyfe Glenrock (Oldmeldrum,
bij Aberdeen) . De transportfirma’s ARR Craib
en Delta Transport verzorgden gratis het
vervoer. De plaatselijke aannemer Patrick
Mylleville zorgde voor de plaatsing van het
monument en bronsgieter en -artiest Peter
Berghman van het bedrijf ‘eplaat’ (Roeselare,
Vlaanderen, België) ontwierp en goot de
bronzen plaat.
vele plaatsen in Groot-Brittannië, Ierland
en Wales om de oorlogsslachtoffers te
herdenken.
vroegere slagveld waar hun
actie plaats greep. Slechts
enkele weken later nam de
9e Schotse Divisie, met de
1e Zuidafrikaanse Brigade
in zijn rangen, de sector
over. Met uitzondering
van enkele korte
onderbrekingen bleven
de Schotten ongeveer een
zevental weken in dezelfde buurt gedurende
augustus en september 1917. Het staat
in een historisch zeer belangrijke sector
waar geen enkel herdenkingsmonument
“Een bekend
voorbeeld van zo’n
gemengde eenheid
was de 7e Divisie,
die zowel in 1914
als in 1917 op de
Broodseinde –
Geluveld linie vocht ”

terug te vinden is. De plaats is vervuld met
symboliek: als de weersomstandigheden het
toelaten is Passendale, het eindpunt van
de drie maanden durende ‘Passchendaele
– campagne’, ook gekend als de Derde Slag
om Ieper. Bovendien is het de vertreklijn
van heel wat belangrijke aanvallen. De weg
leidt verder naar Saint-Charles de Potyze, de
enige echte klassieke Franse begraafplaats
in de streek. Zo kan de site een belangrijk
onderdeel worden van een verantwoorde
slagveldroute.
hoofdbaan. De inhuldiging van het Schots
Kruis gebeurt tijdens een ‘Schots weekend’,
waar behalve delegaties van zowel de
Schotse Executive als de Vlaamse Regering
ook de Britse Ambassadeur en Schotse
militaire en burgerdelegaties aanwezig zijn.
Zuidafrikaanse links
Aangezien de 1e Zuidafrikaanse Brigade
een onderdeel was van de 9e (Schotse)
Divisie gedurende het grootste deel van de
oorlog en omdat ze sterk betrokken waren
bij de gevechten op 20 september 1917 bij
‘Bremen Redoubt’, vlakbij Zonnebeke, wordt
het monument ook opgedragen aan deze
Brigade. De Frezenberg is de enige plaats in
Vlaanderen waar de Zuidafrikaanse inzet
herdacht wordt.
Passchendaele 1917 – 2007
De inhuldiging van het monument
is het hoogtepunt van het Schots
herdenkingsweekend op 25 en 26 augustus
2007. Alle andere activiteiten zijn hieraan
gelinkt (taptoe, Highland games, bezoeken
brochure hieromtrent). Om de historische
link tussen Vlaanderen en Schotland te
benandrukken kreeg het Schots weekend
de naam ‘Will ye come to Flanders’ mee, dit
naar het alombekende Schotse liedje over
Highlanders die naar Vlaanderen kwamen
om te vechten (oorspronkelijke titel ‘Will ye
go to Flanders’).
Financiering
De hoofdkost van het monument werd
geschat op 33.000 euro (ongeveer 21.000
pond). Het monument werd besteld bij de
Schotse firma Fyfe Glenrock (Oldmeldrum,
monument (ongeveer 7000 pond, betaald
door het Gemeentebestuur van Zonnebeke)
en een tweede bronzen plaat die betaald
werd door Mrs. Gina Fyffe niet inbegrepen.
Het Herdenkingsweekend werd gefinancierd
door het Gemeentebestuur van Zonnebeke
met een sterke ondersteuning van de
Vlaamse Regering en de Schotse Executive.
Op Wapenstilstandsdag Day 2005 werd
het startsein gegeven voor een grootse
sponseringcampagne.

In juni 2006 publiceerde The Times een artikel
van twee pagina’s over het project. Sinds dan
werd een hele reeks van artikels hieromtrent
gepubliceerd door zowel de Schotse als de

Bryon en de coördinators van het project,
de heer John Sutherland (UK-coördinator) en
de heer Erwin Ureel (Algemeen coördinator)
uitgenodigd om lezingen te geven aan de
Universiteit van Glasgow (27 februari) en in
het Schotse Parlement (28 februari).
Conclusie
Het feit dat het 90 jaar geduurd heeft
voor de Schotten hun nationaal
herdenkingsmonument kregen op
het vroeger slagveld is meer dan
opvallend. Het is vanzelfsprekend
dat het monument van een continu
belang zal zijn om de herinnering
aan de Schotse inzet in de Groten
Oorlog levendig te houden. Het
Keltisch Kruis zal door zijn locatie,
historisch belang en artistieke
waarde een in het oog springend
herkenningspunt in het landschap
zijn voor de 400.000 bezoekers die de
frontstreek elk jaar bezoeken. Door
dit monument op te dragen aan
alle Schotten die betrokken waren

Scottish Memorial in Flanders - campaign 20 2120 21
Introduction
After the first world war, quite a
few monuments were erected on
the former Western front line. In
most cases they remind us of the
involvement of particular military units. To
a lesser extent the commitment of one or
another group of people is commemorated.
In Flanders, monuments of the latter type
are rather rare: the impressive Irish Tower
at Messines is a conspicuous exception,
but more often
these ‘national’
monuments are
to be found in
France (e.g. the
South African
Delville Wood
near Longueval,
or Newfoundland
Park in the vicinity
of Beaumont-
Hamel). We can
only state that
the presence of
such a monument
contributes a lot to
the establishment of a certain image of the
group commemorated. Strangely enough,
at the Western Front, nowhere a monument
can be found commemorating the overall
Scottish involvement. This is so much more
striking as the very Scottish regiments took
part in some very heavy fighting, often at
crucial moments. Remarkably, in France
there are quite some individual monuments
of battalions, regiments or divisions, while in
the very place where three large units, the 9th
(Scottish),15th (Scottish) and 51st (Highland)
Divisions were almost simultaneously
engaged in fierce battles near Zonnebeke-
Passendale, any form of remembrance
is lacking. At the same moment the 52nd
(Lowland) Division was operating on more
exotic fronts. Apparently the conventional
wisdom ‘out of sight, out of mind’ holds here.
In a period of steadily growing interest for the
first World War, the time seemed to be ripe to
set things right. The former battlefield near
Zonnebeke is beyond any doubt historically
the most suitable place to start a project on
the Scottish involvement.
Historical Justification
Of the three Scottish Divisions, the 9th and
15th fought on the territory of the village
of Zonnebeke. Within a period of 50 days, a
two mile advance was obtained at a terrible
cost. Further north, the 51st (Highland) was
deployed near Poelkapelle. Moreover, quite a
few Scottish battalions were involved in the
battles of other not homogenous divisions.
A well known example of such a mixed unit
was the 7th Division, which both in 1914 and
1917 operated on the Broodseinde- Geluveld
line. The recent burial of private Thompson
(2nd battalion Gordon Highlanders) on
Polygon Wood Cemetery is a typical example
of the Scottish commitment. Also in Canadian
context, several units can boast a Scottish
tradition (Canadian Seaforth Highlanders
near Passendale, Nova Scotia Highlanders
on ‘Passchendaele Ridge’…). To a lesser
extent, the same applies to Australian and

South- African regiments . And not to forget
the many Scots who served in English, Irish,
Welsh, New Zealand, New Foundland and
other battalions.
Presentation of the Project
The project’s aim was to have a Scottish
monument erected on a historically
justified spot on the territory of the village
of Zonnebeke, more particularly in the
vicinity of Frezenberg. The monument will
be unique in this respect that it was chosen
to pay tribute to all Scots who were involved
in the Great War. Obviously it will have a
universal character, because also the Scots in
emigration countries (among others Canada)
belong to this target group. Our study group
deliberately opted for the idea of an overall
Scottish involvement rather than wanting to
erect the umpteenth monument for one or
another Scottish unit. Along the whole of the
former Western and other fronts, no similar
“national” Scottish memorial can be found.
The monument will be a ‘High Cross’ or
‘Celtic Cross’ of Scottish granite (Corrennie
Pink) set on a plinth of original bunker
stones. The height of the cross itself will be
roughly three metres, the plinth of bunker
stones approximately the same size. The
Scottish firm Fyfe Glenrock (Oldmeldrum,
near Aberdeen) has produced the cross, The
transport companies ARR Craib and Delta
Transport transported it free of charge
, the local constructor Patrick Mylleville
constructed the Memorial and the bronze
caster and artist Peter Berghman of the
company “eplaat” designed and casted
the bronze plaques (Roeselare, Flanders,
Belgium). ‘High Crosses’ descend from an age
old Celtic tradition, and are not only erected
in Scotland, but also in many places in
England, Ireland and Wales to commemorate
the war casualties.
The draft, as shown on the front page, was
made by Dirk Uytterschout (Halle, near
Brussels) and was deliberately inspired by the
village monuments one can find anywhere in
Scotland. In this way the cross will constitute
a symbolic link with the home land both in
shape and material.
How the monument fits in the landscape
As far as location is concerned, Frezenberg
is the most justifiable choice: -on the edge
of the area where the
Scottish 15th Division
launched a bloody attack
on 17 August 1917, and
with a good view over
the former battlefield
where their action
took place. Only weeks
later the 9th (Scottish)
Division, with the 1st
South African Brigade in
its ranks, took over the
sector. Apart from some
brief spells, the Scottish
have been in more or
less the same area for
about 5 weeks in August
and September 1917.
- in a historically very
important sector where
not a single memorial
can be found though. -a place pregnant
with symbolism: weather circumstances
permitting, Passendale, the finishing point of
the three months’ Passchendaele- campaign,
also known as ‘Third Ypres’, is well visible.
Furthermore, it is almost exactly on the
“...on the edge of

the Scottish 15th
Division launched
a bloody attack on

jumping off line of some important attacks.
-on the road to Saint-Charles de Potyze, the
only genuine classical French burial ground in
the region. In this way it may be an important
part of the route taken by visiting groups.
-practical and in a safe place for visitors.
There is a broad shoulder, separated from the
main road by a ditch. The memorial is carved
on the two sides and bronze plaques are
attached on each side which provides a safe
way of organizing small ceremonies off the
main road. The inauguration of the Scottish
Cross will be linked to a ‘Scottish Weekend’
to which –apart from delegations from
both the Scottish Executive and the Flemish
Government- also the British ambassador
and Scottish military and civil delegations
will be invited.
South- African link
As the the 1st South- African Brigade was part
of the 9th (Scottish) Division for most of the
war and because they were heavily involved
in the fighting near “Bremen Redoubt” in
front of Zonnebeke on the 20th of September
1917, the memorial will also be dedicated
to this Brigade. The Frezenberg is the only
place in Flanders where the South African
involvement is commemorated.
Passchendaele 1917- 2007
The inauguration of the memorial is be the
climax of the Scottish Memorial Weekend on
25 and 26 August 2007. All other activities will
be linked to it (tattoo, Highland games, visits
to historical battlefields……) The memorial
weekend fits in a number of ambitious
activities that will be organized by the
municipality of Zonnebeke as a result of the
commemoration of the Battle of Passendale
after 90 years (see overall brochure 2007).
To emphasize the historical link between
Flanders and Scotland, the Scottish weekend
is presented under the title ‘Will ye come to
Flanders’ according to a well known and age
old Scottish song about Highlanders who
came to Flanders to fight (original title “Will
ye come to Flanders”).
Financing
The prime cost of the memorial was
estimated at 33.000 euros (about 21.000
pounds). The monument was ordered at
Fyfe Glenrock (Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire)
on the 25th of August 2006. Not included in
this sum was the cost for the base of the
monument (approximately £7000), paid
by the City Council of Zonnebeke and an
additional bronze plaque paid for by Mrs.
Gina Fyffe. The cost of the Commemoration
weekend is paid by the City Council with
strong support of Flemish Government and
Scottish Executive. A sponsoring campaign
was started on Armistice Day 2005. Letters
to the Scottish First Minister and the leaders
of the four most important political parties
had been sent. A campaign to appeal to the
public has been launched and raised much
interest. Contacts with former Scottish
Regimental Associations, the new Royal
Regiment of Scotland, Air Bases in Scotland,
the Province of West- Flanders ... proved to
be very fruitful. The bunker stones for the
plinth were been acquired by the Memorial
Museum Passchendaele 1917 and the
Genootschap Passchendaele Society 1917.
Major donations to support the Memorial
and/ or organisation of the commemoration
weekend have been received from (amongst
others) Cities of Aberdeen and Glasgow,
several RBLS and WFA branches, including a

very important support of RBLS Turiff Branch, Scottish
Freemasons, Morayshire, Renfrewshire and Highland
Councils, Flemish Caledonian Society, Mr. Tom Jenkins,
... With a structural grant, The Flemish Government
and Scottish Executive have recognised the efforts of
the Committee and are supporting the campaign. A full
list of sponsors is included in this brochure.
Promotion
In June 2006, “The Times” published a two page article
about the project. Since then, Scottish and Flemish
press published a series of articles about this Scottish
memorial.
In February 2007, the Alderman of Zonnebeke, Mr.
Franky Bryon and the coordinators of the Campaign,
Mr. John Sutherland (UK- coordinator) and Mr. Erwin
Ureel (general coordinator) have been invited to
give lectures in Glasgow University and in Scottish
Parliament.
Conclusion
The fact that it took 90 year before the Scottish will
have their national Memorial in the former battlefield
is more than significant.
It is obvious that the monument will be of permanent
importance in keeping the memory of the Scottish
engagement in the ‘Great War’ alive. The Celtic Cross
will by its location, historical importance and its
artistic value be a striking landmark for the 400,000
visitors coming to the front area each year.
By dedicating the monument to all Scots involved
in the Great War, it has a singular and universal
character. Moreover, it offers an excellent opportunity
to emphasize the bond between two rising federal
states within Europe visually and permanently.

Scottish Memorial in Flanders - campaign 24 2524 25
When the Scottish Tartans Authority first heard of this worthy campaign to
commemorate those very many Scots who lost their lives in the Battle of
Passchendaele, its Governors felt it only appropriate that they should help
in some way. The introduction of a special Passchendaele Tartan offered an
ideal opportunity and the Authority was only too pleased to present that to the community
of Zonnebeke-Passchendaele. Its acceptance can only strengthen the existing bonds between
Flanders and Scotland and act as a small token of appreciation to the people of Zonnebeke-
Passchendale whose fields are home to so many Scottish souls.
The Authority congratulates all those whose tireless efforts mean that the sacrifices of so many
in ‘the Great War’ will not go unmarked on this, the 90th Anniversary of that tragic battle.
The Scottish Tartans Authority is a charitable body established to inform and promote a greater
knowledge of Scotland’s fascinating tartan heritage. Supported by the weaving and Highland
dress industry and a worldwide membership, the Authority maintains the International Tartan
Index - the most comprehensive tartan database in existence - and is home to the world’s
largest collection of woven samples in its valuable archives in Perthshire.
It operates a free information service for businesses and private individuals from around the
globe and answers many thousands of enquiries annually. Its tartan design services are very
much in demand as are its talks for schools and other organisations.
Brian Wilton
Director of Operations
Origins of the Passchendaele- tartan A tartan is a pattern consisting of horizontal
and vertical bands in multiple colours. It is
particularly associated with Celtic countries,
especially Scotland. The way of weaving
gives the appearance of new colours blended
from the original ones. The resulting blocks
of colour repeat vertically and horizontally
in a distinctive pattern of squares and lines
known as a sett. After the Jacobite uprisings
(18th century) tartans where banned for a
few years, with exemptions for the military
and the gentry but this was soon repealed. In
the modern era, specific tartans have become
associated with Scottish clans or Scottish
(and other) families, or simply institutions
who are associated in some way with a
Scottish or Celtic heritage. At the occasion of
the Scottish Memorial in Flanders- campaign,
a special Passchendaele- tartan was
designed to commemorate the involvement
of so many Scots and other nations in this
part of Flanders during the Great War. The
two main colours are dark red for the blood
spilled and the brown for the mud. Additional
colours are black for the mourning, bright
red to symbolize the poppies made famous
by the Scottish- Canadian poet John McCrae,
green for the restored landscape and hope.
Black, yellow and red are as well the colours
of the community of Zonnebeke (of which
Passchendaele is now part of), the devoluted
region of Flanders and the kingdom of
Belgium. The tartan is designed by Erwin
Ureel and Mia Vanhaverbeke with support
of Brian Wilson of the Scottish Tartan
Authority.

nele. De horizontale en verticale afwisseling
van kleurblokken die het resultaat zijn van
de specifieke manier van weven wordt “sett”
genoemd. Na de opstanden van de Jacobi-
eten (18e eeuw) werden tartans verboden,
uitgezonderd voor militairen en adel. Dit
verbod werd echter snel opgeheven. Tegen-
woordig worden tartans vaak geassocieerd
met Schotse clans, Schotse (en andere) fami-
lies of gewoonweg instellingen of organisat-

Hieruit ontstonden beroemde Schotse
familienamen, zoals Brodie, Cameron, Stewart, Fleming. Het leidde tot een opleving in de
handelsbetrekkingen: Vlamingen brachten veel kennis over, o.a. in de textielnijverheid,
metseltechnieken, vlasteelt, buskruit, klokken, etc.
Schots monument in Zonnebeke.

There has been a bond between Flanders and Scotland for 10 centuries, nowadays
there is also a bilateral one on economical, artistic and political level. It all
started in the Middle Ages, when in the wake of William the Conqueror many
Flemings settled in Scotland. They delivered famous Scottish names: Brodie,
Cameron, Stewart, Fleming. It also lead to new commercial relations: the Flemings
passed on their knowledge of textile industry, masonry, flax industry, gunpowder, bells,
etc. There are numerous traces of Flemish presence in Scotland during the middle ages:
castles on artificial hills, names of cities and villages. Flemish language influences were
also substantial. The Scottish textile and mining industries were also partly initiated
and developed by Flemish immigrants. WWI brought many Scots to Flanders, some
permanently. And it is especially in remembrance of these Scots, and the centuries-old
bond between Flanders and Scotland, that the Flemish Caledonian Society -a Ghent based
Scottish society, which for the past 30 years has pursued to develop and consolidate the
cultural bonds with Scotland- has made an effort to contribute to the realization of a
permanent Scottish monument in Zonnebeke.

Belmont Academy - a Scottish Memorial in Flanders
During the war youngsters from
all over Scotland joined the
army to fight in a conflict on a
scale never seen before. Now,
90 years later, a delegation of Scottish
pupils has travelled to the former frontline
to pay its respects to a lost generation of
Scottish boys and, on some occasions, girls.
The young Scots who are part of the unveiling
ceremony are pupils in Belmont Academy,
from the historic town of Ayr in the south
west of Scotland. The area has always had
strong links with the Royal Scots Fusiliers
(today the Royal Highland Fusiliers) which
was often involved in the fighting in Flanders,
not least during the infamous Passchendaele
Campaign in the summer and autumn of
1917. On the 26th of September, battalions
of the Royal Scots, Royal Scots Fusiliers and
Gordon Highlanders were involved in the
capture of Zonnebeke village, roughly one
mile from this place. It resulted in one of the
most grim photographs of the Great War.
Apart from studying the war in school, every
year a party of forty three Belmont Academy
pupils visits Flanders to experience more
directly what they learn about. It is very
important to the school that the memory of
the lives sacrificed is never forgotten by our
pupils and the young people of Scotland.
All the pupils attending today’s ceremony
had a family member killed during the
war. To prepare for their participation in the
unveiling ceremony of the Scottish Memorial
in Flanders they researched a soldier who was
killed at Passchendaele using the resources
of Ayr’s Carnegie Library. The soldier they
focused on will be honoured today. He is
a symbol for all the Scots and for the 1st
South African Brigade, part of 9th (Scottish)
Division who were involved in the Great War.
It has been a privilege for our school to be
associated with the campaign to create a
National Memorial for all those of Scottish
origin who participated in the war.
Through the common act of remembering
we hope that the ‘auld acquaintance’
which exists between Scottish youth
and Belmont Academy in particular
with Flanders will continue to flourish.

Belmont Academy - een Schots Monument in Vlaanderen
Jonge mannen van over heel Schotland
namen dienst in het leger tijdens de
Groten Oorlog. Ze zouden vechten in
een conflict dat nooit eerder geziene
proporties aannam.
Schotland. Deze streek heeft altijd al sterke
banden gehad met de Royal Scots Fusiliers
(nu de Royal Highland Fusiliers), die zeer
vaak betrokken waren bij de gevechten in
Vlaanderen.
theoretisch in Belmont Academy. Jaarlijks
vandaag herdacht. Hij staat symbool
voor zowel àlle Schotten als voor de 1e
Zuidafrikaanse Brigade, die deel uitmaakte
van de 9e (Schotse) Divisie.
Het is een voorrecht voor onze school
om geassocieerd te worden met deze
campagne voor een Schots Monument
in Vlaanderen. Door het gezamenlijke
herdenken hopen we dat de oude
vriendschapsbanden tussen enerzijds de
Schotse jeugd en Belmont Academy in het
bijzonder en Vlaanderen anderzijds verder
zullen bloeien.
